That's a misprint redmop, only room for one hdd. You could use the esata to connect to an external hdd if you really needed more capacity.
Alex77, might as well get the T9600 if it is a choice between those two processors.

Someone should tell HP. I just talked to someone at HP (yes, I know the sales guys are very credible) that said I could buy and install a second drive in the HDX16.
Can anyone that has had it open confirm 1 or 2 drives? Maybe with a pic? -
Someone mentioned installing the realtek sound drivers? I have no issues with sound except when I move the volume and treble/bass sliders. It ticks for a few seconds AFTER I let go of the keyboard. Very annoying. Does anyone know how to turn this off? -
Thanks. -
I have the hp hdx16 connected to my denon 4308 receiver using windvd8 to play blu-ray movies. The video is just fine. I am unable to get dts-hd master or true hd to play. Are there any adjustments need to be made to the laptop or program to get this to work. The receiver shows that I am outputting dolby digital only.
Thanks
Jim -
Well the HDX16 just got canned here in Australia zzz - we didn't even get them into the country - they have replaced with the new DV6
-
See page 17-20 of that document. The hard drive sits directly below the RAM modules, and there is virtually no room anywhere else for a second hard drive. Whatever documents that states the HDX 16 supports two 2.5" SATA internal drives is mistaken. -
-
trainmann1, looks good to me, thanx for the pic.
To sum up, there is only room for 1 internal hard drive.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01641278.pdf shows 1 drive, it's correct.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01612461.pdf says dual drives on page 8. It is not correct.
HP pre-sales support says dual drives via a media bay. They are not correct. -
I know somewhere in this thread, there was something mentioned about it, but the solution didn't work.
Does anybody know how to disable the "clicking" sound you hear when you adjust the volume with the touchsmart buttons? An HP rep stated you can't, but I find that hard to believe. Any ideas would be appreciated, as this is pretty annoying. -
I disabled it by muting the media manager thing. (open the volume control mixer). Not quite sure what else i muted by it, but it certainly gets rid of the clicking sound.
-
So i just got my HP HDX16T HP. Ordered it online from hp.com. The thing is i was fully expecting my computer to be a grey black. It turns out my computer was actually bluish grey. Is it suposed to be like this?
-
Anybody have any other ideas on getting that clicking sound that appears when you adjust the volume to go away? -
-
Right click on the volume icon on the task bar and click on Open Volume Mixer. Mute SMOSD.

I just got my tax return and I am ready to get my HDX16t. I have been eyeing this thing for a while now. I have a dv9000 for about a year now (AMD chip) and want to upgrade to the latest and greatest. I configured a machine and it was like 2000 dollars after the 200 off. I will be selling my dv9000 for 500 bucks so that will knock of 500 dollars but its still a little steep. Any current or upcoming coupons/discounts on this thing? In the earlier threads I saw there was a 500 dollar off earlier in the month (cant believe i missed that!!) Is it better to hold off for now or take the plunge? Thanks
-
If you buy today you can use the coupon code NB5463 to get 30% off the total price, it will kick out the 200 instant off but can end up saving you more than 500 if you are spending alot. I think the coupon expires tonight so if you are interested, I would make the move. I've had my HDX16t for a couple weeks now and its def been a great purchase.
-
OP, make sure you get the 12 cell battery. It lifts the computer at a nice angle off the desk and you get that much needed extra juice for longer sessions away from the cord.
Paul -
I second the 12 cell...I opted for the 6 because of weight but its only good for 1.5 to 2 hrs at best...and I also used the 30% off and it was a great deal
J -
You guys ROCK. Ok here are the specs, before the 30% off it comes to 1937.99. Any recommendations or advice before I pull the trigger?

I ordered the laptop and it said they where unable to process the order. I called HP and they said that they cannot explain why the order was declined but the amount shows as a pending charge on my credit card and they are saying only the sales team can tell me what is going on and they are only open M-F. , is this normal? If the order didnt go through why was my card charged?
-
If the order didn't go through it may still show up as pending until HP doesn't clear it and then the charge should just drop off. I didn't have any experience with something like that happening tho, could it be a limit on your card or billing/shipping info issues that would cause it to be rejected?
-
I am so pissed. And with the coupon ending today this sucks big time. I was thinking by next weekend I would have my shiny new toy. I hope to heavens they approve it after calling them Monday and I get the coupon or I will raise hell lol
-
I tried to use the NB5463 coupon today and it wouldn't work, the rep told me it was limited to the first 1800. She ened up still giving me the 30% off deal, so I saved over $700 (if you consider the original price a real value). The coupon code she used was CA5464
Here's my deal ordered today. I'd imagine the coupon is good through March 2, 2009. Good Luck.

CA5464 - invalid. (HP's site reference - The coupon you entered is invalid.) -
What is SMOSD? I a not seeing it in my volume mixer. -
It also shows up as HP Mediasmart.

I was looking at laptops the other day and the HDX16t really caught my eye, however, I couldn't find many reviews for it, and the reviews that I did find were from a while ago, when the laptop was brand new.
Has the HDX16t stood the test of time for you guys?
Would you recommend it for someone who is playing demanding games? (It more than meets the recommended specs, I'm just wondering if in general it is good for gaming) (Dawn of War 2, Fallout 3)
Does HP regularly have great coupons like it does now for a laptop like the HDX16t?
Thanks in advance for your answers. -
I am not sure if its because I am using Vista 64 bit, the framerates were not what I expected. I own a HDX Dragon (20 inch laptop with Vista 32bit) that has a Nvidia 8800 GT video card and that one still blows my 16t out of the water. I assumed when I bought the 16t that the video card (Nvidia 9600) was newer and since it was newer that it'd be 'better'. I found out that its not always the case. Fallout3 gave me 29 fps at medium settings. Then again, it could be the Vista 64 bit. (Fallout3 screams on my HDX Dragon)
Don't get me wrong, its a great laptop. And it can play games fine. But you said 'demanding' and in my opinion and in my case - not all that great.
As for coupons, you have to keep checking those coupon sites like techbargains. They seem to run out of uses within 24hrs and the new coupons seem to come out every 2 weeks.

Hi guys,
I have a dilemma
I want to upgrade my old laptop to something nice, and am torn between to systems.
An HDX 16 with:
2.40 Ghz dual core duo ( P8600 chip )
6 gigs of ram
OR...
An HXD 18 with
2.0 Ghz QUAD core ( QX9000 chip )
4 gigs of ram
both systems have the same video card ( Nvidia with 512megs of ram )
500 gig hard drive.
What would be the faster machine for doing video ?
and what would be the overall faster machine ?
I realize that not all applications will take advantage of a quad-core chip like the QX900, so this is why I"m asking.
Perhaps some of you have bought either of the system, perhaps you have some info, or insight that could help me out.
I'm basically wondering if the dual-core P8600 chip @ 2.40 Ghz in the HP HDX 16 with that 6 gigs of ram will actually be faster overall than the quad core would be, and perhaps even be faster at rendering video ?
thanks for any help, and information. -
How is the build quality? Has it shown any signs of aging in the time you have had it? I only need something to hold me over for a year when it comes to gaming (and I can settle for low detail), but I need this thing to last 3-4 years so I can do schoolwork and such on it.
-
As for the build quality, my HP HDX Dragon (the 16t's Mama) at 2 years still rocking like new so that might tell you something.
Just get a extended warranty to be safe. -
Paul -
My ZD7000 is nearly 5 years old...still going strong. Good thing, too, since I'm going to sell it on ebay. I replaced it with a HDX 16t.
Paul -
You guys have been very helpful, thanks.
-
If you want portability, go with the 16. If you're replacing a desktop, go with the 18 (I have a 17" and it's a bear to lug around...I can't imagine hauling an 18" around!). Either way video rendering isn't going to be instantaneous so I'd base my decision on portability.
Paul -
Does anyone know if I can use the 30% off coupon while using my APP discount?
I'm a student, and I am going to need that 30% off coupon, but would also like to get the APP discount as well.
Thanks in advance! -
My company participates in an employee purchase program - I could use one or the other, not both. The 30% was way more valuable than the EPP discount.
Paul -
With the APP, it seems to only save a couple hundred dollars which is great, but if I had to choose between that and the 30%, hands down the 30% wins. I bet the EPP is a better than the APP anyway.
I have been going to http://www.techbargains.com to look for coupons. Is there another site I should also keep up on as well?
Thanks again. -
Paul -
5 months now and going strong. I just removed that oddly placed energy star sticker because it was just getting on my nerves XD Not sure if I'll take out the nvidia/vista/intel stickers but I'm leaning towards doing it..

would this ram be ok to upgrade to? -
Hi guys,
I'm reading something on another forum, under the Dell laptops,
where a guy says that the laptop ( HDX16 ) that HP is offering with 6 gb of ram is NOT good.
He indicates that having 6 GB of ram in the laptop will turn the dual-channel ram into single-channel.... and reduce the effeciency / speed of the ram.
First off - is this true ?
secondly - if true, why would HP offer this sort of combo ? ... I just don't understand it.
Here is the post by the user who talks about the 6gb of ram turning into single-channel:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=345445&page=219
it is post # 2184 on page 219.
The system that HP is offering with 6GB of ram is here:
http://h20386.www2.hp.com/CanadaStore/Product.aspx?pdetail=P71381&pid=C36581&
Now, I'm very puzzled... I always figured that more ram is a good thing, however it seems you must have either 4 or 8, and NOT 6gb ?? -
-
Thanks for the info "anothergeek"
Ok, I've got a good question for ya also...
I'm still debating on the 2 systems,
both are HP laptops:
system a:
2.40 Ghz ( 1066 fsb ) Dual Core Duo
or
system b:
2.0 Ghz ( 1066 fsb ) Quad core.
Will rendering video be faster with the quad ?
