I used the colour profile posted by JJB and it has worked well at warming up the display.

Thanks, I tried those but my problem isn't in warming up the display. I can do that easily just using CCC. My problem is how BRIGHT the actual screen is. I mean, my iPhone has a brighter screen than this thing. I just need to know if this is how these laptops ARE or if my unit isn't as bright as others. For an "ultrabright hd" screen I am really not impressed if they all are like this....

Use HWiNFO32 and give us your screen's make and model. I believe I can try to trace your particular model with ones listed by users who also own an "Ultra BV 1080p Glossy" panel. If your model doesn't match with the general consensus, I believe someone has done a panel swap on yours and if it is the same model, yours is defective.

    HWiNFO32 Download

The 1080p Panels HP used on the Envy 15 should be sourced from LG-Philips.

    Mine is the LG LP156WF1-TLE1.

I wonder if I'm just spoiled by my other bright screen at home.. Considering I use the PC for work its really hard to have to ship it off to get looked at. This is driving me nuts :(

Looks like you got the right panel. Apparently you will be disappointed but the TLE1 was a revision panel they added for the 2nd Generation models. People that got replacements on their Envy 15 at the time discovered that the TLE1's are not as bright as the older ones. I personally had an Anti-Glare 1080p that was TLB1 and it was bright as heck, so I believed it was TLD1 that was the original Ultra BV.

In conclusion, I don't know how you ended up getting a Generation 1 Envy with a TLE1, but the TLE1 is not that bright I am afraid. :(

Think I could be a squeaky wheel and complain to HP and have them replace it with a TLD1?

You could, but I doubt they will be that detailed to find one for you in the repair center. You could go Anti-Glare and order a TLB1 off of ScreenCountry.com and switch it yourself! :)

I can vouch that the TLB1 AG (Matte) is very, very bright!

PS: I don't know if it was really TLD1, but the ones people complained like you is the TLE1, so avoid those!

Which one is the brightest glossy? I can't use matte, I do too much photography/graphic editing.

Weird, my dad is a semi-professional photographer. He HATES glossy with a passion and so do I. The glare is just too much to endure. However, if you buy the right matte panel, the colors will still be there, especially if you have the money to burn on an IPS.

Go with the 1080p Glossy then and tell them in the comments to NOT give you a TLE1. I think to be safe you can ask them before you order if they can guarantee you a panel that is not TLE1.

They are kind of weird like that because originally I tried to order from them a TLD2 AG from them, but they got me the TLB1 instead and the TLB1 was just fantastic!

Remember, ScreenCountry and other third-party vendors don't guarantee you that they can get you the same, exact model screen that you want, but they will definitely try to get you a similar, compatible one. In this case, you do want a similar one but the not the exact one, since the exact one is the one you are loathing right now! :p

im deciding between this or the envy 14...my purpose for this is to replace my laptop with something nice that will last me a while. I will be playing games, but casually because i already have a ps3. Games like Crysis 2, Just Cause 2, Mafia 2, Black Ops, NFS and so on. i live in canada so the only model here is with an i7 720qm and 8gb ddr3 ram and also the 5830. What kind of battery life can expect? the envy 14 is 200 dollars cheaper and comes with an i5 460m and 6gb ddr3 and a 5650. i went to my local futureshop and the envy 15 felt pretty hot, while the 14 was pretty cool...is this a huge issue? please someone help me decide. this laptop will be most of the time plugged in but i need portability with it as well when i go on long trips and such

    Thanks

You might get a couple of hours out of it on the standard battery. Get the battery slice if you want extra time. I have the 15 and as a software architect I love its power, but I would probably not travel with it unless I expected to have access to AC power. It is definitely somewhat hot. Right now the front left side underneath is quite hot, too much to leave my hand there for very long. I have 16 GB RAM and an SSD/HDD combo, and I am on full power, but still, it's not a system to sit in your lap. I have a clever folding aluminum tray I use If I want to sit in a chair and use it.

I actually do travel with mine quite often. The slice battery is worth every penny if you want to run away from an outlet. I'll get 3 hours of gaming use out of it with the slice, and 5-6 hours just normal work and such.

But I also have the i5 version... looks like you have the i7 version since you have 16GB of RAM. That sucker eats battery ;)

Just a word of caution. The extra slice battery is HEAVY!!!. I had the Envy + Slice for about 6 months.
It does at 3-4 hours of power though. You may want to scale down your graphics clock if possible to save power.

myk7, I tried the vanilla 11.2 also in my gen 1 and had to roll back out. You might check with the guys over at Guru3d and see if anyone over there has done it. I personally haven't spent the time trying to figure out what is killing the install, but on the Gen 1, at least, HP seems to have done something that prevents the installation of ATI generic notebook drivers, and not just the 11.2's.

One other thing, as opposed to the 10.9 drivers, at least one 5000 series user lost about 1k off his 3dmark06 score when he finally got the 11.2's installed.

    @Martin96

Bear in mind that games aren't really playable on battery on the i7 Envy 15. Because of the massive power draw of the processor the battery isn't able to supply enough power it run it at full speed without catching on fire. On battery the processor is locked down to 1.2ghz making most modern games run at about 10FPS. You can only play games on mains power.

    Hi guys.

I got my Envy 15 here 2 weeks ago, and i have been very pleased with it so far.

But i have an annoying squeaking sound from the left click on the mousepad. Like the pad itself is totally aligned, has anyone else seen this?

Should i get it to service (lose it for 10-15 days :( ), or is there a quick fix?

    Hello everybody

First of all I'm French so please excuse my poor english but I will try to do my best!
I have an ENVY 15 Beats Edition bought in December 2009 and recently I have a trouble with my RAM
Indeed I have normally 8GB (4*2) but since few time Win7 tells me that only 3.99 are usable althought it detects that 8GB are well install. I have not remove or open anything on the computer when this has happened.
Maybe that kind of problem is already notice on this thread but there is too many pages to me to find it.

Anybody has and idea for troubleshoot?

    Thanks for your help

I had the same problem with my first Envy 15. The reason is that the touchpad is not seated properly and I did send it in for servicing, but the technicians were so stupid that they believe it was not a problem and refused to repair it. I suggest avoid wasting the time sending it in and see if you can acquire a new top cover on the cheap as they should be like $60 dollars now for the part.

Did you try to switch RAM positions, like take the RAM from under the keyboard and put that in the slot next to the battery and vice-versa? Sometimes RAM modules don't work as well in position and vice-versa and they have to be seated in specific slots  .

I had a similar problem with mine. removing and re-seating the RAM fixed the problem for me. That's easy to try. Wipe off the connector of the RAM while you have it out, just in case a piece of dust got in there.

NOTE: it's also important which slots are used, please check the manual.

I have the Envy 15 1021TX, and I am wondering if there is space to replace the existing HDD with the 1TB HDD from Western Digital?

This drive is a little thicker, and am wondering about the heat transfer between it and the wrist rest as even the 320GB that I have installed gets quite warm.

I don't think so. The caddy itself was only able to fit the traditional sizes. If you add something a but thicker, the screw holes won't align together correctly.

Probably never. HP announced I think that they are refreshing the E14 with Sandy Bridge and the E17 is already in the Sandy Bridge form. Having an E15 is pointless with the E14 around.

Alienware looks like they are doing the same thing with the m14x replacing, IMHO, the superior m15x.

Just started to play Brink and the frame rates at lowest settings are unplayable.

    Catalyst Version: 11.2

    [edit] This is for a Envy 15 i7-820, 8gb ram, ati 4830

thx Star Forge, can you link me to 4830 ppl that have managed to get it working?

I just tried updating and it resulted in Blue screens.

11.2 installs fine but required a manaul update via device manager to work, and then after that CCC would not open, instead would give a message that "demo mode" was enabled, but did not give me access tot eh CCC panel to disable it.

    Trying 11.4 now

ok 11.4 was a huge failure...

install went fine, then blue screened on restart. restart got to the "starting windows" message then froze, left running for about 10mins before i forced shutdown. (held power button) restarted again this time would not allow me to go to safe mode only startup repair or start windows normally. tried normal first but same error so went to start up repair.

startup repair said i had to do a windows restore, this was fine since i did a manual save state prior to playing with drivers. tried to restore to that point. no good, files were corrupt. tried an earlier restore, still no good, tried a restore from last month. no good still.

restarted and HP backup and restore options came up. tried to do a backup. scanned for files and found 130gb. told it to copy to external drive. failed. apparently 100gb free is not enough free space to compress the files...

So took lappy apart to get to hdd, cleaned up the fans and some dust while i was at it. transfered all my files to another pc. (forgot to backup my favourites.. .) did a clean install of win7 installed latest drivers and exactly the same errors. (previously i was using the HP win7 image)

Installed win7 again and used the Hp drivers and all is good.

I dont think i will play with the drivers any time soon...

Greetings fellow 15 owners. Haven't made my way over here in quite some time. Hopefully everyone's 15 is running a LOT better than mine. It's recently started doing this fun trick where is just ... turns off. No warning, no nothing. I'm guessing it's overheating but it will do it after it's been running for 15 mins while typing and email, but not necessarily while messing around with huge models in Revit.

Been through two motherboards, two power bricks, a new display, and a new slice battery.

    Sigh. What a lemon.

Three in my case. The first broke, not properly packaged when traveling and that was my fault. The second one, (an HP-approved charger) I was just playing Darkspore some time ago and the charger went "pof" and died. I pried it open and found it to be completely burnt, not to mention all the plastic outside deformed. The third was a third-party adapter that simply stopped working with my computer. I'm on the fourth and a fifth as a back-up.

After almost 2 years, 2 AS5 applications, cleaning and everything, the GPU runs hot most of the time now, especially when playing EVE... I am forced to downclock it to 133-266 to keep it quiet. Don't get me wrong, I love my first-gen Envy, but geez...extreme usage does have its side-effects. Funny thing, Minecraft taxes my CPU sometimes...odd.

well apart from the GFX card issues mines currently going strong after 2.5 years.

As soon as i received it the KB stopped working, took a month to replace as stock was so low. but after that all good.

Fans make a bit of noise when they first start up. Its my desktop replacement and is on about 8 hours a day 5 days a week. In summer i need a fan blowing across the KB to keep it cool, (my room gets to 30c+) in winter temps max out at 60c i do keep everything downclocked so i take a performance hit but the cooler temps are worth it.

I used to have a 90w power brick (ebay) that lasted me about a year before it melted.

Id anyone has any first hand experience with the latest Ati drivers let me know!

Honestly I just gave up with the drivers. Our 4830s are the oddest GPUs out there, 3rd step cards that work around 47x0 performance and consume as much as 48x0.

AFAIK the Envy 15 is the only laptop ever with this GPU inside...

I just heard some people managed to get the drivers installed fine on the earlier pages but I am not sure. I haven't owned an Envy 15 since January and I had the 2nd Generation version with the 5830M.

If you installed over the HP stock drivers, in might work as I think the 4830M relies on the drivers from HP to work in general, then you get the boost from an overwritten driver. It is like in a sense on people with the Envy 14 is coping with ATI switchable graphics in a sense that their switchable graphics only work if they installed the ATI drivers over the HP OEM ones. Otherwise, their computer won't work or won't have switchable graphics enable and working properly.

So it would be like this:

    1. Install whatever HP has on their site.
    2. Install ATI Catalyst 11.X over it.

    OR

There is a method where I can trick the .inf of the ATI files into taking your 4830M's hardware ID and it will force install that way, but it is hard to do since I don't know the hardware ID in its exact format for the 4830M.

What perplexs me is that the 5830M was also an Envy 15 exclusive GPU and ATI Catalyst updates still work with it naturally.

Im selling my Envy but i wanted to show off the cooler I made for it before its gone. It forces cold air into the bottom and front vents of the Envy. Then all the hot air is pushed out the side vents. This thing makes the Envy run with zero heat at full load. The palm rest even feels cold. Its made out of wood and painted fake carbon fiber.

    hi everybody,

I have an ENVY it is great, but I find that the touchpad is not very cool.
With my other pc's I used to move the mouse when having my fingers on the buttons, and this is impossible with the envy because the buttons are part from the touchpad and so if you have a finger on them you can't mouve the mouse...

Is there a solution to desactivate the region around the buttons in order to put my little fingers on them safely ? :)

    thanks

there is an updated driver from HP that fixes this and gives 'click and drag' functionality. you can find it here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-drivers-software-forum/426181-drivers-hp-envy-15-intel.html

you could also go directly to Synaptics website and install the generic driver (you may lose some HP specific functions)

edit : well in fact it did not solve my prob, the only way I found to solve it to completely uninstall Synaptics driver, but then I dont have the possibility to scroll with 2 fingers (which is a pain)
    Anyway thanks for your help

can you use Reil's touchpad software for 2 finger scrolling? or would that not work without the Synaptics driver?

I am already using "2fingerscroll" software to scroll (which is way better than HP scrolling function) , and it did not work without synaptics, so unfortunately I think Reil's one won't work too...
