I would go with at least 2.53 since it has 3mb of cache while the others have 2mb. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

From what I've read, there is not a significant noticeable difference between DDR2 and DDR3. I don't think the HDX16 can be upgraded to DDR3.

As for the TV tuner, I personally won't be getting it because you most likely already have a TV. Plus you can't watch channels off of antenna anymore due to the switching of all channels to digital in the US. The only why you can watch TV via the TV tuner is if you connect it to your cable outlet, which kind of defeats the purpose. It would just be like having another TV connected that you can't move around since its stuck to the outlet.

    Hi All.

    I have a problem with my HDX16.
As you know, when you push the Wi-Fi button (In MediaSmart Panel) - the color was red and switch to blue.
And in my case, when I push the button - I don't have any color's changes!
Has anybody had problems like this?
    Thanks.

That's not correct. All channels will be broadcast in digital, like the HD broadcasts are now. You will still be able to receive signals off the air - cable service is not becoming mandatory. Your tuner just needs to be able to receive ATSC signals.

I don't know about the capabilities of the HP tuner but I picked up one of these and it works great:
    http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr950.html

Costco has them on sale now with an additional $10 rebate.

    http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11313856&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=&lang=en-US

They seem to be out of stock at Costco - here's the same thing at Amazon.

The HP AC Adapter (90 watt Smart Tip KS474AA#ABA ) seems a bit expensive at $100 after coupon/rebate. I've checked other store and that is the groing rate. Is their another option that is cheaper?

    Thanks.

    Hi All,

I just got a HDX16 with Windows Vista Ultimate. Since it's a laptop, it has a
battery meter in the lower right hand corner. I've worked with other laptops
before and when you put the cursor over the battery meter icon, it will tell
you how many hours you have left. However, on this laptop, it only gives a
percentage of the battery left. I've tried looking at the options and
everything, but I can't find anything about changing it to say how many hours
you have left. Does anybody know how to change this or if you can? Thanks!

After going through hoops and hell for HP to honor the 30% coupon that expired after they declined my initial order (due to my area being a high fraud area, whatever that means) I finally got them to build my system and honor the coupon by giving me a back credit. THey said once it ships I will get a credit. Came to $1,923.99 for a pretty sweet system before a 400 back credit, and by the time I ordered it the keyboard backlight option was available! The build date has passed and still no tracking info so i am getting worried again that maybe the parts arent available or Something, specs below, tell me what you guys think

Priestmac, I would say don't go below 4 GB of RAM. 4 should be fine for regular applications and such. I just wanted more so I don't have to mess with upgrading for a while. As for the video quality, I play Fallout 3 at pretty much the highest settings, and it runs fine. Now I don't know if it'd make much difference if I didn't have it, but I do use a cooling pad when playing the game just to help keep the temps down. I use Photoshop some and the screen is sweet for that as well.

Really at this point, the only real complaint I have on the laptop is the memory card reader. For regular SD Memory Cards, they go in quite a ways, and aren't spring-loaded when they're in the laptop. This makes the card somewhat trickey to get out. Have to have some fingernails to get it out. But that's definitely a liveable issue.

    Anyways, hope this helps.

    Good info.

Also, the price did drop for the 1g GPU on the HDX18 models. I am assuming they did for the HDX16 as well.

I believe it was an additional $250 for the upgraded GPU, now it's down to only $125. That is for the HDX18 though, not sure on the HDX16.

Got my laptop a few days ago and I gotta say... I freakin hate vista and all the crap that came on this thing. I could live with it, as I was able to remove and disable most of it, but I foolishly got the 64 bit version of vista, and too many programs I want to use aren't compatible.

Would most or all of these programs be compatible with the 32 bit version of vista? What's the easiest way to switch from this 64 bit version to the 32 bit version? I'm thinking I should just return it and reorder a new one, especially since that was I can take advantage of the backlit keyboard and some other deals that have come up since I ordered this one.

Hey guys, I want to upgrade my 2GB of RAM on my HDX16t up to 4GB of RAM. The problem is I don't know EXACTLY how to buy it (spec) wise.

Can someone give me all the details for the HDX16t in a format such as:

    4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 SO-DIMM 667 (PC2 5300) .... etc.... you get the idea! :)

I just don't know how to choose in terms of the correct RAM. I don't want to buy a high RAM and the computer has to downclock it. And I don't want to buy 4GB of ram and it ends up being being SLOW beause the 16t may run as higher clock!

    Thanks alot guys!

And does anyone know of any good brands I should go for? OCZ? crucial?

Well I just placed my order today with maxed out specs except the TV tuner. I wasn't planning on getting it but after reading around, am starting to regret that I didn't get it. However, I've already submitted and paid for my order. Estimated built date is April 6th.

    # • Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    # • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9800 (2.93GHz)
    # • 8GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    # • 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    # • 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M
    # • 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
    # • Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    # • Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
    # • Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
    # • No TV Tuner w/remote control
    # • Full Size Backlit Keyboard
    # • One 6 Cell and One 12 Cell Lithium Ion Batteries

How hard is it for HP to change my specs or is it even possible? Is that TV tuner really worth it? Thanks.

They can't change the order once it's placed - you'll have to return it and reorder.

I bought an external TV tuner ( http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-Win...?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1237809690&sr=8-1). If you find you really need to watch TV on your laptop you could get something like that.

Yeah thanks, but I wanted to the integrated one. Just got off the phone with HP. No go. They can't change anything once the order has been placed. They offered to cancel the order and start again but the 25% off coupon could not be applied since its expired. Oh well, I hope that tuner isn't all thats its cracked up to be.

Same issue here. I called HP today to find out why my build date has lapsed...they told me some of my parts were not in stock, however, i politely requested that they upgrade my shipping to 2 day for the delay and they were happy to do that...and throw in a $50 gift certificate as well!

I find the TV Tuner to be mostly useless. It does work, and does grab the HDTV signaals, but the signal must be very strong for it to work. Inside a house, the reception is not good, not really usable on most channels (that is in Miami area at least).

I wish I had saved my money, I'll never use the tuner.

I will. I ordered a Hauppauge tuner ( http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hvr950q.html), which works great by the way.

I'm deploying in a week to the middle east and where I'll be living my room will have a cable connection. I'm not bringing a TV and I'm not buying a TV while there. I watch very little TV at home but there are a few shows I like, plus sports. Since I'll be working nights I'll probably be asleep when anything I want to watch is on. I figure I can hook up the tuner, set it to record what I want, and watch it when I want.

We have TiVo at home but I think a tuner would be a good substitute for someone without a DVR, especially since the computer has HDMI out.

Ive been following this laptop for a little while now and I need to make a decision soon on what I want to get. Battery life is a deciding factor for me.
The 6 cell for basic web browsing is ~3 hours of life. Could anyone tell me what the 6 cell is like for gaming?
What about the 12 cell for browsing and gaming?

I've been searching through most of this thread. Cant really find a straight up answer. thanks.

There is no straight up answer, that's why. The processor draws power depending on its needs. The screen draws power depending on the power management setting - is it on "high performance" where the screen is bright even on battery, or perhaps it's on "HP recommended", which dims the screen when the laptop is unplugged. How much is the disk being accessed? Is the optical drive running all the time? Any USB peripherals connected?

Don't overthink this too much. No one with a 12 cell battery has ever wished they had a 6 cell instead, so buy the 12 cell battery. If you can't afford the 12 cell battery then this discussion is moot because you have to get the 6 cell battery anyway.

You don't get a high-performance computer because it has long battery life. You get it for performance and hope for decent battery life. If you're looking for 6 hours of gaming (other than Minesweeper) then you'll be disappointed. The 12 cell battery will let you get by when you're in between plugs, but you're not going to a LAN party and spend the night on battery, that's for sure.

Thanks Paul. But I was referring to the quality of the TV tuner. I'm trying to look for reassurance that it sucks so I won't be hitting myself over the head for not ordering it. For your needs, it looks like the tuner is necessary.

I too have been researching this laptop for at least 2 months and I knew coming in that the battery life was going to suck. But thats ok. Yes battery life will vary between users as some have lower processors and HDDs etc. Also depends on the settings, if you use power save or max performance etc. Therefore, battery life can't be accurately gauged. However, I've read everywhere that the 6cell is only good for 3 hours max, if you try to conserve power.

This is why I ordered both batteries. This is a desktop replacement laptop, so being so powerful, battery life will suck. Plus if you really need to be online 10 hours a day with battery, then buy a net book like I did. They last up to 9 hours.

How many times are you going to bump this? Let's try a little ingenuity instead of waiting for people to give you answers!

Have you tried removing the RAM currently installed and reading the sticker on it? Scroll down a bit on this page:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...t=3772041&lang=en&docname=c00820047#MaxMemory

You can also look up the right type at Crucial's web site.

I have no idea how long the 12 cell would last. I'll post once I get mine but I'm guessing double of the 6.

Thats not a a bad deal. However, I suggest you wait for one of those 25-30% off coupons HP sometimes have. Just google "hp coupons". You could get a better spec'ed laptop for the same money or less. I used the 25% off one with a maxed out spec HDX16 and saved $800.

I don't know that. You can try. Pretend you are putting in an order. Do checkout, then type your name address etc. Then proceed. The page where it asks for your credit card info, there should be a space for coupons.

Thanks for that info. Ill check it out.

One last thing though: does the hdx16t uses RAM that is 667mhz or 800mhz at best?

question, is the bluetooth in the 16t integrated into the wireless card or is it a separate module. If its a stand alone module, anyone know where I can buy one. Thanks a million.

Actually, it depends on whether you ordered 2GB DDR3 or DDR2. You'll have to get a DDR3 800MHz RAM for the former (much more $$) or 800/667MHz DDr2 RAM for the latter.

My build date has been postponed a third time now, was supposed to be built and shipped Mar 19th last week but it has been redone 3 times due to component shortage. This laptop has taken me over a month to order and I ams till waiting for it to ship. I have never had the customer experience with any company that I have had with HP. I will never order from HP anymore

What did you order? My laptop was built, shipped, and arrived before the original ship date.

I will never order from anyone but HP, so my post therefore cancels your post :p

Why don't you call up HP and complain? I've read others that did that and got $50 gift cards etc. One dude got $500 off and free upgrades since he ed so much.

Mine is set to be built by April 6th. I ordered it March 22nd. To me that is a long lag time. If it doesn't get shipped by 4/6, I'm gonna to HP.

Im in the UK and have 1 of the HDTV hybrid tuners for sale (specifically the one which came with my hdx16t) I dont need it as I do not get ATSC signals, I am in the UK. So yes its for sale but doesnt come with the 5 inch cable to take the card antenna output to the side of the laptop .
im using an avermedia 306 card instead of the a317 which is the USA hybrid , why do you have to be different to the rest of the world with your TV standards again lol.
Must be to make the TV's region specific to a point, to keep prices fixed.

So you have the one that come inside the HDX16, the internal one? If so might be interested in buying it. What is it missing, that cable. Is it a crucial part? Let me know or PM me. Thanks.
