@Lancorp: the process that controls the OSD is the HPKBDAPP.exe ("HP QuickTouch On Screen Display"). Do you have the QuickTouch Drivers Installed?
@vistabad: I'd name my computer with the network name "vistabad" if you can figure out WHY IN HELL the TV button doesn't work while in Windows, but works when the computer is off (and starts Vista and then the TV module of QuickPlay)Even though you said that you didn't have a capture card?

hahaha I figured it out!!!
I killed this process: Smartmenu.exe and my on-screen display disappeared. Then i reloaded it and it came back!! Whether you are using 32bit OR 64bit, you have to look into this directory:
C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart
Don't look at the other directory c:\Program Files(x86)\Hewlett-Packard\.....
It's the wrong directory.
Then under the HP MediaSmart directory there's a file called smartmenu.exe!!!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Well, I wish I could help troubleshoot your issue, I don't know how I can though since I didn't get my HDX with the built-in TV Tuner? I'm not familiar with the files etc that it would use....
Sounds like a very silly glitchy issue though on HP's side.... -
-
If your onscreen display works for your volume control, then it should also work for your treble/bass too!!?? -

I just read a post from a user ("Aspen-something") that said to have restored functionality of the TV button by restoring a certain registry key from an original HP image... I didn't have the option to send him a PM, but asked in that thread which were the keys to that.
Also, I read that the QuickLaunch security update blocks the TV button? Is that so? -
Ok then, you have to load up the SmartMenu.exe program!!!! -
I think I'm missing something... -
-
-
Ok first, do you have this directory?
C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP MediaSmart -
Oh ok, so we need to figure out why. But THAT IS THE program for OSD!!! -
-
take a look at the attached screenshot.
Do you have the files that I have?Attached Files:

Let me ZIP up my directory and you can extract my files into your directory and see if it works!! -
Ok, here is the ZIP file for Media Smart, anyone can try this and see if it works for you....

Wow, vistabad deserves some kudos and I'm not even the one with the problem.
I went ahead and downloaded it anyway "just in case" -
It's possible that the setup file that HP provides is missing the important components...that's why no one can get the OSD working when they do a fresh install.... -
The only little "niggle" is that the font in the OSD is too big, and each word is cut off in the middle. -
Oh, I forgot the most important part-- THANK YOU!!
REP to ya!! -
haha no problem! glad to see it worked! Finally we have resolved this issue.
don't know why the font is too big though?
Must feel nice to see the OSD eh?? -

Curiosity: Why are we going through all this effort to do a clean Vista install?
LS -
Some people just like to blow out their machines and ONLY put Vista on it. No other bloatware....
I personally don't feel my HDX came with too much bloatware but I do normally blow out all my laptops and put a fresh OS when I buy them. I just don't like anything else taking up CPU resources if it doesn't have to... -
But are you having any issues? -
-
I just really really hope my laptop doesn't arrive with "issues" after all these horror stories about customer support and defects...
-
I just cleanly installed Vista again, then the ATI drivers, then the QuickLaunch Buttons Drivers, then the Quickplay shipped with the machine found in SwSetup folder, and neither the eject or TV button worked. Then, I went in installing that latest (3.7) QuickPlay, restarted, and recovered the eject button.
So... I guess my last hope for the TV button is for Aspen to answer me... Is there any way to send PMs in this forum? -
Of course you can send PM's, it's near the top right hand corner. -
When I try to access the Private Messages in my Control Panel, it says that I don't have enough privileges. !
Anyway... if somebody else knows about those registry keys that AspenWiedii was talking about to have the TV button working... please post them!!! -
The HDX thread for the HDX dragon is "The official HDX owner's lounge."
BTW, Aspen hasn't been around for a while so there's no telling if he'd see a PM to answer it. -
Yes, I know that this is another thread, but users of the HDX18 seem to have the same problem with that button.
So sad that Aspen isn't around... didn't he or someone else left around the instructions for which registry keys to copy to have the TV button working? How did he find them? -
In any event, he didn't leave instructions or which registry keys IIRC. My guess is that the reg keys are located in HKLM software Quickplay. Copy that section. Then if you're up for it, reinstall the factory OS and compare it to that. Then export the keys to import on the clean install. -
vistabad, you are the man
-
I checked my C:\Program Files and I do not have an HP Media Smart directory. In fact, I don't have any HP directories there at all.
Is there an SW package to install the core programs? I copied the vistabad download, but of course that does not create entries in the registry. -
NEVERMIND! I found it.
It's in the SWSetup folder I copied from the original C drive on my PC. The subdirectory is "MSMenu", and the files in there are as follows:
MPMediaSmartInstallerx64.msi
HPMediaSmartInstallerx86.msi
install.bat
SmartMenu.cva
uninstall.bat
I ran the x64 msi file, rebooted, and the entire top row of buttons now works, the on screen bass/treble display works, and all it well.
That was easy! Thanks VISTABAD!!!! -
What did Palo Alto actually say? Are they going to discipline this guy? (And something should be said to his supervisor.)
I was so happy when I was this tiny notice that I was entitled to "Platinum Tier, toll free phone support 1-866-408-5408 to speak directly with an HP HDX specialist and it is HP Canada! First two guys were great, turns out their site has a correct link to 11/08 graphics driver. From the title I couldn't tell. Then I call and get a guy who really couldn't tell me anything about all the error messages I'm getting. Got "that's printer, talk to your printer manufacturer, that's network, talk to your router manufacturer or ISP" but when I asked about the ones that were clearly HP's own drivers he just told me to use the reinstall disk to repair back to factory setting.
I have had a large number of programs start and then stop and told the first guys I was trying to decide whether to return and and they gave me a number to call to return it 1-888-999-4747. I was thinking of using the "for immediate assistance related to the HP Home and Home OfficeStore, please call 1-888-222-0029. What number did you call for Customer Support? I'm guessing the no. they gave me is Customer Support but maybe not.
Last guy did ask me for my product number as well as Serial No, which the first two didn't do. I gave him the no. from the bottom of the case, and he said it was the wrong no. So I did CONRL+SHIFT+S like the first guy said and lo and behold, there was a different number, which he said was correct! Weird!
He also said if I return it I must run the restore disk to get it back to out of the box condition before I send it back. If I'm going to go to that trouble I'll just return it. Did those of you who returned their laptops and got credit back have to do that? When I've sent my laptop back to the manufacturer to repair, and that includes HP, I deleted personal information but not personal settings and I left my own programs on, they re-imaged anyhow even when it was just replacing a motherboard.
-
ok, so now is there a way to change which programs the mediasmart key brings up? Since I uninstalled the mediasmart stuff, its just calling up windows media players. Is there a way to make it pull up specific programs? even better would to be able to change the icons and use whatever pictures you want to pull up any programs
-
But here's the current kicker: The "estimated delivery date" for my returned computer still shows as January 21 on the HP link. However, I received an e-mail last night that FedEx will be returning my computer to me... today!
What's more, from the tracking info, it looks like they shipped my computer on January 6 with the intent of delivery on the original date (the 7th) but had simply missed the pick-up deadline in time for next-day delivery. That means the entire time I was on the phone with Customer Support regarding the status of my computer -- everyone who was telling me that it would be delayed while they waited for an additional part for the motherboard (even though it was only sent in for a repair to the plastic bevel on the front edge) -- they were totally off. Even as I spoke with HP, my notebook was already in the hands of FedEx and on its way across the country.
I'll be very glad to have the notebook back today if all is in working order. But if there are any problems whatsoever, or if my conversation with the HP rep goes poorly, I'm just glad I'm still within the "holiday return" time frame because I'll send the whole thing back to them, get my money back, and purchase from another manufacturer. That would be sad... but I guess I'm that disappointed. -
Silly me, I don't have my SWSETUP folder and HP doesn't make this whole program available for download (apparently, only an update is on hp.com). -
Quick question. Is the CD/DVD/Blu-ray drive removable (just a pop out). I'm asking because if one wants to change tothe recordable Blu-ray in the future can they?
--Rocco-- -
no problem guys. Anything to make the HDX easier to use....or more fun atleast.... -
I assume you can. There's a company that allows you to take out the optical drive and use it for storage instead. I don't think HP did anything special with the drive....of course you'll have to be able to find the burner specific for the HDX drive somewhere to buy..... -
BTW, saw this on MSNBC this morning! wow!! If Win7 is actually good, it would take some sales
from Apple and it's new Snow Leopard OS....for anyone that's following the new macbook pros,
you will know that is has been plagued with a lot of issues for a premium laptop. (it's made in china)
Microsoft's Ballmer: Windows 7 is nearly final
Beta test version will be available Friday for regular PC users to download
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28549936/
Also: Another blow by MS, Verizon Wireless has chosen them as the default search engine for all
their phones. This was a blow to both Google and Yahoo. Especially Yahoo!!!! -
Just got an email from MS stating Windows 7 Beta is now available for download to MSDN and Technet users (that's me!).
Downloading now...
