I learned about the HDX dragon here. Thanks for all the info. I'm planning on getting one (need a portable desktop computer) because the larger screen looks great. I was going to wait for the newer update before buying (June or July). However, I saw in HP's new models announcement no mention of a 20" 'laptop' or dragon successor. Does this mean the HDX is in its last iteration now? No new 20" laptop style portables? If so maybe I should buy now. I have a 17" notebook and was looking forward to a bigger screen

Two years warranty if you *don't* buy from the manufacturer...makes you wonder doesn't it

My girlfriend recently had huge probs getting an order delivered from Comet so I was quite happy to order via Laskys. Wrong move. It was only later, when delivery probs began, that I discovered that Comet actually owns Laskys. Hey ho, after a polite but firm series of phone calls the order came through. If you do go HDX and use Laskys then it'll be well worth paying a few extra quid to have it delivered via Parcel Force if you can arrange it.

Re the bloatware, yeah I'm just using Add/Remove/uninstall. Haven't really done much pruning yet but no probs whatsover. Re the antivirus software, I had been using Macafee previously. I know what you mean about Norton but I have it running on the HDX and found it easier to use than Macafee so I'll prolly end up staying with Norton on this lovely new machine.

Thanx for the pointer Asuhoru, have read about that fix. Myself I only checked for updates via the HDX/Windows Device Manager. As everything seemed to be up to date I left the driver alone and since Service Pack 1 & switching to high perormance options seems to have fixed the stutter I'm happy for now that the machine can do what HP says it can do (multimedia etc) and that it can do what I want it to. When I do get time though I'll try the fix you pointed to anyway just to compare, thanx again.

Look a page or two back, there's a $450 off coupon. That may have an impact on your decision.

As for a new HDX, Possible reasons why no mention during the HP's Berlin conference and new model unveling:

    1. It's discontinued. They just gave away 31 of them, fully loaded on a web-wide contest. They paid tax and shipping to the recipient. That's a writeoff for HP. Such a move doesn't bode well for the unit's future or it's a PR campaign to develop awareness of a 20" notebook form factor.

    2. HP's waiting for Nvidia's 9800M GTS, GTX and/or waiting for ATI's 3870 mobility.

    3. HP's waiting for Intel's quad core.

    4. HP decided to let Voodoo handle the next iteration so they can sell it for the premium they originally wanted to. When the HDX first came out, it was selling for around $4000. Then dropped to mid to low $3000. Now you can get one for under $2000 to around $2500 with coupon depending on config. (At those prices, I just bought two of them using coupons.) HP's not making any money on these at those prices. The prices during the Penryn refresh back in Jan is when they were making money on the unit.

You can get it now. Hold onto it for 21 days (clock starts from delivery date). If news/confirmed rumor comes out during that time, you can always return it and wait for the new model. Just bear in mind, the new model will be much higher in price. Figure $1000 to $1500 more.

BTW coupon for $450 off ends the 14th. Code: NB1297

Also, here's a quick tip: If you have an Amex or Platinum Visa or Mastercard, those cards have a free program which doubles the warranty up to 1 year more. Check the original docs that came with your card. So if you get 1 year with HP, they add an additional year at no charge. If you get 2 year with HP, the card will add an aditional year for a total of 3 years. Get 3 year warranty from HP, additional year with card equals 4 years total.

Thanks for your help guys... I've just gone and spanked my savings pot on the HDX9320.

unhenged, I got it from Laskys.com; I phoned them up because of your delivery problems and they said it was because they'd put in a new delivery system and everything's fine now (what that? "famous last words" I hear you say?... we'll see, should come this Tuesday/Wednesday).

As my life usually is under the Law of Sod, I'll probably be gracing this forum with problems in a week or so!

Hey guys, as I said earlier I fixed the quick launch issue, I am now trying to fix the quick touch, I found 3 wav files in the quicktouch installation folder, by playing them with media player I recognised the three sounds originally installed as options in the volume OSD, only when I press the volume blue light no sound is played... (maybe a codec problem, or something like that?)

Anyway could you please see in the windows sound panel if you guys have an option to select those sounds? If so in which sound scheme?

Could the problem have something to do with MS visual C++ 2005? Anyone knows what it is and if it is a good idea to uninstall it?

I am asking because when you install the quicktouch it mentions that it is updating MS visual C++

Bought mine when it first came out with the HD Tuner and Vista Ultimate x64.

I've noticed especially since updating to SP1 that any heavy disk activity pretty much cripples the machine and any multitasking .... anyone else see this ...

Overall, great machine, but wish to hell I could get XP on it ... did an SP2 install and couldn't get any audio to work ...

I read that the speakers are only designed to work with Vista. I agree; the option of XP, had it been available, I'd have gone for it.

    Link to XP 32bit drivers:

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers

Driver 169.09 will work. In any event, click on each of the NF files to open them and read towards the bottom of the file. In each of theme there is a list of compatible chips. 169.09 lists the 8800M GTS.

Just checked FedEx and it will be here today, Grats HP for delivering it 3 days before they said would be built by :)

    Now on to my questions:

The setup I am getting is:
HP Pavilion HDX customizable Notebook PC
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Extreme Processor X9000 (2.80GHz)
    20.1" diagonal WSXGA+ High-Definition HP Ultra Brightview Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050)
    4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS
HP Imprint Finish (Dragon) + Microphone + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam
    Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection and Bluetooth(TM)
    320GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (160GB x 2)
LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
Integrated HP HDTV Hybrid TV Tuner and 4 Altec Lansing speakers +the HP Triple Bass Reflex subwoofer
    9 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
Power Pack software - muvee autoProducer Premium, Cyberlink DVD Suite Premium and Serif Web Plus
    Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Couple questions if I may. I have owned a few HP laptops before and I know they come loaded with tons of crapware I dont need. Since I own a full version of VistaUltimate 64, my plan is to blow away the factory install and install a fresh copy of Ultimate64. Are there any "gotchas" I should look outy for doin this ? I did go to HP's website to look at the 64bit drivers I will need to DL and I see SEVEARL versions of the HDX and am a bit unsure which to use....help ?

Also, any specific advice for me on this new monster ?

    Thanks

BTW...not sure if this is still a good cupon, but I used Coupon CA5578 for a 25% discount on a phone order to the HP store, thought I would pass that along

So I'm hearing word of a possible discontinuation of the HDX. Would we know if HP is going to discontinue it before they actually do so? I was planning on waiting till the new HDX model came out. However, if they are going to discontinue it then I want to buy the old(current) model off the Costco site before they take it off. (costco discounts the HDX an insane amount, even with the HP recently discounted on the HP site it's still $200 cheaper through Costco)
any advise or information would be helpful

just from 2.0's reason why there has been no word of a new model, on page 61 he said this as one of the reasons:

"1. It's discontinued. They just gave away 31 of them, fully loaded on a web-wide contest. They paid tax and shipping to the recipient. That's a writeoff for HP. Such a move doesn't bode well for the unit's future or it's a PR campaign to develop awareness of a 20" notebook form factor."

    There's now a $500 off coupon. Code: NB4796
Only has 2000 uses so don't wait too long.

And you probably wouldn't know if HP is going to discontinue it. Like their all-in-one they had last year. It just vanished without any word. Then many months later, they have these new all-in-ones.

Hey, I just bought 2 HDX's plus a TX2500 tablet last week. Canceled the TX to reorder using the $500 off coupon.

Anyway, in the future, refer to this site for HP coupon codes: http://hpwebsavings.com/

With the money you are saving with the current HDX, it's pretty much worth it. a new model should it come out will cost you at least $1000 more. Will there be any feature worth paying $1000+ more for? I can't imagine.

Just think, just two months ago, a similarly spec'd HDX I was looking at was $1200+ more than what I paid.

Do "you" feel that HP would discontinue the HDX? Is that why you bought 2 of them? I was under the impression that you have been waiting for the release of HP's next generation HDX.

I was waiting. But after the Berlin show last week where their entire Centrino 2 (Montevina) and AMD PUMA lines were announced without mention of the HDX, things started to add up. I did a post a few pages back about my speculations concerning the unit.

    It's here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3476609&postcount=604

Nevertheless, should they come out with a new model that just seriously takes the cake, there's always the 21 day return policy or eBay for the two I bought. But having paid 40%+ less than the configured price at just 2 months ago, 55% less than 6 months ago, just made economic sense. Seemed like a fire sale. I also bought an HP AIO wireless printer (j6480), a decked out tablet (TX2500) and a crap load of accessories from various sources and still have money to burn relative to my original budget.

In any event, waiting may have paid off handsomely.

2.0, when you bought your HDX models through ebay, did you purchase them new or refurbished? I was thinking about purchasing a HDX and figured it was worth it to buy off ebay and then purchase a warranty through HP. I'm just trying to get as much information as I can before I make my decision on what I'm going to do.

    Thanks

No, I bought them new through HP. My ebay comment was meant to say that if I wanted to sell them in order to buy a possible new model in the future, I could so that as an option.

Bear in mind that the $500 off coupon has a very limited use life. So if you're going to pull the trigger, do it soon. And if you miss it, as in it comes up invalid, phone your order in and try to use it. The rep may say it's expired but may be willing to do something for you.

I see! Many people I know including myself have been waiting for a next generation HDX that incorporates the Montevina platform and a Blu Ray writer. It would be a shame if all our efforts waiting patiently (and sometime not so patiently) were left in vain.

I wish there was a way to get something rock solid on this.

Be advised, that $500 off coupon isn't exclusive to the HDX. It's applicable to all HP computers configured over $1399. So the 2000 coupon limit can be eaten up fairly quickly.

There's always an external BD writer. As far as patience in vain, just think, you'll be getting the HDX at the lowest possible prices since its inception. For what Montevina offers, you have to consider if it would have been worth +$1500 more than current pricing with Santa Rosa were a new model to come out. The HDX with Santa Rosa/Penryn is pretty fast and gets up to 3hrs on battery. 8800MGTS with its 256bit bus will have some gaming life of at least a few years. The sound, the screen... and the community support.

Hi all, I recently ordered an HP HDX. It has not arrived yet but I have a few questions:

    1) Has there been any recent discovery of a new carrying case for this laptop? I'd prefer a backpack but I accept that may not be possible. I will see if the laptop somehow fits into my 17" laptop backpack loose in the meantime. I wouldn't be travelling with it much. I'm considering the Dicota MultiGiant if I can find it to ship to the U.S.

    2) I currently own a Dell Inspiron 9300. It came with Windows XP Home OEM. What I found when I went to perform a clean install is that I couldn't use the product Key on my Dell for my retail copy of Windows XP Home because it wasn't Windows XP Home OEM. Fast forwarding to now, I chose Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit for this laptop. I own a retail CD for Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit. Will I be able to use the retail Vista disk to perform a clean install? Or will the product key for the laptop not work with the retail disk like with XP on my Dell?

    1. Don't know.

    2. Believe it or not, everything you need to do a clean install is already on the HDX's hardrive. See this thread on how it is done: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228.

Thanks for the link. I assumed that the backup partition might include the bloatware that comes pre-installed. Good to know that I can perform a clean install from that partition.

Actually while I was making my Restore DVD (or whatever they are called) I noticed that empty space on the restore partition kept changing size.

I didn't really investigate any further because I didnt't want to take chances while making those disks, but I suspect that the restore partition was actually updated... So since I got rid of some bloatware before doing that maybe the day I need it I'll have a good surprise...

Is there any way to take a look at that image on disk E: ?

A whole bunch of people waited for the release of the next HDX with Montevina with Cantiga chipset. Buying now then watching the next generation HDX get released would not feel good to say the least.

Brooke Crothers over at Cnet News Blog http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-9893748-7.html?%255E$ states: HP's HDX gaming laptop would be a candidate for the mobile quad-core chip, siting Credit: HPn and Intel.

It is difficult to believe that HP will let go of HDX its flagship notebook and not replace it with another equally as impressive.

Key words are "would be a candidate." That's no guarantee. And that was back in March. Between then and now there would have been leaks and at least a teaser at HP's Connect Your World conference in Berlin. Also HP brought this HDX along with the DV6000 to Computex in Taipei early this month while everyone else was debuting Centrino 2 notebooks. Granted the QX9300 (2.5ghz quad core) won't be out until September. And if that is what HP is waiting for before debuting a new iteration, that's a long wait and a big risk because the current iteration of the HDX will probably cease being sold once the new Centrino2 notebook line up debuts next month. HP is not known for selling obsolete platforms along side new ones.

The HDX is beautiful. A work of art. Truly one of a kind.

But consider that VoodooPC's new mantra is all about "Blending art, innovation, and performance." If there's to be a new 20.1" notebook out of HP, and considering that Voodoo once had a 20.1" notebook, and considering that the HDX debuted at >$4000, it stands to reason that VoodooPC would be handling any future version. VoodooPC can charge the price premium HP originally wanted to maintain for the HDX. In fact, a new 20.1"notebook out of VoodooPC would most probably start out at $2999.99 bare-boned, with options topping out at around $6000. Voodoo is in the process or rounding out their portfolio. They've got a 15" and 17" on the way. I'd expect a "God-mode" 20" out of them.

The HDX just doesn't fit HP's portfolio of affordable, stylish, feature rich, yet above average performance notebook PCs. The starting price disparity was and still is too high by comparison. All the reviews listed as a con "pricey." And "if you can justify the price..." They say this because it's out of character for HP to sell something so expensive. Though, in my opinion, and arguably in most everyone else's, it's the greatest unit they've ever made. The greatest 20" notebook ever made. But HP having to come so far down in price since its inception does not bode well and also doesn't fit the cheaper price/ faster tech paradigm. None of their other models have come down in price in the same manner.

Roll the dice, sift the tea leaves. But factor in the economics of getting a very unique notebook (only two 20" notebooks available for sale in the world - Dell's fossil and the elegant HDX) that just 3 months ago was selling for $1000 more. Your other option is as far as 20" screen is all-in-one PCs from HP, DELL, Gateway, and Apple. Or the new 18.4" notebooks coming out of Asus and Toshiba. But they're all underpowered as compared to the HDX.

Think about your needs. How important is a blu-ray burner? An external one would be faster than anything internal and have more features. Like the LG one. For Video editing, internal harddrives would be faster than USB, but you could off load to external via the very fast eSATA port or if in no rush, via USB or via ethernet to NAS. Since you're not an avid gamer, the 8800MGTS is more than sufficient.

HP won't give a heads up concerning its discontinuance. You'll only know for sure when you can't purchase it anymore.

I believe it's encrypted. When I get the HDX, I'll take a look. Also, wil take a look into the sound files question/problem you had.

About a case....went through three hardsided small pull alongs. Bear in mind the dimensions they quote are outside not inside. You have to play with some foam rubber to get around and over the two interior slides for the pull out handle and the bracing for the rubber wheels. Cost me a fortune in return shipping. The one to get is the HP one on their site . You still have to play with foam rubber but you get a GREAT case when done. I could drop mine a mile with no damage (slight exaggeration). It is also a great backpack configuration. There is another sleve type out there (name eludes me at the moment) but it has no padding, not much protection at all and over $150 by the time you configure it. Go with the HP pull along, you;ll be happy.

Thanks, I still don't get any of those 3 sounds while using the Quicktouch volume buttons, but after unistalling the Quicktouch driver I get instead the "error" sound ("exclamation" I think I's called) the cool part is that it is a sound I like and works exactly as the other .wav files (changes volume while pushing it) ... So in the end it's even better because I can use any sound I want by switching in the control panel!

I have both of these. 1st is a carry bag, top grade. You can visit their site...sfbags.com. These are a work of art! 2nd is the leather carry case for Dell's discontinued M2010 portable desktop; Was $169...I got one for $40!, from Dell. It's big but for $40, I'll adjust.

Heh the $500 Pavilion coupon that 2.0 mentioned has now been posted on TabletPCReview, but they only mentioned it for the tx2500z.

I'd also ordered the tx2500z and the HDX, but I'm now trying to cancel the tx2500z order. Not enough in the budget, especially since I'd also ordered a 24" iMac a few days ago.

It's funny timing as I'm needing to decide on new home PCs for my family members. I've been waffling among three choices:

    - WUXGA 24" Apple iMac all-in-one (notebook components except graphics & HDD) -- refreshed end of April

    - WUXGA 20.1" HP Pavilion HDX desktop replacement notebook -- updated in January

    - WSXGA+ 22" HP TouchSmart IQ506 touchscreen all-in-one (notebook components except HDD) -- available July 13 as preconfigured model only

The TouchSmart IQ506 is definitely the slowest and has the lowest resolution. Selling points are the touchscreen (infrared as opposed to resistive/capacitive), sleek design, and lowest price.

The 24" iMac has either a 2.8GHz or 3.06GHz (1066MHz FSB) custom Penryn mobile CPU, and either a 256MB ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO or 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS desktop graphics card. Desktop HDD up to 1TB.

The HDX has from 2.1GHz to 2.8GHz (800MHz FSB) Penryn CPU, and either a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT or 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS notebook graphics card. Dual notebook HDDs up to 640GB. Benefits over the iMac include a Blu-ray reader / DVD writer combo, HDTV tuner (like the IQ506), enhanced speakers/sub, and obviously better portability and a built-in battery. It's also the most expensive, although the coupon really helps.

Hmm, I wonder how the iMac's desktop graphics compares to the HDX's graphics?

P.S. I should mention that we own the original TouchSmart IQ770 model as well as the original tx1000z tablet (although all of our other laptops/tablets are ThinkPads)...

By the way, how come the HDX is now only offered (via phone or online) with the 64-bit version of Vista? Wasn't the 32-bit version available in the past??

I've stayed away from 64-bit because of incompatibility with some of the applications that I use. So far I've gotten by with the 3GB+ limit of Vista 32-bit, and have collected only the 32-bit version of drivers, apps and patches (such as on my BartPE boot CD).

Is it feasible to reinstall a 32-bit Vista on the HDX from scratch, assuming HP will always provide both 32-bit and 64-bit drivers? For example I can buy Vista (32-bit) OEM from NewEgg.com for $179 ($169 if more than one). The OEM disclaimer says it's for system builders who will have to provide all support for Vista, and that the license is locked to the machine and not transferrable.

But after I have this Vista 32-bit OEM DVD media in my hand, is there any way I can just transfer the HDX's preinstalled Vista product key (which technically belongs to the Vista 64-bit OEM preinstall)? If so then I can save the new product key for another machine.

Has anyone done this, or do most people in fact prefer the 64-bit Vista?

Go for the HDX if you've got loot to burn. Advantages over the iMac are many except for the 24" screen. Also consider that for a 20", the industry standard resolution is 1680 x 1050. For a 24" monitor, it's 1920 x 1200. Best for your eyes.

Obviously the HDX has a built-in UPS (aka batt) that lasts for nearly 3 hours. The iMac @ 24" consumes >250 watts. so you'd need a fairly large ups if you want to even get 15mins of back up time. More expense and more space consumed.

Far more software for a PC than a Mac.

I considered getting an iMac over an HDX and running boot camp with XP. But the total cost of ownership was more (watts wise - the HDX doesn't use 180 watts as listed by the PSU. It consumers anywhere from 40 to 100 watts depending on what you're doing. They oversize the PSU in order reserve watts in order to charge the battery while the unit is on.)

All told, the 20" version of the iMac would probably be more a family oriented computer than any of what you listed. The size of it allows it to fit under standard 24" high kitchen cabinets. Keyboard is detached - in case of a spill or some other catastrophy, just get a new keyboard. It's also more watt friendly. (Most always consider total cost of ownership.) And if the family just needs it for web, email, and photos/movies, Mac excels at this. And it sells for about $1500. $100 more for an UPS if you're so inclined. And you're all set.

Can't transfer the key. But the OEM media would have a key so you're all good there.

What programs do you have that don't work with Vista x64? Or is it that some functionality of certain programs won't work in x64? The biggest problem with x64 sp1 is that drivers must be signed. The work around sucks and is required to be performed at each boot.

The only driver that you might want to update periodically with Vista 32 is the video driver. But that's primarily if you game a lot.

More and more gamers are switching to Vista x64. But that's on desktop systems where signed drivers are plentiful. Nvidia nor ATI puts out mobile drivers. (Nvidia does but not neraly as often as their desktop updates). It's up to the manufacturer to do it or the community. But the community can't sign drivers. So perhaps things will change on that front soon where Nvidia and ATI are concerned.

One last thing, the HDX, as well as all Santa Rosa base notebooks, will be able to go to 8GB RAM. The chipset is capable of accessing it. Only thing is that currently there are no 4GB sodimms. But they are on their way and due out before the end of the year from the lieks of Crucial and Kingston.

I could not agree with you more – especially that the HDX is beautiful, a work of art, truly one of a kind, and the best ever that HP came out with.

But consider this: because HP is not known for selling obsolete platforms alongside new ones could be and probably is the reason why (IMHO I believe) it has dropped the price on current HDX’s.

Thanks to your tip on LG I did some research. LG’s Blu-Ray Ray-Writer/LightScribe (External) BE06LU10 and its internal equivalent GGW-H20L are both excellent. The internal LG GGW-H20L is equipped with 1st Gen. eSATA. Though I am not sure to what extent its added access time and writing speed are if any.

The following relates to your contemplation as to whether HP could be/might be fazing out the HDX anytime soon.

    June 19, 2008
Today, we inquired with Lynaii at Hpshopping. Lynaii contacted her supervisor and after a good waiting period, she came back confirming that the HDX will not be discontinued anytime soon and that it is one of their strongest selling products. Their call center in Boise Idaho is told ahead of time if an item is to be discontinued, she added. To further confirm this, Lynaii contacted Hpshopping product manager Jim Hansen, who confirmed to her that the HDX will not be discontinued for a long time if at all. It is staying in the HP lineup until at least next summer.

Per my request, Lynaii also asked Jim Hansen whether he knew of what date the HDX will be released with Montevina marketed as Centrino 2 and/or the inclusion of a Blu-Ray writer. He did not know the answer to this question.

2.0 - One last thing, if indeed all Santa Rosa base notebooks inclusive of the HDX will be able to go to 8GB RAM (and that the chipset is capable of accessing ALL of it) is great news. And if that is the case, I should think the Montevina would have access to 8GB RAM too.
