    To Heyroth

Can you snap a photo of the mini with it's webcam open? I'd like to see what 0.3 megapixels look like.

Sure, I'll do it later tomorrow. I'll do a screen capture. And I'll use my m1330 (1.3 mp) so you can compare.

    hi there,

how is the SSD connected, is it via PATA like the 1.8" harddrive alternative.

Mini 1000 is just like my Aspire One, except my One has 100 GB larger HD, 6 cell battery instead of 3 cell like the HP Mini, and at $399 my One cost less.

Seriously, if I could get the 1000 with 10" screen, bluetooth, and 6 cell battery for $450 I'd prefer it to the Aspire since even a 20 GB HD would be big enough for my needs.

Uhhhhh... the difference between 640x480 and 1280x1024 is actually more like a factor of 4.

I've been searching up on the HP Mini 1000 and I came across something rather disturbing... Apparently the proprietary video out requires a dongle, as pointed out by other posters, but the dongle costs $79. What the hell, HP? Way to jack up the price for basic functions.

i bought a quick dock docking station for my dv7t and IT DID NOT COME WITH A POWER CABLE.

this absolutely sucks because all of the IBM's i have, all the dockers came with cables. so now i have to shell out $79 (magic 'rip off' number that HP uses on a few accessories) just to have another power supply.

so at my desk, i have the power supply / laptop connected and when i want to take the laptop into my bedroom to watch a movie as i fall asleep, i have to bring my fckin' power cord too - detach it from the quickdock, detach the power connection, etc.

    and $79 for a frickin' power cable? w t f.

what sucks is paying $79 for a little adapter for your $399 netbook... that's practically 20%-25% of the cost of the laptop. w t f again.

maybe if i feel generous, for christmas, i may pick one up. but for now im just pissed. i spent nearly 2 grand on a laptop from hp and they cant give me (and all quick dock buyers) a simple cable that costs them maybe $.50 to make...................

The more I read about the Mini, the less I'm liking it. (already wasn't a big fan due to screen resolution)

1.8" PATA drives, really? Or is that only for the SSD interface?

@sgtowen: I purchased the drive off of eBay here where it's $125 shipped. The Live Cashback program gave me back $31 or so bucks, so I figured it was a pretty good deal.

It's also worth noting that installing the drive was a bit of a hassle. PM me if you decide on doing it.

instead of spending $525+ on a mini, i splurged, and for $360 more, i bought a nicely optioned dv4t instead. specs are in my signature below.

certainly it cost more than the mini, and it's much larger than the mini, but i would have felt silly spending $525+ on a machine which could not handle other tasks i may want it to do...

fwiw. i still think the mini's rock.

I'm thinking of getting the HP 1000 and am wondering about the SSD vs HD option. Anyone have any thoughts on (1) boot time and (2) wakeup time from sleep with SSD vs HD with this machine?

It is a given that boot times are faster with an SSD so wakeup times should also follow suit. The thing to consider here is whether or not that difference of a few seconds is worth going to an SSD option while losing a significant amount of storage space.

if bootup/wakeup time is more important and disk space is not important, then go with SSD.

if bootup/wakeup time is not so important but displace is important, go with a regular hard disk.

Does anyone know what the connector is for the HDD in the Mini 1000? I know it’s a 1.8” PATA drive, but I am not sure if the connector is ZIF or something else? The service manual doesn’t say – and I can’t make what the connector is from the pictures.

Basically, I would like to install this 32GB 1.8” SSD Drive, but I am not sure if it’s compatible with the HDD version of the HP Mini 1000:

    http://rocketdisk.com/product_info.php?cPath=15&products_id=83

…it’s at a great price, and is large enough for Vista (if you disable updates). Any info would be greatly appreciated!

I have been researching that exact option except the 16 GB version. From what I can tell even among the 3 HDD option for the mini there are 3 slightly different drive dimensions, so when it comes to getting a replacement drive that also has slightly different dimensions it's a tricky prospect. I think the connector would be fine though. But I really wish they'd standardize the 1.8 inch drive dimensions! Worse comes to worse and you have to rig up something to hold it in place because I think that the MTron drive is slightly smaller than the HP drives. Maybe just a piece of paper or something to hold it in place. I don't know friend I'm on the fence about this. If you do it let me know and vice versa.

    Update:
The 3 drive dimensions from HP are:
    60GBHDD: 54x70x9.5mm
    8GB SSD: 54x32x2.6mm
    16GB SSD: 54x32x3.75mm
The MTron Drives referred to in the above post are of the following sizes:
    16GB and 32GB: 54x71x8mm

All drives are technically 1.8 inch PATA drives. It looks like the MTron drives will in all likelyhood fit into the Mini 1000s with the 60GB HDD, but I really want to know if they'll be able to fit into the SSD versions, because while the SSDs HP provides are clearly a lot shorter, it is unclear whether they are housed in a tray that makes them effectively the same size as the 60GB HDD unit, in which case the tray could be discarded and the drive could just be slotted in no problem. I've sent a support request to HP asking about this but I kind of doubt they are going to answer me to be honest. If anyone has any new leads on this or would be willing to pop open their Mini with SSD to take a look it would be most appreciated. Thanks everyone.

    Hi guys,

Hopefully this will help. We have had a few customers purchase the Mtron 1.8" SSDs for their HP Mini 1000s, & we have not heard of any problems. Check out myhpmini.com /forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&p=266 and you can see a relevant discussion. Also the dimensions of the SSD (same for 16GB & 32GB) are actually 71.0mm x 54.0mm x 5.0mm. This is the "ZIF2" & is what Mtron have released for production.

Hey JonnyRocketDisk do you have any thoughts on whether the MTron drives could fit in the SSD versions of the mini and not just the HDD version? The SSDs that come with the mini are significantly smaller in one direction so do you know if they have a removable cage or tray for them that could be removed to fit in a larger drive? If you can convince me that this is the case then you'll have my purchase, but I'd need some real proof here.

OK. Here's all the information that we have!

This is the HP Mini 1000 NetBook Maintenance and Service Guide - h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01590181.pdf. All 105 pages!! It states that it "Supports all 4.57-cm (1.8-inch) parallel ATA (PATA) hard drives" and if you look through all the detailed measurements further down it appears that it will fit inside with no problems. It actually gives detailed instructions on how to remove the existing SSD & replace it! You can see on Page 37 that there is a removable bracket. But I have not seen the inside of the HP Mini 1000 myself, so I guess I am reporting 2nd hand!

Also, here is a link to a RocketDisk customer using this SSD in his HP Mini 1000 - myhpmini.com/forum/some-initial-thoughts-a-quick-review-t106.html

I just got opened mine today and here are a few thoughts:

    • The screen isn't all that bad (I got the 8.9" - I'm used to the big bezel of the Asus Eee 701)
    • Two USB ports isn't enough
    • It's light (or at least it feels light)
    • There is a huge amount of flex in the palmrest and the display, but none in the keyboard.
    • The keyboard is almost too big, because there is no room in the palm rest.

Overall I like it. I'll take a few pictures tommrow and answer any questions that you ask.

One thing I noticed is that on first boot, the 8GB SDD was almost filled, 6.5ish was used due to a page file and the hibernation file.

is the place to go for info on the SSD replacement. Logn story short yes you can put any 1.8 inch drive in, but you'll have to remove the propriatary USB drive port on the SSD versions to fit the larger drives. Also, might need to use some tape to secure the new drive.

Okay - got my HP mini 1000 this weekend. 16GB SSD, 10in screen, no BT. Here are my thoughts: (I also posted this at myhpmini.com)

    Pros:
    - This thing is a beauty. Think along the lines of Apple quality and looks. I personally like the full glass screen edge to edge look. The mini is light, and slim. I also like the design on the lid. Clearly a head turner.

    - I heard plenty about the how good the keyboard is. Well, my expectations were very high, and this thing has met or exceeded what I expected. I don't think you can engineer a better keyboard for a netbook. This is a great thing, if not the most important feature on a netbook.

    - I like how low profile the laptop is with the screen open. It is not tall at all, which is nice.

    - The positioning of the SD slot is slick. Out of the way so it does not stick out.

    Neutral/Mixed/Okay:
    - Trackpad is just okay. I think they could have made it a little taller instead of placing and off/on button in between the trackpad and the keyboard.

    - I was hoping the screen would open a little a little wider angle at the max. In other words, if I am using the laptop while standing at the kitchen counter, I'd like to move the screen back just a tad more. It isn't bad - minor thing.

    - More on the screen. It is fine. It isn't a 'wow' you with superior clarity type of screen. It is decent, but not spectacular like I would describe some sony vaio screens.

    - 2 USB slots are fine with me. Others have expressed that this is a bummer.

    Cons:
    - I think this is still just a hair too high price-wise. They will probably sell alot and the price will come down, but initially just a little high when compared to other Netbooks. I suppose you get what you pay for, however.

    - 3 cell battery means I have to spend another 50-100 bucks on a six cell battery when available. On the flip side, I think the 6 cell battery will help angle the laptop forward. When laid flat with the 3 cell, this thing lays FLAT with no angle whatsoever. I prefer a slight angle when typing

    - The SSD speed is inconclusive to me at this point. I have seen one or two slow stutters when browsing, but not sure I'd name the SSD the culprit.

    Versus the Asus 1000HA:
    - I also own the Asus 1000h. Mini is much smaller than Asus. Mini has much better keyboard and looks. Doesn't seem to display finger prints as badly as the asus. The Asus has better storage options, and also much better battery life (due to 6 cell). I also hate the trackpad on the ASUS due to the poorly implemented gesture thing.

    - Price wise, Asus obviously wins. If these two were the same price, the Mini would win hands down. Asus has better storage options with a fantastic 160 GB HD.

    - As owner of both, I would take the HP Mini over the Asus in most circumstances.

    Summary:
I think this is the best looking netbook on the market, along with the best keyboard. HP has a winner here. It is not the perfect netbook, but if you are in the market for best of class at the moment for these specs, (1.6 atom, 10 in screen), this would get my vote.

After changing the RAM to a 2GB stick up from the 512MB stick, my Mini 1000 gets much much hotter under the RAM slot. I understand that more RAM=more power draw=more heat, but is anyone else noticing that the heat increase is pretty drastic?

The bottom of the HP Mini 1000 looks like it gets horrible ventilation-- it's relatively low and there aren't many vents. I can imagine the unit getting unbearably hot after an hour of use.

Has anyone tried to do anything about the thermals on the Mini 1000? I think when my new MTron SSD gets here I'm going to do a total teardown and check the thermal paste situation adn maybe put some arctic silver 5 on the CPU and GPU. I'm also considering getting a thin sheet of copper and placing it against the RAM module, because there is about a mm or so of clearance between the RAM and the cover and it could use some thermal dispersion. If I go through with it I'll take pics and post the whole process, but has anyone tried to do anything like this already? My temps are 50-70C idle, which seems pretty high to me, although I think the shutdown temp for Atom is something like 130C. Thanks all.

got my hands on with the mini at my local bestbuy...

I really like the form factor. It is pretty small and sleek for a 10 inch netbook-- makes my EEE look fat.

This mini would become the perfect netbook for me if it offered a matte screen and a 6 cell battery. It is just so sleek looking... its hard to resist.

It looks nice, but it's way to pricey compared to other netbooks. I like the looks of mini 1000 and its Linux operating system. I don't like the bubble looking graphics on the lid, it looks girly to me, and it seems that Hp is using some kind of graphics on most of their laptops. I just hope they make 6 cell that sits flush not elevated like in 2133. But, they should of used Vista on it. If Via C7 ran it ok, then im sure Atom in mini 1000 will ran it alot better. I've heard that Atom runs vista fine. I am still waiting for ultimate netbook which will come with Vista that runs good.

The mini is the most stylish of the current lot out on the market. Like many sports cars it may not be the most practical for a run around town..... but it sure will pull a few looks :)

I am so excited that a Windows company have released such a beauty.... It compares with the quality build of Mac.... and since Apple haven't gotten round to making one this small I am now officially a switcher (Mac >> PC!). Sorry Steve

As far as performance goes I guess its middle of the road, but then I am not going to use it as my primary computer. Surf, chat and the occasional email... It will also be nice to take on trips instead of lugging a regular size laptop around. As for the VGA out? I never use it so glad its not there... just wish they had covered up this port as they did with the ethernet socket.

What's even better is that MobileMe sync's my data seamlessly with the HP...

Yeah... who is going to put a hundred gigs on one of these?

It is supposed to be a NET-book afterall.

And as for VGA out .. I have never used the slot on a laptop more than 5 times in my entire life.

And 2 USB ports is more than enough for most as well (again.. its a supposed use is portable device.

And that makes me come to my concluding remark:

    This beauty is truly portable!

There are some things great about it, and some things that kill the portability of the machine.

The EXTREMELY glossy screen will make it very hard to use outdoors, or in high-light situations, and the 3 cell battery... really was a big misstep.

As of right now, i still think the eee 1000h is the best netbook on the market.

Ok. Been using my my mini1000 that I got on BF. I have had it for 36 hours and I am impressed with it. This sucker is sleek and can do the basic net surfing fine. It's not the fastest thing but what do you expect with a non-dual core. I got this @ Best Buy and saved $40 off of what it would cost directly from HP. Has 1 gig ram and .3 mp camera. Only complaint is my space bar sounds like a squeegee. weird. Was going to go for acer aspire one but saw this and its keyboard is the best on a netbook I've seen. I played w/eee pcs at Best Buy awhile but this is better. I'm currently typing this post off of mini1000. Was able to pick up my wifi signal at home within 5 mins of booting up. Have seen boot up times of 40-50 seconds. Will post more tomorrow.

Yes. I've transferred some music to it from a micro sd card w/adapter.

I plan to get a SDHC card and store most of my files on the card instead of the SSD. Would this make the 1000 perform slower when accessing files?

And can I actually install programs on a SDHC card and run them?
