Well...not exactly always with high bass songs. I listen to trance, ambient and sometimes pop. The sound usually crackles when playing a bit high-pitched sounds I think (like a female voice in a pop...not always though). And I'm talking about the built-in altec lancing speakers. External ones run fine with the IDT audio...although sometimes I need to disable the dolby.

And I'm also noticing some other issue (don't know if that's an issue or it's normal). When my laptop's battery charge is going down below 20%...if I plug in the adaptor and keep working (in any power mode)...it says 'Plugged in, charging)...but it actually doesn't charge. While I keep working with the charger on...the battery level stays the same. It only gets charged if I stand-by or shut down the laptop that time. Please help...does it happen with everyone? Is it normal or not? Thanks...

    Hi

I'm new here. Looking forward to take advantage of the 4th of july sale with free 4gb ram, bluray and 320gb 7200rpm hard drive upgrades.

I would like to ask you whether or not is the keyboard backlight switchable to off when not needed (during daylight) ?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes. It's manual. You have control to turn it on or off (fn + spacebar).

It's a small port (smaller than a pencil) by the power port. You can either plug in the HDTV antenna that HP gives you or the Coaxial Adapter that HP also gives you. You then plug in your coaxial feed, sat, cable, antenna, etc into that adapter.

Sorry for jumping into wrong board room.
But I thought it wil be the right place to get answered.

I'm confused among Dell SXPS 16 and HP HDX16t. Now both are approx same price with ...
    1. P8600 processor
    2. 4GB RAM
    3. 320 GB 7200 rpm HDD
    4. 16' LCD
    5. 512 MB ATI/nVidia Graphics card
    6. Intel wireless
    7. 6 cell battery

Then its very difficult to choose one among them. Its a tough competition and putting me in trouble. Can you help me out ?

many people come here asking that question and i always tell them the same thing.

I too was in you position and i ended up going with the HDX over the XPS for a couple of reasons.

    1. the monthly 30%off coupon saved me 500$ on the HDX
    2. the XPS is known to get very warm due to poor ventilation.
    3. the HDX offered a better graphics card at the time.
    4. The HDX offers a backlit keyboard that the XPS does not.

    Hope this helps

I got the XPS16 before I got the HDX16. I had the XPS for 4 days, and in those 4 days, the laptop was always hot to touch on top and bottom, and I got the Blue Screen of Death 4 times, and the 4th time, it was going to require a complete reload. I sent it back to Dell. I hadn't installed anything on it at that point as I was still trying it out, so nothing I did should have caused the BSOD's.

Other people on the Dell forum are happy with this laptop, but others have experienced this BSOD issue as well if you read thru there. Just my experience. So far, I've had the HDX16 for a couple months now, and I am extremely happy with it. I like the screen a lot better on the HP as well.

    Hope this helps.

Anyone know if the HDX16 have an MXM slot? Can the GPU be upgraded after I buy the system, or is it soldered on the motherboard?

I just got my HDX16 and I am having a problem with the internet. I've tried wireless and plugging the ethernet cord directly in the laptop.

I can get on but the connection drops and just kicks me off. After rebooting a few times I can get access again for a few minutes. I know it's not my internet because my desktop is working fine.

I haven't deleted any files or anything.

What can I check to help me keep continous access?

I too was considering the xps16 but upon reading their thread, I found numerous complaints of heating issues and blue screen of deaths upon update. The Dell has newer tech such as ddr3 and RLED screen or something but all those are worthless if you get bsods and overheating.

That and the hdx16 has everything the dell has plus a better gpu, and 30% coupon, making my max spec'ed $1000 cheaper than a same spec Dell, I went with HP.

I don't know what a MXM slot is but if you are refering to a SD card reader, yes it has. I have 3 kinds of SD cards and it can read all of them. No, the GPU can't be upgraded since it is soldered on. That is why you should get the best GPU they offer if you can, since things like CPU and memory can be upgraded but not GPU.

FYI, Dell SXPS16 has backlit keyboard (optional). Yes, Dell SXPS16 had the unusual heat problem. But surprised where you got monthly 30% off ?? How can I avail this discount ? and what is the MP of the webcam ? And HDX has DDR2 ram where as XPS has DDR3 ram. And the XPS ATI graphics card is better that HDX nVidia graphics card. Any comments on these ?

A quick question guys, I have the HP HDX16 1370US which has a 2.27 gigahertz Intel Core2 Duo P7550 CPU. Thinking to the future can someone inform me or point me in the right direction to find out what the potential CPU upgrades are for this machine.
    Thanks

    Hello Everyone,

I just joined this forum after doing the Google search on the HP HDX 16t.

From this forum, I learned that I could configure this HP laptop from the Costco site and that was a kickass find! I saved nearly $250 as compared to going straight to the HP site for the same config. So thanks for that. I ordered this rig for my brother so I hope he’ll be happy with it…. And no I didn’t pay for it, he did.

Anyhow just wanted to ask for the overall opinion on this laptop. Let’s here it all please; The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Thru Costco, you get a 90 day return so if it does not meet his needs, back it goes.

After doing a sh*t load or research, I believe you get more bang for the buck thru HP then most others, probably due to sheer volume. Couple that with a great price from Costco, can you really beat it?

    Just a few general questions:

We ordered the backlight keyboard. Can the lighting on that keyboard be turned off to try to save some power?

What does everyone here think of the 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M GPU?

That’s it for now. Thanks again for the great tip on Costco!

FYI: So does the HP HDX16, backlit keyboard. Not to mention it has full number pad, not found on the dell. If you do alittle research, you can find details about the coupon. I posted about it 1000 times and am not about to do it again. Just do a search and read. The camera is 1.3MP. The GPU of the hp is better than the one on the dell. I'm not going to tell you why since it has been discussed before, do a forum search.

I got mine customized straight from HP so I can't comment on Costcos.

Yes you can turn off the backlit, just on or off, no brightness level.

The 130m pwns every game I throw at it, even crysis warhead, which is really demanding specs wise.

Hi, I was wondering what temps you guys are getting for your HDXs. I own a 1140us but recently my CPU temps are brimming near 60C on idle. Is this a sign to replace the thermal grease or are there other problems? Thanks.

Well, I would either try what Optimus suggested, and if that doesn't work, you may want to check into the possibility of it being your router. I had a Linksys router that I purchased back in 2005. XP and older worked fine on that wireless/wired router. But when I got the HDX16, w/ Vista, the laptop would have sporatic wireless connection issues like you have. All other devices worked fine.

After updating drivers didn't help, I found in other forums that some "Pre-Vista" routers had this connectivity issue. I went out and bought a new Linksys Wireless N router, and it now works like a charm. I don't have the model numbers with me at the moment, but I can send that if you need it. Weird issue, but with the new router, all devices work fine!

    Hope this helps.

Lately, I've been removing unneccessary things and I should be done by tomorrow.

    @Zilthai

Dude I am/was also having the same problem...

First I had the problem twice while the charge level went down below 20%...then I had to turn the laptop off or put it in stand by mode to let it get charged again...

But then again I had the problem when the charge level was at 79%...I also ran HP battery check and it told me to replace the battery. I turned the laptop off and removed the battery keeping it outside for 2 minutes and then placed it back in. After that when I booted up again it I saw that it was charging and the battery check said that it's in good condition. So you might do the same once to see if it's working for you or not. But I don't really know what's causing the problem...

I am also having another problem that most of the times my media smart bar's volume control functions isn't working after I'm booting the laptop...and it's hanging the explorer when I use it (even while using the same functions with the remote control)...but sometimes it's working fine. Any help anyone?

    @avion

Thank you. But as per my research, SXPS16 has the latest and advanced hardware than HDX16t (its upto you to admit or not) . And the ONLY reason I asked my question here, is due to the heat problem of SXPS16, else Dell XPS 16 is the right choice. :p

Like I said before, yes it does have newer tech, like ddr3, and the RLED screen. BUT, those things are irrelevant when you get blue screens and overheating all the time. I visited the xps16 thread and saw numerous complaints about it. Those issues, plus the hdx16 was $1000 cheaper after the coupon, is why I went with HP.

    Here ya go man.

    http://www.techbargains.com/vendor_detail.cfm/296/HP-coupon-code

    http://www.cheapstingybargains.com/cheapster/hp-hp-small-business/

The BIG coupons come out every month or so. Check DAILY! Usually they only last for 1000 or so uses.

But yeah, you can get the 30% off coupon (which is probably the best) or they have $400 off/$500 off too. Just keep checking to see what's best for you. ;)

I assume your devices are still plugged in after you eject them. Ejecting a device logically removes it from the OS but does not power down the USB port. The USB ports are always on...that's how come a cable I have to charge a Nintendo DS via the USB port works. The DS doesn't show up as a device...the cable just draws power from the port.

"Eject" is just to allow you to safely remove a device. In fact, that's what I use instead of eject - the "safely remove" option.

If you are that convinced that the XPS16 is that much better, and the price is that much better, and you can't wait on a better coupon in a couple days/weeks, then go with the XPS16. We have given the opinions on why we like the HDX better, and that's it. Not sure who you're trying to convince of the Dell Laptop. I know I got one, it overheated, and did in fact get 4 BSOD's in 4 days. I sent it back, got my money back, waited on HP to have a deal, ordered my HDX, and it works great!

If you want the XPS, go with it.

Are you talking about the icon next to the clock in the system tray? Mine shows the battery remaining amount.

Right click the taskbar, click properties, then choose the notification tab, then select POWER.

Thanks, but I'm talking about battery time remaining. When you hover over the battery icon, it should say time remaining and amount remaining, but on HPs, it only shows time left.

Thanks but the times seem to be off. Currently I have 90% left on my battery and batterybar says I only have 1:19 minutes left.
