lol. there probably was a time when 1gb hard drive was a wow, wasnt there? was it windows 95 or before?
-
It was around the time of Windows 95. I remember buying a 1GB drive to fit Windows 95 on. Had to load it from floppy. 16 damn floppys
-
floppy????
-
Yes, Floppys. 16 of them for the OS and another 6 for Internet Explorer. NOT FUN!!

Mine was doing something quite similar, I called HP and they sent me a new one -- free of charge -- and I had it within 48 hours of placing my call to them. -
I was asked to post here with the hope someone has had similiar problems and have rectified the issue. I am not getting sound through my onboard speakers, only through the headphone jacks. I have tried almost everything I know and with the help of some of the other members here in another forum. I know there is nothing wrong with the speakers because I have removed the original drivers and got sound through the speakers. But the sound is only window own sound which is terrible. Installing the updated sound driver from HP site does not produce sound through the speakers but only through the headphones. Here is the thread I started:

I'm hoping someone with the exact same laptop as mine can help me, if you had a similiar issue and what to do. Thanks. -
Someone can probably help you shortly...probably member 2.0...stay tuned. I can help you but I have to be in front of my machine as I can't remember this stuff off the top of my head. I can try though.
First, go to the SWSETUP folder on c: drive. Do you have sp40438(5607)? or sp36420 (5511 original driver)? 40438 is the better one, but you may need to install the other first. Get them here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=2093&product=3467436
Go to device manager, sound, and uninstall IDT or whatever it says (right click, uninstall). If it asks to delete hardware, don't do it yet. Then go to top of device list and right click, scan for hardware changes, see if it loads automatically. There might be a re-boot after each step, don't remember.
If all goes well, it will work fine, but given the other thread, it may not. Repeat steps, but this time check the delete driver box if it shows. Reboot. If it installs again on boot, uninstall, but go to SWSETUP folder and delete those 2 service pack folders before you reboot again. Keep those drivers downloaded from HP on your desktop or something. When you are ready to install, click on the 36420 first. It will go through the process and unpack into your setup folder again. Follow the directions, and check to see if your speakers are working. If they are, then install the sp40438 over the first one.
Bunch of jumbled mess, I know. Hope it helps. Let us know what goes on, or wait till someone can post steps more logically than I did. -
I am going to give your method a try. I checked the SWSETUP folder and I see that I have sp35799 & SP40438 installed. So I will try your method and get back to you. Thanks.
-
BTW, what two service pack folders should I delete?
-
Either one or both of these if you have them, so you can start from scratch on a clean driver install.
When you reinstall, try this one first: sp36420
sp40438 -
Just installed the first driver,sp36420, but got no sound through the speakers. I am not going to install the second one. Wish me luck. I'll return with my findings. Here is what the device manager looks like with the first install:
-
Well, I tried out everything you suggested but still no sound through speakers. Although I did get sound through the speakers when I removed the drivers, which I take it it is the original windows driver.

hello ... I'm Spanish and I have a 9350es hdx hp (2.1 ghz, 4gb ram, 8800 gts, 500gb) .. I wanted to know if I change it a more powerful processor (X9000 xtreme or another) without having to change my motherboard ... is possible?? GSKill memory PC2-5300 200 pin 667 would be compatible on my laptop? thank you very much
-
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
I personally don't own a HDX Dragon but based on what I read around this thread, your motherboard can upgrade to the X9000 with no problems. However, it sounds like that the price for performance ratio makes the X9000 not worth the price tag vs. T9900 and you can't overclock the X9000 either, since HP locked the BIOS and the PLL for overclocking, so those unlocked multipliers are going to be wasted.
Correction: Only the X7800 and the T9300. Not the X9000 or the T9900. Sorry. Also regarding RAM, your RAM will be fine as clock speeds on them are not that drastic in improving performance and as long as the motherboard is DDR 2, you are fine. -
They sent you a new what?
-
About a page or two back 2.0 covered the CPU issue, I'm still trying to get a cto'd 2.8GHZ HDX with X9000, in addition to the X9300 CPU HDX I have (2.5GHZ) to be able to get a warranty for both, as opposed to upgrading it myself paying for the price of the CPU and doing it myself or having someone else do it, while voiding the warranty in the process. Also as stated you can't overclock the X9000.
The GSkills you mentioned are great, they're fast and inexpensive. As stated in a response a page or two back if you go with higher powered ones like 800mhz, it will work BUT be slower than the 667mhz ones. -
then I recommend putting the process or continue with mine? ... yours is fine with 2.5 ghz? and with the ram? thanks
-
I didn't understand your first sentance. 2.5GHZ is ok.. Hence why I am looking for just a little more muscle since I push the HDX to the maximum. 8GB is very nice, but I'm looking forward to using it with Windows 7 which is less bloated than Windows Vista. I bought Windows 7 but if I get another HDX I may put it on that one (with a 2.8ghz cpu) instead of this 2.5ghz HDX.
-
and where you get another hdx? are no longer manufactured?
-
That's the beauty of ebay. I just bought my Dragon 6 months ago. Perfect condition and for under 1100.00 USD.

I like that you can just buy the caddy too then get whatever card you want :twothumbs
Thoughts?
Now just need to figure out a way I could then route the video output back through to my Dragon so I can just use the built in 20" screen instead of a monitor. -
Anybody got any cyanide pills I can take....so disheartening. Especially when you originally buy something for 4,000. Congrats to you Remy. The only place Ive ever seen these bad boys as far as in store was best buy about a year and a half ago. You know the display model no one pays any mind too because they likely cant afford one...
-
Dominick_7, just to be clear, I haven't purchased one yet.
I never use my HDX on my bed, I never used on an airplane either, just not practical for me. I use it as my desktop replacement. I think that is why I'm going to get a TouchSmart next...its just as practical as the Dragon is. Right now, as I've mentioned, I use my Dragon 95% for my trading work or for surfing the web.
Gosh, I've been using Microsoft since the days of Windows 2.0....
-
i had to look up floppy to see what it was. how ancient!
hey do you think thats why 2.0 is called 2.0, from windows? maybe he helped make it
is there such a thing as a subthread? i'd like to make one for how people got their names here. me obviously cuz i got a new dv7t when/before it came out and i was too excited about it. looking back i wish i could change my screenname now, especially since i didnt keep that one for long. oh well..what's in a screenname anyway.
-
Captain, aft shields are down! Another direct hit from behind and we're done for!
2.0 is because I got a 2nd chance at life.
-
Yeah, I have been messing with computers for close to 15 years. I could have installed Windows 95 with a CD, but the computer Iwas using was OLD, it wouldn't support a CD-Rom Drive. So I had to use floppys. I never spent so much money on floppys before that (close to 150 bucks
).
RemyL75 = fav comic/cartoon character + year i was born. Simple nerd logic at work, nothing special lol
I will confess, DV7T's guess at 2.0's name was starting to make a LOT of sense lol. I was thinking "he knows WAY too much to NOT have worked on Windows. Hmmm." lol -
wow i love this "subthread"
2.0....i'm sure that's one really interesting story. had a couple of close calls myself (car accident split second away from smashing passenger side from someone who came barrelling past the red light--he nicked the rear fender which caused us to spin 180---i was 16--police caught up with him later when he smashed his car into a pole after hitting another car....and almost fell down a mountain according to my mom, when i was a baby, when my parents were hiking with me...but i have no recall of this of course)
remy, i read comic when i was a little girl cuz my older brother was into them. i cannot tell you what i read cuz i dont remember. oh and i dont believe i ever saw a floppy in person, not consciously at least. -
maybe it could also be true. i dont know if aft shields down means wrong guess or right guess. LOL
-
Wow. really?? Never, ever seen one in person??
-
No love for the ViDock? hmmf fine.
-
You'll probably get a lot more love...errr, answers here, bro

It's a bust, IMO. Novel idea but might as well get a desktop. Plus it's impossible to reroute the output back into the HDX.
What would be a better idea is going forward is if GFX cards were slotted like an expresscard slot. Easy upgrade. Only problem is, CPU/GPU bottleneck threshold will be easily hit since you can't easily upgrade notebook CPUs. Meaning while the GPU can be swapped for a more powerful one, it will outpace the CPU's processing power.
So really, at the end of the day, a desktop is best if one is looking for upgradeability. -
Surely the x9000 in the HDX has better longevity than it's 8800?
Dont want a desktop as I like the freedom to move about, but if you cant re route it back into the laptops screen sod it then, not worth it, dont need the bulk of a monitor
-
Now that would be sweet. -
The X9000 in the HDX (since it can't be overclocked as intended) has been twice trumped already by what's out currently in terms of raw processing power.
The 8800M paired with 1680x1050 is holding it's own quite nicely. Still playing current games at max options.
The CPU/GPU bottleneck threshold is surpassed with a 2.4ghz 3MB Cache CPU in the HDX. IN most cases, a 2.1ghz passes the threshold also.
In any event, the HDX is altogether 2 generations obsolete. This summer will mark 3 generations.
My sentiments exactly. -
Can't be done.
-
Ditto on that. -
Can the processor of the HDX 9050EO be upgraded?
-
Yes. T9300, T9500, or X9000.
BTW, about your sound issue; have you tried a hard reset? That's when you take the battery out, AC out and hold down the power button for 30 secs.
That's in addition to what Hovercraftdriver prescribed. -
Daft question anyone tried the new BFBC2 beta on the HDX with 8800m gts, wondering about getting it...
-
I still have the sound issue and did go through what Hovercraftdriver described; but I will give your method a try and get back to you. BTW, Are those processors still available for purchase?
-
You can find the processors on ebay. Just beware of ES versions that do not have C0 stepping.
-
OK, even thought I have no idea what you mean by C0 Stepping. So how do I know if they are ES? BTW, did what you told me to do with the sound and that did not help either. Thanks for helping me.
-
just a little before my time if it was in 95. i cant imagine they have them anymore. next time i go to the computer store i might ask.
-
i always wondered why they dont offer upgradable gpu as easily as ram and hard drive are..just a slot or pins or something...in a laptop...or at least on the mid-higher end laptop?? isn't this someone could figure out easily...i mean what is it now, soldered...how hard would it be to make a little interface?
or is this a marketing ploy to make more money on new laptops? -

There are two types;
Retail/OEM or ES(engineering samples).
Retail/OEM start with S; as in SLAZ3
ES start with Q.
The only ES you are interested is the Q174 because it has C0 stepping and temp readout just like a retail/OEM version.
I believe the OEM/ES ones he recommends have more scaling points like the retail ones have. -

Cool. Were you under warranty? If not, may I ask what you said to them to get them to send one?
