Well here's my third attempt at this notebook.

HP HDX16t Premium Series Notebook PC
    • Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    • Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8700 (2.53GHz)
    • FREE Upgrade to 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • FREE Upgrade to 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive from 250GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
    • 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    • 16.0" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
    • Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    • Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)
    • Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
    • No TV Tuner w/remote control
    • HP Color Matching Keyboard
    • 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    • System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
    • No Productivity Software
    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

I upgraded the processor and the hard drive on this one. I've sent two back and hopefully I'll be happy with this one. The issue I was having with the scroll function on my other ones is hopefully fixed with a driver update tech support had me install. This is the last chance I'm giving HP.

My nearly fully loaded HDX-16t came in and I'm extremely happy with it. One thing I'm unsure about is dust eventually getting under the screen. Optimustarzan, have you or any other long time users of the HDX-16t had problems with dust under the screen?

Someone else on this forum has to be experiencing the same problem with the vertical scroll function that I am. I can't be the only person to get the only 2 defective laptops. It has just quit working on me twice in the past hour but it came back after a few minutes. This time it happend after exiting full screen on a video I was watching on megavideo. Most of the other times it has happened when I was on youtube. I really like this computer but this annoying piece of is starting to get to me. Someone else has to have experienced the same thing.

Edit: I think I figured it out. It happens when I go full screen and then exit out of it. It just did it on youtube again. What could cause this? Is can't be normal for it to do this. Can someone please try this to verify that I'm not crazy and just imagining this. Go to youtube and start a video and then make it full screen. Let it play for a little bit and then exit out of full screen. The vertical scroll should stop working temporarily.

One of the reasons you're not seeing others complain about this issue is that a lot of us are using mice and not the touchpad. I experienced this issue after following your instruction. I believe this is driver related. Maybe they'll release a patch to address this issue. But like I said, I'm a mouse user so this doesn't bother me at the moment. Do you have a mouse handy while the issue is resolved?

A little late with the question, since you're using the laptop now. :D

I'm using my HDX16 in a very dusty middle eastern place with the military, been here 2 months. No dust under the screen.

No I don't have a mouse but I've been thinking about getting a bluetooth one. I mostly use the touchpad though. It's kind of annoying, When I called tech support they had me install a driver off the HP website but it obviously didn't help.

There is a crack between the screen and the frame that dust could theoretically get under i guess, but there's no bigger chance of it getting under there then it getting under your keyboard. A little late since you bought it, lol. But i don't believe it will be a problem.

I had this problem too. but it seemed to fix itself for me
make sure that you have an audio out or built in speakers to your t.v. And plug in the hdmi cable before starting the application, like windows media center or a game or something, and it also takes about a minute for mine to register.

    I love this laptop
My biggest complaint is the battery life. but it's acceptable with the 12 cell battery i got.

the keyboard might be the best part (aside from the preformace :D). It's just amazing.

oh, and the audio is awesome too.

The only thing i'm wondering is if getting the 1900x1200 res. screen worth sending mine backn. i got the 1366x768. as far as im concerned it works fine. but would the higher res be worth it?

    Hey shadnezzar,
It seems like your laptop has the same specs that I wanted to but I was told that the 1gb Geforce GT 130m wouldn't help much. How is it working out for you?

The 30% and $250 coupon has expired, does anyone know when the next comes out?

Yea im right there with u. i had the same desire thats why i shipped mine in to use the 30% off coupon to get the 2.66 processor and the 130m gt. =). unless your going to be watching blue ray on ur laptop alot and not through HDMI on your tv then i would say not bother.

I use four of my machines on the docks in Houston, TX (first 4 in my signature lines) and have not had problems with dust.

And Radish5 - just wanna say thanks for all you guys and gals do over there. I am a retired wing nut and spent alot of time deployed over in the sand box away from home.

Oh, now I understand your question. Yes I too experience this, but I think it is normal. It happens when I maximize the screen to full view when watching a video like on youtube etc. I thought this was an issue but since both of my laptops are doing it, leads me to assume it is a Vista issue.

Yes its annoying but it always start to work again.

I've had a hdx16 since March but my replacement is less than 2 months old. However, I don't have any dust inside the screen, yet. Make sure you clean it down once a week and I never take mine outside.

For me it was worth it since things just look sharper. However, note that your desktop and website text will look really small. You can however decrease the resolution. I got used to it and have no regrets about it.

The 130m is basically an updated 9600m with smaller circuit die and 512 more ram, making it only 17% faster. However, I think its great as I can play crysis warhead at max settings. Crysis is one of the most demanding games.

The 30% off coupon comes once a month. Its been like that since February when I started to track it. Expect the next one mid July.

I recommended that if a user is getting the 720p screen to get the 9600M since the 130M would not provide much of an improvement in that resolution. Higher memory usually helps with higher resolutions. And since the 130M is an updated 9600M, the improvements noticed (if any) won't be that much. Maybe a few FPS gained.

I'm pretty sure shadnezzar is enjoying the 130M but I bet he would not notice a difference if the video card was swapped :D.

Thanks for that and all your long service too. I haven't hit 20, yet. I did over 10 years on active duty and I'm finishing out my time in the Reserves. I volunteered to come back over here, which some of my civilian coworkers thought was crazy, but sometimes you have to do your part. Military people get that :D

That's great man. I got the 9600GT and can't quite play Cyrsis @ MAX yet. I haven't overclocked my GPU yet either though.

I kind of wish I would have got the 130m, but I am on a college student budget and it wasn't worth the extra money for me. I'll be getting a SSD w/ that money I would have spent upgrading the GPU.

But yeah, lots of people get them early, so keep checking the FedEx tracking site, especially in the AM.

Do you guys know how often the 30% coupon is released? After a $200 and $250 stackable rebate and with a free hard drive and memory upgrade it came out to $2048.99 (before tax). Would I be getting it cheaper if I were to return it and wait until the 30%, or is it an infrequent coupon for the HDX-16?

As I have said 100 times, once a month. Expect the next one in the middle of July. Do a google search for "hp coupons". Depending on how much you spend, you would save more. I saved $1000 on my $3200 configuration.

Which brand of cooling pad would you recommend for the HDX16? There has obviously been some talk of this in this thread, but I couldn't find any specific recommendations.

    Many thanks.

That makes a lot of sense. "I don't post to the site I'm linking to, the one where I've put a guide."

Sounds like instead of participating here you've set up your own website and you're trying to drum up business for it. Classy.

No, he doesn't have anything to do w/ that site. Matter of fact he just joined on there to put that guide up. I thought it was pretty dam good. :) Gaines put the HPHDX site together. I am a mod on there as well.

He isn't trying to do any business, neither are the rest of us on there. We don't even have anything set up for donations. We just wanted to put something together that made it a little easier to find answers to questions about the HDX18 and HDX16.

It can be rather frustrating cycling through 1000's of posts and 100's of pages to find answers.

That's all. It's all there to hopefully help people. ;)

Ok I spent a lot of time writing that guide. It's really sad you have to say that. I knew someone would say something like this which is why I clearly stated that I don't post on either site. I just visit both a lot and decided to post the guide over there instead of here is because it will get lost in this huge thread. I have no affiliation with the other site. If anything, you should appreciate what the admin did over there. I'm sure he got a lot of info from here anyways. Not to mention, some of the things I wrote about I didn't see anywhere else, because I figured it out (I'm not saying its impressive, just not documented), which is why I wrote it up. Think again before you bash somebody, especially when they take the time to help other people, like you.

Ok, well, I'll take your word for it because you're legit, even if you are a Red Wings fan (Lions and Tigers too?). ;) His post sounded sketchy though...new user, only joins here to advertise for another site. Why not post the guide here? There are HP mods...maybe they can create a sticky post for his guide.

As I posted above, it's suspicious when someone joins a forum just to post links to another site. Hell, I did some searches before I visited the site just to make sure it wasn't a malware or phishing site. Had Rageman posted a link to the guide I wouldn't have had any qualms about the post or the site...but a new person who says "I post nowhere...check this cool thing out on another site!"? Still suspicious. Not any more, of course, since Rageman vouched for you, but initially, yes.
