Speaking of running hot, I have a question about temperatures on the dual core. I have the old PS8400 2.26GHz. When I first got it, it shut down once, temperature caused it I think. I now have RightMark CPU Clock utility running at no management and CoreTemp running to watch my temperatures, which usually run in the 40's but have seen them go into 50's.

WinAmp will really raise the temperature, probably, hopefully, only due to a plugin I'll get rid of as soon as all my lyrics are saved to tags. I have a free tagger but can't read it easily until I have cataract surgery. When I close WinAmp, the temperatures drops over 20 degrees. With no WinAmp, right now RightMark says 36 degrees, CoreTemp is ranging 39-42 degrees

Those of you with similar dual cores, what are your temperatures? And if any of you run WinAmp, does it raise your temperature the way mine does?

    I had a Dell with a 17" 1920 x 1200 screen on it. I would say the 18.4" is very similar only a bit wider. 1920 x 1080. So if you've seen a 17", think a bit wider!

My HDX18 should be arriving tomorrow. I will be attending UofM in the fall and was just wondering what school bag you use rageman? Do all your books fit in easily as well?

Awesome choice on your school!! :D Go Blue!!

I use the Uphill Destination. It works great for me. I was unsure if the HDX18 would fit at first, but once I got my HDX18, it fit perfect.

    [IMG] [IMG]

Yeah, I can fit 2 books behind the Laptop Sleeve in that section of the bag. I can also fit another book and a 5 subject college rule notepad, and 5 subject foldaway folder for my notes/tests etc.

I can fit the power adapter in the laptop section of the bag as well, although I usually don't bring that w/ me to campus.

I of course can fit in all the other supplies that you need for college in there as well. There is a zipper on the back that opens up 2 straps to turn the bag into a true backpack. I don't use that though. It also has the handle on top (which I use the most) and a handle on one of the sides for carrying it on its side.

Gotta love the wheels on this thing too. You can imagine that w/ a couple big college books and the HDX18 can get heavy while walking all over campus. The wheels are smooth and fast like Rollerblade wheels.

HERE is the full photo gallery of the backpack w/ the HDX18 in it for you to look at.

I got my at my college bookstore before I got my HDX18. I wanted something to hold all my books, had wheels, and also hold a laptop. Bingo-Bango!

Thanks for all the info about the backpack, I will certainly look into that pack from Uphill.

I have a question about what could be the difference with the HDX 16t and the HDX 18t:
Why does the 18 have quad cores available and the 16 doesnt?
Are there any reasons, system wise, that the HDX16t can't have a quad core processor or even the QX9300?

Does anyone here own the QX9300 processor on the HDX18t?

Probably the HDX 16 can't dissipate all the heat a quad core puts out while the HDX 18 can.

Hello everyone. First Post for me.
Over the past few weeks I read many hundreds of posts in this thread to help me decide if the HDX18 was for me and how to configure it. I did order one and it is scheduled for delivery on the 14th.
I believe I saw someone wrote a guide to setting up a new computer including clean install of vista, removing bloatware, etc. I have not been able to find this guide using search. Can someone point me in the right direction. I would also appreciate any tips you might think I should know.

Thanks and i really did learn a lot here. Next time I will jot the post numbers down on ones that are of most interest to me.

You may want to do a clean install of Vista and I'm sure there may be good reasons for doing this but for info, instead (also as suggested in various places)I just spent an hour or two running pcdecrapifier to identify all the bloatware, then Revo uninstaller to delete all the stuff I didn't need. I can't see anything left on there now I don't need and whilst it may not be quite as clean as a fresh install, doing that and running winpatrol to manage the startup entries left me with a fairly clean build with quick startup/shutdown/performance etc.

I purchased an Intel Wifi Link 5300 to upgrade my HDX 18's 5100 wireless mini-pcie card. Just opened it up and saw only 2 antenna wires in my HDX18. Is the 3rd one not present on HDX18s that came with 5100 or is it hidden somewhere? I just upgraded my Thinkpad X301 from 5100 to 5300 and it had the 3rd wire ready to go nearby.

    You can't ask this.
The only legal versions atm are 7000 beta (expired in june 2009) and 7100 rc (expiring march 2010), versions 7264 is a leaked illegal version.

Anyway the source are always the same, russian overall.

I have this same issue. I contacted HP Tech Support about it and they couldn't help me at all. The only "advice" I was given was to re-register my notebook through HP Registration again...

    Anyone have input here?

I'm quite sure the HDX18T only came with 2 antennas. You'll need to put in the third if you want to reap the 450mbps benefit. On a side note, did the laptop recognize the card at all? I'm thinking of doing what you are doing.

VERY Nice picture of your backlit keyboard!!
It looks like the color of your backlit keyboard is black....
Someone I spoke to at HP said the color of the backlit
keyboard that they have seen is silver-gray...
So, what color is your backlit keyboard ?????
    Thanks!!

It's silver, but that doesn't mean it works.
Myself and others have posted here about the backlit function not working, I am in the process of having a new system one built right now. Apparently a run of them did not have the power to the keyboard lighting hooked up properly.

Has anyone else had issues with burning DL DVD's? I couldn't do my system restore until I changed to regular +R DVD's. I went through 6 trying. I've never had a DL drive before, are they that problematic? Is it the drive, the media or the technology? Is it worth sending it back for? Everything else seems to be working fine so far.

    500GB 7200RPM
    1GB Nvidia GT 130M

My question is there a complete laundry list of maintenance I should do before using?
    Changing the audio drivers, ect....
Should I upgrade to MS7 now or just run with Vista Ultimate 64?
What should I look for in the way of build problems, mouse, keyboard......
I plan on adding another HD, where should I buy the caddy and connector?
Who sells the SATA/USB wire for connecting a HD externally?

Is anyone editing video using Adobe CS4? Any issues?

Does anyone have a good recommendation to add an additional 4gb of RAM to my HDX18t? I have 4gb of DDR3 on my QX9300 processor. I'm having a bear of a time finding the correct RAM modules on HPs website.

Good point. How about taking your own advice before putting foot in mouth?

Per the Intel® Core™2 Quad Mobile Processors:

    Features and benefits
With four processing cores, up to 12MB of shares L2 cache² and up to 1066 MHz Front Side Bus for notebooks, the Intel® Core™2 Quad processor delivered amazing performance and power efficiency enabled by the all new hafnium-based circuitry of 45nm Intel® Core™ microarchitecture.

    (footnote 2):
² Up to 6M of Intel® Advanced Smart Cache per core pair.

Sounds to me there are 2 core pairs and 6MB cache per pair for 12MB total. Isn't that what I said? Thanks for your wonderful, detailed explanation of what the QX9300 architecture is, btw...and your rudeness, jeez...I just can't get enough rudeness these days. Thanks!

Looks like two dual core dies on one chip:

    LOL

Obviously you can't stand to be corrected can you? :)

So tell me, if you "think" that the quad core has the 2x duo core chips on it, then surely the Qx9300 and the X9100 should perform the same on single threaded applications? But according to the benchmarks, it DOESN'T? So what does that tell you smarty pants?

    Choice A
    - Faster Processor, Faster HDD, Backlit Keyboard, No Lightscribe.

Choice B - Slower Processor, Slower HDD, No Backlite Keyboard, Has Lightscribe.

Like scarletfever said, Most Defiantly Choice A!

Believe me, you'll be using the Faster HDD, Faster Processor, and Backlite Keyboard A LOT more than you'd ever use the Lightscribe.

    FaNIX,

We all conduct ourselves in a professional manner on this board. I think you will find people much more receptive to reply if you could lighten it up a bit and not be so eager to criticize. We are all here to learn from each other and have fun it at the same time. OK, I'm done with my rant.

That tells me that the QX9300-only feature, called Intel Dynamic Acceleration is working. It bumps up the clock speed +256Mhz over the spec'd speed when needed (kind of like TURBO mode the Core i7?). So, even though the QX9300 and X9100 have the same spec'd speed, when benchmarked and pushed, the QX9300 will be faster. There may be other architectural differences, but I stand behind what I originally stated about the QX9300 and it's cores, unless you can show me otherwise.

Actually, I wasn't even contesting anything about the X9100. The OP didn't mention anything about the X9100, so I'm not sure why you are bringing that into the discussion. My original comment was the fact that (according to how I read the OP's post) he thought the 12MB cache in the QX9300 was new and that there was an older 6MB version. Maybe you took it another way.

Lastly, I don't mind being corrected, but I do mind people taking attitude and telling me I couldn't be farther from the truth, when in fact, the opposite is true. So far, you haven't given any proof otherwise, other than your foundationless statements. There are certainly nicer ways to tell someone you think differently other than being offensive.

Personally, I don't really care whether the QX9300 is faster or not...it wasn't my original point.

Well, I pulled the trigger on a new 5.25" Blu-Ray burner. After reviewing the specs on the one that comes with the laptop, I decided not to return mine but instead ordered up a Pioneer BDR-203BKS and a Vantec DX NST-530S2 enclosure for it. I'll put the drive into it and use the USB port to use it with the new laptop. I figured that next spring when I build my custom i7 desktop, I could always take it apart and put it that. This is a very sweet drive will burn at 8x and do BDR-E as well as all DL media. :D :D

I like both. The SXPS 16 is thinner and ligher, but the HP HDX18 is a really nice system with a bigger screen...(and the '18 doesn't run as HOT as the '16)

Sorry CNC, your rant was good, but I'm going to take it a step further.

    PeNIX - Go hide yourself.

You are talking to a guru, and the most helpful, and knowledgeable HDX18 contributor here. So not only do you not know your facts, and read a benchmark, and think that entitles you to disrespect LC, but just to clue you in, i'm pretty sure the number of benchmarks LC has personally run, is far greater than the number of benchmarks you have read about while reading CPU in the toilet of your mothers basement.

I scold you in this way because LC won't.

Thanks for the cudos, pmw, but the guy is obviously only interested in being a jerk. How he got onto benchmarks and performance between the two CPU's only his tiny mind knows, because he certainly isn't sharing any of this genius with us in any of his posts.

In any case, my only intent, originally, was to let the OP know that the QX9300 has always had 12MB cache, as I had read into his post that he thought there was a 6MB version (when, in fact, in rereading it, one could assume he was comparing the QX9300 to another offered CPU with 6MB cache).

Whatever...I have more important things to do! ;)

Wrong again...HP added the QX9300 back in October 2008.
