Following 2.0 advice (thanks!), I need to ask you a question guys. I cleanly installed Vista x64 in a HDX 9200 with all the drivers. The thing is that the TV button and the eject button (on the keyboard - QuickLaunch) don't work! I installed latest 6.40 release and that's what I got... All the other buttons work fine (QuickPlay, DVD, multimedia, mute, volume, etc), but those two don't!
And this is what is keeping my from even begin to use my new computer, since I NEED to have a clean Vista installation (and not the recovery / bundled HP crap).
Please, someone must have gone through this...
Thanks again to all!

I cannot figure out what programs need to be running to make those work on a clean Vista x64 install....
Anyone? -
Sigh...HP.... -
-
-
-
Great!!!! Glad to hear! -
So if someone wants to take the time to figure out all the HP services running, I can compare it to mine.
Also check MSCONFIG to see what executables are started on bootup... -
Anyway, someone who has a clean Vista, please comment on this. Thanks! -
-
In MSCONFIG, I have six HP related applications that get started.
Do you guys have this to? -
HpqToaster.exe, hpqwmiex.exe, hpservice.exe, HPWAMain.exe.
Like Dan Aykroyd said, if you kill the HP processes, one by one, and test for the eject and OSD, it would help pinpoint which one
makes them work... -
In my unclean Vista install, I have non that start with HP started and only HP MediaSmart under msconfig and even with that off, my buttons still show up and work.
Also, for those testing out disabling services, with some services you need to reboot to actually see the effect. -
Well, my HP HDX18 is officially on its way to me. Two day shipping from China (lovely...). Guess it should be here by Friday or Saturday. Unfortunately I'll have no playtime until after Saturday 3pm because thats when I will have completed taking the GRE which I really need to pass. *sigh*
Keeping my fingers crossed for no defects or issues.

Another Update on my Experience with HP:
On December 23, I sent in my HDX 18t for repair. The repair order is listed as "cosmetics part replaced to make like new" on the ticket. (Basically the front silver bevel was never fastened securely... not a big deal, but really annoying.) I received a notice from HP that I could expect my notebook returned to me on January 7 (today).
Since the status wasn't updated, it was pretty obvious that I would not be receiving the notebook back today. So I called yesterday for an update, and was told I'd receive something by e-mail later in the day. When nothing arrived, I called back at the end of the day and was told to expect information about delivery today.
Still nothing, so I called again this morning. This is when I ran into the most surprising, unpleasant experience I've ever had with any company's Customer Support.
I spoke with a representative who spoke with a very thick accent. I had difficulty understanding him and had to ask him to repeat himself several times. He apparently had a similiar problem, because he asked me to repeat myself as well. When he finally said something about "waiting for a replacement motherboard part," I became concerned. Why would tech support be fooling around with my notebook's motherboard when it was only in for a plastic bevel to be glued down properly?
Trying to get more information became both frustrating and amusing. So I finally asked if there might be someone else I could speak with. That's when I was called a "stupid American." After a moment of being stunned, I asked to speak with a supervisor. He said that he could not escalate my call without documenting a good reason. I said that I have two. For one thing, I didn't understand his comments about repairs to my motherboard. But more importantly, I wanted to speak with a supervisor regarding his insulting remarks. He said those are not good enough reasons and that he declines my request to be transferred. I repeated my request several times to no avail.
He then asked if I was a computer technician. I asked how that was relevant and he replied that I'm obviously not smart enough to know what a motherboard is and that I should really learn how to speak English. (By the way, I've been a full-time public speaker for a living for the past two decades.) The call concluded with him hanging up on me.
Attempts to follow up and report this experience were nothing short of frustrating. I called a different HP number and spoke with a nice woman named Crystal. She said that there was no record of my notebook needing a new motherboard, and that I should be receiving the unit back by the end of the week. But she wanted to transfer me to Customer Support specific for the HDX so I could report my experience. After sitting on hold, I found myself back to the same department that I started with (including speaking with an accented individual, though I had no trouble understanding him). When I asked to be escalated to a supervisor as Crystal had instructed me, he declined and said that there was no point in reporting the problem further.
I finally contacted someone at HP in Palo Alto, CA, to report what happened, and they responded in a professional, appropriate way. Still, I feel really kind of stunned at the whole thing.
Here's hoping that I get my notebook back soon, and that I never have to deal with HPs Customer Service again. Bleh.
EDIT: Hmm. The status of my repair has just been changed to reflect a return delivery date of 1/21. So much for it being shipped back to me "by the end of the week." Grrrr... -
HP does not do anything in USA.
Obama needs to Taxing this kind of outsourcing ventures more heavily in favor of Job creation in USA. -
In task manager, I have 7 processes that start with HP--....I have tested 3 by turning them off and they had no effect on my on-screen display. Can anyone shed some light on what the final 4 does?
HPHC_Service.exe = OK
hhpservice.exe = OK
hpqwmiex.exe = OK
????
===========
HpqSRmon.exe
HpqToaster.exe
HPWAMain.exe
hpwuSchd2.exe -
OK, this was in the back of my head, but look here. I have the 18T with a freekin 16T trackpad! What the?
-
My trackpad looks just like the one on the right, the big image.... -
Now, I had experienced with HP last year and suffice it to say, it was actually pretty good. The only annoying thing was that they were using VOIP phones and i noticed there was packet delay. Other than that, the INDIAN guy understood my issue with my HP tablet that I bought and within 7 days it was all fixed and cleared.
But still, this HAS GOT TO STOP! Stupid Americans? Are you friggin' kidding me!!!! -
We must all write to Obama to keep his Campaign Promise, Taxing outsourcing ventures, in favor of Job Creation in USA.
-
On my clean Vista with every driver installed, I have in processes manager:
- HPHC_Service.exe
- HpqToaster.exe *32
- hpqwmiex.exe *32
- HPWAMain.exe *32
- hpwuSchd2.exe *32
... and in the Msconfig:
- HP Health Check Scheduler
- HP Quick Launch Buttons
- HP QuickTouch On Screen Display
- HP Wireless Assistant
- HP Wireless Assistant (yes... it's duplicated!)
- hpwuSchd Application
And that's it.
I think that the buttons should work by installing the QuickLauchn Buttons drivers, it should be enough. But for some reason, nor the TV or eject button do.
What's your behavior? Are these the buttons that doesn't work neither for you, or are there any others? -
ahh, but you don't seem to be running hpservice.exe or HpqSRmon.exe.....
BTW, are you not seeing on-screen volume controls?
When I click on the eject button, it doesn't eject my drive either, I don't know if that's ever worked for me out of the box, I've never tried it until now....does it only work if there's a CD in it? -
As for the TV button, it only appears to work with the version of quickplay that shippped with your HDX. I wouldn't sweat it as long as the quickplay button works you can navigate to the TV section of the software. -
I've said it before, the quicklaunch under msconfig is not it. I haven't narrowed it down, but it seems to be a windowns related service because at one time, I disabled about 20 services and the buttons would stop showing up on screen, and the trebel/bass stopped working.
I've since rolled back my install twice, the first time because it's too many services to narrow down. But I managed to disble everything HP and the buttons still show up and work. Then one day (like in 2 days) it stopped working for some strange reason, so I rolled vista back again. Now it's working again, even with all hp services and msconfig turned off. I do have IDDT and HP Media Smart on under msconfig because I am getting intermittent popping sound otherwise. There are some services I don't have on your list, but maybe it's because I am on Home Premuim 64 and also i did not configure HP Wireless Assistance for example. -
we need jobs back in America. I don't care who does it. Company's outsource because it's cheaper, end of story. There must be incentives to keep jobs in America.
I don't want to get off topic, but enough is enough..... -
I'm beginning to get determined to figure this out, eventhough it's not my problem!!! -
I have the 2 quickplay services disabled, and my buttons all still work FYI. QPCapSvc and QPSched.
-

-
C:\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard\TouchSmart\Media -
Maybe this will help. Home Premuim 64, with some services disabled, but buttons still work. Compare yours with mine and see what i'm running that you're not.
-
The QuickPlay service wasn't listed in mine because I just uninstalled it. But after 2.0 post, I got the idea to reinstall and efectively the eject button works! It must be that QuickPlay's doing the action to open the tray... I don't know.
But about the TV button (one to go!!!), it still doesn't work. I installed QuickPlay from CyberLink's page (latest available), QuickPlay from HP support and QuickPlay from the SwSetup folder (supposedly, the version that came installed, right?), and it still doesn't work.
@2.0: Which version should I install in order to have the TV button working? -
Just jumping in here (avoiding the ice storm outside
!)
In my System startup, I have:
QlbCtrl.exe as an HKLM_RUN
QlbCtrl.exe as an x64_RUN
In Services, I have
HP Service.exe
hpqwmiex.exe
Com4QLBEx.exe
I know there are HP "things" I did not install after the "clean install", but I wanted this thing to run " really clean"! -
Great so we fixed that issue!!! Now we know!!
I can't help you with the TV button because I don't have a TV tuner.... -
-
Don't know what you want me to compare, but my buttons all work. -
Once we can figure out all the setup files, we should make a list for everyone.
I stuck with the original factory install because I got lazy and I don't really see that many bloatware that bothers me... -
Ok, see if you can find the touchsmart setup file from HP's support site and install it and see what happens? there's a bunch of files and directories!! -
I'm wondering if one has the program install but still disabled, it would cause the button to work. I can only assume that's why it's still working for me. Dan, since you have quickplay installed, can you diable it and see if the eject still works? That would confim my theory. -

-
Another thing I found that is making me mad....: if the computer is off and I turn it on by pressing the TV button, Vista loads and... IT STARTS THE TV! Then why in hell doesn't it work while in Windows!!!???

FWIW, if anyone was following the earlier discussion on the Kensington thin and light Universal chargers, frys.com had them for $15 and I got mine today, and they come with a bevvy of tips, including the tip (N30) for the HP!
Here's the link if anyone is interested. -
Deal!! Just to make sure, YOU want to be able to see the on-screen display when you up/down the volume and treble/bass right?
