Will you be traveling where there are power plugs? Because, the HDX16t has pretty awful battery life.

Also, how much weight are you willing to carry? I bought my HDX 16t for college, but I'm willing to carry around the extra weight for the features.

Mine does the same thing. I did some searching and a lot of articles point to hardware issues. Hopefully its not that. I guess all i can do is monitor it.

I take mine to/from work everyday. But I'm used to it. My first laptop was an ASUS G1 and it wasn't much lighter than this one.

Yes. I just looked at the US HP.com site and you can configure it with the T9400, up to the T9800.

I think its an excellent portable. Size is just right in my opinion. Big enough to watch movies, and browse the net or work on Office applications.

The smaller you go though, of course the more expensive it'll be.

I cannot say if the battery life is great because its always plugged in but I did buy this for when i do travel. However, the wife is pregnant so I guess I will not be traveling for awhile. :)

Splurged! I haven't heard much from people upgrading their HDX16's HDD, but I figure it can't be too hard. I guess I just unscrew the bottom panel and pop it in (after I've cloned it with the enclosure). This 7200RPM 500GB drive is supposed to be pretty quick, and obviously spacious :)

Well, I already own one. So my question is about the possibility. Is there anyone who might know if the mainboard of the HDX16 P8400 is compatible with a CPU like T9400? Does anyone know how to upgrade the CPU? I would buy one and replace it myself. But the problem is if its supported by the motherboard already used in my HDX16 1060EG (German version).
Thaks a lot for your help!

I want this computer and the new discount is pretty good for the HDX16 but if I am not gaming or doing any video/photo work and just using it for movies, internet, and watching videos am I better off getting the dv5t? I know the dv5t has to be lighter and more portable but if the difference is minimal i obv want this computer. I just need to know if its annoying carrying this computer around compared to carrying the dv5t. Appreciate your responses.

I would check out the dv6t since they don't make the dv5t anymore. The HDX is going to have a premium price, having the 9600 GT and other stuff as standard, which you won't need if you're not into gaming.

But on the otherhand, the HDX has blu ray and a great 1080p screen, and even decent speakers. It's a great choice for movies, albeit an expensive one.

Got the new blu ray via overnight shipping. took 5 seconds to swap and it worked perfectly. I wish HP hadn't fought so hard on this one, but they did finally relent and honored the warranty and the blu ray drive did in fact die.

    Quick Questions about undervolting:

So the only thing not ticked is 0 correct - which for me is SUPER LFM?
Untick "Auto Adjust intermediate-states VID" --- So we re-check this? I am assuming no.
Do you keep the p-state transition checked right? Doesnt say to remove checks so figure those stay.
Is it ok if the highest multiplier is lower then the second to highest if you dont change them all?
Lastly, it now says 1.70 ghz as opposed to 2.26. Does that mean I lost that much power - from 2.26 to 1.7 all the time? Or is this only for when the laptop gets to 100% cpu?

Well, I had experimented with a Dell XPS 16, and that failed. That laptop was dead in 4 days. So I came across the HP HDX16t, and I seem to like it more than a lot of others, including the XPS from Dell. So last night, I took the plunge, and bought one. I sure hope it works out better than the Dell. Got my fingers crossed! Specs are below. I did price out the RAM options, and it seems it was more beneficial to buy more ram from HP than from say Crucial.com. Also, I got a $500 coupon to apply to it. The rep at HP steered me in the right direction since my company discount would have been far less than the $500. Just a shame they didn't stack the coupons at all. Anyways. We'll see how it goes.

    - HP HDX16t Premium Series Notebook PC
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53GHz)
    - 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
    - 6GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    - 250GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card
    - $50 OFF!! Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - No Productivity Software
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

All totaled with taxes and free shipping: $1430.99. Would have been $1849.99 without the $500 off, and would have been near $1600. with just my company discount!

Also, it's scheduled to be built Feb 13. Hope that's not a bad omen LOL!

    >>One day, just for kicks, I opened the drive door and poked around. The slider that holds the two laser lenses wasn't all the way toward the center of the spindle so I gave it a nudge. Everything works fine now.<<

    Update!!

It seems that my slider adjustment was a coincidence or partial fix. The blue ray discs will only play about every 10th try.

A replacement player is on the way.

Either screen will have a lot of glare. It depends where you work the most, but it doesn't bother me since I'm almost always indoors where it's not super bright. I really like the 1080p res for doing work, browsing, etc, and I recommend it. I game at lower res, and that works fine.

Just to say hi! I bought my HDX16T (1005EA) a couple of weeks ago. My local Staples has a great new HP sales & demo area with an onsite HP rep. They agreed to match the HP online 10% discount price - pity we don't get the 30% discount they get in the US!
Very pleased with it. Plenty fast enough, plenty quiet enough, great screen once you learn to deal with the reflections. Possibly a bit heavy to be carried around too much. Only problem so far is a tendency of ie7 to crash for no obvious reason and the error messages (that are well documented but HP apparently refuse to address) when closing down the computer since installing the HP C6380 printer drivers.

Howdy, all; new to the thread. I just jumped on the bandwagon with the following:

    - HP HDX16t Premium Series Notebook PC
    - Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)
    - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T6400 (2.0GHz)
    - 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    - 500GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    - 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
    - $50 OFF!! Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    - Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
    - Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card
    - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    - 12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - No Productivity Software
    - System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    - HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

I'm not a big gamer, so blazing cpu wasn't a priority. I do travel a lot for work and spend many, many hours on airplanes, so the slower, larger hard drive and 12-cell battery seemed like the most logical configuration. W/the $500 off coupon, the total was just barely more than a thousand dollars. Freaking amazing.

    A few questions:

1-Has anyone got any experience w/the 12-cell battery? What kind of battery life can I expect watching movies?

2-Has anyone successfully located all the drivers necessary to downgrade to XP?

3-If I decide at a later date I want to add some more RAM (only have 2gigs at this point), what would be the right kind to get, and is the process fairly straightforward (I'm really kind of a completely inexperienced newbie regarding all laptop hardware issues)?

    Thanks!

I'd think you'll get about 2.5-3 hours watching a movie at maxed or near max brightness. Lower the brightness and just for internet/office/etc you may get over 4? Can't answer #2. RAM is easy to upgrade, just open a panel on the bottom and swap, but whether you'll need more than 2GB just depends on the software you'll use. Since you're not a gamer, you probably won't need to, although 3GB is the standard these days. My old toshiba with the original core duo, I upgraded to 2GB when I switched to vista, and that's all it needed.

    Hi,

I just ordered a prebuilt HDX16-1040 US - it had everything I needed except a 7200 RPM hard drive, but at $1011 I couldn't beat the price.

I have two questions about swapping out the hard drive. 1) How do I do it and 2) If a hard drive is 7200.3 or 7200.4, what does the .3 and .4 mean?

    Thanks!

The .3 and .4 are different generations of the Seagate hdds. You should be able to just plug in the new one as long as you get the correct format.

How do I ensure it's the right format? Do I pop it into my desktop machine first for that? What about the OS - do I make the recovery disks then re-install? I do have a boxed copy of Vista Home Premium (I built my desktop) - will the license key from the laptop work with that?

Subforums would be really useful here, rather than these threads with 100s of pages. On the other hand, the forums would have hundreds of subforms then which really wouldn't be useful either.

    Thanks!

Why? Despite the press Vista is not evil. We have 3 installations of Vista in our home (not counting the laptop I just ordered): pre-installed Vista 32 on wife's laptop, Vista 64 on my homebuilt quad-core, and I upgraded from XP to Vista on the kids' machine for better parental controls. We haven't had a single Vista-related issue on any machine.

Save yourself the trouble and stick with Vista, I say.

If you're looking at the Seagate 7200.4, it's the latest generation 7200rpm, 500GB SATA 2.5" drive. The Seagate 7200.3 is the 7200rpm, 320GB SATA 2.5" drive. Both will fit in the HDX16.

    Hi guys,
Ordered this configuration yesterday. I'm sure i'll be happy with it. I will upgrade the RAM as soon as i get it. Can you guys recommend a certain good brand. And is it worth it to upgrade to 6GB of RAM or 4 is enough? I will use my laptop for internet browsing and watching video mainly. And are you guys able to use this lappy on your laps? I am heat sensitive and i love to use my notebook on my lap!!

My one concern about the computer I ordered is the screen. Can anyone comment on how 1366 x 768 screen? It's about the same dpi (calculated here) as my current laptop so I don't think I'll notice a difference, but it is in the back of my mind.

    Thanks,

    Paul

There are certain programs I use all the time that are not, and will never be Vista compatible (they are no longer being developed, and I have received confirmation of this; they don't work under the compatibility function for reasons people smarter than I have confirmed). I can run them in XP under virtualbox, or something, but much prefer just using XP when possible. But I guess the answer is a no, huh?

Quick question. I am not all that familiar with the recovery disk stuff since I have never needed them, but I made the discs. Do these discs just restore it to factory condition if something happens? How is this different from the partition that is already on the computer?

It all depend on what you are looking for. I was on the fence also and I read the review and everyone comment in this thread and I came away with HDX16 and was very happy. I have my since Xmax 2008.

I was in the same position. I decided not to pay an extra $600 for a screen. Besides, i read that the Dell generates more heat, so i decided to go with the HP HDX 16.
