Depends. The GPU is seriously inferior to what the Envy has in it. If you don't play games, there no big reason not to do it.

 

Just to clarify, it is the 5830 that does not come with GDDR5 and is not currently capable of doing so. It is not specific to the Envy 15, but that specific GPU:

The 5850 can use GDDR3 or GDDR5, but of course it is down to the individual vendors as to which is supplied. The 5870 can only use GDDR5 according to the AMD site, but I think this conflicts with other information I've read.

Be careful because the 5850 can come with either GDDR3 or GDDR5. First 5850's in the wild are GDDR3 so far(read: overclocked 5830 ).

 

Indeed, I am terribly sorry for that.

I mean, 5870 and 5850 are *normally* GDDR5. 5830 is the slowed down version of the 5850, and uses either GDDR3 or DDR3.

 

Just got my shipment delay notification. Revised date is 1/30. Email included a $50 store credit, which is rather useless so I think I'll try to get them to apply it to the notebook's price.

I was thinking about using the coupon to get an extra 6-cell battery but I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere on the website. I can find the 9-cell but at $169 its too expensive for something I will rarely, if ever use.

I ordeed mine on the 11th, and although, uncomfortable to have to wait essentially til feb 5-6th still I don't think thats too bad....a 15 day turn around...wont be ready for classes on wednesday next week which wouldve been ideal.

 

i wonder if powdercoating the exterior would void the warranty...

 

i just want to let everybody know, i did receive my envy beats today, order 01/11/10 . i have usb 3.0 and 1333 memory,my cpu was i7 820

 

Sweet, some else got theirs a day or 2 ago and it had 1066 memory if I recall correctly. Sounds like the mem installed is a hit or miss deal

Probably, as you'd have to completely remove everything from the case parts to powder coat it. Not sure how magnesium handles powder-coating, but I can't see as it'd hurt.

 

I'm constantly rechecking my email expecting either a confirmation that my Beat edition with a shipping ETA or the 22nd got cancelled, which I'm hoping now won't happen, or delayed. All this anticipation is going to make me bald

Yeah, I didn't get the second email with the coupon yet either. I did however email HP about my order and asked if the $50 could be applied to the Envy. The Rep. said that they'll credit my credit card $50 when the system ships. Nice.

I think he oppsed, there are 2 SSD options when you go to customize and get to the HD section:

"410GB 5400RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (SSD 160GB + 250GB 5400RPM) "
or
"320GB Dual Solid State Drive Flash Modules (SSD 160GB + SSD 160GB) "

 

No, he said before he installed a 160GB Intel SSD and a 320GB 1.8" HDD. He did the install himself. It's not a factory configuration.

CPU Throttling

I just found a situation where the CPU clock is throttled down: I bought a 90W HP AC adapter today (called KG298AA in Europe). Using this AC adapter instead of the 120W stock adapter caps the multiplier at 11.0, and no turbo boost is permitted. The highest power draw I measured at the wall socket was about 70 W so it seems overly conservative.

There is a workaround: The ThrottleStop utility posted in one of the XPS 1645 threads will unlock turbo boost. After unlocking turboboost my load (at the wall socket) peaked at about 82 W.

 

Cool, could someone who got the 820 cpu post their Experience Index so we can compare?

 

Ditto on the shipping delay notification: ordered 1/8, original ship 1/19, revised ship 1/30. i5-520 model, matte display, with slice battery, without external drive. Haven't received my $50 coupon code yet.

wow, very light, and mousefart quiet too! wrist panel warming up a little, but really only a little warm, not hot or anything. so points for that so far.

 

delay here too. I really want to be able to put it towards a hard drive upgrade, or an extra battery. I also want to hear about the LCd and see if they can change that to matte as well. If not, hopefully they will give me some cash or whatever to keep my current order.

I only got the glossy because I thought I had to to get the discount.
