For starters, the 620 UM only supports up to 800 MHz DDR3... so there's a performance hit there. If it's possible: I don't know. I haven't got my laptop yet to open her up and take a look at stuff like that for myself.
-
Yes it should be 2 x 2GB installed (lower cost than 1 x 4GB for HP). It would make sense that they come installed in the 2 internal slots.
It is easy to check, just shut down machine and turn over with the touchpad side toward you, remove 6 cell battery and look under the far edge where the latches are (under the rectangular cover plate with 3 screws), this is where the 2 accesable slots are. If those slots are in use you will see the edge of the modules (similar to images in the link I posted earlier).
I'll see if i can find a link to the service manual and post it below. -
There is no performance hit. DDR3 is fast enough for just about everything out right now. Maybe ocne you get a really high end 4 or 6 core it might actually be starved of memory bandwidth, but for a dual core, 800mhz is more than enough.
-
You'd have hoped they were the inaccessible ones, but who knows. I know that in the first place, the Envy on sale in the UK was supposed to ship with only a single 4GB SODIMM, thereby leaving 3 slots free. I don't think that's what actually happened though - so I think it's fair to expect 2x2GB.
Yeah ok, point award
Yeah, there have been sporadic reports saying some machines come with 1066MHz and some with 1333MHz. I have a theory that they have a bin at the production plant full of memory modules packed together, and it's kind of like a lucky dip. -
Here is a link to the service manual for the envy 1060 on HP's site:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01911053.pdf
Page 46 and 47 show the modules mentioned in my last post with instructions. note: it is a 2.5MB .pdf file -
The breakout box wont do on the fly encoding from uncompressed pcm channels, what it does do is take compressed 5.1 or 7.1 from the hdmi stream(dd thru dd truehd or dts thru dts ma) and strip off the HD portion of the stream (leaving "vanilla" DD AC3 5.1 or DTS 5.1) and sending that thru the optical/toslink. This is a viable option to get discrete sound to an optical/spdif only receiver.
Having a full blown HD Audio HDMI Reciver at home is usually the case, but when using the Envy as a portable DVD/BD player... the situation you are in doesnt always have that. Optical/Spdif/Digital Coax is very prevalent still in mediocre home theater setups. -
Any updates on the shipping dates ?
I suspect HP might push back the shipping dates again ?? -
I ordered the 16th and my order just shipped! Estimated date was the 28th.
Envy 15 with i7 and 1080P Matte Screen -
Me too!!! =D
-
Me 3!!
I am excited! -
Me 4!!
Can't wait to get it delivered. -
Me 5.
Hopefully I get it today or tom max. -
I ordered on the 8th and my order has been delayed until the 30th. Those who get it, please write some reviews and post some benchmark results!
-
I wouldn't be surprised if your order shipped today as well. Mine was scheduled for the 28th. So two days early is great! HP was probably being conservative.
-
-
Me 6- Ordered on the 16th, and got shipping notice this morn.
-
Okay here is what I asked and what they just now replied:
ME - "Several people told me that the unit would not convert the uncompressed HDMI 5.1/7.1 audio into 5.1/7.1 PCM, DD and/or DTS transmitted via the ToS cable. Is that correct? I was under the impression that it would so figured best to ask you directly so I get the most informed answer."
Octava - "If you play a DOLBY Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 DVD , we can send the 5.1 over the Toslink.Bottom line is that you will get 5.1 from the toslink.
We do it all the time in the lab.
Thank You,
Customer Support

Ordered on the 8th and no shipping notice email yet or hp.com order status update
-
Thanks again for the links and info!
My Envy just shipped (scheduled for the 28th).
Since I am trying to save money I will probably opt for (2) of those 2GB modules. I figure at that price if the 4GB versions drop in price later this year I can just replace and still be ahead. -
I submitted my exchange on Jan. 7 with estimated build date of Jan. 26 and I got shipping confirmation today also. No record in Fedex yet. I received my Bing cashback a couple days ago so I probably could have canceled the exchange and got a full refund + Bing cashback
. My exchange was for 820QM and slot-load blu-ray so they do have blu-ray drives lying around but just don't want to sell it for some reason.
-
...or you got the last one they had in stock. I remember it was showing up on the customize tab at one point but they ran out. I've also checked with parts using the actual part for the drive and it says to check a list of outside HP vendors for availability/Out of stock.
-
My Envy shipped today too with standard 5-7 day. Yet another lie by HP reps. I was told they upgraded mine to 2 day due to delay. When I go to Fedex page, the only thing that is displayed though is a red warning saying all pickups from Haiti are suspended. I really hope they did not send it thru Haiti.
-
Well I'm baffled. I have 2 orders with HP;
1) ordered 1/7 sched. build 1/19 delayed to 1/30 ( told 1/26) no notice yet
2) ordered 1/15 sched. build 1/28 shipped today
Identical models except one is glossy screen and the second is anti glare -
Orders I placed on January 9th are still in production but the orders I placed on Jan 15th are shipped today. HP is having hard time prioritizing the orders.
-
The Haiti message appears on my fedex tracking # as well. This is a generic message that appears on all tracking#s. Its more of an FYI thing. Dont worry.
-
Seems they are trying to ship asap the later orders to make it without much delay.
At cost of delaying the firsts orders even more.
Mine supposed to be shipped on 28 I get the 2 days shipping.
If mine its shipped today too that would be even wierd. But I doubt
I'm waiting for you guys too to get your envy to show us more test!
-
My envy just shipped too.. hopefully its worth the wait..
looks like fedex system just needs time to update. -
Update: One of the older orders got shipped too. It looks like all of the Envy's will be shipped today no matter when you ordered it.
-
Mine finally shipped this morning, and I ordered on the 9th. Hopefully that means yours is about to ship
-
lets hope they didn't rush all of them too much to the point where the defect rate is high...
-
I had a nice surprise this morning to.
I ordered my battery slice last night and when i woke up this morning i had 2 shipping confirmations about 15 minutes apart so i was assuming that the shipping notification for the slice was sent twice. just for giggles i opened both e-mas and sure enough one was for the laptop. mine was not suppose to ship until the 28th.
I am feeling very happy today
-
Same here. My second order (the older one) just acknowledged.
-
Got my shipment notice just now. It's still listed as 5-7 days too.
-
OMG!!
so you are telling that your shipping date was the 28th (for your laptop) and you get your shipping confirmation today??
That's correct?
Because my shipping date its also 28!!
; I'm praying to get the confirmation also today
-
Shipped! But, not on record with fedex yet.
-
Hopefully I'm not the only one that opens new electronics like a little kid at Christmas, right?
I haven't decided on a laptop yet, just watching all of the threads closely. Waiting on you all to be the guinea pigs! -
FYI, if this is your first HP order coming from China, here is what to expect;
Fedex tracking numbers can take 1 day+ to show up in thier system. HP actually ships units in bulk air cargo containers from China to the USA. The next stop is Anchorage AK, where they go through customs. From there they will either go to Oakland CA or Memphis TN which are HP warehouse / distribution centers, this is where the individual computers are uncrated and then 're-shipped' to you.
Once they depart Anchorage it goes very quickly. -
yep, mine was scheduled for the 28th and was ordered on the 15th.
-
Yeah, I was told the exact same thing about shipping. It's one thing to have a delay, but to lie about something to customers is just disgusting. The latter is borderline inexcusable to me. I hope the Envy is good enough where I forget how irritated I am now! If not, I am pretty confident it will be my last experience with HP.
I had some hope that the original delivery estimate was conservative, but it looks like FedEx didn't move my Envy for 24 hours after it entered their system. I guess I'll be antisocial this Friday night as I'm messing with my new toy. -
Hey, at least you guys are $50 richer...Imagine how the people feel who had theirs shipped early? We got screwed
Just keep things in perspective, it appears HP handled things pretty well overall. People with delayed shipments received a $50 coupon while others received their laptops slightly ahead of schedule.
Yes the misinformation is frustrating. Not an excuse, but seems to be consistent with all the brands shipping these refreshed systems (Lenovo, Dell, Sony). If you don't believe me check out the other forums.
And no...I didn't see examples of other people receiving coupons for the delays.
With my luck I'll recieve my laptop on Monday and I am due to be out of town next week.
-
with 5-7 day shipping, we probably won't see the machines until next week, right?
-
Just checked my email, and had my shipping notice waiting for me there. A whole 3 days before I expected it. Looks like they are finally ramping up to meet demand.
-
Mine shipped today as well, ordered on the 8th
-
Mine is supposed to be delivered on Friday. The status is currently "on-time." I'm not sure about whether those that shipped this morning will be here this week or not.
-
out of curiousity, for you 16gb guys, what type of applications are you running?
-
I don't think the line problem is an issue anymore with the latest bios update. I have a new 1080 bright view and i don't have any lines.
-
I run quite a few memory hungry apps, eclipse, visual studio, mysql server, tomcat, virtual machines (OSX, etc), couple of other servers (work related stuff) plus all the other office apps, etc...
I am telling you, the i7-820 is running all that stuff like a dream. This thing is a little mobile power house. Running a virtual machine on my previous systems always degraded overall performance. On this processor, I can't really tell whether the VM is running or not
-
shipping number entered today. not in fedex system. meh
-
I ordered on the 8th - i7, HD Briteview.
I just got confirmation of shipping and a FedEx number but it doesn't show up in FedEx.
If they person who had all of the "hops" required to get them to the USA is correct, I'm praying that Anchorage, AK has good weather!
Now I've got to figure out what I'm going to use my coupon for.
-
Is the Envy showing up as an "Envy15t" on everyone's shipping confirmation. I just want to make sure I'm not getting some Gen1 version versus the refresh.
