I can concur on the Rocketfish enclosures. Small, light, and work great with eSATA.

Just picked up a bunch on ebay, in original box with all original accessories including the leather case, for $3 each. Needless to say, my external storage needs are met for the near future! :D

OK, I just got my Intel 5300 AGN card today. Installed it and it's working great. I even got it where I took the old card out and the wi-fi button controls just the bluetooth. It works great. So if anyone is thinking of switching out their old wi-fi card for a newer one, I say go for it :D

Hey everyone. I am wondering about some windows updates (working on a friend's computer). I usually do all the updates, critical and optional, but I'm wondering about installing the following optional updates:

    MS .NET framework 1.1
MS .NET framwork 3.5 (ya i know, i don't know why they just don't have one listed and as cumulative, but anyway)
    and
MS Smart Card cryptographic bla bla bla

    These are through windows updates.

Wondering if these are just for programmers or not. I would rather not have them clutter or slow down the computer if they are not needed. Reading the technical info about em doesn't make sense...so wondering if they are useful for anything practical or not.

    Thanks.

.NET framework 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 are an integral part of Windows 7 (see this: http://www.blogsdna.com/4171/how-to-completely-uninstall-net-framework-on-windows-7.htm ). I don't remember any such updates being offered for Win7 (it is supposed to have shipped with the latest aka sp1/sp2 versions etc.). In the future we will have to install .NET framework 4 for apps needing it (currently still in B2).

thanks kindheart. i should mention it's windows xp. so same question stands.

do you know if they are necessary in vista, btw?

what kind of apps need it to run for win7? are there apps in xp or vista that need it (after all it is listed as optional in xp at least)?

    thanks.

These are runtimes for a very large number of applications on offer today, much like the Visual C++ 2005/2008 runtimes are. Most apps needing them will also ask you to install the corresponding .NET redistributables, if they are not already installed on your machine. Without these components, any apps relying on them will fail to run.

i see. so could it hurt to just install them on the xp machine. after all they are through windows updates?

mainly, i'm wondering if it will slow down the computer? create startup entries or services that would hog precious little resources on this slightly older laptop?

They won't harm (as you see Microsoft is now making them part of its newest OS). They are for XP and higher, so you should be OK (Windows Update only offers you updates compatible with your OS). They shouldn't slow down your machine and will only be loaded on startup if you have startup programs requiring them.
Only temporarily/on the next boot: you might see mscorsvw process(es) in your Task Manager (mscorsvw.exe and mscorsvw.exe*32 on a 64-bit system). This can be considered the completion of the setup; see this: http://blogs.msdn.com/davidnotario/archive/2005/04/27/412838.aspx

Edit: They will also take around 100-300MB of your disk space, depending on the version(s) you install. You need all versions if you have apps needing them, i.e., 3.5 cannot work for apps requiring 2.0.

As I said, many apps, very well known such as Nero, and less popular ones such as those listed at http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/dotnet.html, rely on it; it's pretty much like Java...

thanks, ya i guess the reason i hesitate is that friends parents i'm helping clean or fix the laptop for do not go on any sites, etc. they are really old. checked and no viruses or anything but is was slow as hell. i remember it happened coincidentally perhaps after a bunch of windows updates recently that i also did, etc.

nonetheless, i did a clean install and it's flying. i'll probably leave it that way for a month and see how it goes. i figure if you say an application would prompt if it needed it, then that's good, if it ever came to be. thanks.

when you installed 2010, did you do a complete install of 2007 first, or did you just install the 2010 beta right over the existing office? like did it keep all your email settings, contacts, etc etc

I ask only because I had problems with the previous office 2010 beta "Mondo" release, it was extremely buggy, and so buggy that I couldn't even completely uninstall it to reinstall 2007 that I had to reformat the drive and reinstall the OS...

Uninstall any previous 2007 or 2010 TP you might have before installing this one. All your Outlook settings will be kept and picked by the new 2010 B2 despite the uninstall. Note that you can now have a proper 64-bit Office suite unlike Office 2007 which was only in 32-bit.

The problems you are describing are due to non-official/non-public Microsoft releases that people download via torrents. Office 2010 official TP had no such problems.

oh the batteries from hp, btw seem great! i only had a chance to test 1 normally and that one is able to actually hold a charge (despite it being dead apparently upon arrival) for 1 hour 45 minutes consistently on high performance and full brightness working on web/documents stuff the whole time until it got to 5% and hibernated. Currently keeping it mostly plugged in. Will report on other one in a couple days or so.

Do you have CPU-Z or something that you can verify your clock speed when on High Performance and on battery?

I'm curious if you are running at full clock speed when on battery. I mentioned earlier that I cannot get my HDX to run at 2.8Ghz, solid, when on high performance and running on battery. When I plug in AC it does, but not on battery.

Oh ok cool. I thought something broke in the GPU or something. Hmm I'm using them for storage right now. When I get a server and transfer all my data I figure I can try the os thing on them, but when I reformatted the Seagates the Quickdock didn't work on them either.

Yea I did XP 32 bit Vista Ultimate 64 bit, then XP 32 bit Vista Ultimate 64 bit Windows 7 32 bit, now it's just Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Glad to hear it works well for you. Just in case, can you and/or anyone recommend the best/cheapest place to get a legit XP still?

I wished it was 7200rpm but I'd like it as well. Please do let us know if it can be made to fit in there, how to do so, and that it actually works. Someone in here said it's only been verified to take 600-700GB hard drives I believe.

It's not the capacity of the HDD, it's the form factor height. If they ever get around to making a 9.5mm H, 2.5" HDD @ 1TB cap, it'll fit right in. I figure it's another 6 months to a year before they do. We're at 640GB now.

7200 RPM likely won't make that much of a difference at these densities. a 640GB @5400 is as fast if not slightly faster than a 500GB @7200 RPMs. So you might not see a 1TB @ 7200 RPMs in notebook size for a while.

Yep, just download and install it. Make sure you get the correct bit-version (32 or 64). Then just run it. The main tab that shows up (CPU) shows a "Core Speed" value. This is (supposedly) the real speed your CPU is running. Because of things like SpeedStep and other power saving functions, this may show LOW until you run or do somthing that pushes the CPU past 25%, then that Core Speed value might bump up to full speed.

Normally, I like my systems to run at full speed all the time. Despite what others say that SpeedStep, etc., don't effect performance, I disagree. When a system is running in low-speed mode, merely opening windows and doing UI stuff is markedly slower, since it's not enough to signal the CPU to high speed mode. I notice it, and don't like it. I don't spend lots of $$$ on the fastest of everything to run at slow-mode!! :)

Let us know what you find out (or anyone else that already has CPU-Z installed).

    Thanks!

Hum... how did you come across this link? I check the site almost everyday and have not seen this driver. I then went to the site just now and it still shows 186 if you go through the menus.
    http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
My guess is this is a version they are getting ready to release. It does not say BETA but it also does not say WHQL like 186 does. Just a warning for those that do not realize this does not seem to be officially released yet.
I am still going to try it though. I am adventurous like that.

I do like the release notes:

    New in this release:

    * Adds GPU-acceleration for smoother online HD videos with the new Adobe Flash 10.1 beta. Learn more here.
    * Adds support for DirectCompute with Windows 7.
    * Adds support for OpenGL 3.2.
    * Adds support for OpenCL 1.0 (Open Computing Language).
    * Adds support for CUDA Toolkit 3.0 features and performance enhancements. See CUDA Zone for more details.
    * Adds SLI and multi-GPU support for many top new gaming titles including Borderlands, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, FIFA Soccer 10, and more.
    * Includes numerous bug fixes including improved performance for Need for Speed: Shift. Refer to the release notes on the documentation tab for information about the key bug fixes in this release.
    * Installs NVIDIA PhysX System Software v9.09.0814.

I look forward to the NFS performance boost. It is definitely needed. I will see if there is a noticeable improvement tonight.

Sorry, by official, I meant straight from nVidia, with no modded inf's. They were reported as BETA, but not listed as such on the site. I found out about them from Laptopvideo2go.com, by the way.

Someone else in our gaming forum reported they have been submitted for WHQL cert, so hopefully you're right.

For those thinking about using a fat drive, thicker than the standard drive, keep in mind that the drive(s) require cooling. A cooked drive is a dead drive!

For properly working bass\treble sensors right before uninstalling standard sound drivers (with or without IDT, but I strongly recommend 'with') you must turn off your ethernet card (wifi, wire or whatever you have). After you uninstalled everything as listed above you must downloadl IDT STAC9271 - Vista 32-bit and 64-bit - v6.10.5607.0 B (SP40438), unpack it and set every .exe file in WDM\Vista, HDQFE\SRVRTEM and HDQFE\SRVSP1 folders as compatible with vista OS (incl setup.exe)

If that's the case, then our HDDs in the Dragons would be cooked by now already. Adding the 12.5mm drives will be the same as adding the 9.5mm drives, sans the issue of them fitting the HDD bays that are on the Dragon. I THINK they will fit without the HDD caddy that you would normally use and even then they would miss interfering with the HDD bay cover by .2 or .3mm.

Thats what i think after my measuring. And i have 2 WD Scorpio Black 320GB in my HDX and they are 33 °C (91 °F) and if i do a HD-benchmark 42 °C (108 °F). The WD Scorpio Blue is just a 5200 RPM drive, so i think everything will be ok.

And remember: To cool is also not the best for HD's.

Hey Lan, sure enough, i tried cpu-z (portable version) 64 bit, and when plugged in, i'm at a hair under 2100Mhz (i have the stock t-whatever processor) at 10.5 x multiplier. this is the max megahertz for my processor i guess.

when i unplug it, and yes i tried restarting the program and in midstream, etc.

the most i get is 8x multiplier at a hair under 1600meghertz or whatver.

so the effect, and how i tried to test it under load...played back a 1080P video file. it's perfect when plugged in. it's blocky, skips bigtime and unplayable for viewing purposes.

i'm disappointed in a way now. if i ever wanted to do any intensive things such as watch a hd movie or what not (i'm sure i would normally plug it in)...but it's not nice that i can only have 1.6 gig processor effective by being on battery and not the 2.1 by being plugged in. again i'm in high performance mode.

Now i checked the advanced power setting within high performance mode and see that the processor minimum power state for plugged in is 100% (which seems to actually not be true, because when plugged in i noticed it stepped down) and for battery it's 5%, so i switched battery min. processor state to 100%, but it still does the same thing and makes no difference (unless i have to restart for this change to take effect...which i have not tried yet).

mind you when i stated 1.6 gig speed that was like here or there. it usually never went above a hair under 1.2 gig.

i'm surprised i never read on someone mentioning this or noticing this before lan pointed it out.

2, have you pointed this out or commented about it in the last year or so? can you try cpu-z as well?

NOTE: to make sure that cpu-z was not somehow affecting things, as when i start hardware monitor when the fans are already medium/high and it switches to low for some reason the instant i start it.....i shut down cpu-z, but i was still not able to playback the 1080P vid without it freezing, when on battery, and it plays perfectly when plugged in...not one hitch.

... na I just got a job for you!
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOGUD7MylQA
1.This you must run full screen in HD. (Sound nice and loud!)
2.When you are careful to swallow your fine HDX approximately 2x.
3.An the video does not lie. That is absolutely without any errors. (apart from the end)
4.Nun you all. Entertainment, GPU-Z Test option (log to file) and the knowledge .... oooooooh RickiBerlin is right ;)

but not the PM you again-checking

to HW Monitor I write anything, everything is the way I always describe it and you will not want to read more. The average temperature brought this under load at about 10 C. But an end to it. In my case, both systems are running perfectly.

All of you here for a great enrichment of my life. Thanks !!!!!! :)

CPU-Z does not affect the fan controller or else.
The programs are known to me only to HW Monitor and 3DMark06.
The latter change several energy settings of the active profile.
