I spoke with another rep and he confirms that there are only 2 DIMM slots in these models 1x2GB and 1x4GB 1333mHz DDR3
The dimensions are 41.6cm x 27.5cm 3.1cm
(16.4 in x 10.8 in x 1.2 in)
2nd rep had some conflicting information about backlit keyboard. He asked around again and this time he was told by his supervisor that it does come with backlit keyboard, but no backlit keyboard available on the Envy 15 yet.
no slice battery available with either Envy 17 model until next month.
This rep tried to suggest that the 6-cell battery will last 8 hours (the previous rep said it would last 3-4 hours).

ROTFLMAO!!

your rep is on crack

With a more powerful graphics card than the Envy 15 and that 17.6 inch display I would estimate the battery life to be around 1 hour. I only get 60-90 minutes with the Envy 15 unless I dial the brightness down and switch to low performance settings. I imagine using the backlit keyboard would reduce the battery life even further.
-
heh. Be fair ... they did say it would be a bigger battery in the 17". I don't think HP is completely stupid.
I'm sure your system is a hog with 4 ram sticks, and the 45nm quad core... -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Yep the battery is probably bigger in size but still only 6-cells
-
ha ha. Well, it's possible. I'm sure the Envy would run for 8 hours on 6 cells of car batteries.
really, to be fair, '6 cells' is not enough to quantify battery capacity. A single li-on cell can be quite large actually. -
very surprising. I thought almost all quad-based systems could do 16GB, max?
nice.
looking forward to official confrimation. HP mine as well lift the veil tomorrow.
the 6-cell battery won't get 8 hours. even understanding that 6 cells doesn't quantify battery size...there's only so much space to work with. we all know better than thta. not in your life or mine unless there's an integrated GPU they're not telling anyone about. maybe the 6-cell + slice. -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
Oh yes, I imagine that theoretically when someone invents 8GB DDR3 the processor on your expensive Envy 17 will be able to handle it if you upgrade those two slots.
-
erm, I don't think so. I believe the Envy 15 i7 is fairly unique. in fact I think intel doesn't list 4 dimm slot specs as supported for the chipset even. The only other system I can think is the W700 maybe (the massive Lenovo 17" system)
-
3-4 hours...hmm, not bad, especially for a 17 inch laptop with only dedicated graphics. Backlit keyboard, nice, not necessary, but nice. Add integrated graphics and you have a MBP 17 killer. Still wondering how HP managed to get the 5850 DDR5 and an optical drive. But then again the cooling was superb on the Envy 15 so I expect the same in the 17. Solid laptop HP, kudos. Pricing should be pretty fantastic too. I might consider this IF it weighs 6.5 lbs or under. But that is highly unlikely.
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
keep dreaming ;-)
unfortunately, the weight of both models is 3.44kg/7.58 lbs -
8lbs. how much do you guys think the slice will weight? 2lbs?
interesting. and as L3vi said...with an Optimus setup, this is a MBP killer. -
me too! my 2.33ghz mbp is still running like a champ but its soo outdated. i think some netbooks perform on the same level.
-
we'll see, I'm definitely remaining optimistic.
-
Hmm, well that's not that bad considering the weight of other 17 inch laptops. It's still a full pound heavier than the Macbook Pro 17 though. I wonder why the 17 inch is heavier than the MBP 17 but the Envy 15 is lighter than the MBP 15.
-
odd, maybe?
-
This just became my new favorite thread.
-
sup, dave. fancy seeing you here too. lol
-
Yea I was waiting for him to show up, lol.
-
must be because the envy drops the dvd drive.
maybe that's with a big power slice or something. that's too heavy yo.
i am now feeling better about my mbp purchase...at least until i see specs.
1 extra pound is a generation behind! -
1 extra pound with a graphics card that's twice as powerful, USB 3, and HDMI. I think I would take that extra pound
-
usb 3 shouldn't weigh more dude.
and it's a 5850....that shouldn't be the weight either. something else must be goin on.
it is a tad bigger....3 inches diagonal but...meh. -
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
I bet the 17 inch slice will make a great frisbee. -
I don't. I have a slice on my 13" (or is it 12?) tablet elitebook.
it'd kill somone if I threw it and it hit them in the head. lol -
I didn't mean it literally, what I meant was that your adding one more pound but you get a superior graphics card, USB 3 and an HDMI port. I wasn't implying that those things made up the extra pound, lol
-
Just spoke to HP Business representative in the UK and while once again they were telling what I didnt want to hear they were at least knowledgeable telling me that HP Envy 17 will not be offered in the UK and that the entire Envy line was being withdrawn due to unfavourable sales and response to it. Ah well MBP it is unless anybody can save the day ?
-
duh so do what i'm going to do - order it through hid evolution. success! there might be import taxes though but i think you can ask them if there's a way to reduce them.
-
I know what you mean, that thing has some heft to it. I lifted up the envy 13 with it attached at best buy and was surprised how dense that battery is, but it give lots of extra power so there it is.
-
Are you UK based and can I specify a UK keyboard layout this way please ??
-
I study in the UK so I'm planning on getting the Envy this way. I don't think you can get the UK keyboard layout though, but there's no harm in asking? Now that you mention it I'll probably miss the £ sign
The position of the @ sign never really bothered me.. My 3 year old MBP is weird that way - bought in London and the @ sign is above the 2; but I wouldn't say that switching back to a normal keyboard short-circuited my brain
HID Evolution is just a reseller so they'd have all the customisation options that the original brand has e.g. you can build a Macbook from the Apple website and HID Evolution will give you a quote, or in the Envy's case you can customise it on their own website but it's the same as what the US HP website offers and it's slightly cheaper as well. Postage is pretty expensive, though - when I checked it was $95 to London.
-
Thanks for your time.
-
s'alright, hope it helps
i was thinking about getting another mac instead but the graphics card was kind of underwhelming and the envy's a better deal. here's hoping the 15 gets refreshed with switchable graphics when the 17 comes out!
-
I'm a celebrity around here now!
I'm actually still more interested in the 15" Envy than the New 17" though to be honest. I want more portability, and an 8lb notebook, regardless of how thin, is not exactly desirable.
I'd be willing to bet that the battery life will be substantially better on the 17" however, due to battery size (or is it still a 6cell?), so a slice might not even be an option.
From the looks of it, while the 5850 is a boost over the 5830 in the 2nd Gen Envy 15, I think the 15 is still a better bang for its buck (with a coupon too?) based on specs. -
Any mention of a 14in? >.> or 13 refresh?
-
Where is that may 4th release date rumor coming from? How reliable is that info?
-
When I got back to my office today, I discovered that I still had the HP Envy 17 page open from when I first found it via Google (b4 engadget
). Here is an edited screen scrape for those who didn't see it b4 HP took it down.

I've looked closely at the disclaimer at the bottom of the Envy 17 page cited by engadget as the bsais for their speculation that the Envy 17 will probably not have a built-in DVD drive. The wording of the footnote is identical to that for the 8740w, which does offer a built-in DVD. The fact that the DVD drive is optional would account for the disclaimer.
Bottom line, we shouldn't read anything into that particular disclaimer. Lazy journalism by engadget. -
Is there any news on refreshing the 15 incher?
-
Doubtful... Didn't it just get refreshed in January?
-
Yes it would be nice though that it get refreshed with the upgraded design, backlit keyboard, better battery life.
-
Yes, but the original came out in October. Three months from launch, and it got refreshed, so who's to say they won't do it again?
-
moviemarketing Milk Drinker
It definitely has a built in optical drive. You can actually purchase today one of the two quickship models by phone directly from HP Australia, Envy 17-1001tx or Envy 17-1002tx. Both have built in optical drive and backlit keyboard -
Nice to know. Now I just hope they offer that with an SSD.
-
man. what is HP waiting for? sufficient stock? surely they could announce the computer then announce the order date? even take pre-orders?
-
Well it actually should get refreshed(atleast hardware wise) because on the HP support site they have the Envy 15-1200cto notebook which has a driver for the mobility radeon 5730 as well as the 5830. It be nice for a backlit keyboard and hopefully better battery life. I hope I can exchange mine because there is a defect in the magnesium alloy cover behind the screen.
-
Hmm...if they happen to include all of that, I hope they announce them soon, while I'm still under my 21-day return period.
-
yep. would be nice to see...
I think in the next 10 days.
i wonder if you can call and order in the US like our australian brothers -
StealthReventon Notebook Evangelist
Do you guys think they'll offer a slice battery? With that and switchable graphics, 620m, SSD, 80% brightness, do you think it might manage 7 hours battery life?
-
I wouldn't be surprised if they updated them, however I don't think we'll see a backlit keyboard. Also, with what is inside the computer and the size of it already, you aren't going to get much more battery life out of it anyways. Maybe another 30 minutes, MAYBE. Batteries can only hold so much, especially with a dedicated GPU always on.
