Okay, so I can't find the answer to this. Is the 5830 overclockable? And if so, how well?

yes, it is overclockable. a few programs that work: AMD GPU Clock Tool, MSI Afterburner, Sapphire TRIXX

it depends - you wont know how much until you try it. i know mine can do at least +10% (550MHz) on the core and +12.5% (900MHz) on the memory. i havent tried higher. this resulted in +10% msi kombustor (furmark) score. thats all i tested it with.

on a side note: there's not much the 5830m cant handle at default clocks (within reason), so i dont even bother with overclocking anymore.

Been a long time lurker, but since I plan to add an SDD to my Envy15, I need your help.

I just swappend my 500GB stock Hitachi for a brand new 1TB Samsung, because I simply needed space. While doing so, I realized that the second (internal) sata connector is available, and that there is some space above the board in that section of the laptop. Since there are some SSD's which are simply small circuitboards with a chip on them, that perhaps fit in the empty space, I want to see if I can install one alongside my big, but slow 1TB.

I'll need a connector cable for the SSD though. I havn't been able to find anything on these cables, nor a place that sells the part. So my question is: where could I get this connector?

Another option is that I buy the 2.5" caddy+cable that one of you guys have laying around when you upgraded from a regular drive to 2xSSD. Let me know if you are willing to sell!

Anyhoo, your help will be much appreaciated! Second step would be to see if I can set the SSD as a cache (Readyboost or somesuch). Oh and for the guys looking to overclock their 5830: I use AMD GPU Clock Tool to push mine to a rock steady 600/1100. Higher gets crashy for demanding games, but some run fine on 650/1150.

Are you saying you have a 2.5" HDD but there is still space for an SSD?

Having delved a bit deepter into ebay, I have now found a part that seems similar to what I need: the HDD cable for HP's DV6/7/8 laptop. For example:
HP PAVILION DV7 HDD SATA Hard Drive Connector CABLE | eBay

What I could not find out is whether it actually is compatible with the Envy15. Has anyone here any insight on the matter?

    Hello all,

Not sure if anyone would be able to help me but this is my story. I have a first gen envy 15 and I have had it for the past year and a half or so. Recently I took out my HDD and when putting it back inside i messed up the track pad's connector cable. Now my track pad doesn't work so I have resorted to using usb mouse.

I was wondering if anyone knew where I would be able to just buy the track pad connector cable. HP was selling the whole track pad unit with connector cable for quite a bit of money.

    Thanks in advance!

Hey thanks for the reply. When I spoke to HP, they told me they did not have the item in stock anymore. So right now I have just been looking at other retailers.

Some store one quoted me the track pad + cable for $159. I unfortunately just need the cable and was hoping to get one for around 20-30 bucks :(...

Heya, ive got some biiig problems with my dear envy 15 1190 (the one with ati 5830 graphics)

The computer is abou 1 1/2 year old. I had problems with what I thought was my graphic card cause during gaming the
laptop would just shut down, sometime it happened in windows while not gaming but that was rarely.
I sent it in for repair and they changed the heatsink cause my graphics card was running hot, up to 95´ C
But the problem remained so I sent it back, and they changed the motherboard and it ran fine.

some months after that the computer would just shut down again, but very rarely. The crashed started more frequently
and this time with bluescreens. I also couldnt start the computer after a crash, there was just a black screen, but after some tries it went back online.

Now a few months after that, the bluescreens are very frequent, and starting the computer can take up to 10 tries :(
I have no idea where to start with this, the computer is out of its 1 year warrenty.
I can think of two possebilities:
    1. The graphic card was faulty, or took damage cause of high temps way back.
    2. I swapped the original HDD to a SSD (intel x-m25, also that 1 1/2 year old)
    Could that be the problem?
I recently reinstalled windows but to no help, I cant install the original windows from HP thou on the ssd (stupid HP)
And I lost the original HDD to swap back and try, not really up to buyin a new hdd just to try...

Im not very good with computer, or I dont have a very good understanding of them but can usually find my way around
    stuff anyway.
I know this is to little infomration to give a good anwer; but I would be happy if I could be pointed
in a direction to start figuring out what is wrong.

Here is a link to the bluescreen i get:

    @ callecal

i would suggest running Memtest86+ Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool to check your RAM first. i used to get a lot of BSODs with win32k.sys when i had a bad stick of RAM.

if it fails, try reseating your RAM (remove and reinstall) and rerun Memtest. if it fails again, remove all but one stick if RAM and rerun for each RAM stick to find which one is bad.

if it passes, you could try swapping the SSD with HDD (try finding a friend, coworker or relative with one...) or do a google search for win32k.sys and see what others have done to address it. i saw a lot of links pointing to nvidia driver issues (not relevant, as you have ATI), hardware incompatibilities, faulty RAM, and corrupted system files.

hopefully, that gives you a place to start.

    Hello all,

I have an HP Envy 15 and am looking to buy a new replacement 6 cell battery.

I called HP and they offered me approx $150 for a new battery, and approx $115 for a refurbished replacement battery.

Anyone know of any other sources for cheaper yet good replacement batteries?

    Thanks,

I got an aftermarket battery off ebay, not a good idea.
Ad claimed 52 Wh, marking said 48 Wh, BatteryBar said 39 Wh.
At full load it cannot leave enough current so computer just powers off, no warning.
capacity reporting also seems off, below 25 pct it just cuts off.

I suggest getting an OEM battery from an ebay seller in Asia.

    Hi everybody,

Quick question. My Envy 15 (2nd gen, 5830 i5) had some display artifacts a moment ago when I opened it up - what looked like green fuzz on part of the display. Definitely looks like a loose DVI cable rather than your typical 'bad card' artifacts, especially as it goes away when I move the laptop around a little bit. But just as the appearing can be temporary and temperamental, so too can the disappearing, I'm sure.

How much pain am I in for to open this baby up and look at the DVI connector? The machine is under warranty so I can call HP but I was hoping not to have to do that to spare myself the hour to convince them that yes, it's definitely the cable, no I don't want to reformat Windows, etc.

Thanks Larsv--I bought an OEM battery off ebay from a Hong Kong/China seller for $79 ($69 w new Bill Me Later account) . . . it is indeed an original battery and *much* cheaper than buying from HP--it has good performance!

    Hello all,

I have a first generation HP envy with Core I7 that the hard drive just got fried on.

I need to do a bare metal restore from a backup on Windows Home Server V1.

Has anyone tried to do this? Any tips/recommendations to drivers needed?

    Thanks

    Hello,

I am looking to upgrade my NX369AV Envy 15 memory and was looking for some advice. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the NX369AV has DDR3 1066. Currently I have 4 gigs and would like to go to at least 8. With that in mind how many gigs can I go up to and what speed (1333, 1600, 1866)?

Thanks for the advice ahead of time.

    Best regards,

    Chad

If you have one of the quad core models, the mobo has 4 DIMM slots and you can go up to 16GB (4x4GB). (i7-720QM or i7-820QM)

If you have one of the i5 models, you are limited to 2 DIMM slots and 8GB RAM (2x4GB).

Keep in mind at the time this product line was released, there were no 8GB RAM sticks on the market. Perhaps someone else can comment on whether they would be compatible, in which case you could go up to 16GB (2x8GB) with the i5 or 32GB (4x8GB) with the i7 models.

I've had 16GB in my laptop for a number of years and the only time I've ever noticed more than a couple GB of memory committed at a time is when working with extremely large outdoor advertising images in Photoshop, or rendering motion graphics on large video files.

8GB should be more than enough for most uses I can think of, unless you need to run vmware or similar apps.

As for any differences between 1333MHz, 1600MHz, etc., I imagine this is negligible. People used to go for these faster RAM sticks for their desktops in order to overclock the CPU before the Sandy Bridge desktop CPUs (like the i7-2600k) were released that use an entirely different means of overclocking that does not require faster RAM sticks. In any case, I'm not aware of anybody overclocking their Envy 15 CPU, so I doubt there would be any benefit at all.

the first gen i5 and i7 dual-core mobile processors support up to 1066MHz DDR3 RAM. the first gen i7 quad-core mobile processors support up to 1333MHz DDR3 RAM. any faster will get down-clocked to the maximum supported speed.

my gf knocked my old envy 15 off the side of the couch while it was closed and in sleep mode. now it's impossibly slow to use and has tons of error messages. Did the hard drive probably suffer damage during the fall?

It's possible, but less likely since I think sleep mode shuts down the hard drive, so the mechanical platters weren't in operation.

Only way to know for certain would be to try using a new primary drive.

There are lots of other parts that can be damaged in a fall, even when shut down. What are the error messages? (and how did you get the 5850m in your envy 15?)

I havent looked at the dmp files at this point. It's so annoying to replace the HDD in the old envys I was really hoping it to be something else or just the HDD so I could only have to undo those 1,249 screws it takes to get the HDD out one time instead of a handful.

you can try a fresh install of windows.

if that doesn't work, either your HDD or something else is faulty.

If there is some sort of short or problem with the mobo or cables I don't imagine it would be something you can figure out simply by eyeballing it. Maybe try replacing the HDD or replacing all your RAM. if it's a problem with anything else you may need to replace the entire motherboard.

Once after a water spill, none of the keys or touchpad were working and I was going to replace the entire keyboard and touchpad, but it turned out that I only needed to replace one small thin cable connecting the keyboard to the mobo.

I think it's either the ram or the HDD. I have a suggestion to test the HDD out, hook it up externally with other computer, run some tests on it (benchmarks, error checks, idk)

    Hey guys nice forum,

I've tried looking for answers tomy questions but cant find them. I live in Canada and can only buy the Envy 15 3090ca here. Is the 3040nr better and should I order it from the USA? What are the 3dMark results from both of them? Is one older than the other?

    Cheers guys!

I should also state the main difference between the 3040nr ad the
3090ca is the former has an i7 2670QM and the latter has a i5 2450M. Is there much difference between these two processors?

Your RAM was confirmed to be broken? In what way?

Maybe there is some kind of problem with your mobo that is frying your RAM?

    Hi!
I have a problem with my Envy 15-1050ca and Linux.
The open source driver for ati 4830 graphics work ok but when I install the proprietary driver (Catalyst) the notebook hangs up on the start.
I try different distributions and different Catalyst versions.

This is the AMD Linux Bugzilla link:

    Bug 203 – ATI 4830 - Hp Envy - fglrx

    Thanks

It actually ended up being the HDD. This was a good experience for me, this particular envy is not my main laptop so I played around with some linux distros, windows 8 consumer preview and played around with a couple things I hadn't previously. I'm not new to building computers, but had not ever played with linux outside of a virtual box.

Still need to replace the keyboard, the right arrow, delete home pg up pd down and end arent working.

Thank you for the advice and help.

sent from my Envy 15 triple booting Windows 7, Ubuntu, and Windows 8

There is something really weird with my envy 15 1190.
My ram memory gets corupted and the laptop crashes. When I buy new ram the laptop is fine for a while but then it breaks the ram memory and im back to scratch....i dont have any warranty. Any idea?
I really just wanna sell this one off as I have had so much trouble with it, but im afraid if I send it to repairs they gonna charge more to fix it then I can sell it for :(

4 slots I think, but only 2 were used when I got the laptop (4gig) and after that I installed 2 new (8 gig). Now I am just using 1 slot (4 gig)
