Are any notebook companies talking about Stereoscopic? I've been meaning to ask what the newest update is with 3D currently? I bought the Cyan glasses but haven't tried the 3d yet. A friend of mine tried it but couldn't seem to get it to work even though he had the right GPU. Like what are the best drivers to use now if I may ask?
-
-
ya i saw it in the news a few days ago. i thought that's what prompted you to ask, seeing it in the last few days or reading it. they had a bit of a segment on 2 notebook manufacturers...i cannot recall the details.
-
Wow 65GBs? I think I'm going to skip imaging my drive as it currently is and just image it with a fresh Vista cto install with drivers and that's it just in case something happens to my recovery dvds. But I'm going to back them up with Nero as well just in case. What size of SSD you going to get? I'm thinking I'd like to do the same.. Maybe I'll just get the DV8 and switch it's 250GB SSD for mine
The lowest price I see them for is like around 700-1000 bucks. Or I guess I could do a 120GB but it seems like it would get filled up quick.. I dunno. Ghost seems pretty good. Dell used it on the Inspiron laptops.. just make sure you don't do it with anything plugged into the USB port while you restore.. Learned that the hard way..
-
I THOUGHT I saw that somewhere but wasn't sure and also can't recall the details either. Kindheart is the 3D guy in here so I figured he'd know what's going on. All I know is ANYTHING is better than the IMAX 1940s goggles they make you wear in the theaters and won't let you keep after spending 500,000.000 to watch Avatar and have some microwaved chicken tenders. Those are the most uncomfortable things I've ever worn before in terms of face accessories, if it can be called that. I had a baseball hat on and had to point it to outer space for the glasses to barely fit, then had to take it off entirely because I think it takes up like 3/4th of your head. The ones that are going to come with the 3D TVs like the one that won the Cnet CES award looks pretty cool. -

If additional HDX with you then a WSXGA +
But since the i7, HDX is really no longer purchase recommended.
Except for very low price and you do not need i7 Power + new GPU power.
But you know yourself.
I see at the moment no need for more power.
Not even Windows 7 comes into question for me. And this, although I have here are two Windows 7 Professional for. (conveniently acquired)
My system runs perfectly with Vista.
Partitioning had even created a W7 partition. But without SSD, there is simply no reason for W7.
Maybe once I install it in addition .... -
Yes, not as loud as the previous models (17") but louder than just about any average lappy and certain louder then the HDX.
LOL. Yeah, you say that now...
That's one thing I always disliked about Sager and the Sager's I've owned. ain't pretty to look at. HDX... in fact the Dell's and HP's I've own were always good looking.
For video editing, or any CPU intensive tasks, i7 beats the x9000 and any Penryn processor of the Santa Rosa Platform. However, what you're missing in the equation is price. You would go out an pay $500+ for an X9000, plus cost of installation when you can get an i7 notebook for ~$1000+.
Now you're looking at getting a $4000+ notebook when $2000 will get you a much more powerful desktop. Unless you REALLY need that power to be portable, what accounts for the extra $$$$ you'd be paying for the Clevo?
But if loot is no object, economics if moot. We're all allowed our preferences.
Internal options are pretty much the same for all the Clevo rebranders. XoticPc is one of the best resellers out there. Provide excellent support and very active with the Sager/clevo community.
Take a peak in the Sager section of the forum. Especially look at the Clevo guide. Have a chat with Justin and Gophn. They'll point you in the right direction and fill you in on what to look out for. -
Didn't forget about you. Just working behind the scenes to get to the bottom of this and will give you the details of the findings and solution.

Dominick_7, I was wrong, it wasn't 65GB, its actually 65.5GB....
I've never really used Ghost before. I was never a fan of the previous versions of Ghost. Whenever I needed to redo my drive, I would start from scratch. Usually it would be on a weekend so it wouldn't interfere with work. My boss uses Ghost and he really likes it.
Regarding the SSD, 120GB is probably as high as I am going to go for now. I do intend on purchasing an HP Media Server as well so some of my expenses will be diverted there. With my secondary hard drive and all of the other external drives+incoming Media Server, I figured it should be more than enough. I actually have quite a bit of room on both drives and that's basically after installing every software I use.
I primarily use my HDX for stock charts/investment work. I use TradeStation ( 2.0 probably knows what that is). Its stock charting/analytical software.
With the HDX, I can to a certain extent, take my work when I travel (which I do frequently). Besides some basic photo-editing, I don't really have graphic-intensive work. The only "downside" is that Tradestation is CPU-intensive so obviously getting some more "raw power" would probably help. Also, the other "downside" is Tradestation is still a 32-bit application so it really doesn't take full advantage of Windows64 bit OS and some of the other HDX capabilities. As an eventual replacement to the HDX (boohoo
) down the road, unless there is a laptop which has a 19+ screen (along with
2.0,I'm skeptical on something of that size being built ), I'm going to go with an HP TouchSmart. Not the best laptop replacement, but it will work for practical purposes.
Of all the 800+ pages I've read on the forum, ostensibly, it seems the two items which give the "best bang for the buck" are increasing RAM (however I rarely, if ever need more than 4GB's) and getting an SSD. -
Yep. Omega Reserach's app. I miss the days when they made standalone versions. They were second to none and Easy Language was/is still one of the best and easiest to system/indicator languages around. I still have a copy of 2000i.
Now everything is tied to their brokerage.
Only equivalent stand alone package left is Equis MetaStock. I've used it but it's not as robust as Tradestation.
They (Omega) should go the NinjaTrader route and sell a stand alone version that has an API package so you can use data from any vendor and interface with most any brokerage.
Likely, an AIO (all-in-one), like the HP Touchsmart and Lenovo Ideacenter is in my future also. If not a full blown desktop. Though 18.4" isn't bad. But 1920x1050 @ that size is pushing it. Rather have that on a 20"+ screen. 23" is ideal at that res. -
Anyone know where I can get a Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit esata driver for my HP HDX18t-1200?
-
Nice thanks for the post. 15 inches for 3d? Hmm ok. Any news about the NVIDIA drivers as to which are the best tested versions to use for 3D on the HDX? -
It does sound loud in the youtube videos.. Haha come to think of it the feint whine when I put in the headphones is kinda annoying..
Definitely agreed on the looks department. They're getting better, and are better looking than some others, but if I had to choose between that and super powers, even as an artist I'd go with the latter..and find some skins, and makeup or something to pretty it up if it was painful to look at
Or maybe cover it with pictures of Kristin Kruek and/or Adriana Lima if need be..? Haha.
Hmm.. I see your point. I just think it would be really hard to go from a 20 inch screen to smaller. How would you think a 2.5 or 2.8 is with SSD compared to an i7 with a regular 7200 hard drive in terms of performance? Actually the only way I'd get a DV8 is with my trusty Student discount PLUS those 500+ coupons.. I may have a rich appetite but I'm a LITTLE more frugal than I sound
Then again I'd rather save more and it take longer to get something while researching the best specs, than get something cheaper but something I'll want to find a way to upgrade later. The only reason I got the 2.5 was because the only other 2.8 I saw brand new for a long time was from a dood who had abysmal customer service and seemed to not like Americans at all.
Yea but when you get upgraded components and accessories WITH a laptop they usually go for a lot cheaper and Eurocom usually has had more from what I could tell. Xotic is definitely more affordable. I'll talk to them, but I've talked to Eurocom peeps and they're nice as well as sharp.. haven't checked out any focused forums for them just yet except for some stuff in here (like the clevo guide) on them which has been helpful. Thanks. -
Haha. Well I'm debating whether to reformat within an hour or so, get Vista back on and then do a backup of the fresh install or not.. Oh snap I have to first get longer ethernet cables to do that.. bah. Nevermind. Wait why was it 65GBs because you had the OS and installed software too?
Ditto, I was sort of impressed with Ghost, but from what I hear I'm looking forward to trying out the imaging from the HP MediaSmart server.
I will likely do the same at 120GBs, as it's the most affordable and I need to get other things as well.. like an 8 port GB router port thingy, an 8 bay enclosure for Hard Drives, an affordable Blu Ray burner etc. I'm think I'm going to use the enclosure as the backup for the hard drives I use inside of the server for file/folder duplication. If you can get a student discount and a coupon while the EX495 is on sale, you can get it at around $590-$600, from HP unless you buy it from Ebay which will make it even cheaper of course. Like with most things you can always add the HP warranty later within the year and all.
Ah ok. I've been considering getting into stocks myself, not professionally but I'm usually good at knowing what will do well financially so I figured I might as well get paid for it. What CPU do you have in the HDX? The HP Touchsmart? Them calling it the perfect kitchen pc makes it sound like it sucks doesn't it? I've typically looked at all in ones with disdain, not just for the lack of portability but also because of the limited upgrading you can do on them.. but man, that i7 600q 23 inch looks pretty hot. You don't get multiple hard drives but still.. Hey, do you happen to know if the HP Care Pack House Call Service that you can get with it includes accidental coverage?
For heavy stuff memory helps, and but yea the reaction to SSDs is the most striking. Looking forward to Windows 7 with an SSD myself. Hoping a nice deal for OCZ Vertexs gets posted within the month. -
Indeed, a lot is tied to their brokerages.TS is trying to be "an all things for all people". They've actually done a pretty decent job integrating their entire system over the years. Now they have different brokerages for different vehicles. For example, FOREX is done via GANN and futures (commodities, currencies, etc.) is done via R.J.O'Brien. Retirement accounts is done via Mellenium. Its "back end" stuff really for the most part. The user only knows what brokerage firm is being used when one signs up with T.S. to trade stocks, commodities, FOREX, etc. and when one gets daily/monthly statement.
Easy language is great to work with. Its quite simple to learn and apply and it's fairly robust.
They do lack however on some important ends-especially putting two or more "tick" or "volume" charts into one strategy. Though there are some work-around, T.S. really lacks on that end. Some of the guys on the Tradestation message boards are brilliant-so it helps for me troll around there as well...
Other than that, I really don't have too much complaints for the most part. They have done quite a good job in upgrading, updating and integrating their system.
I used Metastock for a number of years. I liked it back in 1997-2002 for daily chartware. I used Esignal for real-time data back in 2000-2001 as well. I switched to T.S. in 2002 and have never looked back.
I've checked out the 23" HP and I think it will provide the best balance for me. I actually prefer the 20' as its the most practical for me, but I would have to go with the Athlon X4 605e quad-core. Not that its a bad thing (plus my next door neighbor is a senior programmer at AMD and has been there for 25 years-so it would be nice to support local..haha), but I prefer to go with the Intel i7 when I decide to upgrade.
I should have been more complete with my comment (my bad), you are correct, it's with all software installed, updates, etc.
I think that's the route I'm going to go as I'll just move the Ghost file from my secondary hard drive to the Media Smart- The only reason why I kept it on my secondary drive was in case I was out of town and needed a decent "quick fix". With a NAS such as the Media Smart and and given the ubiquity of high-speed internet everywhere, I really dont' have to worry as much as I used to.
I certainly like your plan of action and direction-you seem to have some extra "backup" and redundancies (i.e.-Plan "B" and Plan "C"..haha)....I'm a bit more simplistic in my approach.
My Dragon has the T8100 (2.1GHz) and the 8800 GTS with 4GBs. Truth be told, besides adding the extra hard drive, I've done nothing to it so I'm looking forward to replacing the primary drive with a SSD.
I haven't purchased the Touchsmart yet...;-)
I've never heard HP calling the Touchsmart the "perfect kitchen PC". Does sound kind of tacky however....
To be honest Dominick_7, I have no clue about the warranties HP comes the Touchsmart. Once I'm ready to make a purchase then I'll be doing my homework..

Hi Everyone! When I turned on my HDX dragon this morning I was unable to use the fingerprint reader. Once logged in Windows I opened the DigitaPersona Personal software for the reader and was given the error "The fingerprint reader is not connected. Please connect the reader". I haven't done anything to disconnect the reader. Can anyone shed light on how to fix this problem? Thanks!
Justin -
What Version of Windows are you using??
You could try to uninstall all of the software and driver and then reinstall the reader. For Windows Vista, you need SP37920, for Windows 7, you can use SP40216. Also, may be a good idea to export your login information before you try to uninstall anything. That way you won't have to register the sites you log into with it all over again. -
What about DNS? -
DNS is overrated.
-
You don't need to touch the DNS numbers.
-
Hmm the only way I got it to work was do everything as automatic. Had to turn off wifi first too.
-
Nice idea actually. I guess a wifi recovery would take way too long if you needed it done remotely. Can it really be done properly via wireless you think?
Thanks, I just always try to be prepared, expect the worst hope for the best and all that. I found out that you can do a manual BACKUP of the internal drives on the server via eSata, but not file duplication to a PARTICULAR drive because the duplication is random as to which drives it could go to.. so you can't do duplication on a PARTICULAR drive like I was hoping to do. What I'm thinking is I'll do a MANUAL backup once or twice per month, plug the eSata multi bay enclosure into the back of the server, manually backup the files I put on the internal drives within the server from the HDX using the server software, then unplug it till the next manual backup. This way I can use up all the full capacity of the server hard drives, and usb hard drives plugged in on to a 4-6 ebay enclosure of hard drives via eSata to make sure all the internal Server hard drives are backed up. Something to consider if anyone wants to get an HP Mediasmart. It's no big deal really.
Gotcha, I meant that people in general, like reviewers (such as Cnet) and such call it a kitchen pc. Ok fair enough. I remember seeing a review for the 25 inch one, I wonder how heavy the 23 inch one is as the former looked pretty heavy. -
Odd. I just did it a few nights ago. I needed to set up an old router I am selling to a friend. I stayed connected wirelessly to my router, but I used my wired connection to connect to the old router. I set the IP address to an available one for that router and set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. I left teh Default Gateway blank and i was able to stay online while I set the old router's settings. Well if it's working then I say leave it be. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Wait a sec... when you went in to change the IP address to manual in the adapter's settings, did you change the Internet Protocol v4 or the Internet Protocol v6?? I ask because you were suppose to make the changes in Internet protocol v4 only. -
Hey guys need some help please....was sitting here watching SG Atlantis and the dragon locked up and powered itself down! So, i go to reboot and in the bios i get a blue square asking me for the power on password...i never set a power on password and have had the dragon since July of last year...i tried my adminstrator password with no success....tried typing in "adminstrator" and got no joy there...went and googled the power on password problem and came up with this document
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00375284&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3455713
it states that i willhave to schedule a repair at a hp depot and it is not a warrenty item.....
my question is, can you work around hp having to reset my 9010 or is this gonna cost me very much?
Thanks,
chris -
You can do it yourself. Requires disassembly of the HDX. It's on the botoom of the system board. You have to remove the CMOS battery for 5+ minutes to clear out password and reset BIOS.
See pages 34/35 of user service manual. You can find a link to the manual in PDF format on page 100, Blacknight's post.
Should take you about 4hrs to complete if this is your first time opening up the HDX. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, then you'll have to ship it off to HP. You'll have to call them up to find out how much it costs. -
weird since you mention about the cmos. curious now, i had another friends computer (it was a v5000 or 5000 series compaq) with the bios password set, but forgotten bios admin password to get in to change it (as opposed to bios powerup password)...and anyway...he took the thing apart, left the battery out for 10 minutes and nothing. took it apart again, left it out (along with the regular laptop battery out and unplugged as well) for hours, and the dang bios password was still there
even the service manual for the laptop says leave the cmos battery out for 5 minutes. but even doing it for hours didn't work.
i witnessed this myself, as i helped open it up and did other things before putting it back again. i wonder why? -
Definitely odd. There could have been a capacitor of some kind, or a second battery. Never heard of a second battery before though but it is possible. It may have been that there is a jumper somewhere on the board that needs to be set. I have come across that before. Another possibility is to use a screwdriver to connect the + and on the BIOS battery terminal once the BIOS battery is removed. This will discharge any capacitor if there is one.
-
Downloaded the PDF service manual on my trusty hp tx2000 and after the BBlizzard passes will go outa state to see my son who works on pc's for the military ... the last thing i want to do is send the unit in because with my luck i won't see it any more
...thanks for the help and now if i can only find out where my wifi went on my tx2000
-
ya. odd that it happened on 2 identical branded laptops (2 different people got them on my recommendation)...and i personally opened up one of them and left it for hours and hours, despite the manual saying to leave it out for several or 5 minutes.
-
Well, no luck on the sound issue. Bluetooth headphones work fine...
But boy, I would've surely loved to hear how 4 speaks+sub on a laptop sound--- ehh, oh well...
Anybody have an extra remote or LCD bezel or carrybag laying around that they want to get rid of?
-
The remote and the bezel can be ordere from the HP parts store. they were in stock as of 2 weeks ago (looking at getting a new bezel too.) As for a carrying bag, that's all a matter or preference. Luggage-type with wheels (I think you can still find one on HP.com), backpack or shoulder bag.
-
I only mess with Protocol 4, nothing really uses 6 yet as far as I know. I tried doing it that way, which is the way I usually do it with the network, but the server didn't like it. I did automatic and it worked. I dunno yos.
-
I tried to do a search here and never came up with an answer. I was wondering I own a HDX 9494nr HP Pavilion Dragon and it has an E-Sata port. I made the computer dual boot with the preloaded Vista 64bit and installed Windows XP. I got the E-Sata port functional in the preloaded Vista 64 bit and got all of not all the devices functional in Windows XP EXCEPT for the E-Sata port/Drive. Is there a special driver or certain way I am to get it to recognize my E-Sata Drive or? Any help or a point in the right direction to a driver or anyhting would be greatly appreciated.
-
I was at Fry's a couple of days ago and actually picked one of the 23'inchers up..it was actually lighter than I had expected.
Now I might be wrong, but I felt it is actually about the same weight as the Dragon (give or take a little)..
I've trolled the Symantec website and found something interesting:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/ghost
"Enables convenient, secure offsite backups Saves recovery points to an FTP site for easier offsite management and even backs up your data to network-attached storage devices."
I'm sure there would be a way to do it remotely.
What I do is keep a USB storage card and keep many apps/files which I need in case if I'm out of town. I figured in the worst-case scenario if I'm out of town and I need to reinstall, I can quickly use the recovery partition, download some updates and install the apps/files/programs from the USB and then do a full Norton when I get back.
Thanks for the headsup about the media server. I'm going to get an SSD first then a media server as I still have enough storage space on my external drive...
-
XP drivers here: http://www.hpdrivers.mercs.us/
Sil3531 is the eSata driver. -
Man you are great!!!
Thank you!!! -
how did you even find these on that site. going on the main mercs dot us you will not find a link to it. you must either know the guy or something
-
Hey guys. So today my charger stopped working. The green light on the AC unit won't go on when plugged in (yes I tried several different outlets). I also noticed a strange beeping noise coming from the charger. I'm assuming it's dead, but was wondering if you guys had any insight. Also, this is my only computer, so I'll only have power for a very limited time now, since obviously my charger is dead. Will HP replace my charger? Out of warranty? Etc? Thanks!
-
Glad that worked out for you.
I keep a bookmark inventory of sites pertaining to the HDX for reference. Some of which have been returning error 404 recently. Started saving some in PDF format. -
HP might replace it for free if you sweet talk them. Use the old, "It gets really hot and I'm afraid it might start a fire. And it's not charging or powering the notebook."
Otherwise, you can nab one off ebay if the HP price is higher. I'll give you quick links so you don't waste battery life searching:
120W 3rd party: $33 shipped.
http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-PAVILION-HDX...ZLaptop_Adapters_Chargers?hash=item1e58e0f34d
Genuine replacement 180w: $44 shipped.
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-HP-180W-Sma...ZLaptop_Adapters_Chargers?hash=item1c0ffefd4b
Good luck. -
that generic 120W charger will work just fine? Doesn't need to be 180W like the OEM HP one?
Oh, and I tried HP chatsupport and complain earlier before I read your message, and my 1 year warranty ended the end of last year. Maybe I didn't press hard enough, maybe they don't negotiate when out of warranty. Should I try again, but really cry about heat and fires and stuff, or am I probably out of luck now since I already contacted them/it's out of warranty and didn't push them hard enough?
Also, on a sort-of-related note, I know that the HP 180W chargers DEFINITELY wont work on an airplane, since most airplane seats dont provide nearly enough power for that. If I got the generic 120W, do I have a chance on some airlines getting power, or is 120W still too much juice? -
The kensington 120w has been reported to work just fine. I and others have found that the HDX doesn't draw past 120w using a watt meter. At idle and light work, it uses 40-50w. Gaming 80w-115w.
180w is spec'd because there may be times when you are drawing max current (like gaming) while charging a near empty batt.
As Hans Gruber said in Die Hard, "hit 'em again!"
No guarantees, but sometimes you can wear them out. Throw in terms like "customer good will", "I normally recommend HP to friends and family" and "loyal consumer" if you can finesse it properly. Though you might want to do it over the phone. Makes it personal.
Can't confirm. Though I thought I read that someone used the Kensignton one on a plane.
In any event, only one way to find out for sure... -
classic hilariousness mixed with genuine care.
-
Cool, which specs did you get with the one you bought? Usually the top specs aren't available except via online, but it's not always what people want. Hmm ok. I just figure I'd be scared to see that thing drop or fall where as with the Dragon you have a stable way to set it on a bed or table. If you will only use it on a desktop then I don't think that's a problem. I use my HDX in bed too so an All in One makes it so I can't be as lazy in that case I don't think haha.
Hmm from talking to the techs for Mediasmart who are usually a bit better than the HDX or other techs, they say you can't do it via the software... but them saying that doesn't mean anything. I think all they're saying is if the connection isn't constant it could fail midway and you'd have to start over again. But then again if your HDX OS crashes how would one connect to the internet unless they carried another higher powered device? I'm still hoping to get another HDX with top specs, but even though I don't mind carrying mildly heavy to heavier stuff, carrying two HDXs would be ridiculous.
No problem man. I was thinking about getting a 3.5 2TB hard drive or two for the Mediasmart this week...but maybe I'll get an SSD first.. though I'm running out of room. I need to backup my DVD data collection, hard drives etc. I'd LOVE to get a 250GB one but they're way too expensive. Anyone know of any deals for the 120GB one from Vertex anywhere? Thanks. -
This optional update popped up in windows update...what should I do?
- ITE Tech.Inc. - Input - ITECIR Infrared Receiver (CHIP) (releaseed January 2010)
I have nothing plugged in or anything else extra special that i ever plug in that would have anything to do with ir that i know of (i have a hard drive external and sometimes a laser mouse that i plug in). -
I've never had a problem updating my IR for use with the Windows Media Center remote, but I wonder if anyone else has. -
Like Dom says, no problem.
-
thanks guys. duh....i forgot i had an ir remote that i never really use.
-
Oh humble folk of the HDX lounge, I have a audio issue. My friend has just brought over a Dell 5.1 surround sound system but I only have 4 audio ports in the back of my Dragon. It seems like I'm missing a side speaker port because it only has one for that. What do I do?
-
The HDX is actually 7.1 surround. Those 4 audio jacks in the back represent 8 outputs. They are 1/8 "stereo" jacks.
See page 12 of the service manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01279508.pdf
Port configuration from left to right (left being closest to hinge):
1. Front Left & Right
2. Rear Left & Right.
3. Center and subwoofer.
4. Side Left and Right.
So the first 3 will give you 5.1. 4th jack gives you 7.1.
