try modifying your vista startup registries to get rid of junk startups (Start -> Regedit)

    Here's the registry locations:

    + Run key (machine)
Programs listed in the registry’s HKLM\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key are available at startup to all users.

    + Run key (User)
Programs listed in the HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Run key run when the current user logs on. A similar subkey, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\Run, may also be used.

    try this:
    1. Click on Start
    2. In the Search bar, type "System Configuration" (might need to disable UAC)
    3. Click on "Startup" tab
    4. Uncheck the Startup items you dont want to load.

or you can also type "regedit" in the search bar and go to the registry locations i mentioned previously and delete what u dont want manually

alright thanks, what about this one, my 1080p tv's screen ratio hide the sides of my desktop, tried to configure with hp's media software as instructed but there wasnt the screen ratio option where it should have been. Any other way of adjusting that?

Here is a response I got when I e-mailed HP to upgrade my processor to a quad if available. As you can see the can downgrade you with out canceling but not upgrade you.

    Dear Gary Ong,

We are getting updates daily from the factory on this issue. They did not expect resolution till December and then yesterday I get the word that they might be having a get well date by this Friday. I have yet to hear anything today. Unfortunately I cannot change an order once processed, so you would have to cancel and reorder if you wanted the Quad. But it is not available in the configurator yet so you would need to check back. We hope to have an update soon, and at that time I plan to email all those impacted, especially those that cancelled. I will make sure you are on that list. Apologies for all the confusion. We wanted to do the right thing by pulling it when we heard of the issues. We hope we might be able to resolve it sooner than we thought. That is the good news.

    Warm Regards,

As long as they can "change the order" to reflect the same price it was when we originally ordered, then I am fine with that as I added the two HDs instead of one....
now just waiting for the Fri update.

    Hi Ferris,
If you aren't familiar or comfortable editing the Registry I wouldn't recommend it. You could wind up with an unbootable machine. :(

FYI, I emailed Ryan yesterday and made very clear my wishes to stick with the Quad Core instead of downgrading like I had agreed to the same day.

Of course, I am being very nice and appreciative. Today, he responded with saying he will contact the factory and let them know.

Hopefully (fingers crossed), they will have it fixed by this Friday and we'll all be happy once again!

Your TV needs to have 1:1 pixel mapping. If it's a samsung, this would be called "Scan" mode. If your tv doesn't offer 1:1 pixel mapping there's not a lot you can do about it.

I'm still waiting on this one. I check HP's site every day for sales and to see if the quad processor and 4gigs of ram is back up on it. I might go with the 16 but I really want the extra screen real estate this one has for processing my photographs.

I havent used it outside but im sure its very reflective depending on what the screen is facing, inside if you have the screen facing you your fine but if its tilted up towards a light its pretty bad but slight glares you dont notice because the screen is so bright and crisp.

    I check every 4 hours or so...obsessed I know.

I want the 18t cuz of the quad core processor. If the 16t hade that option I'd go for it in a heartbeat and forget about the 18t.

But since the 18t has the quad core as well as the dual hard drive options I'm sorta hooked onto it.

True....the quad is the key component.

I think someone in here mentioned that the 16t cannot support dual hard drives right?

The thing is Intel PM45 chipset is used in the HDX18t which fully supports the QX9300. Asus G71V uses the same PM45 chipset and it is now shipping with the QX9300 as an option. So I dont know what "Quality" issue HP is talking about.

I just received the 16t I ordered a while back. Love the design but ultimately it felt pretty small to me. So I think I'm definitely gonna wait for the 18t.

Couldn't you run the HDX18t through your receiver instead of direct to your TV? I assume your receiver has HDMI inputs?

Connect HDMI-out from notebook to Receiver's HDMI input, then from receiver's HDMI out to TV HDMI input.

thanks thats what i was thinking but i didnt think my receiver would properly transfer the signal, im a novice so not sure obviously, i'll try and it,thanks again! And my surround sound systems sub went dead out of the blue, im thinking something with the power supply, it happened when i first bought it too, then out of nowhere it worked again, pretty weird any suggestions?

That, too, was what I was getting at. Your receiver acts as an HDMI switcher...multiple in's to one out (your TV). It's an all digital path, so there shouldn't be any loss...

In reality, anytime there's a discontinuity somewhere in the signal path, regardless of the nature of the signal (RF or audio, digital or analog, etc), then signal quality loss do occur, and this is referred to as "insertion loss" :)

I think you mean "theorhetically", because in "reality", there is no loss...since digital is ones and zeros, and there is error correction in the circuits, normal length cabling, etc., should incur no data loss. Signal loss, in digital circuits, don't seem to matter much unless is hits a certain point, in which case you lose signal all together.

Under normal circumstances, those ones and zeros are all the same and create the same picture and sound regardless of "insertion loss". That was my point to the OP. He isn't going to see any better picture on his TV by going direct than he would through his receiver.

Digital data is not lost. This is handled at the physical layer, and the bits end up the exact same on the other end.

It's the very reason you don't need to spend a bazillion dollars on an HDMI cable.

    Hey guys,

I've been following this thread for awhile. I have a couple of questions for those that actually HAVE the 18t...

    1) How hot does it get? Can you put it on your lap?

    2) Is there any touchpad options like in Apple if you mistakenly touch the touchpad with your palms to avoid moving the cursor?

    3) Is it really THAT heavy?

    4) Do you notice the fans being loud at all?

    5) Is anyone considering downgrading to Windows XP?

    Thanks!

It isn't nearly as hot as other laptops so i would say slightly warm but definitely not hot.
There are touchpad options but i havent really fooled with them cause i've had no issues
It depends on what you consider heavy, for it's size its reasonable in my opinion
I havent heard the fan yet, only the hd for a second when doing certain things but that is rare and literally for a second.
First time on vista, a lil too user friendly if your familiar with pc's but im sure i can disable some of that
    Hope that helps...

i was messing w/ the startup and disabled the touchkeys like volume/bass and what not and i cant get them to start working again. It also comes with a number of media players. Not really sure on strengths and weaknesses of each, i always used itunes, what does everyone else use, i know its personal preference but just wondering...

Thanks Ferris, yeah I like to put my laptop on my laps and sit back on my recliner so it's important to me that I can do this, even if it's heavy, that's ok...I just don't want it burning hot...

You can go to start-->run and type: msconfig
You should be able to see your startup options, maybe that can help your problem...

How is the screen brightness? Is it nice and bright/clear and colorful?

Did you get yours with TV tuner? If so, how is that?

    His response:

"Hoping to have good news tomorrow! Fingers are crossed. As of today your PC is expected to ship 10/25."

What does that mean? Expected to ship on 10/25 regardless of whether the QUAD is fixed?
