Yes, your old 'Notebook Deity' motto (above your pic) was ways better than your current one: 'Brand New 2nd Hand'! :)

Yes (again), you might be pointing to Aslan in my current avatar pic (and who Aslan is in C.S. Louis symbology). Well, that's not for me.

If the BIOS updater doesn't effect the GPU BIOS, wouldn't that mean an MXM GPU upgrade wouldn't be effected by the BIOS because it depends on its own? Any thoughts?

Hey man. Whats the newest and best 3D driver that works fully with which regular NVIDIA GPU driver?

Also people going to see Avatar said the 3D Glasses are all black.. is that a completely different kind of 3D?

These are polarized glasses, not anaglyphs. NVIDIA 3D Vision (not Discovery) uses a third type of 3D glass technology known as active shutter glasses (have a battery that needs to be recharged every 40 hours or so via usb).

I have installed win7 ultimate on my hdx 9400, and tried four sound drivers, but still have some problems:
1.Win7 default sound driver: dreadful sound
2.Driver from Windows update: no tremble and bass function
3.hdx official vista driver 6.10.5607: Everything works but periodly comes out a sound like scratching.
4.the new idt driver for other hp models such as hdx 16: no sound at all.

Can someone offer a better driver, or have some tips on solving this scratching problem, that would be a great thanks!
    :)

I thought you said you could use regular red/cyan/blue glasses..don't remember them ever needing a battery. Is the 3d technology used by Avatar different or just the glasses? I guess what I'm wonder is when Avatar comes to Blu Ray will it be able to be used with the 3DVision or will it need something else entirely different you think?

The red/cyan glasses are for NVIDIA 3D Vision Discover, not for NVIDIA 3D Vision. 3D Blu-ray titles, so far, use anaglyph technology (i.e., R and L images are pre-mixed, so you cannot use NVIDIA 3D Vision); the best being the green/magenta by Trioscopics. Avatar will most probably follow this, as producers always want their title to run on all possible hardware/TVs.

It's a bit clearer now thanks. Which then can apply to the HDX and which can be run simultaneously? I didn't know there were different kinds of 3D Visions. You said the latest 3D Vision (which kind I don't know) would make you lose stereo if I remember correctly?

I am finally joining the SSD bandwagon. I found a deal I could not pass up. I was going to wait for tax time until I saw this deal: 120GB OCZ Vertex for ($369 + $14.00 S&H) – ($30 rebate + $25 First time use of eBillme as payment method) = total of $328. :wideeyed: That is cheaper then when they came out.

I bought it from www.Comp-U-Plus.com. ( http://www.compuplus.com/Drives-sto...-SATA-2-1035602.html?t=ssd&track=searchViewed) I could not believe the price when I saw it. I scooped it up as soon as I saw it and called (And E-mail to get a hard copy) there customer service to verify that it was in stock. They informed me that it was and I currently have a tracking number that says it will be here on the 24th.
Funny thing is 3 hours after I bought it they changed the price to $469!! lol I was so worried that they were not going to honor the price I got it for, it was obviously an oversight.

Looks like I will be busy Christmas day. This will be my first clean install of Win 7 on my Dragon. I have installed it on all my comps and many customers’ computers. But as this community knows it is not the same. Luckily I am prepared though. I have bookmarked all the Win 7 install threads in this forum as they were posted in preparation. I have looked them over and combined them, along with my experience of a clean install of Vista on the Dragon, and all the latest drivers into what I believe will be the most up-to-date process.

Once I have confirmed this and have it working I will post a step–by-step of my results.

    Hi everyone,

Just a small question about GPU thermal dissipation:
Do you think it's better to use thermal pads or thermal paste (arctic silver ceramic for example)......

Have you some advices ? Quantity to use , etc....

    Thanks a lot.

Could either be your Audio driver or your HP software (Quick Launch, QuickTouch, QuickPlay).

What driver are you using for the sound, and also, what version of the HP software are you using?? Chances are if you change one or all of these to the correct versions, that will resolve your issue.

Hello everyone, been reading through many pages of posts but am stuck... I need some advice with my HDX. (Sorry if already asked).
I bought an HDX9200 CTO in Feb 2008. Extreme processor, 3GB ddr2 ram, 1920x1200 resolution screen, 512mb Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTS and 7200rpm 240gb HD along with the Blu-Ray option.

I just upgraded to WIndows 7 and the 64 bit version.

Works fine but want to upgrade memory and possibly Video card and hard drive.

What is the MAX amt of memory the board will support and is there an upgraded video card...

That is all and thanks for any and all replies....

    Tony..............

Newegg had the same 120GB Vertex for $309, shipped free, on Dec 21st. $100 coupon code plus $30 mail in rebate. Deal is dead now, of course. Merry Christmas. :D

FWIW, I also have the 120GB Vertex in my Dragon. Apart from my X9000, it's the best thing I've added! ;)

The maximum memory thus far tested has been 8GBs of DDR2 memory, 200 pins, 667mhz. The GSkills being sold on Newegg and Ebay are most suggested because they're fast and affordable. I have them and they work well.

As far as GPU someone came in here and said their friend upgraded the GPU to I think an NVIDIA 9800 (taken out of an Alienware I think it was?), BUT he never provided any verification for us, and then disappeared. In light of his news, an NVIDIA 280 upgrade was attempted by 2.0. He found it had to be modded, saw that it booted and with different drivers it read the card, but he got blurry visuals. He then sold it after 3 days of trying to get it working. It has been stated that one that would more likely work would be an HP branded NVIDIA 3700, but that has been discouraged for various reasons, only to be attempted if you realize it may not work and would need modding.

One thing I noted a page or two behind this one is that it seems because the BIOS updater doesn't do anything to the GPU Video BIOS that the card may likely depends on its own BIOS and not the motherboards BIOS..hence may be more likely to work.. if you want to try it know HP deliberately locked both the CPU and GPU from being able to be upgraded..but at the same time, it doesn't mean it can't be done at all or cannot be attempted. That decision would be up to the individual and how badly they'd like to see an upgrade and if they're willing and able to do the upgrade or know someone who does with all that in mind. Bottom line.. it was concluded for different reasons that MXM GPU upgrades can be hit or miss.

i guess it's moot cuz it's dead but....it was then 100 off of the 309? making it 209-30 rebate? i would've bit that one. otherwise, ya still a bit on the expensive side. will be my first major purchase as soon as price get's in the low 200's. i'd love to go from a t8100 to anything else, but i'm not savvy nor feel comfortable doing the mod, even with instructions.

anyone live in the indiana area, that could give a girl a hand :p

Yes, it means that MXM upgrade is a bust. Without ability to mod BIOS on the mobo for GPU name, frequency & voltage, it can't be done. Let alone the necessary physical mods required just to make standard MXM cards fit.

One can only go from Radeon 2600XT to 8800M GTS (made for HP version).

Where was what tested, the memory? Several people on the forum have and are using 8GBs of memory, like I am right now. Free flash drive? Hmm, I guess it's a holiday deal then? If you get that sounds like a nice deal.

For anyone who has the Intel 5300 Wifi card. I got it in the mail today and put it in the empty Mini PCI slot next to where the other Wifi AGN card is. What do I do now? Does it automatically detect and use the 5300 Wifi card over the AGN one? Do I need to manually change it so it only uses that one and disable the AGN one? Are there any recommended settings I need to change? Any suggestions or directions welcomed.

The driver for the 4965 works with the 5300.

So, go to control panel/ device manager and disable the 4965. I believe the HP wireless assistant can also be used to disable the 4965.

BTW, did you switch over the antenna wires (grey/black/white) to the 5300? There are numbers on the antenna wires. Match those to the numbers next to the mini coax plugs on the 5300.

Since the wifi button on the touch panel can only controls the wifi card in slot1, use Windows key +X to enable or disable wifi. Or you can enable/disable 5300 using device manager.

    Have fun!

    2 out.

Thermal paste is better. Small drop spread really thin with a razor. I'm using Arctic Silver 5 but Arctic Ceramique is just as good. I use that (Ceramique) for AMD CPUs since they run so hot.

I switched the wires, but didn't disable the other AGN card.. I couldn't turn the WIFI on via Windows X.. Hmm.. It says it's working properly, and the driver is the latest one from Intel for the 5300. I'll try to disable the AGN card, is there anything settings wise I need to do to get the 5300 to work? Yea I did the antenna thingy to the corresponding numbers. I'll try this again.

bah.. I can't get this to work..and now my regular wifi card doesn't work.. So I'm having to do this on my pocket pc. This sucks. Lol. it shows the devices as recognized, working..before only the agn card could connect and see networks, the 5300 card couldn't do jack. now neither see networks BUT the agn says its receiving packets..so I don't know what's up.. maybe I pulled the antenna out of something? I really hope its accessible..:/

EDIT: Thank GOD for system restore.. Should I try this again...? :0

EDIT: Tried again.. Still doesn't work. It won't find any networks, and when I put in a manual IP it won't retain the ip address of the router/gateway.. Hmm. I hope this doesn't have anything to do with having the F35 BIOS. I'm using a Dlink DIR-615 Wireless N router.. So I don't know what the problem is, or how to get this working..

    Thanks for your advice.
I'am already using Arctic Silver Ceramique but i think i have drop too much paste on the GPU (82°C in full load).

What about memory chips ? The same thing ? A small drop of paste?

    Thanks a lot

Make sure to buy the single 4GB piece instead of the 2 x 4GB kit at Newegg. $114.99 each with free shipping. They are the DDR2-800, but that is fine. They will run at 667. CHEAP!!!! (OK, STEAL, really!) Oh, and you get a FREE 8GB USB Flash drive!!!

    Hi there,

I just got a WD My Book Studio Edition II 2 TB external disc and connecting it through a Thermaltake eSATA cable to my HDX 9288 I get about 29 MB/s of average reading speed (as shown by HD Tune). Is that correct or is it running too slow? I'm on Windows 7 RTM and even tried installing the separated Intel Matrix Storage Drivers to see if it would help, but I think it did't.

Also, in the old preinstalled Vista, there was a Silicon ATA or something icon in the Control Panel. Also there were the installable drivers in the C:\source (or something) hidden folder, but I don't happen to have them around anymore.

If anyone can comment on the speed I'm getting through eSATA and also post those installable drivers I'd be very glad.

Here is the image for the WD My Book benchmark:

And here for one of the two 250 GB built in drives:

PS: It's been too long since I've been in this forum but, I read in HP's page that they won't support Windows 7 drivers for our models (only HDX 16 & 18). Is that true?

"....un-buries his head from his work desk...."

Ok, Here is what I did when i installed my 5300...

I installed it in the empty slot, powered on the Dragon, and let the drivers find it, as I had the updated drivers from Intel for the 4965. It worked and it was broadcasting, but just to be sure i turned off the 4965 using the wireless button.

After i verified that it was working and not interfering with the 4965, I turned the Dragon off and removed the 4965. Then I powered it back up and it has been working ever since.

I can turn it on and off using Windows Key + X (the wireless button only works for Bluetooth, which is fine by me as I don't use it all the time.) and the speed and range is great compared to the 4965, especially the 5.0Ghz range. I am using a Netgear WNDR3700 router.

It sounds like you are doing everything right, so I don't know why it's not working.

Happy Holidays to all my fellow Dragon owners. I have to dive back into my work now, as I have 3 notebooks, 3 PCs and 4 PSPs in various states of rebuild/repair. So my reply will prob be a page or two behind. Take care everyone.

that looks too damn slow. that 2tb thing i think is actually 1 drive in their or two? either way, i think all those book thises and thatses use slow drives. better to buy a separate drive and a separate enclosure. :(

It's 2 drives; each one of 1 TB which you can configure as RAID 1 or RAID 0 (as I currently have).

By turned off do you mean disabled? If so, wouldn't that also disable Bluetooth?

How did you verify that it was working and didn't interfere with the other card? By removing the 4965 don't you lose Bluetooth?

I'm thinking there's something wrong with the card because no matter what I do it just doesn't work.. I don't know what else to do.. It SAYS its working, no conflicts, I have the intel 5300 drivers. I tried disabling the original card, I tried just lowering all the stuff on the original card, but no matter what it doesn't find networks, and won't retain the IP address of the router/gateway when I set it to have a manual IP..

Me neither.. I'm going to try to order from the doods that 2.0 ordered from. The guys I bought it from had it in a bubble wrap which didn't seem to provide much protection via transit. Merry Christmas/Holiday and Happy New Years to you and everyone else.

No, you will not loose bluetooth. I removed my 4965 and installed the 5300 in the other slot. The wireless button now controls just the bluetooth.

Yes, I disabled it by pressing the Wireless QuickTouch button. Yes, you do lose Bluetooth when you do that, but I figured that I was just testing the wireless signal for the new card. Losing Bluetooth for this test wasn't an issue.

Once I disabled the 4965, I saw that i had a wireless signal from the new card, so I connected to my router using the new card and it worked (Also, I should say that i have a Wireless radar gadget that i use for Windows 7. It tells me what networks are in my area and where in relation to my laptop. If you have multiple wireless cards, it lets you choose which one you want it to use for the radar. Also, you can run multiple instances, so in theory, you can have a radar for every wireless card in your system. Hmmm, now I am intrigued lol). Then i ran a speed test to see if I was losing any speed with this card. Once I verified that I wasn't, I went to some of my fav sites. All of that went smoothly. And no, The bluetooth is a separate module in the Dragon, but the on/off function for the bluetooth is tied to the on/off function for the wireless (Can't blame HP completely, as Dell does that too. Weird ). This is only true for the 4965, though. As now, my wireless button only controls my bluetooth now. I can turn the wireless on and off using the Windows Key + X (BTW, thanks for showing me that trick :D ).

I agree, you must have gotten a bad card, or it may not have been pulled from an HP or a Dell laptop. That's what 2.0 and others recommended that you look for when you are looking to buy the Intel 5300.

Here is the auction I got mine from...
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300358988758&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
They shipped mine in a bubble-wrap padded envelope, and I have to admit I was a little concerned that it might be damaged during shipping, but it was fine and it works great. Sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble with your card. Hopefully this will help get you to the promise land of better wireless connectivity with your Dragon :D

Wireless radar gadget? Thanks for explaining what you did and how.

Yea that's actually the same exact one I bought it from :) I saw the packaging and also thought that..I'm thinking that may have been the problem, having been piled on from thousands of other Christmas shipments.. It spent an extra 5 days in the post office as well because of the overload of packages for the holidays. He said he'd be willing to send a replacement, so we'll see what happens I guess. Thanks for the feedback man. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you.

Recently I upgraded my HP HDX OS from Vista Ultimate 64 bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I (foolishly) thought all the drivers I used in Vista would work in 7 but they don't, at least the ones I've tried.
I came here (the best place I know for HP HDX information on the net ;) to ask for help. I suspect someone has asked this already and someone must have answered, but I can't look through almost 900 pages of posts. Perhaps someone can point me in the right way. I would really appreciate it. Any information for Windows 7 64 bit would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Ok, which drivers didn't work? Windows 7 x64 works great on the Dragon, as more than a few of us here are running it without issues. For me, I used the drivers that are on the HP website for my model (hdx9494nr) under the Windows Vista x64 section.

Also, which HDX Dragon are you using, and which version of Windows 7 are you trying to install??

    Hey Everyone,

Got a quick question, searches didn't bring any results.

I'm trying to hook up my wii to my 9010nr, and I'd also like to watch VHS tapes as well. So I've got the Wii plugged into a vcr, and I've got the VCR hooked into my HDX via a F-type connector (coax) to PAL converter, so it plugs into the back of my 9010nr. The issue comes when I try to scan for channels using Windows Media Center, it doesn't find any. I tried a dvd player I had laying around with the same result.

What I did find in my searches was that the HDX has a hybrid tv tuner and Wikipedia says that hybrid tuners can not operate on digital and analog at the same time. So maybe I need to switch my tuner to recieve analog signals, but I haven't been able to find a method for doing that.

I've got windows 7, and I never used the OS that came with it. I installed windows 7 immediately, which I currently regret, due to all driver issues
I had, but have now resolved.

    Thanks!
    -Rob
