The recovery partition and the recovery disk do the exact same thing.
Actually you dont need to buy the disk, you can make it through the hp software installed in your pc.
If you have the disk you dont need the partition, but if you lose the disk you are screwed (gona have to order another one), the partition takes just 7-8 gb so its not really a lot of space.
Btw even having the partition wont be the safest option, if your hd brake you will be in trouble anyway.
I personally keep a Recovery DVD in my carry bag, and i leave the partition too, cause i have 2 HDx250GB so i can waste 7-8GB.

A few impressions after having my HDX18 for a week now - seems a pretty sweet system on the whole. Was unsure whether to go for an 18 over a 17 but its mainly going to stay at my desk anyway, so its a desktop replacement that can also be portable. Also have an old vaio 15" for taking out & about.

    +ives
-64bit vista is running pretty smooth. was going to dual booth win7 but not much point at the moment. The thing runs cool too (dual core).
    - display, sound & keyboard impressive

-ives/not yet checked out or sorted:
    - on boot/restart/coming out of hibernation I seem to be able to need to do a cntl-alt-del after to activate the boot for some reason, not sure what this is. havent found a dedicated sleep button as yet either.
    - the volume/bass/treble thing - seen some posts here - assume its the same problem with it randomly going off if i go anywhere near the smart buttons..guess the updates i saw suggested need to be done.
-thought there was integrated bluetooth, havent sussed it out yet
-havent tried the tv tuner as yet
-touchpad - the maximum scrolling speed is way too low.

Not too fussed on the last one as bough a Logitech VX Nano wireless laser mouse. Would really recommend it - smaller than typical mouse but bigger than a usual notebook one and has a *tiny*, almost non-existent usb dongle that will never need removing. Very accurate & good battery life too. The scrollwheel I wasn't sure about to start with - has 2 optional actions, 1 with incremental scrolling and one free motion which enables moving real quick through long pages. Really liking the latter.

Now waiting for a backpack and esata cable for my external HDD to come through.

So a few niggles to sort out but would definitely recommend to others.

They come and go on ebay. Simply contact Kensington (via their email/support link) and ask them for a N30 tip. 9 times out of 10, they'll offer to send you one free.

Their support is great (India based, but via email, who cares!). If/when your adapter ever breaks within warranty, they'll send you out a brand new, retail packaged unit with tips and bag!! Very nice people.

Anyways, I believe N24 also works. Now, with new units the N30 is included, and I don't see where they sell individual tips anymore. :(

The default settings for a quick press of the power button in Vista is to sleep. Pressing FN+F5 also enables sleep mode.

If I remember right, mine wouldn't play under Windows Media Center, but they would play under HP Media Smart (it could be vice versa). Try the opposite application of the one that you're using.

HP MediaSmart is supposed to play Blu-Ray discs and has for me up until I tried to play Planet Earth. I have not been able to play any of the 4 discs. I ripped to the hard drive with AnyDVD HD and tried that too, but again no luck. If anyone has played any one of the 4 discs successfully on the HDX18, I would like to hear about it.

Alrite, I followed valen741's guide for using RivaTuner to over clock the GPU. I have no problems with the OC; the settings stick with no problem. However, I noticed that when I switch over to battery power, the GPU does not downclock itself. Of course, I know that by using rivatuner to force the OC, it will not downclock. However, I wanted to know if there is a setting somewhere in Rivatuner that will allow for the GPU to downclock itself (therefore saving battery power) when running on battery. Any ideas?

Take a look at this guide.

Speaking of MediaSmart, has anyone had minor issues with setting proper black levels on their films?

So far I've only tried Dark City, and YEAH it's meant to be dark as hell. But I get the feeling that the true blacks looks almost slightly gray. I've messed with brightness/contrast/gamma to little avail under Nvidia Control Panel. Any suggestions?

Has anyone tried using Power DVD with the remote control, are they compatible?

Hey guys, considering getting this laptop..I've had HP's dv6500t for two years and it's sadly dying (the beyond-repair kind), so time for a replacement!

My main problem with it was that the laptop gets really, really freaking hot. How's the heat on this thing after some intensive usage? And the trackpad? The dv6500t's broke pretty fast and I didn't even use it that often..Just hoping that the build quality on the HDX18 is better. Thanks guys

The hdx18 seems really nice, it might be my new notebook. Few questions about it:
Is it comfortable to have the hdx18 on your lap? (weight / temperature)
A lot of reviews mention the touchpad as having too much friction. How do you feel about that? Does it just take some getting used to?
And just exactly how glossy is that screen?

Okay so I am officially on my second return of this notebook in the last month :( I managed to actually keep this one for a little over a week. I woke up this morning and it just didn't work anymore, apparent hard drive failure.

I'm beyond frustrated. I would LOVE this notebook if only it worked properly. HP said I have to do a completely new order since this is my second return and they apologized profusely. I will be extremely mad if I have to pay more for it, I haven't checked out the current deals going on.

Please talk me out of giving up and trying something else. I seriously don't know what to do, is there seriously anything out there better? My specs that I had it built to are below. If you can offer any advice or support please do. I'm feeling mighty defeated by this machine.

    Thanks!

Do you have a part #? This is the only link I could find for a TV tuner on the Canada website

but when I search by their part # I come up with nothing.

FYI: The 30% off coupon NB2556 no longer works. Only difference is they now offer a free upgrade from 320GB/7200 to a 500GB/7200 HD. I just ordered mine yesterday when it still was available with the free Windows 7 upgrade, some I'm happy. :)

I was wondering, are any of you HDX18t owners having issues with the infinity display getting dust in between the glass?

I currently have a dv5t and have these problems. I have a few dust bunnies stuck between the infinity glass and screen!

I'm looking to upgrade to an HDX18t, but would like to know if there are these issues present on these systems...

Also, how bright is the screen? Since it's not LED, I'm guessing HP put double-lamps under those...I hear it looks kinda washed out...

Thanks - I found the settings for the power behaviour. What I still can't work out though is how it behaves on powering up - it does part of the boot sequence then the screen goes blank and nothing happens. The only way of breaking out of this and continuing the boot sequence that I've found is to hit CTRL-ALT-DEL, no idea why..has anyone an ideas?

Also had some problems keeping the maximum screen brightness (when plugged in) yesterday - changing the setting for this to max worked for a couple of seconds before it switched to a slightly lower level. Played around with the power settings ("HP Recommended" etc) which didn't help and eventually managed to get it to stick somehow but it seems temperamental.

I don't think the temperature would be too much of a problem - the dual-core at least doesn't seem to run any hotter than an old VAIO I have. Haven't really tried the lap thing as yet - don't think the weight/size would be too much of a problem but if I was going to need something primarily for use on a lap, I'd have gone for something smaller - for me it's primarily a desktop replacement which I can move from room to room when necessary and take out with me once in a while. Will also depend on your size/build to a degree.

Another reason is that I can't seem to get the touchpad to scroll quick enough as even on the highest setting I can't cover the whole screen with one swipe of the touchpad - so I'm using an external mouse which is great but not so condusive to lap use.

The friction on the touchpad is fine IMO - was expecting it may be a problem but its fine. Re the glossyness of the screen - it looks superb in a "normal" environment (indoors, dark or with the lights on). No problem with the glossyness there....I'd guess it wouldn't be great under direct sunlight, but again not something I'm planning to do.

Can't tell you whether to stick or twist with the HDX but if that happened to me I'd be on to HP support asking for some money off or at least they throw in an accessory/upgrade to pay you back for your patience, or the order would be cancelled.

    Hello everyone.

I just got a new HP HDX18t-1200 in the mail yesterday, and I am LOVING it! I do have one problem that gets really annoying though.

Whenever I play full-screen games (this also happens randomly when I'm browsing the web or doing anything really), the touch sensitive volume buttons will pop up on its own and move up and down on the slider, and bring me out the game back to the desktop just to show me the buttons are moving, and it doesn't go away until I swipe my finger across all the buttons (it's a weird fix but it works).

I updated my BIOS since I thought HP maybe had a fix, but it didn't fix it. Is there anyway to fix this? Also, can I just disable them, since I never see myself using them?

Hey guys, I was looking to take advantage of this Windows 7 deal: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Win...tr_2?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1246296967&sr=8-2

But the only thing holding me back is my HDX's compatibility with a new operating system namely the quick buttons, thumb reader and remote.

I'm sure this has already been covered numerous times in this thread so if it has can someone please send me a link to the page?

Thank you for all of your assistance.

I didn't get any replies on this backpack but I've bought one and it's a good pack for the x18. It's advertised for a 17" but I've also seen it listed for 17"-19"s. The size of the laptop sleeve is confusing as its a pouch in the main compartment that comes up 2/3rds of the height of that compartment, so its specs are less than 18". Anyway its a sweet looking pack, has reasonable padding and plenty of space/compartments. I'll need to extend the velcro strap on the laptop sleeve (which keeps it secure) though as it isn't quite long enough - it would fit a 17 but I can mod this easy enough.

All in all a good pack, but I believe its being discontinued (in the uk at least) so stocks of some colours are low/unavailable (they also do a green which isn't listed as one of the options on the page).

RE: I'm using an external mouse which is great but not so condusive to lap use. (Using quote to reply worked, then didn't work for me.)

There is a lot of real estate between the bottom of the laptop and the keyboard. I bought, quite cheaply, black rubberized shelf liner and cut pieces to fit on either side of the touchpad. Works great with my mouse.

I also printed out a picture of one of my mini wire-haired dachshunds, put it on top of one of the pads and covered it with Saran Wrap's new cling film for a mousepad with graphics I like.

As for those who post about the glossiness of the screen, I have an anti-glare film from Photodon which they cut specifically to size for me. Not so much for glare but to protect the screen. I hate to cover it up, it is so beautiful; but I want to keep it safe and clean.

has anyone else had this problem - I've changed all the settings numerous times but i can't get the max brightness level to stick when on mains power. If I put all the settings for the battery and the mains to maximum I get a considerably brighter screen when running from the battery..

Hello once again! This time i feel pretty stupid as i have managed to somehow LOWER my wireless connection speed on my hdx....i have several computers throughout the house as well as laptops and all the ones with wireless usually report somewhere in the vicinity of 120-160mbps where my hdx is getting a pitiful 60mbps....im probably overlooking something incredibly obvious but i would really appreciate some opinions and help...i have connected to other wireless-n networks at other locations and have gotten 130+mbps and its not the router itself as all my other devices are blazing with 120+mbps...if anyone has any suggestions or help i would really like to hear them....thank you in advance!

A couple of issues - hints needed.

My machine is a HDX18 1250, and I absolutely love it. However I have a few issues:

    1) I originally bought an intel x18 ssd that didn't fit in the drive bay (microSATA != SATA, duh). Now I am considering getting an ocz vertex or an x25 to replace the primary drive, however in that case I hear that will probably need a drive caddy - where do I get that from?

    2) One of the first days I had my hdx, it overheated and got a small "bulge" about an inch above the F1-F4 keys. It isn't that noticable, but it sort of spoils the overall design. Question: Would you send the machine for repairs, having no pc for 3-4 weeks and risking that HP won't repair or refund it anyways?

    Thanks in advance :)

You not only need a caddy, but the connecting SATA cable also. Get one here:

Lately my 18t has been acting up and getting severly overheated. To the point where it just randomly shuts down completely. Like I'll be listening to music and surfing the web and downloading 1 thing or the other and it just dies.

Those of you with recent or brand new builds of the 18t do they run cool? Have they fixed the sound issues? At low volume the speakers are fine but when you got the highest the speakers sound horrible and there's a wierd scratching noise in them. Finally the short battery life is starting to annoy me. It started out being around 1 Hr and 45 minutes and now it's 1 HR and 22 minutes. And this is all within 1 year. Not at all what I expected.

I got the extended warranty on it and I'm tempted to send it in and get it repaired/replaced but I don't want to be without a laptop for weeks.

I try to always use my Zalman Ultra-Quiet Notebook Cooler when on my hdx. I have overheated a few times without it.

I also use Everest to sort of monitor my temperatures because every blue moon I forget to use my notebook cooler and it's great to get a reminder before the lappie is at shutdown point.

Laptop batteries make me sick. Mine never last too long before only holding a small charge.

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I recently purchased an HDx18 and I am loving it. However I have one issue that I can't seem to figure out. I am trying to configure the TV tuner to work with my Direct TV (satelitte) service but I keep getting a message that I need an IR receiver with IR cable connectors.

Has anyone had success with connecting their laptop with satellite set top boxes? Thanks.

this is what HP support says to do ,
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...=us&dlc=en&product=3552675&rule=46565&lang=en
, so u can either try to restore the quick launch buttons to orignal and some other related software or drivers , then install the updated software re quick launch and perhaps recover the audio driver
