I understand were you are coming from, but also keep in mind the same was said about 4 gigs as well. I remember when the 4gig was the 8 gig. If you know what I mean. it will be neat to see how and when the tech works it self out. I mean look at the mini now. I think those will take off to a bigger extent than what most people think just due to the portablilty. It is definatly cool time to be watching.

To see more information on the screen, what you want is more screen resolution. That is not dependent of screen size. For the same resolution, the bigger screen size will mean each pixel will be bigger, all your fonts and icons etc.. will appear bigger.

The 18T is no 'big' shakes. Nobody is going to be shocked. There are so many 17" laptops out there, I see Apple 17" everywhere I go all the time. The 18T is just about the same size. Now if you want to turn heads, get the Dragon. The thing is huge, and people will stare. Speaking of which, I watched a video of some guy bringing in his whole desktop with CRT into Starbucks and surfing the net.. lol. He could go to the restroom without fear of the desktop being swiped.. now that's funny.

DDR2 8GB, yeah I would agree with Yarseyer, not many laptops that can use 4Gb sticks. It's still pricey, I'd wait to Q1 next year, but at this point, am more drawn to SSD. SSD is just amazing, I was reading the specs for the Intel SSD. That will definately go down in price, really the only part that has not kept up with advances.

And people.... 18T is nice, just like your last laptop was awesome... till Nehalem comes out next year, quad core with HT and no legacy FSB, now that's going to be incredible.

Just got this email from Ryan! now what?

    Dear Valued Customers,

A few weeks ago your HDX18 order was impacted by a QuadCore CPU Processor Shortage and therefore your order was cancelled or downgraded according to your preference. In my notes, I have you down as a customer that desired notification when the same QuadCore CPU Processor was made available for purchase. This configration will available on our site starting tomorrow, November 21, 2008.

Thank you for your patience and loyalty to the HP brand.

    Warm Regards,

So when exactly are we going to get our laptops?

Has anyone called HP to see what's going on? I was going to do so today but my Thursdays are hectic and I was unable to find time.

I got the same email...it will be interesting tomorrow to see what the upgrade pricing is for the Quad...

My guess is between $700 and $900 more from the base price.

    We'll see!

Well since my shipping is 5-7 day, I really don't have the right to complain just yet....from my research, "clearance delay" can take a couple of days because they have to call HP and confirm what the box is etc...

I will wait impatiently until Monday. If by then, the status doesn't change I will call because I was really hoping to get it before Thanksgiving so I can play with it on turkey day....

    Lol I know right?

Well I'm gonna wait and see how much the quad will cost. If it's not absolutely ridiculous then I'll have a hard decision to make.

Plus I got a 100 dollar off coupon that I didn't use for the HDX 18t that I've got coming so that's another reason why I may have to reorder with the Quad....

But we'll have to wait till tomorrow I guess. Or midnight maybe.

I have a quad desktop, and most of my application isn't designed for quad core, nontheless, all 4 cores do get utilized. I don't game, so have no imput on that.

Too bad the options aren't for the HDX18t! The backpacks are for 16" and 17" notebooks (the HDX18t may fit in the 17", but definitely not the 16" bag), and the power adapters they list specifically state they are only for the HDX16t.

What is interesting is the SSD + 320GB option!!! 80GB SSD, probably the awesome INTEL SSD, plus a 320GB 2nd drive for $550!! Just imagine that option with a 30% off coupon! I need to find out how to get that....Ryan???? ;)

$500 huh? No way...probably $900, like I said earlier, but I think a really good possibility of $1100 more for the QUAD...

Well that's my guess based on their usual pricing scheme when it comes to upgrades.

I think it will be $500 and it's possible it could be $550 or $600. However I don't think it will be any higher than that.

If it is I'll admit that I was wrong although this really isn't a competition and in the end it doesn't matter.

I have a feeling it will be. I haven't seen any other 80gb SSDs around, and they would risk a lot of issues using one of the other brands SSDs which have been quite problematic. Also, wholesale pricing for the drive is $599, so presumably HP can actually get it cheaper than that, or pass on a small subsidy to the customer in order to get profit on full laptop.

There are lots of other brand of SSD, do a search. I believe it is not Intel SSD, ofcourse just a guess. Look at the pricing on all the other drives....they mark it up.

Double check your search. How many of those drives are 80gb? Almost every other brand does a 60/64gb SSD. Intel are about the only 80gb SSD because they use their own 10 chip layout with proprietary controller on board. Almost all other cheaper SSDs use 8 mem chips and the JMicron controller.

I am using the HP xb4 docking station to extend my workspace. I simply connect an external monitor to the xb4's VGA port and enable dualview.
You should be able to do the same with the Quickdock. I hope I answer your need.

Dynadock supports up to 3 monitors:

    I was wrong.

And at that price I'm not biting right now. 30% off though with the same options I had last time around but with the different processor brings my total up to a little bit over $1,900 with tax most likely I think.

Laptop is still in Indiana on Clearance Delay which sucks...

    I was right. :D

It is a lot, but it is market price (what the other vendors are selling it for).

This just proves that the first go-round with the Quad was indeed a pricing mistake, and HP took it in the shorts for us anyways.

    They are to be commended.

HP did take it in the shorts. But they should have stood up like a man about it and tell us what the real problem was instead of trying to shake us down.

A simple, "Hey, we underpriced it. We're taking corrective actions. Current orders will be processed."

The current pricing was to be expected.

Now with the QX9300 being a US$950 option, if your hellbent about the QX9300, IMHO at that price it would be worth to check the out other OEMs with this offering but with DDR3, rather than the DDR2 being offered by HP. At US$225 this was a real bargin.

eh...don't be too hard on them...they're a big company with lots of management making completely opposite decisions...someone there, though, did the right thing in the end. That's all that really matters to me.

As far as other vendors, I don't think you'll find any Dell or Lenovo systems with 30% off coupons (actually, I'm positive), so in the end, waiting for a good coupon on a qx9300-based HP is surely the economical way to go. Plus, DDR3 RAM is so pricey right now, and the performance isn't that much better...I prefer the lesser expensive DDR2, and 8GB of it! :D

Well the woman I spoke to said that it should be here by Monday...which sucks in my opinion. She had no idea why it was being held. All she could say was that it was in "bond" (if I heard her correctly). It's in their hub over there in Indiana.

She offered to transfer me to an international rep but I didn't have time to go thru that crap. Plus al of the time those people really can't help me so I figured I'd save my time and just wait till Monday.

She said there was no chance that it would be here on Saturday.
