Just as another reference for the inflated prices, the HP Online Store in Australia is only selling the older i7-720QM/HD 4830 Envy 15, and for AU$2,799. Pretty much all Australian laptop prices are inflated in a similar manner, but the Envy seems like one of the worst.
Another thing to keep in mind is that all Australian prices have 10% GST already included, unlike U.S. prices where tax is applied on top of the listed price.
My bet is that the Envy 17's starting price in the U.S. will be $1600, assuming HP offers a Core i5 starting configuration.

I do get a couple boot camp errors and one "issue". The main issue is there is no switching support on the bootcamp nvidia driver. No Apple switching and no optimus.
I've also noticed an odd error that every now and again my comp will boot up with sound muted. Also, I think the Nvidia driver is not quite "perfect" generally. Very rarely--like once in blue moon, I'll get a driver error. It corrects, but it shouln't be happening. -
this thing will be pretty cool, but as of right now I'm more interested in the 14, and a refresh of the 15. The option for an integrated odd would be great, backlit keyboards and switchable graphics woul also be amazing.
-
If you want small--get 13. Medium 15..large 17. I don't get what the 1 inch gets you in terms of satisfaction. -
First of all, it's less about the screen size and more about the possible features that could be offered in the Envy 14, especially switchable graphics with a good card.
Secondly, who are you to decide that 13.3", 15.6", and 17.3" are the best sizes? -
-
First of all, then you should have said that you wanted a refresh, not that you in fact prefer the 1 inch difference in screen size.
Second. I never said I decided it. Reread what I wrote. I said I didn't understand why people cared about 14 inches vs 13. It seems pointless to me, and your post did zero to explain it. In fact you admitted it had to do with the desire for 13 inch refresh rather than the screen size which proved my point. -
Marshman, any estimate of battery life for your MBP17 running Win7? I am thinking the Envy15/17 i5 with two 6/8-cell regular (thin and light) batteries might give longer life than the MCP on Win7.
TIA, Jason -

Have you guys seen this? No tech specs yet, but clearly something is coming soon.

It does tell you the graphics card and also tell you that the screen can be upgraded to full HD which means 1920 x 1080. YUK
On the plus side, the extra .3 inches on the screen is not too shabby. -

$2695 for above spec. is a little bit overpriced isn't it??
-
it'll be about 10% above envy 15 prices. -
If the picture are real, it is a Edge to Edge screen! That's something good!
-
As I look closer at the link I posted, it mentions a backlit keyboard and three external montors.
-
I couldn't tell if it was edge to edge...BUT
BACKLIT KEYBOARD
that will make many happy.
Only downside I see--
1080P instead of 1200
no graphics switching.
But so far--looks good. -
guess whether dual hard disk option exist...?
hopefully 2*2.5" ... -

Optical Drive - SuperMulti 8X DVD±R⁄RW with Double Layer Support

if they refresh the 15 with those specs, obviously different gpu, plus switching, I finally found my laptop
-
Interesting that is up on the Aussie HP site but not in the US -
Except Google shows that page to have been updated over 20 hrs ago, so it is probably just the Au branch of HP jumping the gun by a few days.

Oops, was already linked. 5850 GPU. I hope the form factor will be the same, slim but can add on additional battery.
Interesting.. Sending back my Envy 15. I talked to the US rep. She told me that she did not have a timeline of when they will release the Envy 17. But from the buzz and directions, they will release it shortly. -
-
If i can get a laptop with 1080p numberpad 4 ram slots and 2x 2.5in HDD Ithink i will be happy and I will also need to sell some laptops i have now....
-
Upon release of the Envy 17, I expect that HP will hold back on coupons and BCB for a while. I could be wrong; let's hope I am. After having my Envy 15 shipment delayed, I cancelled last night (my cancellation request is pending) and will wait for the next discount that is Envy 17 applicable.

I just ordered a mini 210 with the 25% cash back bing was offering i am sure that will be gone fore a while with somethign like the envy 17 which should be anything but cheap

I was thinking more in terms of the $400 off the Dv8 currently offered. Folks will now have a smaller and lighter alternative to get full 1080p on a large screen in the HP consumer line. I get the impression that the Dv8 isn't selling in large numbers and the release of the Envy 17 may be the end of the line (pun intended). -
they took the aussie stuff down i think
-
yea, it's not there anymore.
-
-
lame.
I didn't get to see.
Specs have me excited. All I can do is hope it's as good in real life as it is on paper.
If this is good enough and I can get a nice coupon, I can use the difference remaining in my "computer" budget on a sweet SSD and an iPad or something.
But I'm gonna have to feel good about that display (which I assume won't have a matte option) and the computers longevity (temperature). -
They had an image of it up on the site, it was not that big of a deal. looked like a 15 inch to me but someone else noted some things from it.
it's not RGB LED-- i figured you would be dissapointed by that. also the resolution is 1080P not 1920x1200. BUT the screen is 17.3
-
hmm.
well...I'll look forward to reviews of the display. specifically when compared to the MBP's screen.
Does HP have a restocking fee for returns? If not, I might buy it and take it to an Apple Store for direct comparison and photos. -

excellent.

I spoke with a sales rep at HP Australia. They have only two models available now, no custom orders. Any orders placed today are shipped within 10-14 days. According to this rep there is no backlit keyboard on the Envy 17 and no changes to the 13" or 15" model yet. Also they have no information regarding the Envy 14.
Here is the number for HP Australia: +61-13-0030-5017

I was assured by a sales rep at Fry's that the all of the off the shelf Envy 15's have 4 DIMMs and are upgradable to 16GB, so it seems strange that the Envy 17s would only have 2 DIMMs. One of these two must be incorrect. Also if they have 6GB it would seem they are using 3x2GB, so they should have at least 3 slots.
Edit: A second HP Australia rep confirmed both models above have a backlit keyboard, but no backlit keyboard available on Envy 15 yet.
Edit: 41.6cm x 27.5cm 3.1cm (16.4 in x 10.8 in x 1.2 in) 3.44kg/7.58 lbs -
wait wait wait.
the Quad core only has 2 memory slots?
wut?
$3,000+ with a 1600x900 resolution screen?
wut?
$3,00+ doesn't get you blu-ray?
wut?
3-4 hours (translated 2-2.5 hours)?
wut? -
You have to remember even though he converted it to USD its still gonna be expensive because everything over there is expensive, especially electronics.
you sure its not just those specific off the shelf variants that dont have backlit keys? I mean it said backlit keys on the hp website. -

I asked her several times and she went and checked with her supervisor and then told me there is absolutely no backlit keyboard. I still think she may be wrong about this detail and the number of DIMMs.
Although, interesting to note that all those Envy 17 product pages have now been deleted from the HP server. -
The thing about it is it wasnt just some random spec, it was in a paragraph about the specific features of the model. So it couldnt have been just some copy past accident, could it?
