I couldn't agree with you more. There is nothing out there in the market place I would rather have.

Hi folks, have a quick question about the hdx18. Has anyone found a way of increasing the cursor scroll speed - I've set it to the maximum in the touchpad properties but I'm still having to do two scrolls to cover the large screen.

Is there a 3rd party app that can help or does updating the synaptics touchpad driver work (i'm on v11.2.0, 17thJul08).

    Thanks.

Can anyone help me with this:

    I have a HP HDX18 1299 and I can't play any gameso n it.

I tried Counterstrike Source and Runes of Magic.

I get a BSOD at 70°C so I guess overheating.

Could this be a Windows 7 problem or is it the notebook?

After all the bad luck I had on my new HDX 18 I just wanted to update. I returned my new laptop back to HP on the 9th. They sent me out a new computer (received in under 10 days!!) I am EXTREMELY happy with the new one. It has NONE of the issues I was having with the old one. It's running smooth and I haven't seen the "blue screen" once!!
I am very impressed with their speedy customer service and although there were a few bumps concerning getting the original price, I am more than satisfied now.
    Such an amazing machine!! :)

    70? cpu or videocard?
Its a high temp for the cpu, not for the videocard.

Download Furmark run it in stability mode [extreme heating mode if necessary], and check the video card temp.

Anyway its not normal. Do you get the bsod even with the preinstalled OS?

Really? 18 inches is portable? Wow. I'm very much afraid about venturing to the 16"-18" realm before for my next laptop purchase. ;)

I never used the preinstalled OS and cleared the recovery partition. 70° is from the GPU but because ventilation is poor all other hardware's temperature go up aswell. I'll try your program :)

Yeah, for me it's great. I don't take it to class everyday or anything, but do often take it to college for something to do between classes. For taking notes, I'd recommend a Netbook or 14".

I can feel ya a little on the big adjustment, a little. My last laptop was just a 16", but my uncle had the same laptop as me except in the 17" model, and when I saw it I thought, "Man, that thing is too big!"

Compare the HDX16 and HDX18 for example. HDX16 @ 1080p or the HDX18 @1080p? I'd take that extra 2 inches of screen real estate any day. Not to mention, the HDX18 is CHEAPER!!

Anyway, there are SO MANY pros to having the 18" model for me that I wouldn't even consider the other. My HDX18 doesn't weigh more than 1 or 2 pounds more (total 9lbs) than my last one (DV Series).

The biggest difference in size that I noticed was in LENGTH!! This 16:9, 1080p is a new format to me, and I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

    Has anyone bought this

    1) HP Enviro Battery for HDX18 and dv7 Series (GA04)

    http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/...otebook_batteries/1/accessories/NH494AA%23ABA

I really want to get a battery with a significant battery life. Right now I get about 1 hr and 45 mins which is okay but it does sorta get annoying having to recharge it every so often. I love the notebook a lot and use it constantly so if there's one thing that is its weak spot I would definitely say it's the battery life.

link didn't work, but that enviro battery is the same size, physics and math are going to prohibit them from being able to-

    1. improve in any way the battery we have already &
    2. fit it in the same size &
    3. in some way call it environmentally friendly. (performance and the environment rarely go hand in hand)

I don't care what it looks like or that it may have to come with it's own feet, they need to release a larger battery for the 18!

This may have already been taken care of, but is there a fan controller application available for the hdx 18 yet? I play video games frequently and would really appreciate some extra cooling power.... if there isnt a solution, could anyone think of something that would aid me besides lowering my video settings. Thanks in advance!ps- i love the thread!its soooooo helpful!

Here's some info about this line of batteries:

    http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-10118985-54.html

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4928&review=hp+enviro+battery

According to the notebook review article, the standard battery lost 29% of its charge capacity in 7 months of use. If the Enviro battery does what it claims then you will save a significant amount of money on replacement batteries.

Do a search on Amazon for this product: NZXT ACC-NT-CRYO-LX 120MM Aluminum Notebook Cooler Adjustable Fans (Silver). It's a cooling pad that I've been using for about a month now and it works very well. Hope this helps.

Well I read the notebookreview.com review/preview and it seemed to indicate that the enviro one gave the laptop an extra hour or so in battery life which to me is significant.

But yeah I'd love a larger battery option as well. But I don't want something hideously ugly and bulky.

Anyways I appreciate the links but does anyone ACTUALLY OWN the enviro battery and if so what can you report on its performance with the HDX 18t.

    Help needed.

I have had my HDX-18 since December and I just noticed that I have started having a problem that maybe some of you have experienced or possibly have a solution for. When I am using the HDX-18 with a lot of mouse movement, the mouse freezes for about 1 to 2 seconds and then resumes. This happens about once every 60 seconds. Now I thought this might be the CPU hitting a 100% utilization but I monitored the situation and it did not. I believe I have the latest HP drivers installed. I thought it could be related to the video driver as a few times I received a message that it had an error exceptioon and then stopped and restarted itself. To test this I played a DVD to see if that would freeze and it did not, so I believe that this is just related to the mouse. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be or where I should focus my attention on to try to resolve this.

    thanks

It can be caused by a lot of stuff.
Running programs usually, or faulty ram, sometimes it can even happen when using p2p with too many connections opened.
Do you have a SSD? Can you format? Does it happen doing something in particular?.
Also check the System log in the control panel, there is an Event ID 10 going around atm, causing some problems (SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99 error messsage).

    .Breath,

I do not have an SSD. I notice it the most when playing card games that came with Vista or sometimes when I surf the web. I will check the System log.

    Thanks.

I thought I had everything working perfectly under Windows 7 then I just found out my mini remote's scrollwheel isn't working on my Windows 7 side. Any clues on how to get this last little thing working? The other buttons on the remote work I just love to spin the wheel.

Even though some have had success installing the drivers and/or disabling certain services that seem to break stuff - I stay away from the IDT drivers.

the ones from the microsoft update catalog, they were automatically pushed to the DV4t so I manually tried them for the HDX18, they work fine other than the mute LED and not being able to fully adjust bass and treble

Well I am pleased to stand corrected here.

If the battery can cost only 30 dollars more and provide 30 minutes of additional charge, and provide more recharge cycles...

That's a no brainer. I'm suprised that I'm not seeing this in their commercials, as a key selling point, as HP is currently the only ones with this particular advantage.

Those drivers wont make the mute button turn into the correct colour, you need the IDT audio codec drivers (watch out: there is no version of these drivers for win7 atm and they give a lot of troubles with it).

I hope that I've fit within the thread rules and forgive me if I haven't.

I have an HP HDX 18 running OSX 10.5.7 and I'm headed for the hiway. My previous laptop was an HP dv1000 so this is quite an upgrade. With the dv1000 I had a Duracell power inverter in the car so I could work while someone else was driving.

I understand that the HDX 18 uses a lot more power. If I understand correctly, it's about 70w which means no power inverter would work unless it was directly wired to the car battery.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to "go mobile" with such a large laptop? We're headed up through Utah near St. George and I'm also trying to decide if it's worth getting a Sprint PCS card or using my at&t edge which does not show coverage in that area.

    tia

I could not agree more. I carry this around with me and use it on my lap frequently. My work issued laptop is 14", and it's disappointing to use such a small screen. I really wouldn't want anything smaller now that I have the HDX18.

The HDX is completely portable in the car for around 40 dollars. 40 dollars will get you a little 75-150 watt inverter, and you are good to go.

Remember, if the adapter mentioned uses 70 watts, Watts = Volts X Amps.

14 volts( the battery is 12 at rest, but the alternator whilst the car is running will be around 14) in the car and 120 volts in the house/office.

So thats 70 divided by 14 = less than 5 amps needed in the car(your cigarette lighter will be fused at around 15 amps, so it's got plenty of juice to power a 150 watt inverter, which will cost you around 40 dollars. Buy a car charger for 40 dollars? not a chance.

It just is silly to me when I think about it. Convert 14 volts DC to 120 volts AC with the inverter, and then use the laptop power adapter to convert 120 volts AC back down to 18 volts DC. Oh well.

No they are IDT compatible drivers, something like a generic driver, there are no win7 IDT driver atm, there are Vista drivers compatible with win7 (bad compatibility i should add).

Simple try to install IDT Codec Drivers taken from softpedia.com (or the one coming from hp.com site ,but these arent updated) and you will see the led working correctly.

Wow! I had NO idea how many glitches were actually in Vista 64. I've got quite a few popping up. If anyone is having problems with the sound distortion that is connected to various "windows sounds" (Mine was really bad using the fingerprint reader) I found a fix from the Vista64.com forums:

Control Panel -----> Hardware and Sound -----> Sound -----> Manage Audio Devices -----> Highlight Speakers and Dual Headphones -----> Properties -----> Advanced tab -----> Change the "sample rate and bit depth" to 24 bit, 44100 Hz (Studio Quality).

It might be useful for another newbie like me that had to google everywhere for a solution! :)

Is that ship date or purchase date?

I purchased effectively yesterday. I read that they will back the date of acceptance up to July 25. I may lose by 1 day.

One thing I never got resolved is if the HDX t18 has bluetooth technology? I know it has a WiFi mini card w/ bluetooth. But, I have never heard of a WiFi card also supplying the power for bluetooth? Futhermore, what does a WiFi card do with bluetooth?

I've had this with my wireless mouse and in my case it has turned out to be a wireless signal issue, either related to battery charge-level or the position of the little wireless dongle.

I plug the wirelesss receiver (smaller than a USB key in the case of Logitech) into a USB hub, and sometimes it gets twisted around into some position where the signal is blocked. Moving it a little closer or to a different angle will do it.

My HDX came with the recovery partition E: installed. However, I also bought the recovery disk.

Is there any scenario where this recovery partition would be useful?

    I don't see any.

If my system partition (C) or the disk it is on goes bad, I have Shadowprotect images which do bare-metal restore from their own provided boot disk.

The HP E: partition recovery process is going to reset everything to as-shipped. I would only do that prior to selling or transferring the computer. If I am going to do that, I can use the disk.

One word--Kensington. There was extensive talk in this and other forums about these beauties. 120W, AC and DC (Car) compatible. Charge multiple items by using different tips. I've been using them for years, and rarely do I even use the manufacturer charger because they are so big and bulky.

Get the refurbs. Dirt chip, and have the same 1 year warranty. Never had a problem with them, but be sure to test yours before your trip.

You will need a N30 tip for the HP, which of course, it doesn't come with, so you can buy a tip from Kensington, or get one on ebay or I have lots of extra N30's, I could send you one.

Kensington 120W AC/DC universal adapter for cheap!

These chargers are $140 retail, so $30 is a steal. Ultra thin, and very light, you'll wonder why the manufacturers don't sell these!

They also make a DC (Car) only 120W version, it's about the size of a business card! Incredible!
