I thought the gFx card on the Envy 17 was more powerful than the gfx card on the 8740w.
-
-
that would be incorrect. 5850 vs 5870 (equivalent)
-
5850 is underclocked isn't it?
-
I'd like to know the same thing. Anyone know?
Because I can make disc images for free >.>

wondering how the batter life will be with 15cells. The msi gx640 gets what about 4hours Ive read..?

WASD are the de facto directional keys for gaming. If you've been using the arrow keys this whole time, it's time to learn how to play games the way most people have been playing on the computer for decades already
(I'm trying to think of how you gamed all this time using the arrow keys when all the supplemental keys for most games are usually in the left half of the keyboard, concentrated around the WASD layout. It's not like you'd use your right hand either as it's probably on the mouse already. I'm just dumbstruck.).
Also, excel is easily navigable using the Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Shift+Enter keys; one normally uses the mouse instead for making selections in longer sheets. Again, more common alternatives to the arrow keys that are actually more practical in usage than the arrow keys themselves.
Why are the shrunken up/down keys a big deal again? -
1. ATI installs a bunch of crap drivers and software and aren't stable.
2. Although true "wasd" works for FPS, but there are other games that use the arrow keys. -
For some reason I missed this post when I wrote my last one.
I'm not the only one who uses my computer (sadly).
I am a Computer System Technician and work a lot from home. The third party software we use is crap and uses the arrow keys to navigate with a lot of numbers to punch. (Which is why I'm going for the 17" for the keypad and back lit keys)
I used to game with my left hand using the arrow keys and right hand on the mouse back in the day.
hell, I even spent $260 CDN on a mouse and keyboard because it felt right and was Bluetooth (with charger).
The DV7 I have just isn't cutting it anymore. Battery died 2 days after the one year manufacture warranty (always has to be plugged in now), there are small pressure marks on the screen from the keys, not to mention the amount of finger prints on the silver casing. Mind you its still good for what I use it for (EvE Online and working).
/me is praying for a Envy 18....... lol

Do not dwell on the past buddy, Their drivers have improved a lot. Besides, they produce less hotter and power consuming cards which is imp for laptops.
-
HP hates you. lol
damn it. so I'm down to hoping the quality of the display delivers. I'm surprised they didn't release a few of these to the media for early review before model release.
seems like every week up to release, some hope is dashed. make this Envy 17 deliver, HP. -
Two more days left.

Set a countdown counter on your desktop

I set one on my Droid
HP, please don't disappoint! -
I will cry many sad tears if the base MSRP for the Envy 17 is is like i5 420, ATI 5600, 320gb with a 13xx by 7xx display ;_;
But realistically I don't see how they could sell anything better for 1299. I guess we'll see in a few days. -
base price is $1399 and that comes with:
Radeon 5850 and 1600 by 900 resolution and i5-430 processor -
Oh wow, I didnt realize that on the spec sheet it says that the full HD option has 300 nit brightness. I thought it was 200 nits for both. In that case the 1080p screen should be well above average.
-
I was wondering that myself so I e-mailed a reseller and they said, 'The HP recovery disks would recover the unit back to its factory state, so yes all the "bloatware" would be preloaded back on.'
-
Why not backup your activation and install an OEM install of windows 7 then restore the activation?
-
HP is now showing an Envy 17-1000 series at HP Envy 17-1000 Notebook PC series specifications - HP Home & Home Office products -- one thing I note is that neither the 1001TX nor the 1002TX have the FHD display -- both are limited to the 1600x900 HD+ Amazon still lists the Envy 17-1011nr but w/o any reference to dsiplay. I waited 4 months for Lenovo to get their FHD displays straightened out in their supply line but finally gave up -- now I'm wondering if HP is having a similar problem.
-
But then again.... I discovered that the HP.com pages I was looking at are apparently on their Australia website -- getting back to the USA website I see they're now showing an Envy 17t-1000 CTO model, but w/o any specifics yet.
-
Well... the Envy 17t is actually on the HP Singapore website. So the only answer is to wait for HP.com to formally "release" this product.
-
expect this to be what BestBuy sells if they carry the product. (note is for those in the thread that wanted to buy from BestBuy.)
-
From the Singapore site:
HP Envy 17-1008tx Notebook PC (WY371PA)
- i7-720QM
- 8 GB RAM
- 2 x 1TB HDD 5200 rpm
- Blu-Ray
- Full HD Display 1920x1080 HP "Ultra brightview infinitiy"
- ATI HD 5850 with 1 GB dedicated GDDR5
3699 S$ (incl. tax?) = 2600 US $ = 1900 Euro
Looks like the High-End Edition.
Singapore should now be after midnight and at 19th May.
So I suppose you can see the Envy 17 at your local HP site starting midnight local time. -
Perhaps, but I for one sure hope there isn't a $1200 premium over their claimed "entry" price.
-
HP lists the following Envy 17 models in a long list of Envy models going back to the original versions:
» HP Envy 17-1001tx Notebook PC
» HP Envy 17-1001xx Notebook PC
» HP Envy 17-1003xx Notebook PC
» HP Envy 17t-1000 CTO Notebook PC
This is on their USA site and, interestingly, there are no Envy 14 models listed yet.

so troublesome!!! the last time i tried formatting my mbp using a totally fresh install took FOREVER to get it to pretty much the state my laptop was in before it went all retarded on me.
might just use revo uninstaller instead. people say their laptops get noticeably faster with improved battery life from a squeaky clean install but i dont know. cant be so bad just uninstalling them. -
Just looking.... Anyone know what the difference in the models are?
-
probably come on nearer to the end of june? the 17 was up for a bit like a month ago but they took it down so i guess its back up again to prepare for tomorrow.
and im going to sound like a broken record on this but since 15-1200cto has been up for a while it should come out pretty soon right????!!! like tomorrow right?!?! ...righ? -
Why not?
Just compare the premium configuration with the smallest possible options in the maintance manual:
..... smallest ----> premium
CPU: i5-430M ------> i7-720qm
RAM: 2x 2GB -------> 2x 4GB
HDD: 1x 320 GB ----> 2x 1TB
Display: HD+ -------> Full HD
optical: DVD -------> blu-ray
Could the differences be worth a thousand bucks (without tax)?
(cpu could possibly be choosen even higher in the configurator) -
Envy 17-1001TX:
i5 540M
2 x 500 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive 7200 rpm
1600x900
Envy 17-1002TX:
i7 720QM
640 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive 5400 rpm
1600x900
from the site. -
Interesting.... care to provide the URL? The only one I have with specs that are listed in full is: HP Envy 17-1008tx Notebook PC (WY371PA) specifications - HP Home & Home Office products
-
oops, i switched around the harddrives. the 1001tx has the 640 and the 1002tx has the 2x500

He's basing it off the info from the link provided earlier:
HP Envy 17-1000 Notebook PC series specifications - HP Home & Home Office products
He mixed the HDD specs in his post though- the 2TX has the dual 500GB 7200rpm. It's lame that neither have blu-ray as base optical drive (IMO I'd rather sacrifice the extra 500GB HDD to compensate for the blu-ray upgrade).
-edit-
Haha, it looks like you replied before I did it for you
-
I note that these are all HP Australia models, though.
-
can't wait, can't wait....almost here (I hope!)

Not sure how many of you intend to use a laptop stand together with your Envy 17, but for those who will be, any recommendations for a laptop stand?
I have looked at a bunch, and I am not sure which one would be appropriate as I am not sure about the opening angle for the screen, plus I am not sure which stands would not block the speaker ports on the front lip. -
1 day to go, cant wait to see the pricing
-
Telling from the range on my Envy 15, it doesn't swing back too much- I'd say 110 degrees at most? It's not much, but I would guess the new 14 and 17 would tilt back at least that much. Also, the 17 doesn't have the audio ports in the front, so no need to worry about blockage.
I'm also looking into a decent notebook stand that could accommodate a 17" w/ respectable mouse and forearm spacing. If anyone has any suggestions, then please let us know. -
Actually, according to the Service Guide for the Envy 17, the two openings in the front are for speakers.
-
The Envy 17 has 2 speakers on the front......so, any laptop stands that have any kind of curved edges or Tabs to hold the front edge of the laptop has to clear the 2 speakers infront for audio blockage not to occur.
I know that the Rain designed laptop stands for the Macbooks will not block the speakers, but at the same time, the stand only holds laptops up to 10.4 inches in depth. The Envy 17 is 10.8 inches in depth so it will not be able to use this stand.

@PhatCat & mobilezila
"speaker/audio ports" when referring to computer parts are the jack inputs, and not the actual speaker component itself; I knew the speakers are in the front, and "speakers" are just called "speakers" (even the manual says this). Either the original poster thought the ports were in the front, or he made a wrong choice in wording. It's easy for someone who's familar with HP/Toshiba notebook designs to assume that the ports on the ENVY lines would also be located in the front (since that has been the design trend for notebooks lately). Honestly, having any kind of ports located in the front of the notebook is a bad design in many ways, but that's another topic in and of itself...
Anyway, thanks for the link to the stand. It seems to lift the notebook too high, but it appears the stand was designed purposely for external keyboard users. I'll pass on this one. -
Sure look like speaker ports to me. BTW, the audio jacks are on the side.
-
hmm...looking at that picture, I wonder why they didn't position the touchpad perfectly underneath the keyboard's space button?
I've found that when it's not, palms tend to touch accidentally register as mouse button presses. this can be particularly annoying when writing documents in say...Word. typing in one area and all of a sudden, you accidentally touch the touchpad with a palm without realizing it, and next thing you know, you're typing 8 lines above where you thought you were.
I was trying to help a family member with this kind of issue with their HP computer when we realized it was the touchpad's placement that was causing the problem.
maybe these newer touchpads don't have that issue, though? -
that white point on the top left corner of the touchpad can be double tapped to disable the pad while typing. As can the rest of the lineup. And currently, the entire pavilion lineup allows you to disable the pad with a button press.
-
Alright well I've been lurking this thread everyday since it's creation, and since the laptop is finally going to come out tomorrow, I figured it might be a good time to actually register.
I'm very excited for this laptop, and I really do hope they have then at Best Buy. I don't hope this so I can buy it there, but so that I can see it in person and just make sure the keyboard and design are all to my liking. -
Maybe they're copying my MBP 17, which also has the trackpad slightly to the right of center of the spacebar.
FWIW, I haven't found that to be a problem.
-
Welcome to the ranks of the waiting...
-
Already on sale in Australia. Hehehe
-
Lucky Aussies. But what's the deal? Are they not custom configurable? Only high end and low end?
I was kind hoping for a i5 (or a i7-dual core) with a full HD screen. -
I'm in Australia and just ordered one!
Just one question, are the hdds 2.5'? I want to take one out and put it into an external enclosure so I can carry it around.
