That price is just speculation, as is most everything else at this point. The only reasonably reliable numbers were some early configs posted on HP's Au site, but even those must be taken with a grain of salt since the Envy is marked up big time down under and there is also a national tax there.

Adding my own uninformed speculation to the pot, I would agree with you that apples-to-apples, the Envy 17 should only be a few hundred more than the 15. The rub is that the models of the 17 available at initial release may not be base models and they may also have incomparable specs due to new/different HW.

I wouldn't expect deep discounts on the 17 until at least a month or two after the release. Why do that when there are plenty of us early adopters who will pay full price?

I guarantee that productwiki got most of it's info from this thread. I highly doubt anything in there is from a hard source at all.

No this is the actual sales price. HP Australia has already been selling these two quick-ship models at least since April 21. Whether they have delivered within "10-14 days" as promised or whether there have been shipping delays for australian customers remains to be seen.

I have heard that the pricing for all the Envy models is a bit higher in Australia, perhaps that explains the high price point.

If you do the actual comparison, the prices in Australia are significantly marked up from the US equivalents. I'm not aware that any US price was ever posted by HP.

I would guess it will be 10% more than the 1299 base for the envy 15 --for the envy 17. SO like 1499 or something.

Another way to guess the price is to take the % dif in AUS for the 15 vs 17 and apply it to current US envy 15 prices.

Thanks~!!!, but is the 5850 come with GDDR5 or just DDR3 ? if DDR3 it won't be much better than 5830, which is really pointless for 17', but 5850 with GDDR5 is close to a GTX280m.

the 330m on the MBP is abig failure I think, no DX11 and even less powerful compared to 4650.

HP ENVY 14 and 17 confirmed. They both have slot loading optical drives standard (which isn't so bad, but I'd do without it completely) and back lit keyboards.

Says both come with the ati 5830 (5850 for the 17 inch), which makes me very interested in the 14 inch. It doesn't say whether it's lighter than the 15 inch or if it has edge-to-edge either.

I got two 2nd gen envys, both returned , and the build quality are exactly the same as described in the review, and even worse.
My first envy has a big bump on the keyborad, and missing a rubber on the side of the screen, it even got a scratch after I first time pull out of the box.
My second envy has a creaking palm rest, you can press anywhere on the palm rest and you will hear the creaking sound.
Dont even menthion the heat, when I was play crysis on it, it was like about to explode.
The performance of the ati 5830 is good but not as good as what I expceted. And the 3dmark 06 on both exactly same spec envy are different, around 7900 vs around 8000.
Although, there are other people don't have these problems, I have to say they are lucky, I am not as lucky as those guys so I rather throw my money on an Alienware or MBP than this "premium" envy.

Unfortunately, the reviews of Envy 17 build quality may take longer to discern than i have time or patience to wait for. Too many posts with concerns about the line of Envy products (Gen 1 and Gen 2) to not feel forced to put such a purchase off another 2 or 3 months until we figure out what we really have in the Envy 17.

looks like I'm going with the 17" MacBook Pro. known quantity. not the best GPU, but it overclocks well on the MBP.

Man, believe me I did the same thing, I spent few weeks read tons of review just like you, and a lot of the reviews are negative. Though I still went for envy. I've been keep looking for a light weight and powerful notebook that I can play game with, envy was my last hope too, and after I returned my second envy last week, my hope blew off: There is NO such a laptop, I am going with Alienware, although they are not slim, not sexy and heavy, at least it worth the price you pay for.

don't know why people are excited the 14 has a basic gpu, nothing special, and the 17 is heavy. What a joke. If the 14 had a better gpu and edge to edge I would jump but backlite keyboards are overated.

The 14 has a midrange GPU, the 5650, which I'm guessing is the best you can get in a 14 inch laptop.

sorry the previous link for the youtube video doesn't work anymore, maybe HP blocked it?
but check out this: HP expands Envy laptop line with 14- and 17-inch models, plus new Pavilions | Crave - CNET
I seems that HP does concerned about the negative costomer reveiws, I am pretty sure both 14 and 17 are edge-to-edge, and both of them have built-in cd-rom and backlit keyboard, the extra function key on the left most column of envy 15 is gone... And seems they made an improvement on the touchpad, by separating the button from the pad.
Maybe I should give another shot? Athough envy 15 does disappointed me.

Great! C-net said the E14 system "supports switchable graphics".

Does anyone know if you'll be able to configure without the horrid optical drive? :D

It'd be interesting to see if they do a refresh of the envy 15 to unify the line. The 17 is just a bit too heavy and the 14 has a poor resolution screen. If the 15 got retooled to add usb 3.0 and an optical drive it would be much more appealing

See the ENVY15 is perfect except:
Bezel is HORRENDOUS - it's somewhat loose, it scratches ridiculously easily
Left column of keys is annoying and useless, and gets me killed in games
    Keys don't light up
    No internal optical drive
All USB ports are on the right side, which is bad for a right-handed person like me

ENVY17 fixes all these problems, and adds in a better gfx card and switchable graphics? Sign me up.

^ I don't see anything indicating the Envy 17 has switchable graphics.
so the Envy 14 supports switchable graphics, but the Envy 17 does not?

When I was a child in middle school I used to lug around about 30 pounds of books in my back pack, walking home well over a mile distance.

a 17" is not meant to be light, and it is considerably more powerful and thin than most.

If you prefer lighter the 15 serves just fine.

Yeah I think so, they said explictly envy 14 gonna have switchable graphics and up to 7 hrs with original battery.
actually I might consider about envy 14, ati 5650 is upper-middle class, better than the gt335m on M11x, M11x is gonna have a big rival.
