Doesn't the warranty cover dead pixals? you'd have to wait but you should be covered for free repairs.

has anyone updated thier BIOS, there is a new version on HP website
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3671119&os=2093&lang=en
OH and also what are your CPU temperatures? i m worried abt mine, Core# 0 is at 32 while Core# 1 is at 42 always even at idle. -
My HDX is in Anchorage, AK!!!! They finished building it on the 27th, 4 days before they said it would be finished .
I bought an HDX for school work and home, make it's hard to answer HP when they ask what I use my computer for
I got mine with 2.5 duo CPU
4GB ram
1900x1200 screen
8800 GTS
320 GB harddrive
I'm really glad I came on these forums thanks 2.0 for all your helpI didn't reply but I've read through every post to make sure I was purchasing a machine I could be happy with.
I'm an animation student at digipen and I'm currently intering at TBanimation. I'll be using my laptop to run games like outpost 2 in 1900x1200 rez
ok ok no I have other big games to run mass effect which I'll be buying soon.
also thanks to this thread for finding me a bag to carry the laptop in
I'll post what happens on the 2nd when it comes in. I'm so glad I saw your past 2.0 about the coupon not lasting much longer. It sealed the deal for me. -
Trentox,
I am also expecting mine on July 2nd. From Shanghai, to
Anchorage, to Indianapolis, then hopefully here to St. Louis.
What a trip. I hope some kid got on board and stowed away!
Mine was also 'built' a few days early. Hope they didn't cut any
corners. From these posts, I'm afraid to touch anything, like
downloading, upgrading, installing, etc.
I'm not an IT type, and I'm almost sure my old versions of Adobe
Premiere and After Effects won't run under Vista 64-bit. I just hope
I can wirelessly get to my brokers, so I can manage my sinking
portfolios.
Based on recent posts, I cut some frills, like 4 to 3 RAM, and 2.5 to
2.4 processor, and one step below the highest HD monitor. I also used
a $500 coupon, which I'd never have known about without this forum.
Thank you thank you thank you! Gee, I hope everything works.
Now all I have to do is call Charter Cable, or switch to ATT for wireless.
Any opinions?

Cores at Idle should be around 35C. 42 is a bit high. I had something similiar and also wide fluctuations. So I opened up the HDX and cleaned off the thermal compound, replacing it with arctic silver 5 on both the GPU and CPU. They did a poorish sort of job with the thermal goop. Too thick and not full coverage. Ran W prime and 3D mark06 for an hour to stress it after I was finished. GPU idles between 43 and 46. Max 66. CPU cores 33-37. Max 53.
BTW, scores for Wprime were 31.26secs. 7876 - 7898 3D Mark 06
One must use the service manual to disassemble/reassemble the unit. Takes around 3.5 to 4 hours to complete the job. I took pictures, might upload. Not a job for the faint of heart. But not an impossible job. Must have the proper tools and use something to protect screen and lid finish.
Next job: Clean install of Vista x64. I mean, really now, the amount of bloat is fantastic. -
How are you going to go about disinstalling bloat? clean vista64 reinstall form a DVD or is there another way I am unaware of?
Personally I have the impression that it's a lot of work just to gain a few GBs... And nowadays a GB is not that much... You really think you are going to gain some speed? I would just get rid of Norton...
Probably you know this already, but in case you don't when you start going nuts about those icons in the "GAMES" folder that keep changing, I found a little program that fixes them:
http://ryzza007.googlepages.com/vgee
(better than messing with the registry each time IMO) -
Hi all,
I'm seriously thinking about buying an HDX9350.
One of the uses will be to take it to our monthly LAN party, so carrying the beast is in order at last once a month.
So my question is: what do you guys use to carry it if needed?
I've seen mention of the Dicota Multigiant, but are there other solutions? Maybe even something as crazy as a backpack? What about a messenger bag/sleeve combo?
Thanks for your input guys -
It really is an awesome unit. Excellent build quality. The screen is simply perfect. The sound especially while gaming is off the hook. Was playing COD2 and the rumble from the subwoofer adds a nice immersive touch. It's more immediate than the floor subwoofer I was using with my old setup.
Also hooked up a Wacom Bamboo tablet to take advantage of Vista's native tablet support. Installed Onenote...
It's the first computer that I've owned in 20+ years of owning them where each time I look at it when entering the room I awe-struckly say, "damn."
Anyway...
Bought an OEM version of Vista X64 off Newegg for $99 (+frikkin' tax, but free ship). Going to use a free tool called Activation backup and restore (ABR) to save the product code and activation of the HDX's Vista install. This way I don't need the product code off the box of the OEM version nor will it have to be activated again.
Did save the HP background though ('cause it's pretty sweet) and the swsetup folder.
Reason for going clean... need to streamline the install and gain more raw control over it. Not expecting overall performance to jump appreciably. But boot time should lose about 20 to 30 secs. Currently I'm looking at about 2 mins before CPU idles. Not really worried about the GBs gained though since I have way more than I need or will probably ever use. -
Well I'm finally on my way to joining the select group of popped vertebrae disk folks better known as HDX owners.
I've read through all 70+ pages of this thread following the highs and the lows. It's a shame HP tech support sucks so badly but the core reason why reading everything in here concreted my decision to purchase a HDX was that despite all the heartache people went through, the consensus was still the same, the HDX is an awesome bit of kit. If you can still love the machine after all that it must be on par with ambrosia.
I'm from Australia and to date we still only have two configurations available to us. And given that the computer market hasn't adjusted with the Aussie dollar (By this I refer to the current strength along side the US dollar. Where before it was $1AUD to $0.5US, it's now almost even. Alas the price differences between the respective countries still stay the same. If I could I would have purchased from HP US but no no no, they want to milk as much money out of you as they can by buying from HP Aus. So...) I figured I may as well source from overseas. As no other HP would sell to me I went, as most others in my situation do, to Ebay. Giving myself a $2000 AUD limit I got:
CPU: T8300 2.4 GHz
RAM: 2 GB
HD: 320 GB (Dual 160's I assume)
Screen: 20.1" WSXGA (Would have liked the full HD but beggars can't be choosers)
Video Card: Radeon HD 2600 XT
Drive: Lightscribe 8x (I don't own any Bluray or HD movies or media so I figured I'd wait for the Bluray writer to drop in price. I have externals so I'm not short on storage)
OS: Vista Home Premium 64 bit + SP1
Which came in at $1,730 US.
Question 1 Is that a decent deal? I've read about people getting them for 50% off and others using the $500 voucher and those lucky few sobs who won one... (Congrats regardless, awesome win.) But I wasn't lucky enough to score any of that so this was my last avenue. Regardless, if it's in working order I think I did well. After all my last Dell 5150 was $5,500...
I've read through the horror stories, as mentioned before. As such, I'll be looking for:
1) A Graphics cardAlthough from what I have seen the ATI models had no troubles.
2) Testing my webcam and TV tuner for recording. 30+ seconds of webcam record if I remember correctly to test.
3) Dead pixels
4) Quicklaunch buttons (Any word from HP concerning a "working" patch that allows users to actually "use" those buttons?)
Question 2 Anything else to add to that list? I think most of the problems were with the nVidia models. As it's SP1 I can't use the non-signed driver work around correct? That's if I need them at all.
Question 3 I've read about people wanting to upgrade their Graphics Cards, namely from the Radeon to the nVidia. There has been some umming and the mention that a new motherboard may be required. Has anyone actually done it? I'd like to extend the life of this lappy as it will be the only one I purchase for a while (Uni student.. And thus I had to sell a kidney to get the HDX) and putting a new GC in at a latter date would allow me to do so. Will I have a better chance dropping a new ATI series in when it comes out?
Question 4 I only got 2 gig of RAM as the two offers I was bidding on were 2.4 GHz 2 GB and 2.1 GHz and 4 GB. From a mathematical pricewise standpoint the 2.1/4 was the better deal but to upgrade to a 2.4 and sell the 2.1 for the sale price wasn't going to happen. So does anyone recommend a 4GB Notebook RAM kit? Lower price would be best (I've seen $72 and lower) but I'd like decent RAM while I'm at it.
Question 5 I've been looking at carry bags. The Ilugger is about as sexy as a cold naked Margaret Thatcher. The Dicota is nice but the only cheap place to get it (PC Connection) makes you jump through a hoop to get stuff internationally. Then there was one other, an eX-something that I can't quite recall. The Dicota was the only one I could see the inside off so I'm trying for that is the official HP one is no longer available. The actual question is are there any other alternatives? Any Aussie responses would be great as I'd rather not fork out any more in international shipping charges.
Well sorry for the long winded post, I'm just a wee bit excited about what's coming in the mail. I'd like to think it'll work out of the box but Murphy and his law seem to follow me a lot recently... That said it will be about 12-14 days before I get it so that hardest phase of the purchase has begun... The waiting.
So I look forward to entering this cramped lounge next time with an actual HDX.
Special thanks go out to:
2.0 (Encyclopaedic knowledge and never shy about answering a question. Hopefully a HP rep is reading these forums and hires you to direct the support team...)
asuhoru (Always good for a laugh. Glad your HDX worked out well for you mate.)
Tinman(Kudos for sticking to your guns. Living proof that persistence is key. Bloody shame you had to go through what you did though. Happy it worked out for you.) -
I'm thinking of buying an HDX here soon. I see that I just missed out on a $500 off coupon. Is the 4th of July deal going on right comparable or would it be better to wait for another coupon to come up? (and if so, how often are these coupons usually put out?) I am working offshore this entire summer and don't really need or want it until school starts back up for me in September. Because of this, I can wait awhile before ordering if you guys think it would be worth my wait and if there isn't much risk of it being discontinued or of the price going up. Thanks for any help.
-
That's it for the $400-$500 coupons for a good while. They only come out about twice a year give or take.
Keep your eye on this website in the future: http://hpwebsavings.com/
I just did a config of the same system specs I bought. The price isn't bad about a little over $300 more than I paid. But they threw in a free Blu-ray.
As for risk of discontinuation, the speculation remains high that they might. And if they introduce a new one expect to pay about $500-$1000 more. Worse still, they may let VoodooPC handle this unit (or I should say a 20" model while preserving the Pavilion line for general consumers, i.e. 12"-17") in which case the price will be sky high.
In any event, I'm glad I waited as long as I did (was waiting for an updated model with Centrino2/Montevina. But considering the price I paid, it just made economic sense to get this rather than wait for a new model that may never materialize or that will be priced a lot higher for minimal to small gains in performance. The other thing is the HP show in Berlin (Connect your World) in June showcased the entirety of HP's new line up. A new HDX was conspicuously missing. The month before at a show in Taiwan where many manufacturers were debuting new systems, HP showed off this current HDX.
Anyway, it's an awesome machine that just can't be appreciated in pictures and descriptions. If you get it now, you won't be disappointed provided that it suit your needs. It should actually exceed your needs though otherwise you might feel a bout of regret if a new model comes out with say, a built in carry handle. -
Glad I could be of some help. Congrats on your purchase. May it arrive in perfect condition as mine did. -
Now I see why HP only offers a rolling suitcase for it. -
I've used three different suitcases and believe me the best overally solution (though a bit of overkill is the HP rolling case for $97. If you want to use it as a backpack it is sweet. Great straps and can be totally hidden inside if you want to use it as a rolling suitcase. You'll have to play a bit with some foam rubber from any hobby store to pad the handle braces inside. It really has much more room inside than necessary but handy for throwing a jacket or poncho....Just My Humble Opinion, David
-
Dell also offers a 20 inch notebook case on their website, although its not a backpack or roller. Its best to be a fairly muscular guy if your going that route.
-
I've been lurking here but I finally got the HDX and I was curious. Actually I've had two come and go...first one had significant backlight bleed on the bottom, second got backlight bleed and dead pixels all over the middle of the lcd. Both times I've ordered the HD screen (1920 x 1200). Is this a common theme for those of you who purchased the higher resolution screen? I just placed an order for another one and the sales rep assured me that it could have been a bad batch...
-
Ok, here is the deal...just received an email through my company perks program. HDX with the following specs for $2187.99. Prices in parantheses are upgrades, not included in above price. Good deal or not?
Vista 64 Ultimate
3GB RAM (+100 for 4 gig)
T8100 2.1 GHz (+150 for T9300 2.50 GHz)
1600 x 1050 (+350 for 1900 x 1200)
8800 GTS
240 GB HD 5400rpm (+75 for 7200 rpm, +175 for 320 7200 rpm)
BLU-RAY DVD included
Microsoft Office Home/Student included
I already have one, but the wife commandeers it too much. I'm thinking of getting her one. -
Sucks! I remember someone mentioning they were making a specific case for the Dragon, anyone knows anything about that? If I remember well it was somebody who called HP and they told him that's the reason why you don't see the old case around... But then again on the phone they seem to make up a lot of stuff like that other recent "bull" rumor that the Dragon is off production...
In fact it would be kinda cool: a black Rolling case with the dragon design on... -
2.0: Have you any idea if anyone makes a Blu-Ray Writer Stand Alone unit for home entertainment (not for a PC) that is backward compatible, which also plays MPEG-4, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, MP3, along with the (more-or-less) standardized backward compatible Formats that include BD-RE, BD-ROM, DVD, HD DVD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, MP3, JPEG, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4Dolby Digital?
-
im thinking of ordering a HDX, is there any reason to wait for another model in the next month or some reason? thanx!
-
Hey there 2.0
That is a good long while for boot up. I did the clean install according to Orev's guide with the ABR program and things went smoothly except for losing the quicktouch eject button (a price I can live with and believe me I have tried to remedy it) and it cut the boot-to-login screen time to about 53 seconds. Not blazing quick but quick enough not to become annoyed.
Also regarding the case for the beast I bought one of the HP roller cases (really was the only good option) and it does have backpack straps enclosed in the top half above the roller wheels. They are not the best nor the most comfortable but will do. Just don't try to go hiking for too long.
I really only go from home to work with it and am thinking of getting a spare power brick for the other location. Brick is not an exaggeration for the size and weight of the thing. -
-
wwoods: which one is it you bought? As on their site, no bag accomodates 20", the only thing that fits is the sleeve (which seems nice btw)
-
From Sydney Australia here. This reputable online auction house
http://www.graysonline.com.au
has been clearing a lot of brand new HDX systems for HP Australia. There seems to be a variety of configurtions available almost everyday. Is this a sign HP are clearing the stock?
I got mine;
(NEW) HP Pavilion HDX9216TX notebook.
Intel Core 2 Duo T7800 (2.6GHz)
3GB RAM, 500GB HDD
20.1 WSXGA+ display
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
Integrated LAN, WLAN, TV tuner, audio, webcam.
for $A2500 delivered in about 3 days. The cardboard box was damaged and smelt of beer (maybe the warehouse guys had a party). System is all good only problem was the quicklaunch locking up problem which I sorted by following instructions on this site (ie powering down).
Let us know what case you managed to get and how much delivered to Australia -
-
As for padding, its fine, nice snug fit but with padding. There well made and I have lugged this already on a plane from Florida to California, carry-on of course. -
While we are discussing cases....I apologize if this is inappropriate for this list but if you are really set on the HP shoulder back pack for the Dragon, I have one I'm willing to sell. It is just a little too large for my purposes (I only need the Dicota model). It is a GREAT backpack model if you're into the backpack style, complete with HP medal logo. I have modified it with removable foam rubber so it is almost bullet proof. I am sure you could drop the whole pack with no damage. First class case all around, nicely padded hideable straps. Only had it two weeks. Will consider selling for $50 plus $15 for shipping. Contact me at [email protected]. I apolagize again but if you really want the out of production neat backpack this is it. Thanks for this great list for all us Dragonnites, David

Hi, why I'm glad to have found this forum. Hope one of you can help me.
1 week old owner of an HDX9160ea. Everything so far works fine besides the following issues:
1) I can't get any of the "media-console buttons", i.e. the touch-buttons above the the F-keys, to work. The ones to the left of the Fingerprint reader lights up in blue (but doesn't work anyway), the ones to the right are just, well, black and also nun-functioning. And the fingerprint reader doesn't work either.
The latter did work for the first couple of hours after I initially unpacked my HDX, but due to whatever reasons, I did a back to "factory default" procedure after these first hours (and no, I did not choose the microsoft settings but the correct hp one).
Besides the touch-buttons not working, I also don't have any finger-print shortcut on the desktop, nor in the control panel.
Help would be greatly appreciated.

So iv had my HDX for about a week now and... wow... just wow.... what an amazing computer. Despite having a dead pixel right out of the box(thats alright 1199P is HD enough for me), a defective speaker system (the sound was only coming out of the speakers on the bottom so I spent 2 hours on the phone with a really nice but dumb technician, in fact I ended up telling him how to fix my own computer lol , Going out and renting the only blu-ray disc that doesn't play on the HDX out of all of the blu-ray discs there are. Only to return the disc, THEN to find out all I needed to do was just update my freaking quick play system LOL.... Oh and experiencing the defective quicktouch buttons, through which I fixed using a driver someone recommended on here (thank you very much). Besides all that... this computer is really a work of art. It's really something out of this world. It's fast, it's got an amazing screen, amazing graphics, amazing everything. I'v been using it so much that it doesn't look large at all anymore. But then when I look at my old laptop, my old laptop looks like a freaking palm pilot or something, I can't get over how small normal computers in this house look... LOL anyway i'v been using it with Maya 8.5 (a program for making 3d things/animation)-something that may be useful when I start my major in engineering in 2 months, I also used it with Microsoft flight simulator X with maximum quality graphics-it has trouble running it so I went out and bought the extreme processor on ebay for 400 bucks, (not a bad deal due to the fact I can sell the 2.5 processor for nearly 300) and that's it for now but I can't wait to try out some other game/programs that can take advantage of the HDX. Lastly, thanks to all of you on here who provided insight and information on the HDX when I was looking at it, especially you 2.0.
THANKS,
bcbuse -
Shipping is damn fast on mine too. Check the shipping company and they said Guaranteed deliver on the 7th, and I paid for it on the 2nd.
As for the bag, I tried international with PC Connection and they didn't want to hear from me. I guess the effort of one bag was too much. So I've got a friend of mine who runs a computer business to nab me a Targus 20" for $70 flat so I'm happy. Should be here by tomorrow. I'll grab some photos of it and the HDX within as soon as I get them so you have an idea of what the Targus bag is like.
And now the waiting continues... -
hey, I see a bunch of you are looking for cases or sleeves for the HDX I found a case a few days back custom made for the HDX by waterfield designs. There's this creepy guy showing it off for his give away in this video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3418280746054937592&q=hdx+dragon&ei=tCZsSPjCI4KwrAL-z52UDw&hl=en
The site for the bag is http://www.sfbags.com/products/sleevecases/sleevecases.htm and the size for the HDX bag is 39-28. It's on the expensive side though ($55-$110 depending on how you customize it) but it looks like a nice durable(ballistic nylon) bag , and it's got a lot features/addons you can customize to your liking. (not to mention it's made in San Francisco and not China) -
I bought an iLugger bag. It does look damn dorky but it serves its purpose. Although I leave my laptop and work and hardly USE the ilugger mofo, when I do take my HDX behemoth home it sure is comfy in the bag.
I would offer tips on how to lower your price on a new HDX but i'm puking right now on how much I spent. YEAH I didn't even use coupons!

Sup Big Poppa,
No, theres no side to side movement. It slides into either compartment quite well and snug. If you'd like, when I go back to work on Friday, I can take some pics of the Mighty Behemoth inside the iLugger for you and all this thread to see!?
I recommend it. When i bought it, there wasn't really many choices out there and I did look. On this thread I see now a bunch of different options for us HDX users. Mine serves its purpose and its actually quite durable. I ain't about spending 20 bucks for a piece of **** bag either. I spent 3k+ for my fatgirl and wasn't about to put her into some piece of crap bag, too.
Aloha -
can't wait for the pix! -
Greeting from the UK.
I bought my HDX (2.5 & 500G) a few weeks ago. The day after I got it the PS went bang.
Took it back to the store & they gave me the one that had been running the demo for two weeks!
Other than that, and the fact that I can't seem to upgrade to Ultimate (couldn't buy machine with XP) it has been very fine indeed, I've had a few toshs and hp's over the years, but this really is the mutts nuts.
So, having read most of the 74 pages on this thread I have a couple of questions which I hope one/some of you chaps can throw some light on.
Is HP really packing this in? I ask because I'm seriously thinking of getting another. Also, we don't get the customisable version here (though the 9320 spec is pretty good), do you think I could order off the HP USA site? I ask as some USA sites will only accept USA orders. -
As for the FP reader, look in your start menu under digital persona personal. That's the finger print reader's software.
If that's not listed there then it wasn't installed in which case you'll have to install it. Go to your swsetup folder and install the driver first. It's listed under folder named drivers\misc3. It's called ATMinInstall. Run that then reboot. The install the software found under folder DPFPR. run setup. You should be in business thereafter. (assuming of course you got the panel to light up again.)
IF you get the panel to light up but nothing seems to work, reinstall its driver found in swsetup under folder SP38171. If that folder isn't there you can download that file off HP's website. Or alternatively, you may have the folder QTOUCH in swsetup. If you do, go to the "64" folder and run setup.
Worse case scenario is that the touch panel's cable came out of its connector. It is easy to get to but requires removal of the keyboard. Keyboard is fasted by 7 screws plus sticky tape. Job requires removal of the TV Tuner cover and both harddrives. You'll see screw holes label by a keyboard symbol. You can download the service manual off HP's website. It's a PDF file that's well written. I used it to take apart my HDXs so that I could apply arctic silver 5 thermal compound on the CPU and GPU. -
BTW, it was BlackKnight who gave us the QTouch panel fix. Props.
I'm lovin' the HDX. And you're right, it doesn't seem so big anymore. -
As for buying off the US website, no dice. Only accepts US addy. -
That's a tall order. Nothing general consumer level yet AFAIK. I'll check pro-sumer level. But that'll be beaucoup bucks. That would be an authoring unit. -
-
Thanks 2.0 I had rather thought it was a US only scenario...looks like I'll have to settle for the UK one size fits all spec!
-
It looks like I may need to replace my Sony CD player CDP991. After a couple if years in storage (while remodeling my house) I hooked it up yesterday. It is skipping and dropping out even after running a cleaning disc with brushers. It is acting a bit erratic, at times displaying file information and not. I thought I may as well get an all in one unit. You probably would not recommend an all-in-one unit. Maybe it would not offer what my (old) Sony CDP991 features such as Pulse High Density Linear Converter, Direct Digital Sync, Custom File, and Remote controlled Line out Phone Level.
I have not been in the market for such a long time. What my deck offers might now be elementary and that much more is in today's CD players. Upon a brief search it became apparant that my order would be restricted to Sony's BDP-S300, BDP-S500, and the soon to be released BDP-S350, as well as Samsung's BD-P1500. Samsung's handles even less formats than Sony's. the soon-to-be released Sony BDP-350 may not play back MP3's.
Let me know what you think.
Happy 4th! -
By the way I start suspecting it isn't true that HP is making a case specifically for the HDX and that we share part guilt of spreading the rumor. We should just start inquiring more seriously, since they have been saying it for a while and everywhere I read of it, it just never seems to come from a direct source.
Anyone knows how to figure that out once for all? -
Hello I am Roberto.
I purchased yesterday a hdx 9280el t8100 +4 gig of ram + 8800gts,
The first thing I did and 'do a test with 3dmark 2006 and with bad surprise I did 4300 points! Why?
