Thanks dude, I got them connected but I'm wondering if I can output sound through my HDMI cable to my tv and stereo as well as through my 5.1 surround sound out of the back of my computer, essentially, two places at once?

not sure how its setup with you. i have used perfectly a 5.1 surround system (logitech speakers) out of my hdx. its amazing. there are not 5 or 6 ports like you think. i believe 1 port handles both left and right or whatever it is. etc. etc. etc. all i know is it's super sound and works flawlessly on my hdx. all 5 channels and the subwoofer.

No, I don't believe you can since to engage HDMI (Digital Output device), you have to select it as a default device which cuts off the Speaker + Redirected device. The device which I believe is what the surround jacks in the back are associated with since the Speaker + redirected is where you configure and test those ports.

It is as you say, can't output 2 at once. Sad state now though as my glorious quickplay decided it didn't want to play Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs on bluray. Having to download a 140 mb file at a blazing 100 kb/s cap....guess i could do some long division in my spare time.

This is sign of a failing Blu-ray laser (plays some discs and not others; plays at times and at others doesn't). Please note that DVD is a separate laser and lens and will continue unaffected. Time to shop for a reliable Blu-ray drive replacement.

Ok guys, I ordered an OCZ 60GB SSD and it is arriving today. Does anyone have any tips or any special instructions for installing and then using Acronis to set this bad boy up in my Dragon??

LOL! GPU and CPU temps have never changed here after almost two years of continuous use. Always cool. It all depends on the environment where you use your hdx! Prevention is better than treatment. External mini-vacuum suction through the vents might also help some. HP Warning: no user serviceable parts inside!

    After you install the OS;
Turn off defrag. Stop it's schedule, then disable the service.
    Disable Superfetch.
Uncheck indexing. Explorer, right click drive, hit properties.

    That's it.

Nothing out of the ordinary with Acronis. Just don't use sector backup image.

But it does recognize it, when I look into my E: drive, its got the files and everything, even in quickplay it has it titled, "cloudy"? That doesn't sound like its failing, and my dragon is only 1.5 years old.

If it is seen in Explorer, then try a more up-to-date player:

    This should solve your issue.

Okay so I've been a lurker on this forum for about 2 years and I'm shocked and astonished to see it still exists. So I guess I'll become an official postman now.

    BACKGROUND and .02
I own a Dragon t9300 with Blu Ray disc drive, Nvidia 8800GTS, and highest moniter and have owned it since May of 2008 as a back from Iraq gift. Coming up on two years and its amazing how nothing out there still comes close. Ive done numerous things with "Elixia" as I call her and she keeps on ticking. The only real issues Ive had is whenever I record the playback only comes out of one side which is something I've grown to master, The other issue is the mini remote just does not work anymore, Im not sure if its the reciever or the remote itself but nothing works, and lastly my blue eject button doesnt work anymore. After almost two years this beast is still the best 4,000 dollars Ive ever spent. Even after coming back from deployment to Dubai and seeing all the expensive laptops something about these leviathans make them stand out. There is no taking it to starbucks unless you want the entire shop to oogle and I literally have my "Yes I know its the biggest youve ever seen" on the tip of my tongue everytime because it never fails for someone to act as if theyve seen a ghost. As far as dependibilty how many laptops can say theyve been to Iraq, Kuwaitt, in the field, or other extreme climates without a scratch...Not many. The Dell I had my eyes on back in the day wouldnt have made it out of the states lol

    QUESTIONS
1.)How do I connect my home theatre system to the dragon (Panasonic SC-PT670) I often connect to my HDTV via HDMI and headphone jack componenet but Im not sure how to connect it to my reciever. 2.) Im a big time gamer and rapper should I upgrade my OS to 7? 3) Are there any fixes, bugs, patches, hacks or optimization I should know about to make the dragon better.4.) Can we upgrade our processors to the new ones I saw in the superbowl commercials lol and what about a new graphics card?

Anywho my firends call me John and I look forward to becoming a dedicated and geeky subscriber to this thread and voicing any input I have. Salutations.

Hey John, and welcome to the forum and the safe returns from Iraq as well. Been there done that...who knows I may have carried you (see my sig :) ).

Anyway, I can answer the simple questions like system upgrades.
Depending on which CPU you have you can only go up to the Core 2 Extreme Processor X7900, 2.8GHz. Some people have and are happy with it, but some argue that for the price, it is more economical to go with the T9300, 2.5 ghz.

Can't upgrade the 8800GTS. 2.0, our resident expert has tried with the most likely candidiate and was unsuccessful. He's good at taking one for the team in the interest of making our HDX's better.

Can go to 8 megs of RAM if you feel the need or desire.

I think most of us have upgraded to 7 and would wholeheartedly agree it is worth the time and money. Simply put, it is just plain optimized better than Vista. Although there are a couple of XP diehards that have painstakingly gone that way with success as well.

I can't really answer the audio stuff, as I only use HDMI (rarely).

I can attest to the awesome expressions in public with these things. Took it to Spain last year and was in hotel lobby waiting for room to be ready. An American couple walks over and the guy says, "look babe, he brought his big screen TV over here with him". Kinda proud and embarrassed at the same time :)

    Cheers, see ya around.

** Edit Missed the CPU you had. Caught it reading 2.0's post, but he corroberated what I said.

First, glad you made it back home and thanks for your service. :)

Answers: (not the best ones, but all answers are a work in progress.)

    1. If your reciever has HDMI, hook it to that. Then hook your TV to your receiver. HDMI carriers both video and audio. To hear audio from HDMI, you will have to set Digital output device in sound control panel to default device.

If your receiver doesn't have HDMI, then you can use the headphone jack for out put but will have to get a 1/8 stereo to RCA L/R adapter. Or, if your receiver has 5.1/7.1 RCA inputs, you can use the surround outs on the back of the HDX.

    2. I'm gaming just fine on Win7. Everything I have works and works just as well as it did on Vista. There's no material benefit for gaming with win7. Win7 is great. Snappier and better thought out than Vista. I consider it Vista perfected.

In any event, if you're happy with Vista, you'll be happier with 7. (Depending on how much you pay for 7.) Get the upgrade version. You can do a clean install with the upgrade media.

If you get win 7, here's a guide to drivers written by our illustrious Comptrekkie; http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5665765&postcount=8954

    3. There are a few things can do. We covered a lot of things in this here massive thread. So not sure what to recommend. Most is software for monitoring things like BatteryBar and HWmonitor. Video driver updates ( HovercraftDriver is your man). Only hardware update worth anything is an SSD.

    4. No, can't update processors and since you're at a T9300, going to both T9500 or X9000 is a waste. You will only see a 3-4% and 8-12% increase in performance, respectively, when you're doing something that requires 100% CPU utilization. The grand majority of games will not see any benefit to upgrading the CPU.

RAM can go to 8GB. But unless you're maxing out RAM now, you won't benefit.

GPU upgrade has been tried and can't be done. You can however overclock it using Nvidia system tools. I'm running an overclock of 610hmz core, 975mhz mem, 1525mhz shader. Some can do more or less. Every GPU has its limits.

Others might come along and chime in with more info and tips.

the strangest thing i think....i've noticed this for awhile now:

ac adaptor (the brick part) for my dragon makes a quiet mouse like sequel when and ONLY when I...

actively use the vertical scroll pad on the touchpad on the dragon. it happens all the time that i ever use it, but it does not happen for 100 % of the duration WHILE using it....maybe 50% or whatever (which i don't think is really the point...but just saying).

    weird huh?

if i use a mouse or if i use the down up arrows, or if i use the regular part of the touchpad, then NO squeal.

when i use the vertical scroll part of the touchpad (right side column), you can hear it working the brick.

I get that noise whenever I plug headphones into the headphone jack. It's fine when sound is coming through the headphones because I can't hear it then.. but what's the dealio with that?..that was a question for anyone. You can faintly hear it but it's annoying. Your problem sounds more annoying though.. like your HDX is punishing you for productivity, ala some liberal policy or something.

ya...it is faint, depends on the room noises. it is ok. i only figured out what it was after a long time.

i still do not know why.

the best description of the sound is the sound of ice cubes melting in ice (not the cracking part.)

i am just wondering why only the use of the vertical scroll part of the touchpad causes such a power fluctuation or whatever is happening to cause that.

ok and maybe it's like 25 % of the duration of that action.

    Hello all,

I need urgent help in fixing my broken HP HDX.

I recently updated my bios to the latest version but I think I used the wrong BIOS version as after reboot, no display. I had the exact same problem mentioned here:

    http://forums13.itrc.hp.com/service...47627+1266498684697+28353475&threadId=1314139

It was only after investigating and dissassembling my HDX that I realise there were 2 types of motherboards for the HDX, one only to support ATI graphics card and the other one (SPS 464591-001) supporting NVidia cards.

Since the BIOS stuffed my HDX, I ordered a replacement motherboard (SPS 464591-001) from EBay since my HDX has that same motherboard and has the Nvidia graphics card.

After installing the replacement motherboard and starting up the laptop, same problem. No display. Only all the HP Quick Touch keys are highlighted and the screen never lights up once to display anything. Same things as with the old motherboard.

My question is, after from getting a new motherboard, do I need to get a replacement Nvidia graphics card also? I mean did the BIOS update flashed the BIOS/firmware on my graphics card if it had one? I already bought a replacment motherboard and it did not resolve the issue. I have rechecked all the cabling and did 2 installs with the new and old board and same thing.

I don't want to purchase the graphics card and find out that I also need to purchase a replacment LCD screen also. Everything was working until after the reboot from updating the BIOS.

Has anyone had this problem and managed to fix it?

I work in IT and am comfortable with dissassembling PCs/laptops and don't want to take it to a service centre as the charges are high.

Or is the problem unfixable as mentioned in the HP forum in the link at the beginning of this post?

Did you try to hook it up to an external monitor to rule the video card as a problem? Hit Fn+f4 to switch monitor output modes.

Thanks LCAC Man lol There's a strong chance you might've let me off in Spain, Greece, Turkey etc this past year. I was (On terminal and I'm Honorably discharged officially in 5 days). I was a Marine on the USS battan if that rings a bell. Anywho it wouldve been cool to see a fellow dragon...but its cooler to know a fellow service member has one. Thank you for thanking me and thank you for your service and the helpful tips. Still on the fence with 7 because I youtube'd talks of Bill Gates creating another OS soon. That guy is incourageable lol!!

Thank you back 2.0 and thanks for the helpful info. As far as the 5.1 issue I think the cheapest route is Media Center through the Xbox until I can buy a decent enough reciever with more jacks and less switching back and forth. Also as bad as I hate to admit it my 32 inch might have to bite the dust soon, the power supply has a life expectancy of 2 years apparently and is impossible and expensive to replace because protron went belly up not to long ago. Ive already replaced the part through a sears warranty and have had it 4 years now with no recent issues, but Im just saving the bucks in advance, hopefully I'll find a new job before then (fingers crossed). What ever happened to dependabilty in a Tube, I still have my insignia 20 inch (I know the dragon's bigger lol) that I bought 5 years ago when I first got in. The only reason I brought up the LCD is because I wanted to view blu ray movies on it but each blu ray has some type of code which doesnt allow you to connect a vga, hdmi, etc to LCD from our computers and view it. You can sadly only view it through the laptop itself which Im willing to do but surround sound would be nice. So the best alternative, new reciever, a LCD higher than 720 which can handle our 1080p playback, downloading a blu ray movie as a file and streaming it or just buying a Ps3. Endless possibilities but frustating none the less. As far as the remote issue, L5 is releasing a new universal remote clip for the iPhone for any infrared software, so I'll just program the remote into my phone and vwalah.

haha These are wierd beasts. I would often use the battery pack as a stand for when I slept with it in my military racks to prevent overheating. Never heard humming when scrolling though, maybe you can muffle the punishment by means of smothering its voice with its bottom.

well im not really worried at all, just thought i'd mention how weird it is. it's not that it's quite annoying either. just curious why that particlar action might cause the brick to make those noises as opposed to perhaps something more stressfull on the power requirement, that might cause it to do that. i mean a vertical scroll bar on the touchpad...pffft....that should be milliwatts.

you used that as a stand for your dragon?

lol you slept with her...how touching. even i dont sleep with my dragon, but i guess in the military, you probably have to or someone will kidnap her huh.

No I did not try to hook up an external monitor. I will it out this weekend after I reassemble the laptop parts together again.

But I don't think it will help as previously I had a system on password set in the BOIS and even typing it in blindly (with no display) and pressing enter, nothing happens, can't see/hear the HD spinning for bootup. Just all the HP Quick Touch keys stays lighted up permanently and no HD activity light blinking to show HD activity.

Also after changing motherboards, the system password would not be on the new motherboard and same thing. Can't see the laptop bootup.

    Quick question,
I have had my HDX since oh...2008 and am upgrading to 7, however, im am using 32bit and was wondering if i can remove the restore portion of my second hdd. I kinda searched around but didnt have time to read all 943 pages of posts to find info.

Thanks and dont hate 32 bit :)

The old response to such a question is; if you made the restore disks then go ahead. Reasoning being, if you had to send it back to HP, you might want to restore it back to factory original.

The new response is, whether you made the restore disks or not, you can get rid of it. A clean install of win7 is far better than HP's bloated rendition of Vista. Just note that some things may not work like they did in Vista. Specifically your eject button. I think someone got it to work. don't know. I don't use that button or any of the touch buttons on top.

And you can go to 64bit win 7. That is unless you absolutely must have 32bit. Otherwise most programs that run in 32bit run in 64 bit. I haven't found any that haven't unless we're talking about really old games or 16 bit software.

I agree, a clean install does run and even feels better than the factory default of Vista with all of the unused software.

As for the eject button, you would have to install one or more of the HP media programs to get it to work. I have QuickPlay, QuickLaunch and QuickTouch installed. I believe that QuickPlay and QuickLaunch is what got my eject button to work.

And for the 32-bit software issue, I would go with Windows 7 64-bit. It's faster and you can use all of your RAM (if you have more than 3GB installed.). And just about all 32-bit software works fine with it. Also, there is the Windows XP Mode if you really need your software and it won't work with Windows 7, but that's only for certain versions of Windows 7. That's one of those "Don't worry about it until it's time to cross that bridge" kind of things.

Can you/anyone verify that USB works with XP Mode? I hate that I can't install stuff to my older Samsung i730 Pocket PC that must use older software (or the WM5 update) because it won't accept ActiveSync.

Nice. Looking forward to get the 120GB one via a future deal/discount at some point.

Thanks for your service John. I can't recall anyone else with a Dragon having gotten it out of service unscathed. I wished I could change the noise thing, but I think it will take having to open it. With purchasing an accidental warranty on it I may just send it in for that and if they'll replace either the Blu Ray Rom that may be going possibly (which Ill verify when I reformat if that's the case) and or touch pad that has scratched paint. Anyone know if there's a limit to how many times you can extend it each year?

That's exactly what it sounds like. Good analogy. I'm thinking of getting an extended accidental warranty for this HDX, if I do get it and get it sent it I'll let you know if they tell me what was wrong with it exactly, in case you want to fix it yourself/get it fixed by someone else.

Dv7: I'm no expert but I don't think it's anything to worry about since it's a perpetual thing and nothing has adversely been effected (right?). I don't think anything is messed up with my noise, it just annoys me personally, and I doubt HP would fix it, but maybe they would.. I may have another issue that may need fixing though.. this question is either for you since you had some posts about batteries before and/or anyone else as well..

How come my Power/Battery icon says 76% of my battery is available, when it's plugged in, but says it's NOT charging? And it stays at 76%...

This is what happened right before I noticed it.. I plugged it into a new surge protector yesterday, it didn't turn on, so I thought it was a problem with my HDX, so (probably a stupid idea) I plugged it in without the battery and only the blue lightning bolt icon on the front left of the machine lit up briefly when I powered up. Then I realized I hadn't turned on the power surge protector. I did so and realized it went into sleep mode or is it hibernate mode. It came back up thankfully without a problem, but then I noticed the power icon in the task tray saying plugged in but not charging..staying at 76%.. Anyone know what's going on?

One other question.. any recommendations on a good vacuum for cleaning out the HDX?

EDIT: Somebody in this forum needs to clean out his mail box..

I have an HDX 9000T CTO that I purchased during the summer of 2008.

    CPU: T9300 2.5 GHz CPU
    RAM: 4 GB DDR2
    GPU: GeForce 8800M GTS 512MB
    HD: 320 GB 5400 RPM

With tax time coming up, I'm expecting a pretty good return and I'm contemplating either upgrading my HDX or, I've been itching to custom build a desktop again.

I'm curious as to what my upgrade options are for the laptop. I've read that despite HP saying the max memory is 4 GB, it's possible to install and use 8 GB of RAM? I'm afraid I'm uncertain as to what speed RAM it can take, though I believe I've seen that it would be DDR2 800?

Also, from reading, it looks like there's not much in the way of worthwhile options for upgrading the CPU, so I was curious as to how well I can overclock the T9300 and if anyone had any advice on that.

I was planning on buying a large, HD monitor whether I build a new rig or upgrade the laptop. In addition to this, I was also considering getting a BD drive for the laptop, which drives are most recommended?

Additionally I was toying with the idea of installing a SSD, however that would limit my HD capacity unless I installed a larger secondary drive. In either case, to reap the most benefit, I suppose any games would have to be installed on the SSD or not necessarily?

Just to kinda recap what is in the forum from 2.0 and others, yea you can upgrade it to 8GBs of ram, that what I'm using and it rocks. You don't need it unless you want to do more than just browse with a few tabs, like if you want to use heavy softwares like Photoshop, for doing encoding/video editing, have 40-100+ tabs opened, use the QuickTouch Settings box for volume, bass etc. You can use 800mhz RAM but it will be go back to 667mhz, and be slower than just getting a 667mhz memory module like a GSkill or other brand (Newegg.com sells the GSkills still I believe which are cheap but fast).

You can't overclock the CPU because it's been locked. You can upgrade the CPU to the 2.8ghz X9000, but some like 2.0 would say via benchmarks it's not noticeable unless you run it at 100% CPU, like for fight scenes in video games that are heavy and intense in terms of data needing to be processed, or video editing, compression things like that. If I get a 2.8 HDX I can do comparisons via just a hands on use to see if I notice any differences. Usually I can with specs via this kind of difference, not night and day, but I usually see it being a little more spunky than a lower spec, but then again I'm an animator and have been trained to see frame by frame stuff. Either way everyone would say though the best and most noticeable upgrade would be to go from a sata hard drive to an SSD, like from OCZ their vertex series. I'm looking forward to getting one, it's pricey but worth it. Yea putting games on the second hard drive is what I see a lot of people doing. Right now I have like 200+GBs of software on my first 500GB hard drives and I think a good amount of that is video games. I hope to get either a 120GB SSD or 250GB SSD in the first slot, and keep a 500GB Seagate 7200 in the second until a 1TB is slimmed down to be able to fit in our HDX.

The Blu Ray ROM drive that comes with the HDX is the UJ-120, which is a DVD burner/player, and Blu Ray PLAYER only. If you want to upgrade it to a Blu Ray burner as well you can put a UJ-220 in it, the only ones I believe can get newer firmware are the ones made by Sony, but I thin unless it's new you never know if it may work unless you can perhaps overwrite previous firmwares. They range from 2-4x speeds, but you can get an external UJ-240 that does 6x. With an external you can use it with any PC/notebook but you lose the convenience of having it internally of course. If you wanted to you could always get an extended warranty if you wanted to have HP cover it, but obviously with HP, if you do substantial upgrades like a CPU upgrade and didn't change it back to how it was originally via cto, they will send it right back to you if you send it in for repairs.

Thank you, so it sounds to me like 4 GB of RAM is likely more than sufficient for my needs as all I do is light internet browsing and gaming. The processor, for the cost and trouble I think if I decide large upgrades are necessary I might be better off building my own custom rig.

However I certainly want to add a BD player and the SSD seems like a worthwhile investment.

Just want to clear up any possible misconceptions as the rest of the post was very good.

Difference between a T9300,T9500, X9000 is too small to be worth any while especially considering the price premium of a X9000 which can't be overclocked in the HDX even though it's an overclockable CPU. HP locked the BIOS and uses a fixed PLL chip. SO programs like SETFSB won't work either. Nor can you do a hardwired jump mod since the land from the pin are in the middle layer of the PCB.

Also it's not possible for a X9000 the be "spunkier" than a T9300 or T9500 unless the task at hand demands 100% CPU utilization. The reason being is because each of these has the same exact CPU frequency at the same CPU step until you reach the last step. On the last step, the respective frequency will be 2.5ghz, 2.6ghz, 2.8ghz.

Think of it in terms of a horsepower curve. Imagine if for the first 7/8th of the horse power curve all engines(CPU) output the same horse power. At or near red line (max RPM), is where the curve gets more parabolic. So if you're city driving or cruising on the highway you won't tell the difference. But once you start to race, say from a stop light, and you all have the same gear ratios, weight, tire tread and tire rating and aerodynamics(drag coefficient), you'll notice the boost when you start red lining before gear shifts.

Even so, the difference in computational power between a 2.5ghz(T9300) and (2.8ghz) X9000 is only 10% on average at the last step. What does that mean in real world terms?

Well if you are encoding an MP3 and it takes you 2 mins using a x9000, it will take approximately 2min 12 secs with an T9300. Provided that CPU utilization was at 100% for most of the encoding. If that 12 secs turns you on, by all means then. If you do something of this sort where time is money then yes, it's definitely worth it. In this example, that's one more MP3 that can be encoded per hour. Theoretically speaking.

Whereas, with an SSD, the difference is pronounced. The reason being is not only is the transfer rate about 3-5 times faster than a HDD, the seek time is several hundred times faster.

As an example, win7 on a HDD will take about 1 min to boot to a settled and usable desktop. On a SDD, it takes about 25-30 secs. Firefox first start up after a boot will take about 1min or so on a HDD. With an SSD about 5 to 10 secs. Thereafter it comes up when you click it. Most programs "blink" up when you start up.

Basic economics; X9000 will cost you $560-$800 and only give you its 10% boost at max CPU utilization. SSD (60GB-120GB) will cost $300-$400 and give you a 100%+ boost in overall performance.

One last note about X9000 and games. The grand majority of games are GPU dependent and not CPU dependent. But even with a CPU dependent game, let's say that you're getting 30FPS with an T9300. X9000 will give you 1-2 FPS more (it won't give you a full 10% increase because there's still that matter of GPU processing). Will you notice it? No.

Just like with overclocking the GPU, if you can't get more than 20% FPS, then it's not really worth it in material terms.

Now, if it were possible to get a quad core in the HDX, then we'd have something worthwhile...

Hey guys, I don't know if anyone uses this site, but I always use it to test PCs after I have done work on them to make sure they are as fast and responsive as they are suppose to be.

    http://www.pcpitstop.com

I can say that I trust this more than I trust my WEI score because it measures the performance against other computers and laptops around the world. Windows 7 can tell me the Dragon is fast all day, but when a site with thousands of other users tell me it's fast, then I have reason to believe it lol.

Anyhow, you guys should check it out, especially those with SSDs and 8GB of RAM. Before I changed to the SSD, my Dragon was ranked in the top 18% for the World Laptop Score. After the SSD, it's ranked in the top 7%. Hell of a jump :D

There is no max other than the current capacity limit of hard disk drives on the market. Currently that is 640GB @ 5400 RPM. When it goes to 1GB, that too will be usable in the HDX.

FYI: the 750GB drives you might find out there now are 12.5mm height. Wrong form factor for notebooks. You need 9.5mm height drives.

i don't think i was old enough to remember then people were looking forward to 1GB of hard drive space? LOL when was that btw, the 90's?

when 1gb DOES become available, i will be the first to order one. i hope they're cheap.

Actually the biggest drive is a 1TB, but like 2.0 said, it's at that 12.5mm height, so it's a good chance that it won't fit in the Dragon, or most laptops for that matter. There are some people that have reported to have gotten it to fit in their Thinkpads but only a few that i have read about in review for the drive.
