I thought I read-on here somewhere-that Montevina was delayed. Don't remember how long, but the chipset was coming first, the platform(s) a month or so later? Sorry if this is bum info...my memory ain't what it used to be.
-
-
You recalled it correctly. Montevina (which is the platform/chipset + new CPUs) will be delayed until about July 15th. The non-integrated graphics version may be released at the end of the month if Intel can clear up their Wifi documentation with the FCC. -
hello everyone i was wondering though it may have been asked is there a laptop cooler for the hdx i found zalmens but thats about the only one it only has two fans and i was looking for one or 2 big ones or 3 or 4 small ones anything would be appreciated
-
Chicago (CA) – Sources close to Intel have confirmed to TG Daily earlier reports that Intel’s Montevina notebook platform, referred to as Centrino 2, will see a substantial delay. Montevina will not make it to Computex next week and will miss its originally planned debut date later in June. Intel has decided to delay Centrino 2, providing AMD with an opportunity to pitch its Puma platform and Turion Ultra processor.
Intel’s engineering and manufacturing engine has been running flawlessly over the past two years, taking away AMD’s room to breathe. But, of course, mistakes are bound to happen at some point and Intel is now being confronted with an issue serious enough to officially delay the launch of Centrino 2. Our sources confirmed that information provided by American Technology Research analyst Doug Freedman is accurate, claiming that the company had a “mis-step in the completion of FCC certification” for the next-generation Centrino processor with support for the 802.11n Wi-Fi standard. Freedman said that 802.11n support may see a slower ramp as Montevina can only be shipped with support 802.11 a/b/g for now.
Freedman also noted that Intel faces problems with its integrated graphics chipset, which is causing failures in OEM notebooks. “We believe the potential impact is to lower-end systems as higher-end notebooks are designed with discrete graphics cards. In fact, the impact on [Intel] is a possible improvement in mix within the chipset business; however, it is offset by the yield loss related to the functional issues.”
Our sources at Intel told us that Centrino 2 is now scheduled for a July 14 launch with “some chipsets”. A “couple of weeks later” the company will be shipping the full line of chipsets, as the company needs “a few extra days” for tasks such as antenna testing.
Of course, that delay brings up the question of the state of the Echo Peak WiMax chipset. As we hear, this current problem is completely separate from the company’s WiMax efforts. And realistically, as long as there is no solid foundation for a WiMax network in the U.S., it wouldn’t make sense for Intel shipping a WiMax chipset anyway.
However, it will be interesting to see whether AMD will be able to take advantage of this situation and whether Intel’s delay will be significant enough to allow AMD to capture a greater share of the H2 business. Puma, we heard, is ready to be rolled out and will aim mainly for the entry-level and mainstream segment of the market. It remains to be seen how Intel will be impacted, but there is no denying that the company needs its mobile platform to deliver: The mobile business brings in more than 40% of Intel’s profits (57% if we count in the money-losing businesses such as flash). -
Hey guys, had any of you ever had a problem with the quick touch interface? Here it works fine but the volume and bass/treeble slider give me problems (or maybe I haven't figured out how they work...?) in fact sometimes the on screen OSD doesn't show up, sometimes it does.
Also when I am inside a program or a game if I dare touch those buttons the OSD tries to appear and seems in conflict with anything, it starts stuttering (sort of blinking in an weird unresponsive way) and it tends to slow down the whole system until it has finally received whatever input I gave it (a quick fix seems to be clicking on it with the mouse and press enter a few times like if it were a window that needed to be brought in the foreground and then closed)...
Still it's weird, maybe I shouldn't consider it a real OSD, but more like a normal windows that tries to appear onthe desktop while in fact I am (sometimes) running a full screen game. But it does have a weird behaviour.
I tried to install the update but nothing really changed, until yesterday when Vista auto installed some update and since that the number one sound option in the control panel selects no sound... not a dramatic problem, since the other two are still there but I am just wondering if someone figured out a fix or at least what's going on... -
Black Knight,
If you search here and other places. You will find the OSD has had problems since day one. For most Dragon users who like to play games and use programs that use graphics.
That OSD is very anoying.
Most of us have disabled the OSD for the QT.
To disable the OSD.
1 - Go to start and enter MSCONFIG and run it.
2 - Select the STARTUP tab.
3 - Scroll down until you find the HP QT on screen display.
4 - remove the checkmark.
5 - Apply and Ok
6 - A box will show up telling you that startup has changed.
7 - Select do not show this box again.
Your QT sounds and controls will still work fine. BUT the OSD will no longer show up and the graphics stuttering should stop.
Good luck -
-
We got it to work on my nephew's TV too.
All the edges on the sceen line up perfectly.
For the people who sent me emails. saying they could not get it to work.
I can only tell you it works fine with now 3 Samsung models.
I know it sounds silly that you have to rename the input. But if you don't rename the HDMI/DVI input to PC. The TV's will not recognize the frequencies put out over the Dragon's HDMI port and make the correct Overscan adjustments to line up the edges correctly.
The frequencies that the TV needs to see are listed on page 64 of the Samsung T6189S owners manual.
You do not have to make any changes ot the NVIDEA control panel. if you did. You need to put it back to the defualts.
So if you are having problems.
Once again. The trick is to use the TV's HDMI/DVI port. (Note: as some people have told me. They had an option to switch the port to DVI. Do not do this. Keep it as HDMI and just rename it to "PC".
Good luck.
Please. If you Find this works OK on other TV's let us know. And the procedure you had to use.
Thanks -
1) (why? Are the 175 signed only for desktop GPUs?) here they say they are signed:
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?id=32
2 (Where is the 169 driver you mention? And how am I supposed to know it's for my 8800m? and how am I suposed to know it is the latest?)
(Thanks - Sorry to sound like a newby... in fact I am, sort of, since this machine for me is a HUGE improvement). -
For notebook, it can be done with vista 32 or vista 64 pre SP1. It's a little involved but start here:
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9243
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=8128
Then go here:
http://laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/vista64
Caveat: If you're using Vista x64 SP1, then once you change the inf file, the driver will lose its WHQL certficate and then it won't work. That's the trouble with Vista x64 SP1 - no unsigned drivers allowed unless you override at boot by pressing F8 and selecting to override the safeguard. Otherwise, you have to wait for many months to get a signed driver from HP. If they update it at all.
The one signed driver, 167.43, which you would have to sub in modded inf does not list the 8800MGTS. Just the 8800M GTX.
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=16277 -
Weird: you speak about 167.43 but I have 167.53 pre installed on my machine. I tried to downgrade to 167.43 or to upgrade to 169.61 but nothing seems to really change to improve games except that Blu-Rays become unreadable... I guess I am stuck like this with games that work kinda weird, or maybe I should just install XP on the second Hard Disk. How about sound drivers if I do that, would I be able to find those on the HP site... would that plan work? -
For instance, they have 167.46 for their p172FX (scroll down to bottom): http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn¶m=2906039R
XP works and there are drivers for sound on this site. Unfortunately not on HP's site. However the built in subwoofer doesn't work in XP. So the sound will be tinny. Also the IR for remote doesn't work either. A few other things don't work, like brightness adjust and eject from the touch panel.
All drivers except video can be found here: http://www.hpdrivers.mercs.us/
BTW, did you trying running the games as administrator? Or in XP compatibility mode? -
Thanx as usual, yes I try compatibility or admin. every time I have a problem, but to tell you the truth it has NEVER worked for me ever-ever... maybe I play weird games who knows (heroes of M&M5, Dark Messiah of M&M, also Bioshock is giving me weird graphic problems) strange, maybe brcausr of vista64...

hey guys.... i made this big mistake and don't know how to fix it. recently bought the hdx with T9300 2.5ghz, 8800m, blu ray drive, 4gb ram but I DIDN'T NOTICE THAT THE RESOLUTION WAS 1620x1050. now i am so dissapointed how can they sell a blu ray drive on such a resolution!! is it possible by any means to upgrade the display to 1920x1200 to play true 1080p? any ideas please
-
If you're within the 21 day return policy, return it then buy another unit.
If not, see if you can exchange it for the 1920x1200 resolution. You'll have to pay more though.
Understand also the the font size will decrease with the higher resolution. That includes web pages. @20", `1680x1050 is the standard monitor resolution. In fact TV's under 40" have a resolution of 1366x768 (720P). At 20" you wouldn't be able to materially tell the difference between 1080p and 720p while playing a blu-ray movie. On a 32" and up you would begin to tell the difference. If you want 1920x1200, you should want it for the increase in screen real estate at the expense of sub normal dot pitch for that size monitor. -
2.0.... you rock thx for your reply been waiting for it all day long...am not in the 21 day return policy. I wanted the higher resolution because i thought that when i play a blu ray movie on my drive i wont be able to get the true 1080p, that was my main concern
-
I'm about to order an hdx and was wondering whether it would be worth it to get the WUXGA display if I'm not going to get a blue ray drive. I'll be using the hdx for browsing the internet and gaming mainly.
-
1920x1200 = 2,304,000 pixels
1680 x 1050 = 1,764,000 pixels.
WUXGA has ~30% more pixels.
That's 30% more pixels that the GPU must deal with. And it's always best to play games as close to native resolution as possible. At 1680 x 1050 it's would be easier on the GPU than at 1920 x 1200. If you have to drop to 1440 x 900 in a game for better playability it will scale somewhat better (using AA and AF) on a 1680 x 1050 than on a 1920 x 1200.
Other thing to consider:
20.1" screen size = 17.15" x 10.79" = 185" Sq.
That means that with 1920 x 1200 you will have 12,454 pixels per inch.
@ 1680 x 1050, you will have 9,535 pixels per inch.
That should give you a reference of the font size of each respective screen. And as you may know, many website's font's don't scale well using font zoom in IE or Firefox and graphics and flash can look awful and "blocky" zoomed using a browser's zoom. You might find yourself leaning forward from time to time to read webpages with WUXGA.
At the end of the day, it's all about preference though. But I'd go with the 1680 x 1050 as that is the standard resolution of LCD monitors of that size and for 22" size. 1920 x 1200 resolution starts on monitors that are 24" and up. -
Hi
I am still testing this monster and I figured there's a lot of 'quick' stuff...
Quickplay (I have vista64 and until I upgrade to version 3.7 it can't read blu ray movies)
Quicktouch (seems to work weird, as 2.0 ponted out better to disable the On Screen Display in winconfig to avoid troubles when trying to manage volume while playing games)
QUICKLAUNCH... which is the little quckplay console on the top left of the keyboard (just the tv/dvd/play/stop/rewind/forward etc... stuff on the left)
Well I am having problems with this one, because I unistalled it and now can't find the driver (I know I am a sucker but I like to break toys to see how they work... EH EH) any idea how to re-enable those buttons?
Here is just an update the actual driver is where?
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2100&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3547191&lang=en
PS
I am actually trying to help the community by making a point about all the different 'quick' stuff so maybe I am not that much of a sucker after all -
Hi, I've just registered having FINALLY gotten through all 57 pages of posts. Bleary-eyed, I'm in need of advice about an HDX model.
The best available model available, in the UK is currently the HDX9320EA and the specs are:
- Intel® Centrino® processor technology
- Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T9300
- 2.50 GHz , Level 2 cache 6 MB
- Intel® PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection
- 4096 MB, 2 x 2048 MB
- 500 GB (2 x 250 GB)
- SATA Hard Disk Drive
- 5400 rpm
- Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD±R/RW Double Layer
- 20.1” WSXGA+ High-Definition HP Ultra Brightview Widescreen Display
- 1680 x 1050 (noted the post above from "2.0")
- NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8800M GTS
- Up to 1791 MB total graphics memory with 512MB dedicated
1)
It doesn't say whether it's 32 or 64bit Vista...just "Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium". Will Vista be a problem with this model? What about the bundled software, will it cause poor performance (I'd rather not have to reinstall everything, especially as I've read that's often the cause of certain functions not working).
2)
I'm looking to do screen capture tutorial videos and using Windows MovieMaker to edit them, do you think this system will cope 'out of the box'? I ask, 'cause I notice a lot of you are talking about modifications; updating drivers; etc...
3)
I'm uncertain about the 5400rpm hard drive, as I've read a lot of reviews saying 7200rpm is what's needed for editing video. Is the solution just to get any make of external hard drive @ 7200rpm and run MovieMaker from that?
4)
Another concern are seeming problems with quality - dead pixels, failure of the finger-touch buttons, etc. Is this just a few unlucky customers, or is it HP trying to pack too much into the machine?
Very impressed with your forum,
Graham. -
Hi Graham-h
I would be very surprised if anybody disliked this system - It's truly amazing - We just try to fine tune it. That said if you like to play games XP it is always a better choice... I am going install it in a second partition. It definitely work great out of the box (just run msconfig and disable the quicktouch OSD, it's the only thing that could be annoying) -
Hi Graham-h,
That's a great set of specs. As long as you get one that works. if you notice anything wrong when you get it out of the box. Invoke the 21 day return policy. Don't even bother with the Robots in customer service.
As you may of read. I let my 21 day pass. So I could not get a refund.
But at least after 7 months and 4 HDX's. (I think I may have been a BETA tester for you guys hee hee.) HP kept sending HDX's until I got one that worked at the beginning of May. I thought it would have been much more easy for HP to just give me a refund instead of keep building HDX's for me. I got one that works great. It's a month old now. We have been using it as a HTPC. So far we have watched 8 BD movies with our HDX hooked up to our 61 inch TV though HDMI. I wonder how many hours the BD player will give us before it has to be replaced.
We do not play much games. But the Crysis demo worked great on it.
Just make sure you don't get talked into having the HDX sent into for repair if you just took it out of the box and somthing is wrong. Make sure you exchange it or get a refund per the 21 day HP policy.
Good luck. -
I am starting to be a little annoyed, I am still not managing to get my QUICKLAUNCH buttons to work - it's not a huge problem, but the 3 Quickplay buttons on the extreme left and the Eject button are disabled (still lit in blue but disabled) also the button on the remote used to dim lights is not working anymore... Any suggestion? I tried removing the battery as someone seemed to suggest at the beginning of this thread but nothing. Maybe I started the critical quicktouch update and that messed up something?
Any idea how to fix this? -
Hey Tinman,
really appreciate the 21 day policy...
oh, and yes, I am envious of your 61" setup; had a 42" Samsung Plasma a few years ago, and that was the proverbial mut's nuts
Graham. -
Hey Black Knight,
I really like the look of the thing and the spec (except no XP option and only 5400rpm hard drive)...it's the number of faults that's a concern, especially when I'm about to hand over £1600 ($3200).

The 1st HDX I got in December 2007. None of the Quick launch buttons worked at all. In fact this was my 1st phone call to support.
Not knowing any better I followed their instructions and as they had me do. Install the previous version of the Bios.
This fixed the the QL buttons. But screwed up all kinds of other stuff.
So if support tells you to change the Bios. Don't do it.
Anyways, After reading your posts about the critical update. I decided to install it. To see what would happen. I have all auto updates turned off. Since this thing is working like a champ. I do not install any updates without doing research on it 1st. I learned now to always make a restore point before I ever install any updates or new software. So I was not worried about breaking things.
Well I did the critical security update. I hate to say this. But all my buttons still work fine, "Knock on wood" hee hee. Including the remote.
Oh!, Before I forget. The last HDX, the one I'm on now. Did not come with norton Installed. The case manager and I had a long discussion about Norton. Since I already had a subscibtion to Tren Micro. We decioded to put that on this HDX. Could be why Everything is working much better on this one then the last one. The first 3 machines all had Norton installed.
Just remeber. It took HP 4 tries with me to get it right.
As I was reminded the other day. That was about $20,000 plus shipping and build time, they spent on one customer to get it right. Which I still think was rather strange. That's why I keep thinking that, HP had some other reason to do this with me then to just have a happy customer.
Sorry I can't be of any more help with the buttons.
But as you know. I have been though this. Name the problem. I most likely have had it.
Just for the heck of it. With the remote. Take a clean lint free cloth. Or the cloth that came with the HDX and wipe down the remote. If you did not remove the clear plastic strip on top of the remote when it was taken out of the box. Peel that off.
Hold the remote directly in front of the IR sensor in front of the keyboard and press the movie mode button. See if that works.
Good luck. -
Sorry, One more comment. maybe already answered?/
Have you guys with the QL sound problem. Gone into the Control panel/additional items menu/QT options and tried Sounds 2 or 3? -
That update, BlackKnight, WILL disable some or all of the buttons. I read that somewhere at hp's site. I also read that 'swap the battery out, do this, do that, hold down the button, yada trick' will get it to work after that crit update. I tried it and said phuck it. Too much pain in the ass lifting that big old thing to do that.Have a great day.
Aloha
Oh yeah, Black, if you do what i posted above and they still don't work pm me. I'll tell you exactly where i got the files and stuff. (i'm at home and my hdx is at work- i'll be at the station tomorrow) -
That's what drove me to mess with updates...
Regarding the remote it does work, it's just the camera button that doesn't anymore... -
Warning Warning!!!!!!!!!
Just turned on my HDX. My buttons stopped working. All buttons but the Wifi on off no longer work. I just put a phone call into my case manager. Maybe I'll get a 5th HDX out of this. Hee hee.
I wonder why they worked all day yesterday after I did the update. maybe you have to shutdown and not just re-boot to break it.
Real good HP.
News Headlines. "HP critical Update. Creates a critical problem"
So after a month of working perfectly. My HDX is broken.
Do not do updates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Old story. If it aint broke. Dont fix it.
At least now I get to try and fix it too. Someone needs to put out an alert and procedure on how to fix this. Short of doing a full restore. -
I'm in the UK and ordered my HDX before finding this forum. I've had the machine just over a week now and the problems I was having have been sorted out all thanks to the posters here...THANKS!
My only concern on running the HDX was in 'stuttery' playing of DVDs. I'll be exploring video creation/editing with this machine so anything wonky with the display/running of a DVD rang alarm bells. Setting driver and power options/plan to high performance seems to have sorted that out. Service PAck 1 for the Vista has helped in performance generally, boot up is about half the time of what it was previously. I'll be removing 'bloatware' and trying out other tweaks to impove performace as and when I can.
The HDX replaces my HP pavilion used for GIS/mapping, office stuff, sounds, bit of gaming. I'm gobsmacked by the improvement the HDX brings to everything I'm doing. Superb it is.
I purchased from Laskys here in UK for GBP 1350, very top end of my budget. Delivery was a problem. Both Comet (Laskys parent) and Laskys have probs in distributing their goodies. If in UK you use Laskys, choose a midweek day for delivery. Also arrange a premium delivery via Parcel Force if you can, it's how I managed to get the HDX delivered when the usual Laskys system completely botched up (twice).
Thanks again all of you posters, you made me confident in using the HDX and secure knowing there's some top notch help available here. I'm not a 'techie' by any means so be prepared for some daft questions from me as and when I do have probs/queries -
-
unhenged, great post...
if I go through with it, was going to get it directly from HP's website...with Laskys, I can add 2 years warranty for the same price. Don't HP like selling their own stuff?
By the way, to uninstall the 'bloatware', is it just a simple case of going to Add/Remove programs, or has HP made the process a @rse? Not sure what other bloatware it comes with, but I don't want Norton...have got their 360 software on a current system and don't like it.
Was considering AVG Anti Virus instead...any recommendations? -
Yep, This work Looks Ok here too.
Keeping my hands off of it now. No more screwing around with it.
Just using as a HTPC. I don't get inside my car's engine and mess around. So, I'm not going to screw around with the HDX workings.
Thanks -
Hey tinman2007... It's staring to be funny man... sorry
Actually I am working out a solutin myself for the buttons, if it works I'll let you know... -

I'll dig around and look for the HP post about that crit update which states it disables some/all of the QL buttons. The post also said they were working on a fix. I've been waiting and its been about 5 months now. -
BTW, There's a HDX coupon for $450 off which expires 6/14: NB1297
Works online or on the phone. -
hi
i download sata driver from this page: http://www.hpdrivers.mercs.us/
but it is a exe file, and want a floppy!!!!
but Dragon haven't Floppy
please someone help and explain me
tanX -
As promised many posts ago, here is a thermal image of my HDX.
I'm sorry that its a blurry shot- its because our Thermal Imager Camera here at work does not have the cables to transfer images to our station PC yet. So I took the pic of the cameras screen with my digi-cam.
Anyway, the white areas are low heat areas. After about 15 mins, I was getting low 80's at the center green crosshair. In the shot, the bottom of the screen was 84 degrees F. The left side of the keyboard, which all of you are familiar with, I was getting mid 70's.
I will update later with clearer images once we get the cables.
Enjoy gang.
Aloha -
OMG 2.0 find me the $3000 off. K thanks! -
Man, gotta be quick on the draw with some of these coupons. -
@ asuhoru
Cool pic BTW. Thanks for keeping to a promise. -
The idea is that you will need to make the SATA driver a part of the XP installation. To do that you will need a free but excellent program called nlite.
Link to nlite:
http://www.nliteos.com/
Then follow the instructions on this site on how to "slipstream" the SATA driver into the XP installation:
http://maxeasyguide.blogspot.com/2008/04/preparations-for-winxp-installation-cd.html -
YOU GUYS ARE GONNA LOVE ME FOR THIS!!!! HDX quicklaunch solution!
I found a fix for the QUICKLAUNCH issue! Apparently lots of people have had problems with installing disinstalling quicktouch quickplay quicklaunch and all those quick stuff... result: the blue light console... "OUR BEAUTIFUL HDX BLUE LIGHT CONSOLE" has lots of buttons that don't work anymore (in my case the 3 quickplay keys on the left and the eject button) - Well guys go here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...60&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3672945&lang=en
and download the driver 38171
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38171.exe
I know it is not for the HDX in theory BUT IT WORKS!!
(I have vista64, I suppose it would work for other systems as well?) In any case I believe that the quick-guys at HP got confused (as most people do) between all those quick names and just forgot to add that driver in the HDX download page.
Good luck! (I know you love me now) -
Excellent. excellent work! +rep

Alright now I'd like to figure out why the sounds related to the quicktouch buttons don't work anymore. Others seem to have the same problem:
By changing the volume or the bass/treeble effect originally I used to get a light tapping sound that was possible to change in the control panel. Now while I still get the (rather annoying) OSD that can be disabled by running msconfig, the sounds are not there anymore. And no update can change that at all.
I am starting to suspect it is a codec problem, or something that has to do with the application set as default to play the .wav files. A third possibility could have to do with a mysterious "eq" equalizer that is supposed to be installed with the quicktouch update (from the HP site: "Adds an Audio Equalizer (EQ) adjustment for HP Pavilion HDX Series Notebooks.")
... maybe that's simply the OSD relative to the choiche of sounds?
Anyway -
By going in c:\program files (x86)\hewlett-packard\quicktouch notice that the sound are still there and can be played with win media player (which is cool because once we figure this out we'll actually be able to customize them)... maybe someone a little more awaken than me can figure that out? (it's 5 am here).
I tried changing the default program to play .wav files but quickplay doesn't seem able to do that...
Instead if I change the extension to .mpg for example I get the window error sound... I EVEN GET IT WHEN I PRESS THE VOLUME ON THE BLUE CONSOLE!
Any idea?
Can someone who has the quicktouch volume sounds working fine please check in controlpanel\sound\sounds if he is using windows default (or which one) and whether there is a choice for the quicktouch (maybe the solution is as simple as that? After all they are .wav files)
