bought the HP Mini 1000 for my wife to replace her Dell notebook. She does light word-processing, internet, saves photos, and a little excel.
A few thoughts and procedures, then some questions:
This machine comes with XP. Perfect.
The keyboard is by FAR the best netbook keyboard we tried. That's why we purchased this netbook. Keyboard size is everything, and this one has a 92%-size standard keyboard.
It boots up faster than any of our vista machines in the house. Sad.
I modded an 8-gig USB thumbdrive to work as the "HP Proprietary" drive. The system came with a 2 Gig HP "additional" drive, but when I looked in the slot, it's just a deeply recessed USB port. So, I stripped the cover off an 8-gig drive, wrapped it in electrical tape, padded one side, and placed it in the port cover and jammed it in. Works perfectly. I'm proud of that. My device had 16 gig ssd drive, so now I have a useable storage (8 gig more).
The screen res is ok. It's enough for what the computer is designed for. With the stock battery, it lasts pretty long. I like that.
The netbook uses about 350 mb of memory at any given time (maybe with internet explorer open). I was thinking a memory upgrade might be good, and read that xp will recognize up to 1.99 GB of RAM, but I don't know if that will improve the performance (faster web-page processing).
To round out the netbook system - I installed a network printer and network HD. Now my wife can sit on the couch, hit print, and whatever she printed will pop out on the office printer. Also, I wasn't going to buy the Netbook because the HD was so small, and I knew she wanted to store photos. Somebody told me about a network HD (I guess it's like a lite-server). So, I have a dual-drive network HD, with a mapped drive on my laptop and her netbook. Works great. Anyhow, I hope this helps.
My question - would there be any noticeable difference in performance using a 2-gig RAM instead of 1-gig? It's certainly cheap to upgrade, but why do it if no performance improvement.

regarding memory size: the two things that will speed up the unit, like for all computers, is RAM and CPU/processor. So in this case, i dont think you have other options than to stick with the 1.6ghz proc. so the next step would be to upgrade the RAM.
additionally, you can tweak the hell out of the windows installation and try to get it running with as few services started as possible. this decreases memory usage and boot time because the computer is not starting a whole bunch of services at once. -
Didn't HP Say it would release a 6 cell in January?
My 1000H is awesome (320GB, 2GB Ram) but its loud, and fat and I would like an alternative netbook for the go.
.3 mp camera? I'm sure this can be modded somehow.
If I can get a 6 cell with 1.3mp camera, and increase the hd to around 160gb, this would be perfect.
Does it actually have a bad resolution? -
I just got my mini 1000 today 16g ssd 10.2 screen BT 1g mem, i am happy with it small light great keyboard and no bloatware from HP to getrid of!!! I will probably upgrade to 2 gig memory down the line, but the first thing i am going to buy is the mobile edge netbook sleeve for 10" mini's. The mouse pad is a little small will take some getting used to but overall its a keeper for me. Will also get the 6cell battery when it comes out.
-
I used my mini on batt only last night and it went for 2 hrs/52 mins. I stepped away from it for about 15 mins. I think it went into sleep mode. I haven't changed any of the power settings so I could be wrong. I did modest web browsing(gmail, bbc, notebookreview, youtube) and had the screen at its brightest setting. I can just imagine what a 6 cell batt would do.

Does anyone know if the HP Mini 1000 is available in Hong Kong? If so, does it have an english Windows XP pre-installed or a Chinese one? I always go to Hongkong during xmas time and kinda remember that the laptops that ive seen before had chinese windows (although i didnt buy a laptop, i just saw them displayed in shops). Now that im interested to buy an HP mini 1000, I'd sure want to get an english Windows XP.

^ might as well go to the factory and pick one up by hand right off the assembly line. ;-D
-
oh. so it's sure that it is available in hong kong? and also using english windows xp?
-
I'm looking to get one now, but what would you guys choose. 16GB SSD or 60GB HDD? Any opinions?
-
I would go with 60gb option since i saw some lag issues reported with the SSD. You will not be unhappy with the upgrade.
-
I picked up my mini 1000 (1035NR to be exact) through the HP website A couple of weeks ago. I went for the 60gb HDD and couldn't be happier. well, maybe a little. I love the keyboard but have had issues with my space bar. It only works if I strike the center of the bar and even then only if i hit it fairly hard. anyone else run into this? I wrote to HP support to see what they have to say.
-
Try to get it replaced. The space bar on mine is fine, knock on woood, although it's a 1033CL which I bought from Costco just recently. Good luck.

i want to know which is better this laptop or the new hp mini 1000
thanksLast edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
The new HP Mini-Note 1000 is better.
-
anyone know anything about the january model other than the 6 cell battery?
-
New to this board......but I must say that the hp mini 1000 is definitely a nice netbook. I bought mine from Best Buy for 449.00 two days ago (1030nr).....then i noticed it went on sale yesterday for 399.00.....so i promptly went back for a price match and they gave me 54.00 bucks back in my hand......I actually had to return the first one i bought because I noticed that the 3cell battery developed a noticeable bulge that didn't look too cool. picked up a replacement and so far everything looks good.
I have chosen to upgrade the ram to a 2gb stick.....that will arrive tomorrow. I will let you know how that runs.........from crucial
I also picked up an 8gb jetflash memory stick for the "hp" personal drive directly from transcend for 20.00.....so no need to hack up the slot or another flash drive.
I am looking to upgrade this one day to vista as a goof to see how it runs but I am not sure what exactly the current limitations are.
I understand that Microsoft has limited manufacturers to only including 1 gb of ram for the xp netbooks....but since this is a licensing issue it shouldn't stop stop you the enduser from upgrading. If the older VIA based 2133 was able to run vista business (granted on 60gb HDD or bigger), shouldn't a speedier Intel Atom handle atleast Vista Basic? So.......Is it the SSD capacity that we currently see in the market that keeps vista out all together.....Do we need a 128 or a 64GB SSD before we can attempt vista basic or business?
Is Vista Basic that big?
BTW......HP MINI 1000 handles a Patriot 16GB SDHC Class 4 SD CARD like a champ.
Finally........looking for the service manual for the mini.......links to said .pdf in earlier posts are dead. Does anyone have this file to email?
Thanks -
Yea I'm also wondering if it would run Vista. If the VIA ran it ok, then I'm sure Atom would be much better. Probably, XP drivers from HP website would work in Vista, just as XP drivers did on Acer Aspire One. Let us know when you install it. -

not to take away from this thread but...
roflmao at the $700+ "special edition" hp mini 1000........
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...ategory&v1=Mini&series_name=mini1000vt_series
aside from the color what are the other differences? i dont see any....
they might as well have the netbook sell for $349 and have this red color as a $351 option.....
/ rant -
Well.....as someone else here previously noted.......the 2GB RAM upgrade works very well......with very noticeable improvements. Windows XP recognizes the 1.99GB of RAM without a problem......(to put to bed any rumors that upgrades would be prohibited by the "special version" of the OS....nonsense.)
I will still see minor lag issues with multiple windows open but I am attributing that to the slow SSD. Right now it's not a problem and its about an 80% improvement from the stock 1GB.
My only regret to my upgrade is that the Crucial 2GB stick that they listed as a compatible option for the hp mini 1030nr is actually PC2-5300 (667Mhz CL5) rather than the stock RAM which is PC2-6400 (800MHz CL6)......
I rushed to quickly to upgrade but the double of system memory certainly offsets difference in RAM specs. -
And how is the brightness of the LED? -
There is an increase in heat with the 2GB upgrade......but nothing that says wow.....that's really hot! I am always concerned with heat issues with all of my laptops, so i went out and purchased a heat transfer pad (from Targus). It's a crystal filled pad that turns to gel when heated...and it works quite well. It's small and can be rolled up or folded and thrown in a bag.......
Screen Brightness is very good in my opinion. The glossy finish hasn't yet pissed my off.
Accessories........As I do with all laptops.......I initially love the whole mobile laptop computer functionality and lifestyle.....but then I go and buy a million accessories for that laptop filling the laptop case and I, winding up carrying around a big bag of tricks instead of what was originally engineered to be light and portable.........I guess this is natural but becareful how many accessories you get for this because you will quickly be filling a bag that is made for a 15.4 inch Lap or larger for about the same money as that 15.4 Lappie. The point to this is......enjoy the machine to its fullest but keep in mind its original intended design and target market. "Netbook"
Having said all that, I have all of the accessories that a laptop can have and found that I was carrying them all over......making everything not so portable.
something to think about.
FYI....This is what I have installed and running well on the HP Mini 1030nr.
Open Office.org 3.0
Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
Apple Safari + Quicktime
SlingBox Player 2.0
Nero Essentials (for use with external DVD burner)
Power DVD (for use with external DVD burner)
MSN Live Messenger
Sony eBook Library Software (for use with Digital Book)
Toshiba Bluetooth Software for use with Kensington Micro USB Blutooth Adapter (a must for any mini owner without BT)
I have this pretty much installed and I still have about 8GB left on C:
In all I am quite pleased with this little netbook. -
I don't plan on doing ANYTHING with this netbook other than use Firefox for surfing the web with maybe....5 tabs open? Do you think the 1 gig would be sufficient? I'm thinking it should be? -
I was at the Best Buy, couple days ago and they had 16GB ssd model there. When I checked the disk, it said 9.xxGB free. So are all the programs that you installed amount to only about 1.5GB or close? Also when you got yours, how much was free space? -
I think out of the box there is about 9GB of free space........I quickly uninstalled works and someother things.............there really isn't any bloatware obviously due to size. With all of my programs installed, i have about 8.6GB free..............another key.......make sure that system restore is set to off (it should be by default) and system hibernation i turned off as well.
(it used almost a gig of space by itself.
Again.....the 2 GB RAM was so far well worth the investment of 27.00 bucks or so.....Highly recommend it. The stock 1GB was sluggish for me with out of the box programs installed. -
Installed Vista Home Premium last night......appears to work well and a bit more responsive than windows xp.......I am currently hunting down some updated drivers but initial review looks very good..........barebones vista installation takes up about 7.5 GB of the 16GB SSD......about the same as the ULCPC edition of xp.....
IMPORTANT.....disable hibernation and system restore of c: drive
More to come....... -
-
Any new on Vista?
-
Well......Heres the good news.
Vista Home Premium runs nice and very responsive. I was able to install the xp drivers for the intel GMA950....The other drivers were OS specific but Vista installed basic drivers......updated drivers in the future would be nice not entirely neccessary. Worked beautifully with my additional Transcend JetFlash 8GB card that I replaced. Really love the boot time.
The Bad News......
Unless you have the 60GB HDD version of the mini, don't bother installing Vista Home Premium. My initial install with basic drivers and the software i mentioned in an earlier post left me with 6.5 GB of free space....not bad.
I also disabled hibernation and system restore to maximize disk space. After several microsoft updates (not including SP1 since i was using an OEM vista install disk).....I now have 1.45GB of free space......a little too tight for my preference even though I can install programs on other flash cards and such.
Now if you upgrade to a 32GB or 64GB SSD this problem goes away but at what cost?......The 60GB HDD is probably the best solution if you need Vista.
Preferably, you should look for bluetooth internal because of the lack of USB ports (2) which get eaten up fast. I currently use a micro USB bluetooth adabpter for a BT mouse and for tethering a shared internet connection from a windows mobile phone. Internal Bluetooth on the mini is a huge plus if you can get it.
I have not given up entirely on the vista install, just might look at vista business or basic.....but its the updates that bloat it. -
has anyone made any SSD upgrades yet?
-
-
I didn't actually have that problem because I stopped looking for vista drivers when I was creeping on 13.8GB of the SSD.....and only only 1.5GB left free.
I used an OEM Vista Home Prem disk prior to SP1 so its an adventure anyway.....I did have some difficulty locating vista specific drivers but the OS installed generics to cover it.
I got my hands on the Mini 1033CL today and quickly made a HDD image of the factory os (to avoid the strenous reinstall).
I then installed OEM Vista Home Prem. on this machine.
the 1033CL has the 60GB 4200RPM HDD.....with plenty of room for vista.
Off the bat, SSD vs. HDD in Windows XP.............HDD Wins....faster more responsive (i have no benchmarks to prove this but this what I see)
SSD vs HDD in Windows Vista...........Tie ~!!!
SSD boots vista faster loads apps and starts processes faster than HDD Obviously quicker access time to data.......Use of additional USB based drive on side of machine. The SSD falls short in capacity with only 16GB (15.2 formatted)........it appears that the 16GB SSDs are just not cut out for the current OS releases......a faster 32GB SSD would suffice and obviously 64GB SSD will just kick a HDDs !
I could not justify the $249.00 32GB 1.8" SSD by MTron for the 1030NR.
I am leaning on keeping the 1033CL with the 60GB HDD
I like where we're going with SSD technology but its just not quite up to speed yet for Windows Based Systems........Linux Users......Have at it!
Microsoft must be a little scared that the low capacity SSD netbooks with Linux might bite away at their share. -
The HP Mini 1000 with the SSD option performs horribly, just horribly.
-
Stop making excuses for this piece of sh*t. Between the chincy webcam, the cheapskate 3 cell battery, and the cheap stuttering SSD, it's amazing how people are choosing to ignore how bad this thing is. -
bill -
OK HERE IT IS!!!!! (before i forget...HP mini 1030NR)
I am a Computer Administer for the Public School System of Louisville KY....
I just installed Vista Business...that I ran through VLite.....
It is a slipstream software that allows you to remove the basic bloatware that is in VISTA out of the box.....
http://www.vlite.net
Ok so it took me about an hour to walk through the steps of removeing all of Vista's crap...then about an other 30 mins to install...
the only upgrade i've done to the mini is it now has 2gb of mem....
the 16gig hd still has 9.7gigs free and the only 2 drivers it is missing is the wireless and hardware nics......
I will around over the net and find them now....once it is working all i need to put on there is word, excel pp and it should be good...I have a stripper for MS Office 03 and 07 that will remove all the bloatware from it too......
BTW I have been looking for the expansian usb card. I have found the 8gb upgrade http://ec.transcendusa.com/product/ItemDetail.asp?ItemID=TS8GJFT3K but i'm looking for a 16gb upgrade....anyone found one yet??????? -
It would have been nice to see a 2.5 SATA drive instead of 1.8 PATA @4200. Anyone upgraded their 60GB drive to something bigger and faster yet?
-
JWBarham........
Just remember to disable automatic updates, hibernation, and system restore functions or you will quickly find your free space spent....
see my earlier post about Vista on the 1030NR. -
You should not regret it. Actually PC2-5300 is OVER SPEC for the mini 1000 series. The stock memory is PC2-6400 I think because HP had it in its stock available, and that's it.
You should not gain any additional performance in using faster memory since the mini itself will not handle it and the faster memory will be used as fast as the mini can drive it.
Check the URL below:
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01631228.pdf
As you can see, HP's own spec for the memory to run in the MINI is PC2-4200 (533 MHz).
Memory One customer-accessible/upgradable memory
module slot
Supports up to 1 GB of system memory
PC2-4200, 533-MHz, DDR2
Supports the following configurations:
● 512-MB total system memory (512 × 1)
● 1024-MB total system memory (1024 × 1)
● 2048-MB total system memory (2048 × 1)
Another thing you should not worry about is the possible extra heat... If the module is listed as supported in HP's own technical manual, then the extra heat should have been taken into account in the device's design.

Mini officially supports up to 2 gb but in the hp support center it says UP TO 4gb!

anyone get upgraded drives? -
The official HP spec manual states 2GB as max supported memory. Also, to actually use 4GB one needs a 64 bit OS.
The spec manual can be found here:

Hi -
I picked one of these up for my wife for a Christmas present. I was wondering if anyone knows if the MIE HP software will be available to install once it is available. I read that it was going to be an option instead of XP but I would like to have the option of using either.
Thanks - -
i plan for saving up for this laptop, and buying it by summer (unless if hp comes out with a less expensive laptop/netbook like this i will buy that) so i was woundering the demensions of the netbook when it is closed (width, length, and height) also about how expensive the following specs are, 10.2" screen, 60gb hdd id like to buy from bestbuy or hp site.
-
does anyone have any idea oh how this Mi os works? is it a Os meant to only run Internet, select forms of media, music, pictures and nothen more?
Or can you install, word, divx, windows media classic, world of warcraft with out any issues? -
this was on the hp site, in the specs tab under "mini" series
Operating system :
Genuine Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3
