Do you mean the touchpad is plain? Because if thats what I get I'm sending it back, also Ive seen the headphone jacks on the front of the Notebook AND on the side, could you tell me where yours are placed? Thanks -
-
Well I will be ordering mine around April 3rd. So for me, I'd use the 30% off coupon if there is one even though it doesn't work w/ any other coupons.
I think that the $400 off coupon might be a better deal than the EPP, but I'd have to check.
So which ever is out there and which ever combo makes it cheaper when I order is what I am going w/.
-
I think what he meant that he got the HDX16 touchpad that everyone else is getting. It's different in that, the fancy design lines don't match the lines on the touchpad itself.

I can plug it in and then let it drop down, there seems to be about 8-10 degrees movement end to end. I'm sure there is 1/4 of play at the outside end where the tab is located. I'm just worried that it it might not hold up and will fall out or break off if it's "not normal". I'm not sure where it's coming from but it has to be inside somehow or the fitting.
I have never had a laptop with such a wide connector but also have never seen and play in it like this... -
Thanks for letting me know.
-
I was wondering if people here would share what kinds of things I need to check for when my HDX 18t is delivered? Things you might have had an issue with on the Notebook such as keyboard, screen and the like. I want to make sure everything is in good working order before my 21 day return policy expires. Thanks all.

That was an 200.00 coupon plus the HP instant discount of 200.00 for a total of 400.00, so I'm a bit unclear as to wheather you could use the 25% off plus HP's 200.00 instant discount that their selling it for now, which is $1299.99 (basic).
-
I went with the $400 off rebate.

25% OFF Any HP Laptop*
SPRING BREAK SALE*25% off web-only coupon for the purchase of an HP Notebook PC when you purchase a Notebook accessory valued at $50 or greater on same order. Excludes HP G60 and HP G70 series, Special Edition, Mini, and Compaq Notebooks.
Coupon Code: NB2388 Offer limited to the first 1800 coupons redeemed.
Offer Expires: 03/21/2009
UPDATE: I went to hp.com (03-18-09) and added the HDX 18t to my cart, I wanted to see how much my order would have been had I used the new 25% off coupon when you purchase an accessory for 50.00. After I put in the coupon code (NB2388) it said this: "We have compared the coupon submitted to the available instant savings and applied the best offer. Promotion rules allow only the coupon or instant savings to be applied to any item". So, at the time I placed my order HP let me use the 200.00 off coupon PLUS the 200.00 hp instant savings. I guess their changing the rules about how coupons can be used if they offer an instant discount. -
That's where everything ends up in the long run, right?

I'm looking at this PC vs the Asus G71G (with Quad-Core)
Is there an advantage to the HP over the Asus other than the larger screen?
Also, does anyone know whether the mic-in can be set to be a stereo line-in as in other HP notebooks?
Thanks!
-Andy. -
The headphone jacks are on the right hand side of the notebook, towards you as you face it, and not in the front.

I have had 2 HDX18t's and both had lots of play in the plug. Hasn't seemed to be a problem. Might even be able to put this spin on it "If the plug were to get pulled at an angle, the additional play would allow it to angle slightly and then come out vs. breaking off"
-
Good luck getting it replaced. I have only been able to get one person at HP to say it might be the HDX18t touchpad. They are all coming like this - I have not seen one post where it wasn't. Both of mine were. I even sent one back with the touchpad problem and debris behind the glass - both were supposed to be fixed. Only the debris was. They said I could send it away for another week, but no promises

Hi there all,
I have a HDX18 and I am looking to update the CPU. Does any one Have the instructions or guide as to how to do this? I can remove the panel covering the hard-drives etc. but that doesn't give me the access I need.
Please help,
Confused. -
Some HP coupons are stackable with the instant rebate, and some aren't. Generally, the ones for $200 - $250 are stackable, and the ones for 30% off almost never are (though I once saw one that was -- that was an amazing deal!).
-
I bet that was a ton of money off! I did the math on a Basic Config for the HDX 18t that sells for 1499.99. If HP continues to offer the 200.00 rebate, and you can use a coupon for 200.00 off or more, not the percent off coupon, you save the most money. If someone however spends more than this for extra's, which is really almost a waste other than for more ram, then the coupons for a percent % off is a better deal. It really seems to be the difference of about 100.00 or an extra 5%-8% off when extras are added.
-
I know it seems repetitive when people ask the same questions. Could someone please help me with this one question I have about the HDX 18t?
I just want to know the kinds of things I need to check for when mine arrives. Ive read threw most of the threads and have picked a few things up. I was hoping someone or several people could reply to come up with a make-shift list of things to go over. Thank you to everyone who contributes here to help people become more informed! -
The 90w adapter will not damage your notebook. I use a 90w adapter on my HP docking station (xb3000). It probably won't fit, though. I believe the HDX16t has a smaller power input. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
-
There's really nothing special to look for. Just fire it up and go for it. Check the sound, and check the setting for the screen (color settings) and that's about it. You'll probably be smiling so much that you won't notice anything strange for a while anyway!
-
Yeah, that sounds about right!
Also, check for dead pixels. I am sure you were going to already though.

So you want to upgrade the processor?
I know it can be done. Someone has even upgraded to a Quad I believe on the HDX16. You may want to check that thread.
Also, search this thread. There may be something about how to do it in here somewhere.

Can anyone help me with the clicking sound when you adjust the volume? I know it's in this thread somewhere but I can't find any help

I'm going to make a list of everything I've read threw in this thread, so that as new people receive their new HP HDX 18t's they will have something to refrence as to what to look for if there are any issues.
1. Check the screen for dead pixels. There are free programs that can help with this like dead pixel buddy, you can get it here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/Dead-Pixel-Buddy.shtml
*also look for any dings, paint chips or scratches in the notebook that might be there, I'll bet you dont want a refurb when its supposed to be brand new! Ive also read about someone finding debris behind the screen, so of course you would notice this and take action.
2. Check your system configuration to match what you ordred, i.e. Hard drive size, system RAM, Processor type, video card and DVD/ROM drive.
3. Check the A/C end on the notebook, their have been some complaints about this being loose when the power adapter is pluged into it.
4. Pop off the back panel and make sure you have 2 bays for each hard drive, (for those who only have one with their order). Their have been complaints about their being only one bay. I read a post where someone only had one bay and wanted to add a second hard drive later on. Its to my understanding that this notebook should have 2 bays regardless of how many are in yours, i.e. 1 or 2 when your ordered.
5. Check every key function as their have been complaints about non-working keys or malfunctioning keys.
6. Check all of your inputs, i.e. USB, HDMI, firewire, express card slot and the like. Even though you might not use all of these right away, you would'nt want to ignore this and find out ones broken when its too late!
7. Download a program that can monitor your new HP HDX. Now i'm not talking about overclocking, just something that can give you basic information like heat, fan speed, RAM and cpu activity. I know there are several gadgets and free programs for this.
8. I didnt want to mention this however its been a big topic in this thread so I will. Some people have noticed that the touchpad that comes with the HDX 18t is the same as the one you get with an HDX 16. What's been noticed is that the "lines" that run threw the touchpad are not even with the "fluid design" on the notebook itself, meaning they dont match up. So from what I've gathred your pretty much stuck with whatever design you get. It seems that HP is hard pressed to send the one that people are after, which was the original design they first made.
9. Another shorter but well noted toipc is that of the A/C jack on the side of the Notebook. Some have mentioned that when the A/C cord is pluged into the jack on the notebook it looks crooked or at an angle. I cant speculate because it dosent seem to bother anyone very much. I mention this for one reason: If the angle is too steep, that could cause a problem over time, rendering the jack input on the mb to become loose thus eventually breaking. I read however that this is somewhat an easy fix. That would be relative to your knowelge about PC hardware I guess.
10. Most of all if there is something your having trouble with you can ask here or call HP Home and see if they can get your question answered. The biggest reason I stared this post was because unlike some, I had to work my butt off to get this new HP HDX 18t, and if there is something wrong with it, I cant afford to buy another one, or spend hundreds fixing a hardware problem down the road, after all we only have 21 days to figure out if there will be any problems.
I want to thank everyone for contributing to this thread, their are alot of helpful people here who made me feel welcome, so thank you again for all your participation!
If any HP HDX "Guru" or anyone who has knowlege about any other known issues, please add to this post for those who are just getting their new HP HDX 18t's as you see fit. -
thank you so much! UNDERD0G

Your so very welcome, how about some rep points? -

Quick question...I just purchased a Kensington 33197 adapter for my HDX18, but on the Kensington website, it states that the HDX needs over 125 watts and that they don't make an adapter for it. Is it really fine to use the 33197? Will it under power it and / or damage the HDX?
....and they have a back lit option now? What the? I just order mine 2 weeks back and it wasn't an option.....eerrgg. -
I think the hdx18 uses a 180w adapter.
-
shouldn't, they should use LED lighting, which produces very little heat.
-
I am thinking of getting an HDX18 with a single 320GB 7200rpm drive, then adding an 80GB Intel X25-M as the primary OS and apps drive and leave the 320 for data. This would of course require a re-install of the OS. Anyone done something similar on the HDX18? Any issues doing a fresh install of Vista onto the SSD? Since I am changing the config slightly, I assume I cannot use the restore disk to restore to the SSD, but have to do a regular install of Vista, right?
Thanks. -
where i can find and download HP Recovery and backup manager?
i want to create DVD recovery disk but i don't have this program, because earlier i kill my system (but recovery disk d: present)
Help me please. -
I can't tell you whether it will damage the unit or not, but I brought two of these adapters and they have been powering my unit with no signs of deficiency.
-
does anyone know how to get access to the fan for cleaning/replacing on the hdx18? Do all the screws on the back panel need to be removed?
-
Nope...120W.
-
intersting. on HP's site they sell a 180w ac adapter for the hdx18: http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/computer/categories/ac_adapters/1/accessories/GL690AA%23ABA
-
But the one that comes WITH the HDX18t is 120W (at least my two are, including one that I just received last week).
-
The HDX that Kensington is referring to is probably the HDX dragon. They do not claim compatiblility with the HDX18. However, I and others on this forum have used the 33197 with the N30 and N30B SmartTip successfully. My HDX18t 1000CTO comes with a 120 Watt power adapter from HP. I use the Kensington 33197 with the N30B tip and have not had any problems to this point.
-
Hm that's interesting. Great news though. I was really hoping I could get an auto/air/ac adapter, and now it looks like I can
-
I use the Intel X25-M as the primary drive and a 7200rpm 320GB hdd for backups and large video files. Before installing the Intel SSD, I created a backup image of the original drive with Norton Ghost, installed the SSD, then restored the image from the original drive to the SSD with no problems at all. It was quick and simple. However, if you are going to do a fresh install of Vista, you will have to reinstall all of the drivers for your hardware so make sure you back them up from your original hard drive first.
-
Here is a link to the HP Parts store, so folk can order exact replacements, rather than generic accessories
HP Parts site -
Mine came with a 120W also.
I bought a second AC adapter for my xb4 (docking station) and HP said use the 180W - which seems to make sense to me. -
I'm considering the HDX18t (with Quad-Core) and am comparing it to the Asus G71G. Has anyone else compared these two?
What I'm wondering is: other than the screen size and remote control, are there any other advantages of the HDX over the G71G?
Does anyone know if the mic-in can be set to stereo line-in?
Thanks!
-Andy.
