I think somebody said that they don't allow that combination of discounts.

It no longer works as of October 2009. Its in the BING faq 'what do i need to know about shopping at HP' or something like that.

It worked last year, so do not go on what other people say as they may not be aware of the change.

I believe a couple poeple tried to use EPP or the academic discount with the 25% on the 18th. We won't know for 60 days if they are enforcing the no combination of discounts.

Edit: Ah, now I see it.

I was talking from my experience with E1705 with 1920x1200 screen too. I use it for photography (Lightroom) and I can see how higher resolution can help. In fact I paid more for this screen for this reason only. But in real life, I now use my much larger desktop monitor with 1680x1050 resolution to edit the photos. I don't wear glasses but I can't judge IQ at the pixel level in that E1705 screen. And also for everyday use, the DPI in Vista has been set at 125%.

So in the end, what did I gain? If you search my last few posts in this thread, you can find the discussion we had on this several pages back. I just didn't want to get headache (and glasses) so had to move to the external monitor. But with 120dpi in Vista, it's quite usable but the effective resolution is just 1536x960.

1440x900 would be really good and that's the resolution of my dell latitude (work laptop). I think it's 15.4". But E15 is 16:9, so may be 1600x900 wouldn't be bad either. 1366x768 can be too low sometimes but 1080p is way too much at this screen size.

Read on the big FAQ that they dont allow it. Some did it and if bing doesn't catch it they win. If bing catches it then he might get no discount at all.

    Mandrake,

Ditto what peppe1 said...used to work (did for me last month) but they changed their policy. Some people still insist it will work but I wouldn't trust that.

You can also google "HP EPP COMPANY CODE" there are a few out there. But they all seems or at least most around 8% discount on the Envy 15 though.

So the big question now (for me at least) is how does the slice battery affect the heat. Does the slice battery block the underside intake ports? Is that really why they have them on the front as well? Does the slice block the heat and make the laptop completely usable while gaming on your lap. Would that extended exposure to heat be bad for the battery?

Doesn't block the intake ports. The slice is dented along that edge ( http://www.engadget.com/photos/envy-13-and-15-hands-on-1/2283524/).

    Bottom: http://www.engadget.com/photos/envy-13-and-15-hands-on-1/2283510/

Heat is not great for most electronics/batteries, so it may affect the life of the slice. The slice looks to use a metal case, so it might have been designed to absorb and dissipate the heat.

I really hope that is how it would work... but somehow the more i read about this laptop the less i think HP put practicality as a key issue in the design process.

This is really discouraging as i was all set to buy this thing. It has everything i want in a laptop... except for the ability to not set my house on fire.

Looking forward to more reviews on this thing. Until then the upcoming Lenovo Y550 is looking pretty snazzy (but doesn't have a 1080p screen :( )!

Those dents don't look very deep to allow very much airflow to the GPU and CPU vent??

segail11, did you get a slice with your Envy? If so, can you address any of kevroc's questions (I echo his questions as well). Thanks!

Normally systems intake from the bottom and expel to the sides or back. Although shooting air from the bottom would be cool. Maybe we could make it levitate.

Well HP has officially screwed me out of my $90 BCB on my 3 year warranty. I am on the phone with them right now. I said that if they don't match the 25% discount for their blunder I will cancel my entire order. I am not happy.

Since we all have been speculating whether this thing has an e2e screen, I just wanted to point out on this model that was given to engadget : http://www.engadget.com/photos/envy-13-and-15-hands-on-1/2283517/
http://www.engadget.com/photos/envy-13-and-15-hands-on-1/2283533/ doesn't have one.... and this reiview has been up over a month!!!! I'm suprised I didn't notice sooner. I know these are pre production models but I just wanted to point that out, since hp has been giving everybody a rollercoaster ride of what to expect with the envy.

OK I just got off the phone with HP. I had to get a bit ill with the rep but in the end they gave me a 25% discount on the warranty. The rep said my notebook should be shipping on the 30th or 31st. What a mess. This has taken about 4 hours of my time to get resolved.

    Fedex does deliver on Sat.

Also iT, I don't think they would care, last time I called and said to them that if they won't send me the laptop because my billing and shipping is not the same then i'll never buy from them again, and the rep just said to me. Okay then Bye bye.

If you expect a high-end notebook (hardware wise) to be quite and cool under stress, which any game is, then you are just naive. ANY notebook with high gfx or CPU will run hot. And this will feel worse in Envy's case, as the case is a metal, and therefore conducts the internal heat more efficient.

At first I could believe your observations. That its hotter than its suppose to be, but when i read your complaints about the noise from the fan when playing, you lost all your credibility. Any laptop would either make a lot noise or shut down.

So my conclusion is clearly that your expectations for this laptop were unrealsticly high.

Its like buying a fast car, and then complain about the gas consumption.

If the cooling pad blows air up and the exhaust is coming out of the bottom then you are negating most of the air flow through the notebook. It is almost like covering 80 of the vents with a blanket. Did you consider that?

The intake vents on the Envy are in front of the laptop.
Underneath and on the sides are exhausts IIRC.

    I updated the front post.

I was think of making a little copper cooling stand to try and dissipate the heat through the base, but this guy modded a ton inside as well...

This doesn't seem to make sense to me... I agree the front and side are exhausts but I am pretty sure the bottom vents are intakes and see here for the fans, I believe these work the same as discrete GPUs in tower PCs.
