I agree its not the greatest but its an easy direct comparison for I5 vs I7
-
Do you happen to see a "switchable graphics" option somewhere around your screen/desktop/taskbar?
-
does it say "beats" every time you hit the b key?
-
switchable graphics?
Some battery life tests or impressions for tomorrow? -
Thats the trade off, at least for now. You either get an I7 with USB 3.0 and just the 5830 or an I5 with switchable graphics but only USB 2.0. No such thing as having your cake and eating it too.....yet
-
installing 3dmark, runnning 06 now
-
johnnobts
Can you also post a screenshot of your entire Device Manager? -
RAM score is low isn't it? I got 7.4 on mine. did you switch to High Performance power setting before running the test?
-
So, does it have switchable graphics? Screen pls
. Man I'm like a kid in a striptease bar
-
I get 5.9 ram score on my dekstop with dual channel DDR2 667.
Run SiSandra though to test the ram. -
Give the chap time....! I too can't wait to see some benchmarks and other info, but we've waited this long, another few hours is not going to cause serious harm
Maybe somebody should put together a list of things to run if Johnnobts has enough time to run them? -
5.9 on the ram is low, i hope mine comes with the PC 10600 1333
-
if its switchable, nothing in the manual or on the catalyst settings
-
lol, no, totally out of the box even w/ bloatware running... 3dmark06 still running, don't want to interrupt, seems like low framerate, may need to adjust power settings and run again. only 4GB RAM by the way.
-
have to go to church.... would skip and run more tests, but pastors cant skip...
-
Can you try running on battery and see if you get any notification about
"switching GPU's" ? -
If Johnnobts doesn't want to spend time with his new laptop then he should just give it to me.
With great power comes great responsibility. Johnnobts needs to run benchmarks and look at specs and post back. Take pictures too.
Do you happen to have a dB Meter or an IR thermometer on you? What about an ammeter to measure power draw? We need to know NOW!
-
otehr random thoughts: glossy finish but not as bad a fingerprint mangnet as I feared. Had to really push down hard and smudge to get a viewable print. the palmrest is matte black, think the whole thing should be this color actually. again, someone know of a better trackpad driver?
-
This is the entire reason why they invented assistant pastors.
Also, didn't Jesus say "Give unto others what HP has given unto you?"
Also, that "thou shalt not covet thy neighbors laptop" thing... ya, it's not working out for me. -
Not a driver, but a fun tool, download Scrybe. http://www.uscrybe.com/download.html
-
wow... nice finally someone get an i5..
and he has to go to church... damn..
well... hope when u come back u post more screens
about it..
btw I think 5.9 for ram its too low... I saw a screen of a dv6quad with 4gigs of ram with a score of 7.4
wierd.... -
great power, great responsibility... lol, ok stan lee. 3dmark score regular settings out of the box: 8621 (respectable!)
will re-run the test. again, no sign of switchable gfx that i can find. -
8621 is pretty good. I think that is just slightly lower than my desktop with the 4830.
-
Notebookcheck scored with the 4830HD - 8380 3DMark06
I was expecting at least over 9000
-
A respectable score, and around what I would have expected, though with tweaking settings etc I'd expect a little higher.
I hope that when you next get some time to play with the notebook you find the switchable graphics, otherwise it's the nail in the coffin for this machine for me. -
sorry, will get right back with you guys around 7:30PM CT. No switchable graphics when unplugged, doesn't detect a second display adapter or anything in device manager. also, is hp going to update their site with 5830 drivers?
-
really happy about temperature. was thinking it would be macbook hot, but its not at all. Fan speed did pick up when running test, but still negligable.
-
Hmm interesting... Would you mind going in the BIOS and looking around if you can select the integrated Intel GPU? Will wait for your answer
Edit: Also, can you check what chipset the mobo is running on? Download CPU-Z and click on the Motherboard tab. -
For all of those who wish to upgrade thier ram, may I suggest
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ..._re=hyperx_ddr3_laptop-_-20-104-158-_-Product
for i7 Processors
and
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ..._re=hyperx_ddr3_laptop-_-20-104-139-_-Product
for i5 processors -
What's the point upgrade from 4gb to 4gb.
-
The Core i5 configs apparently only have 2 DIMM slots so the only upgrade is to get 4GB DIMMS since the standard config comes with both slots populated.
-
Ditto that for both the guys that have the Beats i7 and i5 configs.
-
Not a bad score. It was what I expected for out of the box.
If you get a chance I'd love for you to check the bios for a way to force the system to use the Intel IGP rather than the 5830.
I want to be able to at least use the Intel IGP for Linux because I don't want to deal with AMD's terrible drivers. -
Also some screenshots plz
-
++
Not to mention battery life. I don't game in linux, and intel graphics are fast enough to run compiz. -
Hmm, I just realized why my i5 order was delayed...seems like there may be a direct correlation between church attendance and on time shipments...
-
was supposed to ship yesterday have yet to receive a denial of service email.
-
At least it's not a DoS attack.
-
lol, DoS emails. You would need a LOT of emails.
-
got a chuckle out of this one... + 1 internets to you.
-
true but it will hurt just as bad...lol

Re: Envy 15 i5 Beats 5830 3DMark06 score of 8621
Remember that 3DMark06 is generally CPU constrained on modern class 1 video cards because it runs at a lowly 1280x1024. So 3DMark06 scores amongst different graphics cards are really only comparable when run on the same CPU. :-< Also cards that get similar scores at 1280x1024 may exhibit *huge* differences in performance at higher resolutions, like 1920x1080 and with anti-aliasing enabled.
So don't get overly concerned about the ~5% increase in 3DMark06 scores between the 4830 and 5830 on different CPU's.
But just looking at the small amount of detailed technical information available about the differences between the mobility 4830 vs. 5830, the performance difference should be minimal. It's not going to be anywhere close to the difference between the desktop versions of the 48xx and 58xx series. -
8621 points?? thats good I guess
Do you guys think that with a new driver when it comes out that score will rise a little bit more?
cause honestly I was hoping for a little more... not too much... but someeeeething moreeeee
-
Hopefully HP's system configuration tool is correct and your information isn't, because when an i5 processor is selected, the HP configuration tool still displays the following for RAM options:
One can only hope. -
Run vantage as 06 is dead and not a viable way to bench current hardware.
-
it doesnt let you select them.
-
I wonder if the 5830 that comes with the i5 is the same as the 5830 that comes with the i7 since they make you select different graphics option for the different CPU options (although it doesn't indicate a difference.) I wonder if one has gddr3 memory while the other has ddr3.
-
First round drivers are always mediocre performing. One ATI comes out with a set of mobility drivers we should see some enhanced performance and tweaks.
ATIs mobility line of 58xx chipsets are not even close to the desktop versions so probably has many different performance characteristics. The one in the Envy is supposed to be the High Performance class with the lowest power utilization. The 5850 and 5870 Mobility chipsets are supposed to be the top-end gaming and desktop replacement gfx for notebooks or shall we say desknotes.
The 3D marks score is impressive but I suspect is mainly due to the Core i5 processor but a good balance for a start. This could be in the 9500s if its mated with a core i7-920xm and optimized drivers. -
I'm wondering the same thing....
If the i5 gets the DDR3 and the i7 the GDDR3.........
sigh... Better not to think that... somebody here have the i5.. I hope he post some screens later to show us wath he get
-
OK just caught up and I forgot already, Is this an i5-520 or i5-540?
Also I believe he said that the testing so far has been on standard settings no adjustments in power plan settings, may make a difference when re-run
