what i think is that this refresh of ENVY is just really perfect, only one thing is that if the Rom is optional then i will rather not having it for less weight.

I'd get rid of it ASAP. And then wait for reviews of the Envy 14, as well as more information on the forthcoming Envy 15t-1200 CTO that has been spotted in various documentation on the internet.

There is a model that has been spotted in various documentation called the Envy 15t-1200 CTO. This is not yet available, and we dont know anything about its specs for sure yet.

Im waiting for a review of the Envy 14 *and* the specs of this newer Envy 15 to be revealed before i make my purchase.

oh yeah i forgot about that. but a quick check reveals theyve removed the drivers for the 17 but havent for the 1200 cto.. so hopefully that means itll come out soon-ish?? but if so why didnt they just announce it with the 17 and 14??? or maybe it'll be a quiet upgrade like the last refresh. aagh all this speculation and waiting is making me a little skittish. im sooo tempted to just jump on the current envy 15.

I'd say the opposite. My guess is the 15" model won't be around too much longer and then you'll have to choose from the 14" with a ATi 5650 or the big 17". If you don't need switchable graphics or a DVD drive then the 15" still wins on screen size/resolution and GPU power, for the same weight as the 14" model.

Personally, i doubt that they will get rid of the 15" since it is the sweet spot that targets the widest range of people because it better balances power and portability. Apple puts most of their effort into the 15" MBP for this reason.

If HP upgrades the Envy 15 with switchable graphics, backlit keyboard, and the Radiance display, it will take the crown from the MBP 15". I'd also like for them to keep the dual disk drive (no optical), and figure out a way to get the 5830 (or better) in a switchable configuration (doubtful on this one).

a half pounds off that envy 17 and switchable graphics and that's a perfect machine. 7 pounds...after that it gets awfully heavy.
1920 x 1080 is lame....but the .3 screen size helps a little I guess. It would have been better if they had let you do 1920 x 1200. unfortunate.

oh! ah! haha. just watched a youtube video on the envy 14 and they say that they added the backlit keyboard to the envy 15 at 'customer request.' at least that's another confirmation they're upgrading the 15. releasing it between the 17 and 14 maybe? hope they release on the 19th of may as well.

Just called the HP number to "reserve my envy 17." Turns out all they do is put your name on a list to notify when it is released. The rep did say that the "3D screen" on their site is not a typo but he is under strict orders not to disclose anything until offical release. So, who's got a contact in HP that will speak off the record?

I think that he misspoke. I think that he meant to say that the backlit keyboard was added to the Envy 14 & 17 at customer request. (Tho, i hope that was actually an unintentional leak on the Envy 15t-1200 CTO)

though it wouldn't make sense for them to release updates of all their notebooks, and yet not release information on the envy 15 if there was an update.

actually, I think it's the MacBook Pro 15" that has the biggest rival now.

too bad the Envy 17 won't have switchable graphics too.

that's a huge missed opportunity, IMO.

switchable graphics might have been a neat concept but in practice, too costly in terms of hardware implementation and too complex in terms of software support.

Going forward, I don't think that you'll see much press on switchable graphics and the tech will die out beyond what is being released this year.

The 14 doesn't have a "sub par gpu" if "par" is a Macbook Pro. It actually has a very above par gpu compared to a MBP.

And 17 is too heavy? It's lighter than a dellienware M15x.

We get that you don't like them. Now please leave the rest of us idiots in peace so that we can discuss them. And try to withhold your contempt when we ignorantly buy them and report on their disgusting features and ridiculous performance..

BTW, my household has both a MBP 15 and 17, had and returned an Envy 15, recently purchased a Dv8t and I've already signed up to buy the Envy 17 when it comes out. To save you the effort: stupid me.

And holy crap!! 2 TB of storage on the 17!! That's got to be the biggest possible for any consumer grade laptop. That's insane.

They put a OD in the 14 inch. Not bad, but it does bring up the weight a bit. Not too much of a problem. I'm now very attracted to the 17 inch.

And the prices, wow. If they can keep the problems down with these new ones, these laptops are an absolute steal.

HP is definitely here to play and stay on top as the world's number one notebook distributor.

um...you are aware that there are 1TB laptop HDDs on the market, right? And that the Envy 17 has 2 HDD bays, as do many other laptops?

Just put one in each HDD bay and voilia: 2TB of storage.

The opposite is true in my opinion.
So much more power is in that GPU if you can scale it off or down, it saves a ton of heat and battery life. Saving laps, and saving battery lifes.

I think your view is materially unlikely to be true, and unrealistic. Switchable graphics is an increasing trend, not a decreasing one and I'm surprised they would do it in the 14 but not for the 17

Dude, seriously? Are you not aware that all of the 1TB models are to thick to be put in a standard laptop? The new Envy and Pavilion models are the only laptops that can carry them - huge advantage.

...Are you aware the 1tb drive is not considered a laptop unit? The beloved MBP cannot fit one of those drives, let alone two.

To echo what everyone else said, 12.5mm height 2.5" drives are meant for servers, not laptops. It's like a WD Raptor, it's technically a 2.5" drive, but you can't put it in a laptop for various reasons (power being chief among them).

considering none of HP's pressers mentioned it for the 17, but did on the 14, I'd say that's pretty definitive. it's a big deal. they would have mentioned it. and the fact that they mentioned it for the 14 makes it totally clear.

wow, what a load of bull! you just made that up! .

several laptops in the $800-$1400 range come with or are about to launch with switchable graphics.

even in this very discussion, the small Envy 14 (starting below $1000) has switchable graphics. so where do you come off saying it'd be too expensive to implement for the 17?

    stop spewing misinformation.

oh? because my past Vaio could fit them with no problem.

it came with dual 500GB 12.5mm drives last year. maybe it was just special. I'm aware most laptops come with capacity for only 9.5mm, so I assumed this laptop could simply fit the 12.5's as well since 1TB HDDs are only currently available in the 12.5mm size, as far as I can tell.

(after all, HP doesn't make the HDDs...they just buy them like everyone else. they don't have special HDDs available only to them. think, people.)

What I'm really excited about is the 3D display. I think this means a 120Hz display that can polarize every other frame. I think only one other laptop has a 3D display, the Aspire 5738DG.

^ I'm sure we'll find out more very soon.
the 18.4" AW *was* a thin laptop.

so again, the question on the floor is why are we so confident the 1TB HDDs in the Envy line are 9.5mm HDDs and not 12.5mm HDDs?

my point was that 12.5mm HDDs have been done in laptops before...and so far as I can tell, the only manufacturers making 1TB laptop-size hard drives are making them in the 12.5mm variety.

considering HP isn't getting hardware that isn't already known in the market...it seems most likely that the 1TB HDDs HP is using are indeed 12.5mm drives. no?

or was there a 9.5mm announcement recently?

    It's almost certainly 12.5mm HDDs.

Unless HP is clever and has a mobo with controllers for 4 SATA 1.8" HDDs and someone released a 500gb 1.8" hdd.

I doubt the envy 15 will have 4 dimm slots. The number of dimm slots is probably one of the differentiators between the business line (8540w and 8740w) and the consumer line
