Has anyone tried HD Flash content on the 311 mini using the new 10.1 flash beta? I want one so bad, but I must know that it can handle now 720P and even 1080P Flash based video content.

Ok, I installed it earlier this afternoon and found some time to try it out.

If you give it time to download the video, it stutters a lot less. But it is still VERY watchable.

Videos I couldn't watch before would play so much better.

I'm trying out Vimeo HD videos and I don't know if it was playable before but I can play it now for sure.
lol, a funny note, I find that it's kinda choppy watching it windowed but if I put full screen it's perfectly smooth.

I think it depends on the web players as well. Vimeo seems to load much faster after decoding...i think. So i find it to be the best player. I tried some Youtube HD videos and there was a some stutter in fullscreen but it was smooth overall.

I tried to watch Revision3's videos and it wouldn't load that well in HD and there was problems, but the 311 can now play High quality videos from the site.

I can't really tell what was truly HD web content. I tried out a Transformers 2 trailer that said it was 1080p before the conversion upload to youtube and it played Soooo well.

    Anyway, it's a very welcome update :D

    XD thanks Adobe!

    Hi Guys.

I see the excitement about the new flash is high...

But anyone tried to install acrsoft total media bundled with the mini 311 @ C:/SWsetup/ATMT/ArcSoftTotalMedia.exe?

I ordered my hp mini 311 from Costco last week. Just checked the tracking, it comes from Shanghai, China. Just wondering where did you guys get yours?

I got mine from Newegg - ordered and then delivered next day - they shipped a lot faster than I expected and it actually came from a local warehouse location

So far my only problem with the mini 311 is the hp mouse pad. It's not very responsive to my finger movements. Do you guys have similar problems?

I'm very impressed by the ion and flash 10.1 combo. I also have an acer aspire one 751h netbook with flash 10.1 installed. I tried to stream the same HD video on youtube. Mini 311 played it flawlessly in full screen, the video on acer is not watchable in window.

Can anyone get the media center remote to work with the 311?
I did the fresh install of W7 (did not back any of the hp folders up from the XP version... ooops?)... so actually my other question is.. do I need any of those files and if so, could someone upload them?
I had been reading about arcsoft home theater software being in that folder??
    thanks!!

1st impressions....quite impressed. Size is very convenient, I find the keyboard comfortable. The trackpad is way too sensitive and I had to disable tap functions just to use it.

I think these 11.6" screens are really the sweet spot for screen resolution, I find it very comfortable for viewing and light work. I don't like dim screens in battery mode, so my battery life is about 4 hours.

It's definitely not as fast as my Core 2 duo, but hey...its a netbook. I'm using a logitech nano wireless mouse which works great other than it prevents the computer from re-booting or starting if left plugged in during re-start. I still have to iron that out.

The external DVD drive works well, allthough it adds weight to the package. If going to the office, I will probably leave it at home.

This is my first time using windows 7 and its defintely much more friendly than vista, with limited pop ups. I haven't tried out any HD quality movies yet, but regular AVI's look pretty smooth.

I'm definitely looking forward to the new version of flash, and I intend to try out Warcraft III on here one of these days. Still a work in progress...

Are there any other HP Mini owners out there having difficulties obtaining the resource/recovery discs from Hewlett Packard? I have been trying for almost 2 months... no luck, so far.

Don't you need to pay extra for the recovery disc? On my mini 311, there is a HD partition labeled as RECOVERY.

You can purchase them from HP - with shipping it comes out to around $13
They send them out next day ( I ordered a set and got them in a few days ).

You can also create your own with a dvd burner or use the recovery partition.

Thanks for the replies regarding the discs...

I ordered my discs on Oct. 2... the expected delivery date of Oct. 13 came and went. After wasting my time attempting to contact HP support via phone to solve the problem I did get a reply by way of e-mail mid November. They admit I have a legal right to request and receive the discs however they continue to say only that "they are on back order with no date known for availability".

According to the customer service order I printed from the HP web site when I made my order there is no charge for the resource/recovery discs.

This thing runs like awesome using Google Chrome browser, the Adobe Flash 10.1 beta and NVIDIA's new beta ION driver. I didn't really regret my purchase, but I was king of let down after a week or two of testing it out. I got used to it's shortcomings but Chrome, Flash 10.1, NVIDIA drivers make me satisfied. Chrome is the first browser I have ever used that is faster than IE. I do not know how they did it but it has been done.

p.s.- The new Flash and NVIDIA drivers do speed up IE on Flash laden pages such as Gamespot, AOL.com, or professional sports pages... but Chrome makes them load like my old Core 2 Duo 17" laptop(so big to me now cause of 311 that it is as if I have a TV on my lap when I used it once since I got my 311).

I installed UT2k3 on my mini and it's almost playable, I need to see if I can jimmy the settings a little and get it into the land of the living.

Has anyone had any luck with flash 10.1 beta and hulu yet?

Still seems like choppyville to me.

I've searched this thread and I can't find any references to microphone problems using XP. I did a clean install of XP Pro SP3 (after slipstreaming Nvidia drivers) and everything works very well (I really like the Zune theme for XP!) except the microphone. All I get is static - I've un-installed and re-installed the drivers - no luck. Does anyone have any experience with this? TIA ...

Have not found a single store that would ship this netbook to finland. And apparently the computer is not even going to be sold in finland.
Yes i have tried google but im not finding anything good.

Im just wondering if i can upgrade more memory as the site im buy from says it's 1giga max and the official page, here, also says that 1 giga is max even if iv read that many people upgraded it to 3gigas. Does it differ from the USA version or?

I was reading Compaq Mini 311/HP Mini 311 Service and maintenance manual and there should be one memory slot(DDR3). Maximum memory is 3072MB.

I think there's 1 gig on board and there's only one memory slot. So for people who ordered with 2 gig of ram but want to upgrade to 3 gig. They have to take out that 1 gig of ram and replace with a 2 gig stick.

Great little netbook. Here's my wishlist (hoping some of these can are easily done)...

    1) Keyboard slippery - The keypad is way slippery. Anyone have any tips on this? I'm thinking it needs to be scuffed up a bit. Perhaps an overlay of soft silicon similar to what's available for phones?

    2) Cursor Jump - I keep inadvertantly hitting the touchpad while typing, which makes my cursor jump up a few inches from where I'm typing. I do this constantly it seems, no matter how careful I am.

best fix for this would be if the touchpad would auto lock while keys are being pressed (at least for a few seconds, then auto unluck)

    3) Function Key Page Up & Page Down - I dislike having to hold the function key for PU/PD, especially since it requires two handed operation. Anyone know a shortcut on the right side of the keypad that allows you to engage PU/PD?
ALTERNATELY, can I remap the directional arrows so that up/down require function key and the default up/down is PAGE UP & PAGE DOWN.

    4) Battery Life Remaining in hours - I can only see percentage left. Want to see actual estimated time remaining.

    5) Touchpad too slippery - Same as keypad. Perhaps an iphone screen protector can be applied to give it some needed friction? Anyone tried this?

    6) That huge HP sticker to the left of the touchpad - I want to remove it, but I'm afraid it will leave a sticky footprint, its so large. Anyone removed this yet? Does it leave a sticky spot?

    7) Harware Acceleration / Enabling Ion Full - Is there a step by step guide for enabling full hardware acceleration? I've downloaded the flash 10.1 update which has GPU acceleration support, but I'm not sure I'm getting the benefit. Any way to tell for sure?

    8) Upgrading RAM - Mine came with 2GB onboard (Win7). Am I limited to 3GB total? If so, any links to good source for a 1GB stick for this netbook?

If you want to have 3gig of ram, and now you have 2gig. You need to buy a 2gig stick because there's only 1 gig on board and 1 slot. So basically you will be wasting your 1 gig stick.

Ouch! Wish I had known that sooner. I would have ordered it that way to begin with. Anyone allow trade-in ram?

Also, I downloaded the latest alps driver (7.5.303.105) to get the touchpad lock effect while typing, but when I went to install it, I got a message telling me that the version I have (7.5.1711.118) already is newer than the one I was installing. How can that be?

I'm thinking about picking this up to replace my aging and very noisy 3-year-old HP dv9230. For my next computer, my only requirement is that whatever I get is not slower than what I currently have. Here are my laptop's specs:

    Intel Core 2 CPU - T5500 @ 1.66GHz (Centrino Duo)
    NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600

Would the 311 be a downgrade in terms of CPU and/or graphics?

The CPU will be a downgrade whilst the GPU is an upgrade.

That said however, your DV9230 is the more well-rounded, superior machine, but the 311 will be more portable.

I have received the ram sodimm from a macbook PC3-8500S and the mini won't boot at all. The caps lock key led is blinking and system won't post. Darn, I thought this memory would work. Any last suggestions here?

The sticker on the ram module has the number HMT112S6BFR6C-G7, typing it in google reveals this site:
    http://www.hynix.com/datasheet/eng/...p?menu1=01&menu2=01&menu3=01&menuNo=1&m=1&s=1

    Judging by the data sheet:

    HMT112S6BFR6C x64 1.5V 8K Ref./64ms G7/H9 x8 Mass production

The speed is G7, which corresponds to
    G7 : DDR3-1066 7-7-7

I've got the 311-1000CA model with the N270

I guess I would need PC-10600 or PC-10660 (whatever the difference is) running at 1333, can anyone confirm?

    I'm running (Kingston 2GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1333 Laptop Memory Model KVR1333D3S9/2G), that I got from Newegg.com, at standard settings with no issues.
