Exactly. Guarantee the difference between the 430M and 520M is not noticeable. Encoding...maybe and even then it's on an order of a few % points. Unless I see testing that bears the numbers out, the simple notebookcheck cpu chart is laughable.

The future-proofing argument in terms of paying a premium for technology I hate to say is simply one I don't buy. Almost certainly, you'd be better off buying the best bang for the buck now, and replacing for the best bang of the buck in three years as opposed to buying the top end parts and hanging on to it for three years by which point it's already a primitive piece of crap. Video cards are the perfect analogy to this.

Nice price considering the i7 and dual SSDs. It seems like, despite the "elite" status of the Envy, these things are the best deal around right now if you want power in a nearly ultra-portable size.

I'm sort of wishing I had added the slim fit battery to mine with the original purchase. Something tells me that ~3 hours tops of battery life isn't going to cut it, and it's ~$170 or so to purchase it after the fact. Oh well.

They'll let it go for $130 if you ordered yours recently and want to add the Slice.

Good to hear. Now any comments on the quality of the unit? I keep hearing that it doesn't lock in place very well and can become disconnected easily.

Does the system have to be shut down to attach the battery?

I'm actually in the process of returning mine and re-ordering so I didn't have a chance to test the Slice a whole lot. I did attach it and carry it around and it didn't come off, but I wasn't very rambunctious with it. I have read the same reports about it coming disconnected easily. It seemed secure when I played with it.

I don't think the system has to be shut down to attach it.

That's what I was thinking too. A similarly specced M15x has a better gfx card (with some OCing, the 5830 is roughly equal I think, but it supports dx11 while the gtx260 does not), 2 less RAM slots, no USB 3.0, a 9-cell battery at best, 4 lbs heavier, .8 inches thicker, and 2.5 inches deeper, for $2700 after shipping and tax.

It's actually not that different in price, but the Envy has a $450 coupon and free shipping. And some of the dimension advantages on the ENVY vanish when you put on the slim battery.

Just Placed My Order (agonized over buying this ever since the $450 coupon became available)

Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    i5-430M
    4GB DDR3
    320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
    Anti-glare Widescreen Display (1920x1080)
Extra 6 Cell Lithium Ion Polymer Battery
$1,062.49 after tax and coupon (*going for bang-for-buck*)

Gotta say, I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger on an M11x. Here's hoping that two 6 cells will give me 5-6 hours of battery life : )

Edit: Should mention that I have no intention of upgrading anything and every intention to sell this in ~1 year

Unless something amazing comes out in the next year or two, I'll be keeping this one for quite some time. I have my desktop for when I need a really powerful system (i7 860, 4GB DDR3, X25-M G2, GTX 285, etc.), and it's easy to upgrade. The laptop will simply be for portability and moderate gaming while away from home.

With that said, the metal chassis was the biggest selling point for me. I'm so sick of the plasticy garbage that so many manufacturers put out these days. If all goes well, I have full intentions of keeping this thing for at least 2-3 years, possibly more.

Just ordered mine, an i5-540M with dual SSDs. I had some trouble getting the coupon to apply because of a conflict with my company EPP. I had to create a new HP account; then the discount worked fine.

One interesting thing: The salesperson guaranteed me that the SSDs would be Intel G2s. That's a pretty sweet deal getting two 160 GB Intel X-25Ms for $500.

When you guys are talking about making a new account to get the discount, are you talking about getting the $450.00 off in addition to your company epp?

Getting something as thin and light as the Envy requires tradeoffs. One of those is the extra physical infrastructure (slots, cards, etc.) that's needed for things like MXM.

That coupon seems to be generating a lot of profit for HP. I reckon this is most I have seem as far as ENVY coupon. I wonder what Hp has up its sleeve. New refresh? New upgraded GPU??

Hey, guys. Is this coupon limited to payment of US credit card only?

I'm from Asia, and I've tried with Paypal and credit card, both not working. Is there anyway I can make a purchase of Envy 15?

I have friends in Canada, so will HP shopping receive Canadian credit cards?

    Huge thanks!

HP is best fair computer provider in U.S, compare to dell, which is garbage company, they ship and build the laptop earlier by who paying more , it doesn't matter who order earlier

I ordered a sxps 16 on 10 2009 , it delivered on 12 /29 /09 almost the end of year. lol . Because mine was a little bit cheaper than others, dell alway told me mine's parts are back order

oh ,god, you don't believe me? I have screen shot and DELL case nubmer, and full dell reps email records

I just called HP to cancel my 2nd order which I did about 2 days ago (I was planning to keep one of them , but I gave up to wait 2 weeks)

That woman is not an Indian and no wait time!!! It's incredible

The most thing impress me is no hassle. !!!

I cancelled a dell order before, took me like 1 hour    , transfer me 3 times, and have to wait online about 10 min to process the cancellation, plus that rep asked me too many questions, give me a headache,

The reason I was still choosing dell because it offers cheap netbook mini 10.

I used the 6-month bill me later option. I know it's 20% interest if you don't pay in full by the 6 month period, but I'm planning on paying it off in about a month when I move around money, get my paycheck, and sell my laptop. :D

yun: i had a good experience as well when i called to cancel one of my orders. practically no wait, no hassle, and they even offered a small discount to keep the order. i called about 2 days after and they had both been "sent to production" already. HP said they may both ship but i got an email yesterday confirming the one order was canceled. good customer service so far.

Yeah same here, very good experience so far with HP customer service. A live person picked up the phone on the first ring! I've been dealing with Dell for years, have not had such good luck calling Dell on the phone!

I ordered two Envys. First one was just base + 1080p matte screen + 9cell slice. Then I decided I should have opted for the SSD, call HP (yes live person immediately) to see if I could add the option. Too late. So I placed a second order. Then, same thing, being wishy washy I wanted the dual SSD option instead. Called again. Too late to change, rep said she'll attempt to cancel the order but no guarantee. I told her just leave the order as is, I'll live with a single SSD.

Then, yesterday I get the email, order canceled   Can't blame HP for having an efficient system I guess. Tried to spec out another laptop with dual SSD this time, coupon no longer valid. Crap... Call HP again (yes again live person immediately). Explained the whole situation, but the order was confirmed to be canceled, cannot be reinstated. Luckily for me, the rep was able to place another for me right then and there, and even though the coupon expired she was able to get me the $450 off. Plus she gave me 2nd day shipping free.

Great experience with HP so far. Can't wait till I get my hands on it!

the dv8t seems cheap by comparison to envy but of course an 18" model is heavy and its design is unappealing. just a big blobby plastic thing. an 17" envy at ~6 pound would be sweet tho.

You don't need to worry, hp is great company. their factory build system who order it earlier

I ordered it on 03/30/2010, 11:09:13 Pdt :D :D :D I believe I'm almost earliest people placed order before it showed up in this forum and slickdeals.net front page

I know there were like more than 500 orders placed after it was in front page of slickdeals....on 3/30

Those people are trying to re-sell these laptops in ebay or oversea.
