Hey guys, I'm new to this forum. However, recently I just bought an awesome HDX 18 with the 30% coupon NB2556. The shipping date is July 7th and hopefully I'll be able to receive it in good condition.
So my question is, what should I look out for on this new laptop? What kind of defects or imperfections should I look for as soon as I get it and open/start it?
Thanks in advance, this forum is awesome.

Just ordered thee HDX18t and can't wait to receive it. I have a question. I would like to replace my WIFI card (Intel 5100), but I read that HP always lock its BIOS. Is that true? The reason I wanted to replace my WIFI card is because my exisiting WIFI router is based on the Atheros chipset. I wanted to continue to take advantage of the SuperG 108mbps feature. I don't have a need or want to upgrade my perfectly usable router to an N router.

    Any info/help is appreciated.

Well, Anchorage AK is the Customs check in Alaska. At least it's in Customs. But, it is a 3 day holiday for FEDEX, so I doubt anything will move again until Monday...who knows...you may luck out!

    hey everyone.

I am having issues connecting my HDX 18 to my samsung flat screen. I am able to get a video connection through the HDMI connection but I am not able to get any audio signal when playing a blue ray movie. If I play a regular standard definition movie, I don't have any issues with either audio or video. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this issue? Thanks.

I got mine FOUR days early. Most people get theirs FOUR days early.

Check your FedEx Tracking b/s every morning. The day it says something like, "On Truck For Delivery," stay home, don't go to work, college, or Grandma's house, because your HDX18 is being delivered!!!!!!!!PARTY!!!!!

It's always, (90%) early. Usually 3 days or more.

    ROCK ON!!!!! ;)

Mine I think will be here tomorrow, but I won't be home. I called FedEx to hold it at the depot, but they said they had to make an initial delivery attemp. I have a signature waiver on my address, will it be sitting on my doorstep when I get home, hopefully, or will they still not deliver it?

When I ordered my HDX18t/QX9300 last Nov, there was no back-lit keyboard option available at that time. Since some of my keyboard keys started losing their paint, I decided to replace the keyboard and opted to see if the back-lit version (part # 496879-001) would work with my older HDX18.

The back-lit keyboard has 2 flat connection cables (one large and one small) unlike the original non-backlit keyboard which has only one (large) flat cable.

The back-lit keyboard attached just fine to the large keyboard connector and I noticed an unused smaller connector on the circuit board just to the left of the large connector. I plugged the smaller keyboard cable into that and reassembled the unit (then crossed my fingers and applied power)

The back-lit keyboard works just fine and is activated/deactivated using FN+SPACE BAR

Well, my first HDX malfunctioned within 2 weeks of ownership, turned on while in my bag and proceeded to burn my hand when I took it out. After a fight HP agreed to replace it.
The replacement came fresh from the factory custom built with some upgrades thanks to HP. Though it came to me with a faulty main board, Blu-ray Burner did not work I sent it back. Repair wiped the drive and replaced the keyboard (why?) and failed to properly re-assemble the case, lid would not close properly, screws were missing from the case. Sent that back with a nasty note included in the box. When it came back the second time (keep in mind this replacement was used for 3 total days) the lid was still jacked up, case was still not screwed in properly HP decided to replace it again. The 3rd laptop since April 13th has been in my possession for 2 weeks and I have had no problems with it at all.

Needless to say as this was my first "non mac" computer in almost 5 years, I am very disappointed in HP in a big way. Even though I like the TouchSmart computers, I don't think I will buy another HP.

HP did take care of me and in the long run I did get more than what I paid for in the beginning, however at what cost? Since April 13th I have had at most 3 weeks of actual use and I am still holding back from installing all of my pictures, music, and personal files as I am wondering what will happen next, transferring takes to long.

So either stick in there and hold out for them to get it right, or forget about it and buy something other than a Dell.

Anyone out there have any info regarding the comparison between the Blu-Ray writer VS the ROM only? I have the ROM but am considering a return and upgrade to the writer so I was looking for some thoughts on it. Thanks.

I have the Blu-ray burner, and until the other day I have not been able to use it as Encore CS4 and Windows 7 does not get together very well. I did find a work around that enables Encore to work in Win7, I cant find the link right now, but Encore does work, I just have not had the chance to create a BD yet.

I do not have other software to create data BD's, I have several external hard drives for storage so I dont need BD backups.

Wow I feel like such a right now with 3 posts in a row...

Bad luck maybe, I would not say bad service, the only a-hole I had to deal with at HP was the guy in Houston who dealt with me at first on the burn issue, once the first computer was replaced, I dealt with other people at corporate and to be honest, they were very nice. One lady did give me crap because I was running Win 7, everyone else did not care. My frustration came from the hardware, not from the people.

I will never buy Dell, their products feel like garbage. I dont know who I would buy a PC from if I went with a pre-man, building a tower is feasible, but if the wife wants a new laptop, well I will need to make a choice.

You buy garbage, you get garbage. There are plenty of HP/Compaq notebooks and computers that were/are sold at Walmart and Frys and Best Buy that are complete plasticy garbage. Does that make HP, as a whole, bad, or could it be just the lower end models are poorly made?

To say, universally, that Dell products are garbage makes you seem either highly biased because you were unlucky in the past, or misinformed and just repeating what you've heard. Neither lends much credance to your statement. I, personally, have owned dozens of Dell products, and sell multi-hundreds of them per year to my clients. Why Dell? Good quality, good construction, and decent service (better than HP, as a matter of fact).

Given you have an HDX18, which is HP's top-of-the-line notebook, one would conclude it is better built and more reliable than their other models. Same goes for Dell. I would never buy the bottom of the line...anything!

    Quick question-
I received mine today, and do not have the backlit keyboard I ordered.
Is the backlit keyboard always black? Mine is silver.
Also, the volume seems quite low considering the higher quality speakers, anyone else find the volume a bit disappointing?

I just noticed this today. Slight yellow tint on the bottom edge of the screen, right hand side but not reaching the corner.

I've looked up words with yellow tint on laptop screens and either found answers on "loose hardware connection" to magnets to overheating issues. My money's on overheating (as per my other post regarding it: www.hdx18.com/Forum/tabid/55/forumid/4/threadid/496/scope/posts/Default.aspx).

Has anyone had problems with this, and is this irreversible to the point of going through warranty? I've only had this machine for 2 weeks and I'm surprised to see this sort of "damage"(?) so soon...

It's slightly annoying and disheartening to see this; I'm not sure how to prevent this other than perhaps a laptop cooler. That also seems somewhat of a misnomer because my (poor) assumption is that this thing shouldn't 'require' one, yet obviously needs one...

Somewhat discouraged at the moment with this product...

    HP sometimes.
It is irreversible. You just got a defective notebook, because this is not supposed to happen. The HDX 18 also does not need a cooling pad as long as it is on a hard flat surface. Mine is on 24/7 and it's never had a heat problem.

I saw that HP is now selling the QX9300 Quad with a 12MB level 2 cache. Would this make a significant performance increase over the 6MB level 2 cache?

@peter0328: Thanks for confirmation. Starting warranty now.

I'll be posting updates on the following post regarding this process.

Update: Check out the link, looks like H.P. is quick to say it's my fault. *sigh* And the retail store I bought it from only has a 7 day window to refund or exchange... blah.

I have also requested a replacement for my non functioning backlit keyboard issue, HP has confirmed it's a hardware issue and is defective. I had them bill me for a new one, it is being expedited to me at which point I will return this one. I must say they made a generous offer to refund me if I accepted the one I have with this keyboard, but it just rubs me wrong to not get what I had ordered.

They also have upgraded my hard drive on the replacement to the 500 GB at no charge as they are honoring my previous invoice total. I can not argue with that, just hoping the new one is a winner...will post results.

I ordered mine on June 27 and it was delivered here in New York on July 6.
The online "shipping date" was July 9.

I see one can buy the HDX18t from HP with the QX9300 CPU. The only reason why someone would really buy this, is to overclock it. Intel even demostrated on the overcloking capabilities of this chip, thats why it COSTS SO MUCH MORE... Now I dont really see the use to spend that much money on a CPU without having the capabilities to overclock it. HP doesn't have any options in the bios to set the FSB, so the only way to do this, is VIA software. But we need to know the PLL chip model, mostly a ICS chip found on the motherboard. I dont want to go through the trouble of taking the laptop apart to view the ICS chip model. So i'll rather ask if anyone has done this and might know that PLL chip the HDX18t has?

    Thanks

I don't think anything has changed with the cache, it's always been that. In effect, 4 cores, 12MB total equals 3MB per core. I think the QX9300 is 2 dual core chips on a die, therefore, each dual core had 6MB each (12MB total, or 3MB per core).

I had an HDX18t with the QX9300 (gotten when they were first offered at the giveaway price of $225 which was a price mistake by HP and a whole nuther story!), and although it was quick, it was also HOT. I wound up selling that notebook at a GOOD profit and bought another with the C2D 2.8Ghz for less money and better performance for what I do.

I currently have an HDX18t with the QX9300, and my system information shows that I only have 6MB of level 2 cache. I would imagine that the performance difference probably wouldn't be noticeable, but I was curious.

That was quite a steal at $225! :)

Thanks, I'm thinking of buying a Blu Burner and replacing my current on. Disappointed to find out the Blu burner from HP does not burn BR rewriteables.

Hey everyone, those of you that have dual HD's...does the palm rests run pretty warm? I hate typing on laptops with the palm rest area getting all hot.

Also, does the HDx18t have issues with dust getting stuck between the panels and infinity display? I asked earlier but no one answered. Hard to flip through 605 pages of forum. Thanks.

Your question is highly subjective. What kind of answer are you really expecting? After all, this is the HDX18 forum, so people here (for the most part) obviously like the 18" screen size.

If anything is too big, it's your post! Whats the point of pasting over 100 lines of specs of the HDX18?
