Lint free cloth. Kensington sells very good ones. It just wipes clean like a dust mop. For fingerprints, especially on the touch console, damp it with water and rub 'em out. If you have hard water, it may leave a little residue when it dries. Just buff it out with a dry part of the cloth.
Screen doesn't need cleaning yet, but when the time comes, I have a non-alcohol/ammonia based screen cleaner that I use for my Tablet and PDA called: Klearscreen.
http://www.klearscreen.com/
Above all, don't use alcohol anywhere. Exception; to remove adhesive residue from the stickers if you remove them.

Darn... and I thought there was a way to turn the HDX into a tablet too. (without a separate tablet paraphernalia)
Guess I will have to be satisfied with my TC1000 and Tecra M4 for my tablet needs. -
You are the driver-man, man!
It works!!! Thanks I owe you a beer!
But where does it find the driver? From the net or from the location where I installed it when I first tried it on? -
Ran mine for a week hoping the disk thrash would settle down. It didn't. And the reason is...
Microsoft designed it for ordinary users. For power users or for folks who use many varied apps at random times, Superfetch and search are a drag on the system. Especially if you run memory intensive applications. Any Adobe product is pretty much a memory intensive app. Java apps that load a lot of data. Modern games. Etc.
My work apps alone take up significant resources to run as they are connected to a central server which pipes through thousands of kilobytes per minute that has to be cache to disk. Then there's Java doing a memory dump every so often. Indexing this data is problematic as it'll be dumped later anyhow.
Anyway, most tweak guides recommend turning these things off with the rational being, if one is even reading the tweak guide they're already a power user. Else it'd be all Greek to them. What's more, with near unanimity, those who have disabled it are happier for having done so and report that they have a better Vista experience.
I don't recommend it for everyone, though. -
Haha. Nope. Sorry. Maybe HP will make an 18.4" notebook with a Wacom tablet built in like that new Lenovo w700 get up.
-
i have a question if anyone can answer please.
If i have a hdx with a bluray player but only the lower WXGA 1050 resolution, will i still be able to watch true HD 1080p movies on a HD TV when connected with HDMi cable? or does that only work with the hdx with the 1900 X 1200 resolution?
thanks -
Yes. external resolution is independent of the laptop screen's reso.
-
Mr. 2.0, where have you been? I miss you. No one to agree with me anymore on any of the other forums.
-
All I did was just click on the "update driver" in the device manager graphic card window and then I allowed it to search for the best driver... And it just updated itself _ I just wonder if it found it on my PC or on the net... I guess next time I'll disconnect ethernet before doing it just for the sake of understanding where it finds it.
-
Hey Infamous. I've just been on this and a tx2500 forum.
-
Amazing that you bring this up as I was about to ask a related question. I bought my wife the dv9640us at Christmas time. Are these drivers suitable for the 8600m/256mb/Vista 32 model in this lappy? I have only been using LV2G drivers, but these "HP" drivers work best in my HDX, so I thought I would try them in hers. Thanks -
When I said "these" HP drivers, I was referring to the 175.86 as I haven't upgraded to the .97's yet. May not unless I get some favorable feedback; as you alluded to them being technically for Compaq systems. I updated hers to the 174.32 this weekend and while she noticed performance increase (she says), she also said the colors didn't look as good. She likes pretty over efficient so I was made to revert them back. Anyway, thanks for the quick answer. -
For those lurking still waiting for the right time to buy, HP has a 30% off coupon available. Coupon code is NB8821. I haven't bought mine yet either, but will be placing my order this evening after work.
-
Yep coupon works. It's not stackable* but it's still 30% off.
*Not Stackable means you lose instant savings and any other promos if you apply the coupon. -
Just to give an idea, spec out the HDX9494NR from the HP site and you get a total of $1575 instead of the $1599 that most folks sell it for retail.
On another note, I'm ordering my system with 2GB RAM and getting a 4GB kit from Crucial. Has anyone had problems upgrading their RAM? -
The mystery goes on: it worked all day ... now it doesn't anymore BUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS §#<%???
It will eventually become a serious problem, since I am completely unable to update graphic drivers!!! -
No need to apologize, just giving a heads up. I re-installed the original driver and all is well again.
-
Some of us don't need stuff like this and prefer a system that isn't bogged down with unnecessary services. I survived XP for years with Indexing, System Restore, and VSS disabled and always had a highly responsive trouble free system.
Unfortunately, I've read all over the net that these services should not be turned off in Vista; someday I'll try it on a spare machine to see if there are any unforseen consequences. -
For safety, the general consensus is that system restore and vss should not be disabled, as they provide you with some measures of protection in the event of crashes, software hosing the system, accidentally overwriting files, etc.
They generally don't impact on performance much if at all, though they can affect available free space on any drive they are enabled on (system restore in particular, volume shadowing silently mirrors data in free space but doesn't consider it as allocated and thus is available to write on).
In either case it is always a smart idea to keep separate backups of any important data, regardless of whether or not you use the extra safeguard of system restore and vss.
Indexing (not to be confused with journaling features of ntfs) is largely for speeding up file searches, it is not necessary, but it generally won't bite you in the arse either way. -
Ok, so I knew I might run into this problem... But is there any way to upgrade the firmware of the mashi*a blu-ray drive??? It won't play the new blu-ray I bought, says no disc in drive.
-
Ok... I just had a bad thing happen.. Laptop shut it self down.. And when It came back up the screen was black until it said... windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown.. Problem event name... Blue Screen!! What is this??? And why would it happen out of no where.
-
No I did not and It just keeps restarting.. BSOD. I think I will go ahead with getting A refund on it... She asked me to comfirm whether or not I was keeping or returning the item.. And im going to return it
.

I bought my HDX in June. I originally came to this forum to find a fix for the OSD issue (which I fixed(?) by Control Panel -> Quick Touch -> Sound 3).
Anyway. 2.0, you've been an invaluable resource, thank you very much.
For virtualizing I use Microsoft VirtualPC 2007. It seems smaller and better integrated into Windows than VMware. For Windows virtual machines and Linux without a GUI, it's flawless. -
I guess instead of a refund ill send it to hp to get it repaired??? The fans started kicking on very loud (high) and the computer is making a robotic type chirping sound. Not sure what it is, but hp should be able to fix it I would think.. Since it is under 1 year warranty. Since I want the computer I just think it would be much easier.
-
...that chirping sound you are hering could be the network meter clipping. if it gets to a certain level it will chirp to warn you, providing you are running the network meter on your gadgets.
-
...guys I have a small problem. How do you change the sound seperately for your device and individual application? I cant seem to find a setting for it anywhere. Please help out!!
-
right click speaker icon in tray, select sounds.
-
Yeah, that's an option. Also see if that 30% off coupon code (posted a few pages back) would be good enough for you to configure a new system at a similiar or less price than what you paid for this one. If so, send it back. If not, send it in for repair. Repair can take a while though. Could be up to a month.
-
Thanks.
Unfortunately, I couldn't even try out Virtual PC 2007 on this machine since I'm not running Vista Ultimate or Business editions. Microsoft in all their wisdom decided to limit the use of their free VM to just those editions.
So my choices were Parallel's or VMware's.
How is the mouse integration with Virtual PC? In VMware, you can only access the L/R mouse buttons and wheel. -
I checked that one out on my old computer. Wasn't as good as VMWare for my purposes at the time but a pretty good VM. With VMware, you can also copy and paste between Guest and Host OS, plus set up shared directory.
The one annoying thing that you can't do with VMWare is to access all the features of say, a LOGITECH MX or VX mouse. I wish they just let it be a USB device that you could install a driver for in the guest OS. -
It installs with only a mild complaint window on Vista and XP home editions. Integration with your host OS is seamless.
You can get time-limited VPC images from:

That page is worth a look. -
Sending it in to hp to be repaired. They said It's a hardware issue, and when they had me flash the bios the lcd wouldn't power on after that. So they are going to repair it, and said including shipping will take 5-7 days.
-
I just bought a HP Pavilion HDX9494NR and I like it. BUT!!! I can't load one of my fav games: Sid Meiers Civilization IV Beyond the Sword. It loads almost all the way and a error pops up. Any CIV fans with words of wisdom?
Also I was looking at previous posts about updating video drivers. Long story short I can't get any video drivers to install. What am I doing wrong.
Thanks,
B -
I'm interested in purchasing this laptop. I'd like to know is the current HDX on the US site that is for sale all using the same motherboard? Specifically, if I get the T5850 chip, will I be able to swap it for the T9500 down the road? I know the T5850 runs on 667 bus, while the rest of the other chips run on 800 bus, and as far as I know, only Santa Rosa platform runs on 800mhz bus. Also, are the chips Merom or Penryn?
I did some reading and it seems there will be no Montivena HDX? Pity, as I think the quad cores start with the Montivena platform. -
...have done that and been through all the windows, i cant see anything that lets me adjust the individual volume for windows and related applications like itunes or media centre.
-
Go to the Civ 4 forums...I had that problem, but can't remember how I fixed it.
Think it
may have had something to do with installing as Administrator, but really can't remember..I'll look and try to get back to you.

Try this link:

It addresses Civ 4-BTS specifically and has several Vista fix/suggestions in it. -
NEW Nvidia Drivers OUT!
177.92 w/physic support!
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=20271
anyone found newer firmware for the bluray player yet? -
also, new look to the hp update site.
-
Right on brutha.
You'll be up and running in no time.
Aloha
-
Thanks
. Their customer service isn't as bad as it sounded, at least up to this point. Hopefully the repair will go smoothly and I will have a fully functional beast ready to do war!!
-
Oh I see what you're looking for now. Right click on volume icon in tray, but choose "Open volume Mixer." It may not give you a wide range of choices but you can adjust media player and windows sounds from there or any program you have running that access the sound hardware. If you don't see it there just run the program and it should be added to the list automatically. Also, the Device button in the upper left corner of that screen lets you choose headphones, mic, etc., to adjust also.
-
...thanks mate. I think i was trying to do the impossible!!! not enough sleep and wired on coffee lol. I know about the mixer, what i was trying to do was adjust the itunes volume greater than the speaker volume!!! F***K i really dont know what i was thinking.
...really appreciate all the feedback here. This is truely one hell of a laptop isnt it! -
Anybody install XP on this beast?
-
I really wouldn't want to try it. I'm assuming alot of the quick touch button controls, as well as many other great features would be lost in doing so. This system is really built for vista.
-
I just want to know if somebody compared benchmark scores etc, I mean XP still scores the highest in benchmarks correct?
-
Just so everyone knows, SupCom audio is finally WORKING in the newest IDT driver.
-
I'm sure somebody here has installed XP and is working perfectly/
-
Hopefully HP tells you what broke because I'am sure a few people on this forum are dying to know if their 8800 might fry on them one of these days--assuming that's what you have.
-
Yeah hopefully, I'm thinking that's what it is. I'm just glad it did it within the warranty period!! Especially when she had me flash the bios, and upon restart the lcd wouldn't even power on at all. Getting the packing material tomorrow afternoon, and it will be on its way!! Wish me luck.
