I would really appreciate that. I am using your 100% matte on my glossy right now and while it is not perfect(seems a touch green), it is far better than either the gen 1 glossy calibration or the one I attempted to make on my own using windows calibration tool.

Obviously we will never get perfect results since each panel is different, but at least we can get closer than the default. I didn't realize how blue it was until I used one of the warmer calibrations. At 100% it looks pretty good, but when I turn the brightness down it start to look off.

Does anyone know how to remove the RAID 0 configuration? I want to use the drives separately so I can use the TRIM option. Thanks in advance

Would you mind posting a link to the Amazon cable? I want to see the cable (hopefully, up close). And, you say this cable already comes with the case, right?

I think the easiest way to install an ICC profile is to simply "right click" and select install. It should automatically place the profile in the appropriate folder.

You'll still need to go into the control panel, change settings, advanced, and select the ICC profile you want to use.

I still have both laptops, both are i7-720 and the refresh does seem to run a little cooler... although the old one did not run that hot. Niether ran as hot as my MacBookPro.

xRite (formerly Gretag Macbeth) has two profile management tools that are quite handy when comparing the effect of profiles:

DisplayProfile lets you switch between profiles with a click.
    http://www.xrite.co.uk/product_overview.aspx?ID=757&Action=support&SoftwareID=539

CalibrationTester shows the gamma LUTs currently loaded.
    http://www.xrite.co.uk/product_overview.aspx?ID=757&Action=support&SoftwareID=546

    Both are freeware.

I guess I'm kind of dumb. How do I use/apply it? I managed to install it and if I go to display/advanced settings and then to color management on the first tab I checked the option "Use my settings for this device" and it lists the profile and its marked "Matte Display 100% BRT 2.2 (default) but I didn't notice any change take place. Do I have to do something else?

Also While I do like the color a bit better how do I go back to default if I want my transparent back.

I am interested in learning if you are able to update the drives. My understanding is that intel's update tool did not recognize the G1 drives so they couldn't be updated.

Even for people running raid, I guess the drives could be unraided to apply the updates and then raided back.

So I called HP and they're going to send me a new 2gb dimm to replace the one right by the battery.

    Hopefully this solves my woes.

Ninthparadigm, how much ram do you have? have you tried removing the supposedly defective ram piece and seeing if it still crashes on you?

just tried intel updater iso.. no luck but that could be becuase of the dos boot environment not having drivers (seems silly since it is an intel chipset.)

When I do get around to opeining this up I will try one of the drives on an older system.

the version of the bios that ships with the system does support trim though..

I thought the new i5 versions only have 2 RAM slots? Also be curious is anything was reinforced or changed.

Even after taking the 'defective' piece out, I still get the same crashes in games that I got before.

At worst, i'll be getting a replacement, or at least I hope.

T.T ninthparadigm, if that's the case, I think it might be the other ram module that's defective!

You should definately let them know about your findings and make them do the exchange and stop wasting your time. =X

Remove the accessible RAM module and run a memtest to be sure that's the faulty one.

And what's the deal with the HD5830 for i5 and the HD5830 for i7 on the configuration page.

Do I need to purchase special brackets to install 2 1.8" hard drives in the envy? If there is, whats the part number or where can I find it?

    Thanks ^^;;

    That's simple:

It differentiates the mothbaord at the factory. Since the 5830 is soldered onto the board, the easiest way for them to know which one to use is determined by processor, then the selector for either 5830 w/i5 or i7.

I highly doubt the cooling system has changed any since the system is so thin. Not much room to work with ;)

Until someone opens up both the 4830 and 5830 version (and also compares i5 vs i7) and takes pictures we really don't have confirmation that these are identical inside. Especially since an updated maintenance manual doesn't seem to be available yet.

I looked again on the first page and only saw pictures from the old chassis. I find it hard to believe comments like, "frame doesn't flex like old one" if no improvements were made. Unless the first one simply had some loose screws...

I did that as well, and IT PASSED.

FYI, i'm doing the HP system diagnostic memtest and the one from the BIOS. I also ran the one that's executed in Windows.

I had mentioned this on the first Envy thread, when I first was having issues, I was consistently getting a failure on the memory test through BIOS, but now that doesn't seem to be the case.

More than likely, I'm betting a replacement will happen.

Can someone with a 2nd Gen Glossy screen confirm that on the sides of the screen bezel (not top) there is only one smaller pad near the bottom (about half the size of the pads of the top)?

Cause on the first gen glossy I remember they were using a ugly longer pad. Glad they made it smaller.

That sounds like a great idea. Except two problems:

    - My i7 Envy isn't due to arrive until Tuesday and I will be out of town until Thursday
    - I never owned a first generation version (or even saw one in person)

Which is why I asked if anyone saw an updated maintenance manual...

You responded that you were positive there was no changes so it wouldn't matter. I figured if you were so confident, you must of had info the rest of us haven't seen.

    Yes, I am confident.

I have seen both and screw placement is exactly the same.

naturally, opening the system will be the same.

Once inside, If you aren't technical enough to figure out what's what then you shouldn't be inside the system anyways ;)

I'm curious. Since taking the Envy apart involves removing the rubber feet, how are people putting these back on? I've lost rubber feet on my old Dell Inspiron and never got them to stay back on with crazy glue.

use a very thin blade or flathead and gently pry them loose. loosen them from all sides, i accidentaly tore one of the feet in half being too hasty. they will retain their stickiness. just don't make a habit of taking the feet off and on often, the adhesiveness will wear off and you'll have to use glue or rubber cement. I managed to talk my way into a free replacement set of feet, but otherwise you have to pay $50 for a replacement kit.

Once the feet are off its an easy breakdown, the hardest thing is reattaching the keyboard cable.

Well I talked to HP yesterday about the wireless speed issue. They didn't have a fix and suggested it was my router. Well, I just swapped out routers (and wasted my extended warranty exchange at Fry's. I gave up the WRT310N for a WRT320N (Linksys). Still no change. My girlfriend's 5-year old laptop gets about 18Mbps on wireless and this Envy gets about 10 Mbps. I'm not expecting equality, but that is a considerable difference on a 20 Mbps connection. Can a driver update fix something like this or is the wireless on these computers crippled by design/hardware?

Yes, the cable comes with the case. No need to buy an extra one.

Yeah, it's a little pricey. But it's also the only eSATAp case you can get, and for $22? That's less than a lot of normal cases. Heck, poke around their site... you order more than $50 worth of stuff or something like that and they give you cheap shipping on the whole order. There are lots of other gadgets and such to get ;)

Maybe you don't read posts very thoroughly. I am not asking whether the screws on the outside are exactly the same or whether you think I have the technical experience to open a laptop. It is never wise to make assumptions about other people's skill level.

    I simply wanted to know:

    - Is an updated maintenance manual available for the 2nd gen Envy?
    - If someone is claiming they are exactly the same...have they opened both?... and do they have pictures?

Hey guys, sorry for taking so long with this but for anyone still interested in trying out profiles for the matte screen I've put the download link below. Let me know what you think, so far I like it. I can test to calibrate to different conditions but after looking around on the colorvision boards Gamma 2.2 and 6500K seem to be the settings to use.
