    Agreed.
Though, you could way back when. Memory on older video cards were modular. CPU cache was also modular when it was on motherboards instead of on package or die. Ah, the good ole days.

Yeah, you may be right about a chassis shortage. That seems like the most likely explanation for what we are seeing. I hope you're wrong: I hope they reconsidered going with the PM55 and are only awaiting HM55s! Although that wouldn't explain why the i7 quad builds aren't shipping. :(

the 5830 is 500/800 for those who were wondering. I can't overclock it either, at least not with the MSI afterburner program.

Let us put it in perspective, new CPUs, new 40nm boards (we all know TSMC problems and ATI shortages), USB 3.0...I mean, almost everything is new for these laptops. Give it some time, and dont bash it for bad drivers, as they are not mature most likely.

It wouldn't get you anything. You'd have to get a new GPU, too.

That's not going to help anything. System memory access is way too slow for GPU use. There's a reason there's a memory controller built into GPUs.

On a lighter note, I just got my $100 USB Blu-Ray drive from Hong Kong (eBay) :D Tested it out, it reads Blu-Rays and DVDs without the secondary power connected, so it looks like I'll probably only need an extra power lead if I try to burn a disc. w00t. It even looks pretty slick... much better than the pictures led me to believe. A nice matte black, no extraneous anything. Just a slimline drive in a black case just big enough for it. Now I really can't wait for my Envy to get here ;)

Edit: this one, except in a black case ;)

$175 for a DL burner that can be used internally in a macbook. I just might end up getting one. Maybe not right now, but probably what I will do is sell the internal DVD drive of the MBP and then buy an internal blu ray as a replacement when they become available.

Ah, thats good to know. It looks like we ordered similar systems although mines the none beats edition - 820QM/6 gig/5830/Anti Glare/Slimline battery. So far, other than all the bloat HP likes to add that I'm getting rid of as soon as mine shows, are you pleased with it?

Also was it you that got the bad score with 3dmark Vantage or someone else? If you haven't had a chance to yet could you run it and post the results as I'm kind of curious. I know it wont match my desktops 5970 by a long shot but am hoping it will do better than the old GPU of 1st revision.

    Thanks ever so much

I followed that link to consider one for myself but the link takes me to information for an internal drive. Is there an external version as well? I was sort of looking at the Asus one but always open to other options

Are there any decent external blu-ray burners available?

I dream of a day when I can take my HD camcorder videos and burn them to blu-ray and replay them in the PS3.

Or should I just wait until the USB 3.0 versions become more widely available?

I probably will. Actually most videos will reside on my HP Media Server (which is why I stuck to the base 320GB HD). Right now, I only have (1) 1TB drive, but it is expandable to 17TB if necessary.

That being said, I still would like to have an archival/sharing strategy.

You can probably buy a blue ray driver connect to your home server. I am not sure whether WHS can expose bd drver to your laptop though.
LG has blue ray nas which can be used as iscsi target.

Thanks, it looks like it will be best to buy another 1-2TB drive in the short term and use the PS3 for streaming. It would really be nice if HP offered an external USB 3.0 BD burner that would match the Envy down the road.

I am a little disappointed with the current options/price points.

Ironically this was one of the reasons that pushed me to the Envy. Dell and Lenovo don't currently offer any blu-ray burners. I figured if I had to get an external model after the purchase, it made no sense to have all that space wasted on an optical drive.

Of course, my expected usage would be no more than every few weeks so I won't miss having the internal option.

stock settings with my notebook was 8530 (i had the same stuff running in the background for both tests, objectdock, steam, mycolors, firefox, and more). so a 300 point increase isn't too shabby... i won't be overclocking again though, not till the tool had temp readings built in. I imagine 9000 won't be too hard to break, and the i7 crowd can already hit it no doubt.

It wont burn out, itll just freeze or crash.

I got the 4830 pretty high, no heat issues... a few freezes but i backed it off and it was stable.

Try 550/935, that is a good starting point for the upper end. The ram overclock will influence the score much more than the core overclock.

Im hoping to nail the 10k+ mark when I get my i7 system next week. Should be easy considering i got the 4830 up to 9450.

Actually if you want to really test it out and don't mind downloading the app, sorry for asking so much, you could give Unigine's Heaven benchmark a shot. Its a good tool that will actually test out the DX11/OpenGL features. I'd love to see how it handles with the Envy 15. :D

You can get it HERE They also have some other tests you can download as well but they are DX9-10.x/OpenGL

I don't get why the 1600 will run at cl7 running at 1600 but only 9 running at 1333. wonder if i should cancel and reorder the pc 1333 instead of the pc 1600

I have 5tb of wd green, and the 2tb pushes almost 120MBps... Faster than many 7200rpm drives. They ramp up in rpm as needed, but concerning access time you are right in them being a little bit slower.

Wow, HP Customer Service has been pretty useless. It seems they have little or bad information (even just regarding shipping) and have no accountability for disseminating that info. I have also run across multiple instances of CSR's not transferring me to the survey at the end of the call (even after a good experience).

I was finally able to place an additional purchase for a Slice at almost the add-on cost. Then I applied my delay coupon for $50 and I am getting the extra battery shipped to me for less than $100. It took me over an hour on the phone but I was able to work it out in the end. I had a 1/18 build date and they are also telling me it will be built on the 26th and delivered on the 28th.

HP CS is going to make me bald pulling my hair out, LOL. I try not to be judgmental but there have been at least 2 times I had to say "I'll hang up and call back" because the person was so hard to understand when they spoke and to understand what I was saying.

    One good example
Me: Hi I just wanted to check something. The Envy 15 comes with USB 3.0 right?

CS: Let me check...hold for 2 minutes...Yes the envy come with 3 UBS ports.

Me: No, I asked if they come with USB 3.0 type ports

CS: Oh okay, let me check....wait on hold.....I checked and yes it does come with 3 usb port.

    Me: NM, I'll call back

Hi guys, phew I have been reading from page 610 to here (hopefully still page 681...) since a while ago! And found this same problem happening to my Envy of this fellow user.

Anyone know of anything about such situation please? This does happen to mine as well. It just could happen at any situation, literally, randomly.

And I can confirm this is NOT a shut down. If I have audio on (say spotify, or streaming video) it still plays. Just no display at all.
