Cant that be considered false advertising? Before I ordered it I did alot of research on it and everything that I saw said it had space for 2 hard drives. Even when I ordered over the phone the CSR asked me if I wanted to hard drives.

Well since I already have the purchased 500 gig second hd, how do I go about copying all the files from the old hd?

I got mine as a gift a year ago, but I think the model has been around since 2008.

Personally I like it and I'm not normally fond of laptops due to their proprietary hardware and tendency to break down pretty easily. However, if you get one I would recommend getting the RAM upgrade. I thought that 4 Gigs would be enough for me but it can be pretty limited due to Windows Vista and its memory eating ways.

I have a HDX X16-1140US which I am going to restore to factory settings and then upgrade to Windows 7. I like my laptop but ever since I first got it I have had an odd issue with HP Protectsmart. Sometimes when I move around with my computer and put it back on a fat surface HP Protectsmart does its job but then Windows crashes and I get a kernel_stack_inpage_error along with the BSOD. I have updated Protectsmart multiple times but this still happens. I found out my HD was made by Seagate so I ran their SeaTools for DOS and it didn't report any problems with the Short or Long test so I think my HD is fine. I even talked to HP's technical support and uninstalled and reinstalled the driver for it but I still have the same problem. I'm thinking of opening my system up and checking to see if there's anything wrong with the cables. Any suggestions?

Basically, if you want to find out, you have to open up the HDX and look on the mobo for the PLL.

Though, most HP notebooks of that series used TME locked PLLs which require hardware pin modification in order to overclock.

If you had a x9100, you could overclock that using Unclewebb's Throttlestop program.

I have the HP HDX16, model: X16-1375DX laptop

Anyone ever experience this error message when trying to install Win 7?

"windows could not set the offline locale information. Error code 0x80FF0000"

I contacted HP and they told me I need the "RC1 Patch for the BIOS", not sue what that patch is for. Anyway, they wanted to charge me $170 to extend the warranty so they could get me the patch for the BIOS since it was 20 days past the warranty period, I said no thanks obviously.

Any help would be great, thanks.

No it doesn't. It's soldered to the board. ONly HDX that has an MXM is HDX 9000.

Hey guy, I know this question should be old but I don't think people have a good solution for that. My question is why the chasic fan (the fan near the HDD if you open the HDD cover and on the left side near the touch pad) making the rattling sound whenever I boot up from the cold start. Some people indicate that fan is bearing but I did take out all the part of the HDX and looked at the fan. The fan looked fine, no crack, nothing wrong with that. I even cleaned out the dirty and put it back, but nothing change, still hearing the loud sound when booting. I wonder if purchase a new chasic fan could solve this problem. Let me know your thinking.

No I wasn't I apparently the GPU is soldered onto the board. I guess at this point I need buy a new laptop, but I love mine. So maybe I have to find a way to purchase and install new motherboard with a MXM slot that will fit inside HDX16t case. Does anyone know if this is possible?

    On another note:

Has anyone successfully installed a 12.5mm HDD in there HDX16t? I want a 1TB HDD.

I couldn't find this anywhere on the website, but does anyone have any information on the LCD Panel that comes on the 1080p HDX16t? My Nvidia Control Panel says it is a Seiko Laptop Display, but I can't see anything more specific then that. So does anybody have a more specs regarding or a link the display on the HDX16t 1080p Seiko LCD Screen?

    Thanks

The only motherboard relatively similar to the HDX16 would be the 1st gen dv6t. These computers look identical to HDX16s but they are entirely black, not the dark blue look of an HDX. im sure youve seen these before. best buy, walmart, etc. all carried them. you must make sure it is a 1st Gen board, (Core2duo support) because the 2nd gen of dv6ts have the same board, but utilize i3/i5/i7 support. while the CPU upgrade would be nice, if you want to use your HDX parts over you would need the first board.

Since MBs are made proprietary to each manufacturer, you cant just throw in any motherboard. Quanta electronics (manufacturer of every laptop mobo in existence) creates boards according to Mfg. specs from HP, dell, acer, toshiba, etc. so basically, 1 size doesnt fit all.

The reason i say the dv6t is because it is the same physical size as the HDX16, as well as the ports on it are identical. i am unsure as to its graphics capability, not sure if it has an MXM slot or if the GPU is soldered to the board. you'd have to search the net for pics to be certain. However, if you have a backlit keyboard on your HDX, it will be rendered useless by swapping boards. HP dropped support for backlit keyboards after the HDX was discontinued, so if you look closely on the new board it will have a spot where the connector is SUPPOSED to be, but their is no connector soldered there nor does it output voltage on those solder pins. I've tried to put an HDX backlit keyboard in a dv6, and those were my findings. If you don't have a backlit keyboard than you have nothing to worry about. :)

Hey guys, has anyone replaced the wireless card on the laptop? My HDX16 laptop recently has been losing connection to the router. I thought maybe interference was causing the issue but I brought the laptop close to the router and it still disconnected. I'm thinking maybe the wireless card is going bad as this started to happen all of a sudden and I never had a problem with it before. Is it possible to replace the wireless card?

    Hello everyone,

I have a HDX 16t and recently came across an issue where the CD-ROM drive is not recognizing any kind of media. When I put a CD in the drive, it would attempt read media and I can hear the drive try to spin along with a strange humming sound, after several seconds the drive eventually stops making any noise. At that point, I would double-click on the optical drive in My Computer and I get an error "Insert a Disc" and the drive opens up right away. This issue comes up any kind of disc. I have also attempted to bootup with a bootable CD to ensure that it is not an OS Issue, unfortunately, it fails to read at that level too.. Same type of noise.

About 6 months ago, I upgraded it to Windows 7 (complete rebuild) from original factory install of Vista and during that rebuild process, I forgot to install software that would play Blu-ray. So about a week ago, I realized that I couldn't play any Blu-rays (of course, other media type such as DVD were working), thus, I installed Mediasmart, which didn't recognize any Blu-Ray formats. I even installed PowerDVD thinking that would let me play Blu-ray movies, and no luck there either. I just thought I would call that out here that this was the most recent change or similar incident that had happened. Like I said, even during this troubleshooting process, I was able to play non Blu-ray.. So I don't know what would have caused the hardware to fail like this (I guess that's hardware, one never knows when things go bad).

Does anyone have suggestions on what else I can do to troubleshoot this further or is it pretty much concluded that the drive is gone bad and would need to purchase a new one? And if so, should I order it directly from HP or are there other recommendations? Looks like the part number I would need to order from HP is "498074-001 In stock Exchange 2
Blue-ray Disc (BD) SATA optical drive (Bronze) - With LightScribe". Any concerns with ordering the "Exchange 2" (Looks like refurb to me) tagged part from them rather the original as there is a considerable amount of difference in price.

    Thank you,

    Manoj

I don't know if you got it fixed yet, but you can just download the Windows 7 driver from HP.com. I've been running it for a long time now and haven't had a driver issue yet.

    Hi.
My gpu sensor (9600m gt) on my HDX 16-1060EG is showing an idle temp of around 75°C and going up to 100° under full load.
So I started to worry (gpus are quite delicate) and called the HP support. The guy there then toled my that my HDX16 does not have a gpu sensor and gpu-z just tells me random numbers...
But since a lot of people referred to their gpu temps on their HDX16 I choose to believe that there is a sensor (I mean it shows me a temperature so there has to be one, right?)
I am a little bit worried because my laptop does get hot from time to time but I'm not shure wheather it is related to the gpu. (Right now the gpu is supposed to run around 80°C, but the casing does not feel really hot) So I thought that maybe the sensor indeed does not work correctly...
So my question would be if someone can tell me where the gpu is exeactly located so i could check if the casing gets especially hot there (I mean at 80-90° it should be boiling hot around there, right?)

    Many thanks
    Trink-Bar

    Hi,

Can I ask if you ever got this fixed? I have just upgraded from Vista 64-bit to W7 64-bit and have also lost the ability to play Blu-rays. I have also installed Mediasmart but it hasn't helped.

The drive is being recognized as a HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW CT10L ATA. The driver is from Microsoft dated 21/06/2006 version 6.1.7600.16385. I've not managed to find anything newer.

I have tried deleting the drive in Device Manager and running the Microsoft troubleshooter but they don't help.

    Any ideas please?

I tried replacing my Intel 5100AGN with an Apple Broadcom 94322MC card with no luck eventhough I flashed my HDX16 with a modded bios (wlan whitelist removed).

Aside from the Intel 5100 card, an Atheros AR9280 card is also supported as stated in the service manual.

For the Blu ray issue you need to install HP MediaSmart DVD software
    from http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-drivers-software-forum/519991-popular-hp-notebook-software.html
or any other Blu ray playing software. I have Mediasmart DVD and it works after clean install of Win 7 from Vista

HOORAY! I FIGURED OUT HOW TO GET THE MICROPHONE(S) WORKING!

This is on Mint XFCE 201104 (the newest rolling release), but I suspect it will be similar for other distros as well.

First, for the HP HDX16, you need to add the following to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:

    options snd-hda-intel model=hp-hdx

Though some HP laptops may also need:

    options snd-hda-intel model=hp-m4

The machine has 2 mics, but apparently only 1 is being recognized (I don't know if its a HW fault, but I somehow doubt it).

In the ALSA Mixer, the device is called "Capture", and to select it as a source you need to make it visible using the Select Controls button at the bottom. Each "Capture" device has 2 sliders: the one on the left has a link button under it to cause the 2 sliders to move in sync, and the one on the right has the selector button to make the device active (this was a point of confusion for me, since to make it active you click on the button and it turns red; I thought that would mute the microphone the way clicking on the buttons on the speakers controls do). On my machine there is a "Capture 1" device that I thought was the 2nd mic, but I don't think it is; the 2 sliders may represent both physical mics as one logical device, but frankly I'm not going to tinker with it now that its working.

However, confusingly, the Pulseaudio Volume Control panel calls this device “Microphone 2“. To set Pulseaudio to see it, in the Pulseaudio control panel go to the Input Devices tab > Internal Audio Analog Stereo > Port: Microphone 2.

This may not be quite as technical as some other posts hereabouts, but it seems to have been something that no one has been able to puzzle out, and I figured it would be a nice thing to document once and for all.

Guyz, how is your idle temperatures? I'm struggling with heat on my hp hdx16, I cleaned it yesterday and it didn't change much - and there wasn't too much dust anyways inside.

I've p7350, and I want to upgrade to something tougher. I'm wondering if any of you guyz have done this, and how is heat handling with higher end cpu?

    thx.

p.s. did you perform any cooling modifcation? like drilling case changing fan or even modding heat sink? please let me know if you know some tricks to keep hdx16 cool.

    p.p.s. I've cooling pad.

    Hi,

Been lurking for a bit getting information, but decided to post a problem I have with my HDX16.

Was using the computer regularly for the past 2 years, then randomly last week, it just BSODs.

When restarting, it gets to the start-up screen with the moving bar on the bottom then BSODs again. Safe Mode doesn't work and even though it says a system restore using a restore point is successful, it BSODs the same.

Tried to do a factory reset, but BSODs during the reset....

Tried replacing the HD, same BSOD. BIOS Memory test seems to think it's not the memory so I'm thinking it might be the motherboard or something. I'm not really good with computers so I'm not sure so I figure I could ask here to see if anybody has any prior experience or advice.

Now, I can't even get to the factory reset screen before it BSOD. :(

This might have already been answered, but as the case with all of these official "Owner's Lounge" threads direct responses and answers are spread out over 300 freaking pages. Not ideal for someone time strapped to find a solution.

Anyway, I have been wanting to put a matte screen protector on my screen for a few months now for various reasons. However, I have quite a bit of silver paint "scuff marks" on my screen now that I am assuming quite many of you are familiar with. I have no desire to put a screen overlay on top of those marks.

Has anyone found an effective way to get rid of that silver paint residue from the keyboard without ruining the integrity of the screen?

The only true way to get rid of the paint/scratch marks from the lid closing onto the keyboard is to completely replace the plastic "lens" that covers the screen from corner to corner (like Mac's edge-to-edge glass). For me,
Those marks seem to be rather permanent, which is why I am saying that replacing the entire piece of plastic might be the only viable option. (eBay) You could try scrubbing it, but I highly doubt that it will be effective.

If and when you do get it replaced, you could always clear coat the keyboard (removing the keyboard from the laptop, of course) to try and prevent any more of the silver paint from coming off.

That's what I was afraid of hearing. Currently in college and don't have much money, or time. *sigh* Alright though. When I do have the resources that is excellent advice. I hadn't considered clear coating the keyboard, but it makes perfect sense.

lol I've had my HDX16 for 2 years now. Still working well, but I am planning to move up to the Sager NP8130/Lotus P151HM1.

HDX16 gets hot way too quick with minimal tasks.

Have you cleaned out the fan intake and exhaust from all the likely accumulated dust?

Need to replace the charger for my HDX16t...anyone got any good ones via Amazon or elsewhere (without paying $50+ to buy it from HP). Also, may need to replace the 6 cell battery...without going OEM, what are a couple of decent choices? Thanks

Order the battery from amazon. My son just ordered a 12 cell for 32 and some change. They also sell the power adapter for 9 and up.

My mom's HDX16's screen is blank except when she almost closes the lid then it comes on. It's like the sleep mode is reversed (open the lid screen goes off, close the lid and it comes on). Any ideas?

So, my old but still strong HDX16 1370US has an msata slot, not used. I believe that this is where the optional TV tuner card would have gone. My question is, can I install an msata SSD card here and have it be recognized/used? My Intel Rapid Response drivers are all up to date.

    Thanks!

No, the slot in question is not an mSATA slot. It's actually a USB slot in mPCIe form factor.

Hello. I have some minor damage to the right side of my case. I'm thinking of using super glue to put it back but I'm not sure if I should. Any suggestions?

    Hey everyone.

I was wondering if anyone made a clean install of Windows 8 on an HDX16. I'm interested to know if there are any major compatibility and drivers issues.

I'm about to reformat my laptop, and was wondering if I should wait for Windows 8. Obviously the Metro UI won't be fully exploited due to lack of a touchscreen, but I was wondering if overall performance was any better and worth the upgrade.

Any comment would be welcome :)

This was once a great resource for owners of this computer. I haven't been by in a long time and I'm afraid there aren't enough people left to help me.

Has anyone successfully done an in-place upgrade to Windows 7? I'm trying to do it and having a hell of a time. After a number of pitfalls I've gotten close a few times but on the very last stage I get an error that says "Windows Setup could not configure Windows to run on this computer's hardware." However, the upgrade advisor and everything else I can find to check my system tell me that I'm good to go for Windows 7.

When people experience this error they are usually advised to change the BIOS hard disk drive setting to AHCI or IDE. But of course the HP BIOS does not have any of these options (or many options at all for that matter). So if I can't change the BIOS setting how have you guys gotten Windows 7 to install?

In case it matters I'm installing Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit over Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

    TIA
