sounds like an ACPI issue...resolvable by having hp update the bios. eek! I hope you guys get your stuff figured out. I'd call HP and tell them your stuff doesn't work.

Try asking if the USB ports support version 3. Version is hopefully the magic word ;)

I really would like to call them.
The big problem is I got mine in Hong Kong and customer service there is basically non-existent. Plus I am in the UK at the moment. Complicates things up dang it.
    Fixable?
Can this defect be proven anyway?

    Cheers

strange...i figured they would just route all calls to India. Regardless you bought it from HP call CS until you find someone who will fix it. Just use the USA number.

I am interested in buying an LE Beats envy with i7-720QM Processor and ATI HD 5830 Graphics.

As the LE has been discontinued for hp's website would anyone know where I could buy it or if anybody would be willing to sell theres?

I can only find the older models on Ebay and Amazon and not the refreshed models, (the one with USB 3.0) which is the one I am after.

Where did you get it from? I saw some QS versions on ebay for pretty cheap. But they aren't OEM final.

As I live in the UK, I was wondering if the voltages in the UK the same as the US? Would I need any special adapter for the envy if I was to ship it from the US.

Pastor John, you can replace the cpu on the envy? I know you could replace ram and HD, but you can replace the CPU?

Can you even replace the video card ? Or even the mobo

The latest i7 processor beat notebooks received where with ATI 5830 graphics and usb 3.0 as confirmed previously on the forum.

I suspect HP is just being lazy with updating all the information on their website.

Do you have any reason to believe otherwise?

    Abbott (HP CS): Yes.

Costello (Customer): I mean the fellow's name.

    Abbott (HP CS): Who.

No worries, all power supplies are auto-sensing 90-240 V. You just need to get a UK wall cord. Mine is a US model, PSU has EU approval marks.

Does anyone have an extra 'HP HDMI to VGA Display Adapter'?

I forgot to include it when customizing ENVY online.
Now I realize I will need it to connect to projectors.
Without VGA port capability, I won't be able to use ENVY to do presentations in work.

This adapter is always shown as 'Out of stock' on HP website
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/computer/categories/cables/1/accessories/NP031AA%23ABA

Not know what to do now..

I bought a cheap HDMI->VGA cable from ebay. It simply does not work. As mentioned below, HDMI(digital)->VGA(analog) is not easy to implement.
I guess most of people here do not meet this problem since they won't use ENVY to connect projectors.
Called HP customer service/sales, they simply did not know when the adapter will be available.

Perhaps, buying an USB->VGA adapter is my last choice.

Just Google 'HDMI to VGA Display Adapter', there are dozens of aftermarket choices that are much more reasonably priced.

Those other adapters won't work on the Envy since they require you to have a female VGA plug on your laptop. The HP adapter is unique because it converts a male VGA connection (analog) into a female HDMI connection (digital).

It's not really that odd. The vast majority of new monitors don't even support VGA, they are DVI / HDMI. If this was part of their business line then absolutely, it would be a dumb move as a large number of projectors still only sport VGA connectors, but then even these are decreasing in favour of DVI.

Personally I am all in favour of choosing one port over another. In the long term it works in our favour as manufacturers don't need to worry about having a million (ok, three) connections on their display equipment, which should hopefully result in a reduced cost for us consumers. OK, it might only be a marginal saving, but he who cares not about the few pounds / dollars, will end up being in debt most likely.

That makes sense since the Envy isn't geared towards business users. I would've like the VGA port since almost all the projectors I use use it and it's an PITA to have to buy all these adapters and cables.

Will the HP Slim Travel Power Adapter work with the Envy 15? When I Google a PDF compatibility chart from HP, it says it will, but I am doubtful - given that the standard power brick is 120W and is humongous. Has anyone tried the travel adapter, and does put the Envy into limp mode?

I want to have an adapter for home and one for the road, and I'm contemplating if I should use my $50 coupon for an HP big brick adapter, or to get one of these slim adapters. Thoughts?

    Here's the 90W I'm using:

    It's a lot smaller than the 120W.

I'm interested in the answer to this as well. The pdf compatibility chart must be wrong because the wattage doesn't match and the HP Envy 15 isn't listed on the normal description page. That's not saying it won't work, but I don't think HP would want to promise that it works...

I would be surprised if this solution is optimal. The only HP slim adapter I could find on HP's site was 65W according to reviews.

Personally, I wouldn't buy anything less than the 120W adapter. Dell undermatched their XPS 16 with a 90W adapter and is now having issues. In fact, almost everyone on their forum is looking for 120W adapters! Maybe you can trade :p ? HP wouldn't have spent the extra $$ on providing us with a 120W version if it wasn't needed.

Now...if you are going with a base processor, are switching to (1) SSD, and intend to use no external options...well then it might make sense to try and see if a 90W works.

Keep in mind HP touts surge surpression is built-in. Don't try to find the smallest adapter at the expense of your laptop. IMHO it is better to be safe than sorry.

The Envy detects which power supply is connected and throttles the CPU based on that. With the 90W you'll see Core i7 720QM multiplier capped at 11x (1.46 GHz) and no turbo boost. Battery charge times might be longer if you run CPU or GPU flat out.

A 90W PSU should be seen as an alternative for mobility. When you need full performance from CPU and GPU at the same time, while charging battery, then a 120W PSU is a better choice.

Apple has quality problems with that adapter. It overheats, melts the plastic case. The wire is too thin. It's a tiny bit smaller in volume than HP's and Lenovo's 90W adapter. Not much, really.

The only reason Apple gets away with a small adapter is because their laptop is based on an old CPU and underpowered GPU.

Most products with this kind of graphics power require this wattage. I just don't know what the big deal is....if you need something lighter and less powerful, get it.

Kind of like buying a Ferrari and then complaining about gas mileage...
