How much more did the "Dragon" sell for on Ebay? I've been wanting to pick one up in a few weeks.
They are becoming increasingly harder to find. I'll pay a couple hundred more for them than they were on sale for, but not Thousands!

Also, how did you install 8 gigs of ram in your HDX? I didn't know the motherboard supported that much. I didn't even know 4 gig sticks of ram we're out out for laptops yet!

    Thanks so much.

Let's just say it was much more than a couple hundred, but less than a thousand. :D

The HDX20 does support 4GB sticks of RAM. Earlier in this long thread was mention of it, and I pioneered (OK, guinea-pig'd) the effort and discovered that 4GB sticks work fine in Vista 64. Newegg has the best deal around on them.

I talked to an HP rep through their site chat.

    2:30:30 PM Nick
Do they know the release date?

    2:30:36 PM Ruby
This will be available in October, kindly check back on us in the future for this model.

    2:30:48 PM Ruby
The release will be early October.

    2:31:33 PM Ruby
Please try to check back next week, this might be available by then.

    2:31:43 PM Ruby
To protect your investment, I suggest you purchase an Accidental Damage Protection plan. This service covers all parts and labor, but more importantly it also covers a complete range of damage that warranty and service contracts don't, unintentional spills, drops, falls and collisions.

Hahaha, yeah, I got the non-answer and the hard sell on the extended warranty too. I figured it was worth asking them a few things:

DT: So does that cover airbourne contaminants from smoking crack?

    Rep: Sir?

DT: I smoke alot of really harsh drugs, crack, meth, does the repair service cover that?

    Rep: Umm any accidental damage

DT: OK, good, what about human blood - I had a big spill recently

Rep: I, umm sir, if you have any specific questions about the warranty the details are available online

    ...and so on...

Since it hasn't been released, we won't know for sure yet what it does or doesn't have. According to the promo, they've already changed the speakers from Altec Lansing to Bose...

Who knows...Bose has always been known to be an uber-expensive, overly-advertised product whose technology is, according to some reviews, is nothing more than generations old technology repackaged and sold at high prices through the use of "amazing, one-of-a-kind" advertising.

There was an old adage, many years ago..."No highs? No lows? Must be Bose!"

There's good and bad things about Bose. Their surround sound systems are definitely ahead of the curve and have some of the best dynamics I have ever heard.

As a musician, DJ, and general audiophile, I definitely think their PA systems and "mini-systems" like the PC speakers or 3-speaker home theater system are a complete freaking joke.

The HDX18t is now released and up and available on the HP website!

    Starts at 1549.99$

    - up to quad core processor at 2.53GHz QX9300
    - up to a 640 (320x2) GB HDD 5400 RPM
    - unfortunately only 9600M GT GPU
    - 1920x1080p display
    - Blu-ray
    - 8 cell lithium ion battery
    - etc. etc. go check it out!

You might decide to wait for a possibly better video card. Doesn't seem like you are missing out on anything if you hold out (like the HDX16t's upgrade to 1080p resolution was only 25$, now 125$ and the 500$ coupon applied to it -.-)

I am buying an HDX18 and have a couple questions:

Does anyone know if there is an option to overclock the HDX18 from the BIOS (or via software) when using the Quad-Core QX9300 2.53GHz Extreme Processor (multiplier unlocked and designed for overclocking)?

Also, are their Windows XP DRivers available for the HDX18?

    Thanks for the feedback! :)

Wow, that's not priced too bad! If you configure it with the same specs as a dv7, they actually come out to just about the same price. And this also offers a Quad Core Extreme QX9300 CPU for only $200 more than the base P8400!! On the dv7 it costs $550 just to go from the P8400 to the T9600. The upgrade prices on this will probably sky rocket after the first week or so, just like they did on the HDX16t. So if you want to get a fully decked out HDX18, now is the time!!

Fully upgraded with every option maxed out (aside from RAM and Hard Drive, which you can easily do yourself for less money, and Vista Ultimate which is a waste of money), you are out the door for just $1,924 + tax! Then add in $75 to upgrade to 4GB RAM from NewEgg, and you're sitting at an even $2K for a pretty bad-A$$ machine!

Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
    Intel Core2 Quad EXTREME Processor QX9300 (2.53Hz)
18.4" diagonal High Definition HP Ultra Brightview Infinity Display (1920x1080p)
2GB DDR2 System Memory (which you can upgrade to 4GB for $50-$75 from NewEgg)
    512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection (which you can upgrade to 500GB for $89 from NewEgg)
    Webcam + Fingerprint Reader
    HP Color Matching Keyboard
    Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    HP Integrated HDTV Hybrid Tuner
    8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

^ Yup. At max spec for HDX16t and same spec on the HDX18t, the HDX16t is 150$ more than the hdx18t... stupid.

Going for the best options on the HDX18t (no ram upgrade and HDD since you can upgrade that yourself later) it comes to around 1923.99$.

For the HDX16t it comes to 1998.99$... keeping in mind the processor is the T9600 while the HDX18t's is a Quad... and the HDX18t is bigger. The price increase to blu-ray from 100$ to 200$ is killing it. HDX16t should also basically start at 1920x1080p...

Dv7t comes out to $2,288.99 at same specs.

dv5t comes out to $1,999.99 at same specs.

HP need's to get their **** straight on these prices.

edit: just realized you edited your post too and pretty much did the same specs i did to compare.

Wow, that is too bad and plain non-sense from HP. The beauty of the Intel Core 2 Extreme is specifically that its multiplier unlokced for easy overclocking! Oh well, no HDX18 for me. Anyway, thanks for the info, Chango99! :)

The beauty to me is QUAD CORE! Now, we're talking equal to the performance of my quad core desktops!

Plus, who's to say that HP won't implement overclocking in the future!?

For $225 more than the base, I think that is a steal! The Lenovo W700 QX9300-based system with 17" screen is $5299! Comparatively, this one is a steal!

If so, then I'm a thief! Got one with QX9300. Between saving 5% with live.com cashback and using $50 HP coupon they sent me, I saved a little...I sure wish their $400 coupon worked on the HDX18 like it did when I bought my HDX Dragon!

(Which reminds me...I might have to sell my Dragon if I keep the HDX18...)

I just thought, too...if HP designed the HDX18 with somewhat easy access to the CPU, I could always move the inexpensive QX9300 from the HDX18t to another (DELL?) notebook in the future...one that does support overclocking...now, that would be one cheap upgrade! :)

Since when is the HDX18t offering a joke??

Doesn't look like it to me.

On another note- man, it's really unfortunate that HP only has the 9600 GT as a video card. Maybe if we filled their inboxes with angry notes and pleading for better video cards, they'll give us more options?? hahaha

D'Oh they had to make the CPU choice a tradeoff, didn't they? Geesh.

Sure, the Quad-core has a 12MB (!) L2 cache, but it's almost as slow on a single core as my 2 year old system. And It generates about 10W more power thant the T9600, which translates to more heat.

I do like the idea of 4 cores though, I know I could take advantage of that. And the price difference is nice and small.

    Now where's our coupons?? lol.

Can someone clearly explain to me the difference between the Quad and the T9600?

I'm struggling about whether to get it or not...

Also none of the hard drives are 7200RPM. Does that really impact performance or no?

Well, I wouldn't exactly say that a single 2.53Ghz core with a 3MB L2 cache/core is slow. Plus, which 2-year old CPU are you using that is about 2.5Ghz and has more than a 3MB L2 cache/core? A desktop chip or a mobile?

Comparing a single core of a modern multi-core CPU to any older single core CPU is unfair. By your logic, all multicore CPU's nowadays would be slower, per core, than a single core chip of years ago (i.e., comparing a Pentium 4 chip to a QX9300???)

I don't really know that anyone who buys a multi-core CPU uses only one core, so the comparison seems invalid.

In the end, my QX9300 will beat up your 2 year old system! :D

You would really need an application that can utilize multiple cores (such as multimedia processing, etc.) to see any major differences.

I believe, as time goes on, that more and more apps will be written to utilize multiple cores more. Buying a quad core in your notebook, now (especially at the give-away price HP is charging), is a no-brainer for future-proofing your purchase.

If, on the other hand, you're looking for pure speed for gaming, etc., and don't plan on keeping the HDX18 for a long period, then the 2.8Ghz would be a better choice over the 2.53Ghz Quad.

Save your money on the HP HD options. Pick up a 320GB 7200RPM hard drive (or two) at tigerdirect.com now for $90 each. Some here (2.0) have stated that the upgrade from a 5400RPM drive to a 320GB 7200RPM drive is more performance than you'd see upgrading to the 2.8 from a 2.5...
