I can answer the keyboard question: you turn it off an on with [fn + spacebar]. I find the backlit keyboard essential because in certain lighting conditions there is not enough contrast between the color of the characters and the color of the keys. Of course, if you're in a dark environment, it's really nice. Others have found that the light from the screen illuminates the keyboard enough without the backlight, but that doesn't work for me.

It seems to be a consensus here that there are better graphics cards and laptops for hard core gaming. I find it adequate for Solitaire :)

For an all around entertainment/work machine, I love my HDX18.

Thanks Pipper! Yeah, the M130 seems like a decent card, but not suited for graphic-instense games like Crysis. I'm hoping it will be fine for my needs, though.

And btw, why isn't HP offering the T9600 right now for the HDX18? If they were, there would be no doubt which processor I'd go for.

powerdvd has yet to let me down, in xp or vista. as a rule, it's not the best thing to get your mechanic to put in your flower garden. similarly, i assume any software attached or endorsed with HP is not necessarily the way to go, and avoid just out of G. P.

And has anyone found the damn backlit keyboard part number yet? (salivating)

I was just thinking the same thing after hitting page 524 and still not finding whether or not my Swiss Gear Ibex bag is going to house this bad mamma jamma. ;)

I am looking for precise width, as my DV9700 17" doesn't have much room to spare in that pack. ;)

...back to using search and reading a few more pages in this monster.

HP MediaSmart DVD and Power DVD are made by the same company Cyberlink. I e-mailed tech support about this. They say it's an anti-piracy issue. The movie companies can change the encryption any time they like. We have to wait for updates to watch them. HD DVD was much better.

I'm using the Targus CPT401, and it holds the HDX18 nicely. I put the power brick in the front pocket under the flap.

The HDX18 that I'm using is 17 3/16 " Wide by 11 3/16" Deep. Height when closed is 1 7/16" in the front and 1 13/16" in the rear.

Power brick is a monster too at 6.5" x 2.5" x 1.5" not including the attached cord!

So, I pulled the trigger on an HDX18T this evening. Lets hope it all works out!!

I'm slowly working my way through the forum. It's quite a lot to read.

I opted for the 2x250gb drives over the single 320gb model (both were "included") option and I wonder if my reasons were valid. I read that if you only purchase one drive that you would have to buy additional parts to install another one. Is that true? Anyway, like most here I am just waiting for a decent sized SSD that costs less than my car, so either way the drives will land up being external backups.

My last laptop was a screaming Pentium 133 Winbook with 8mb ram and a 2gb HDD. It had one slot for either a CD or Floppy drive so you had to shut off the computer to switch between them. Good thing I only paid $3200 for it  . It was worth it though.

Ok ty for your help :) Everything works perfect now I'm only missing the black rounded-rectangle when you change volume/bass/treble etc. I had it on default OS but I don't have it anymore on 7 even when I installed Quick Launch buttons. Is it perhaps a feature of the Mediasmart software?

I contacted HP support about MediaSmart DVD not playing those movies. Here's their response.

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

I understand that this is very frustrating. The reason that you are having problems viewing the Blu-Ray is the security encryption that the distributors of the movies have used to prevent piracy.

The updates that the system is looking for are actually run through the Media Smart designers, not Hewlett-Packard. If you are running a firewall please turn it off before running the updater.

    Update from MediaSmart
The MediaSmart updates and enhancements console provides an area where you can easily review and download the latest product upgrades and enhancements. To open MediaSmart updates and enhancements mode:

    1. Click the Settings control in the DVD control panel, and then click the Update tab.

    2. Click the listed update.

    3. Click Download and follow the on-screen instructions.

If you are still not able to view the new Blu-Ray disks, the run the updater periodically over the next several days, as Media Smart will release the update as soon as they get it.
This should resolve the issue. If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further.
For information on keeping your HP and Compaq products up and running, please visit our Web site
    at:
    http://www.hp.com/go/totalcare
    Sincerely,
    Norma
    HP Total Care

Media Smart will release the update as soon as they get it.

Well Cyberlink isn't releasing the updates as soon as they get them. The movie companies release the new encryptions to software vendors well in advance of the movie being released. Check out the forums at Cyberlink. There are many posts there with people complaining of movies not playing. Corel and Arc Soft make movie viewing programs also, I'll be checking those out next. HD DVD why did you surrender. WHY WHY WHY. :(

    Well crud.

my week old X18 has experienced a main board malfunction. A box is on it's way.
My previous X18 failed and overheated causing burns to my hand, I had it 3 weeks and HP had it + build time for this new one of approx a month, now the new one goes back for repair.

I just cant catch a break with this model laptop can I? I still love it, and will recommend this model to anyone, but man...cut me a break.

    Hey Guys

Been a while since I posted here....anyway, I've had my HDX18 for almost 3 months and ZERO issues so far after 24/7 operation with some minor gaming.

I also have a dedicated PC hooked up via HDMI to my Pio receiver to a 720p projector.

I'm thinking of selling my HTPC and then using the HDX for HTPC functions as well.

Is any one using this model for full HTPC usage? E.g. to play 1080p MKV's, BR movies, standard movies, OTA HDTV, etc?

Most importantly, can u pass full 5.1 uncompressed PCM audio from HDMI out from the HDX to a receiver?

    Thanks
    SS

5.1 uncompressed PCM audio over hdmi - YES ( If your receiver supports if. My denon 889 does )

HDX 18 as a HPTC replacement. Seems like an expensive solution and the damn hdmi cable always falls out when you move the laptop. The retards who sold us on HDMI need to be lined up against a wall. Short cable runs, massive cable, limited bandwidth, no forward compatibility, terrible connector. I'm not convinced there could be a worse interface design.

The first one I had that overheated was a
    P8400
    4GB DDR2
    Nviddia
    2 320GB HD's
    Blu-ray

The new one that is going back tomorrow is
    P8700
    4GB DDR2
    Nviddia
    2 7200 rpm 320GB HD's
    TV Tuner
    Blu-ray super Multi write
    Back lit keys

There is a long list of issues that the new one had right out of the box, I spent about 2 hours on the phone with Tech Support giving the problems, doing some tests, trouble shooting before he told me it needed a new board.

I understand that from time to time a computer, or any manufactured item for that matter will come from the factory "broken" or defective, but twice for me? come on, I barely got the chance to break either one in.

Just download Slysoft AnyDVD HD which will remove AACS encryption. HP MediaSmart then will be able to play any BD without updating.

Sort of. It can pass uncompressed 5.1 LPCM if it is not DTS HD MA, Dolby TrueHD, or LPCM from a BD or HD DVD. All computers cannot losslessly do LCPM passthrough for these formats. It will always be down sampled to lower quality LPCM so it will not the be the same quality as what is on the disc.

The only way to get lossless audio is the desktop soundcard Asus Xonar HDAV 1.3.

Hi all. First time poster. Just received my new HDX18 this am. Pretty sweet. Got the Q9100 a few other upgrades.

One question - anyone have direct experience with a keyboard cover?

I could not find a specific make searching this forum, Google, or the main vendors I know of. Only found a kind of sketchy looking chinese e-bay offering.

    Any recommendations?

    TIA

    Robert

Would you be able to tell the difference between a Q9000 and a Q9100?

Also, how easy is it to swap out CPU's? I am thinking of going with the default CPU and just buying a QX9300 off of ebay. This would work right?

I am assuming I'd have to keep the stock CPU for warranty purposes?

TIA guys, your help is really appreciated.

No & 2 hours according to someone who just put in a 9300 off ebay. The majority is taking the thing apart to access it. Also he listed the pdf for all repair / replacement. I can't find his post, but here is the manual you will need. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...62-001&usg=AFQjCNFOv7DA3lEa2HlDPft4XoeVJPZJ_Q

It's admittedly more complicated and risky, but Microsoft is offering a 25% cashback at the moment that stacks with the $200 discount that HP is offering. If you wait to use the HP 30% discount, you'll likely see that the $200 discount vanishes.

To get started with cashback, you have to create an account and jump through a few hoops. You then use Live Search to find the link with the special cashback icon. You then proceed to buy the laptop through the HP website without closing your browser window and without clicking away from the HP website. You'll get an email confirming your discount in a day or two. You then wait two months so that the cashback program can verifiy that you did not return the laptop. After two months, you request your cashback. You can get up to $2500 per year.

The 30% discount from HP is immediate and much less worrisome, but if you follow the cashback guidelines carefully, and don't mind waiting for your money from a third party, you can save a few pesos.

Attached are screenshots of the 25% cashback that is available now.

Check every day: they usually limit the number of coupons, and they can go fast.

I saved just over $1000 with the 30% coupon.

So I've just spent an hour skimming through all of this stuff and quite honestly none of it makes sense to me
I've never understood much about computers but I know I need a good one. I've spent a couple of months now researching and have decided on this HP HDX18t. I went to the HP website and "built" it but even after reading the info on all of the options I still feel like a freakin alien to all that stuff.
Here's what I came up with:

Operating system-Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)

    Processor-Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor T9550 (2.66 GHz)

    Memory-4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm) - For 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M

Hard drive-640GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (320GB x 2) with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

Graphics card-1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 130M - For DDR3 Memory

Display-18.4" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display (1920x1080p)

Primary optical drive-Lightscribe Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer

Personalization-Webcam + Fingerprint Reader with HP Imprint Finish (Fluid)

    Networking-Intel NextGen Wireless-N Mini-card

TV & entertainment experience-HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner

    Keyboard-Full Size Backlit Keyboard

Primary battery-8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

OS and recovery media-System Recovery DVD with Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)

So basically some standard and some upgraded. I don't care about a bigger battery, most of my work is done at home.
I'm not a big gamer but I want something with space/memory and the option to play some games if I choose. Basically I'm a student, I work my butt off and about the only thing I have time for is to enjoy some quality movies. I wanted something nice and I am confident this is it but before I push the checkout button I needed someone to look over what I've done because none of it makes sense.

I really appreciate any feedback! :D
(Oh and sorry I wasn't sure if I should post my question in this thread or not)

    Jennifer

The processor upgrade is questionable if you are looking for value. Have a look at this thread

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=370730

Also, consider the Bluetooth network mini-card. It allows you to pull in photos from your phone, use wireless stereo headphones, and use a wireless mouse without jamming a USB bluetooth dongle into the side of your laptop. HP sells a bluetooth mouse that's $10 cheaper this week and matches the HDX computers:

    http://www.shopping.hp.com/store/product/product_detail/FR165AA%2523ABA

For me, the HP mouse has to be switched to 800 dpi to slow it down and allow the touchpad to still be usable. I understand that Logitech has a better solution and divorces their mouse from the common Windows Control Panel sensitivity wherein the touchpad and the mouse sensitivities are married to the same control!

i just got my new hdx18t from ebay yesterday. It a factory refurbished unit so it has a few problems. the top right usb port does nothing and im all but sure the right speakers dont work. When i change the balance of music one side is fine but the other just sounds like the bass speaker. another disappointment is that the chassis seems to resonate and ruin the sound even when the balance is set to the good side. i think the 3 month warranty is only for the US and i'm in australia so just trying to weigh up my options. I assume that the speak is not getting power but is the rattling noise from the chassis normal? i read that there are a lot of issues with the sound driver and win7 so just making sure its not software related before having to send it off. the headphone jacks both work so heres to hoping
    hope someone has some advice
    Cheers

Thanks...was hoping to find another backpack, but if I go the bag route, this looks good, thanks!

I am still mocking up a cutout to stuff it in my Swiss Gear IBEX, but I think I need to keep looking. ;)

Still getting to grips with my HPX 1200... On my previous HP Compaq I had a Cyberlink program for capturing videos using the built in Webcam... I'd expect the HPX to have something similar but can't seem to find anything! Is there something I'm missing?

Even worse, I can't even get the camera recognised at all. I take it that the drivers should be installed from the start? Looks like another email to HP...

I am looking for a backpack that would be able to fit the HDX nicely and carry a few books, is this possible and if so....which one would you recommend?

Hey Mike, I really appreciate that link for the processor upgrade. That's going to save me some serious money. I didn't know it wasn't necessary.
Also I'm still deciding on the bluetooth, I will probably get it but honestly I didn't even know what it was! Even if I don't use it now, who knows I may learn to use it later.
Really appreciate you getting back to me! :D

Re-furbished refers to a device that was brought back to original working order, although not new. Malfunctions as you describe don't sound like a legit "refurb" and I would raise hell with this seller. The things you are describing - speakers not working, uncorrectable distortions, single usb ports not working - those all sound like hardware issues to me. (in other words, gotta send back or send to get fixed, or take to opening the case and fixing yourself. Not software.

Camera should come up right away. XP - Win 7. Are we talking about the HPX or HDX. Not being "technical" just making sure.
