i assume windows xp sp3 is on a separate partition, so it should be possible to burn it to CD or DVD, repartition, and reinstall? ughh ... late october seems so long to wait for the acer ferrari one / amd congo benchmarks ...

There is no other partition on this system. Just the main one. I am assuming that you will have to call HP to purchase a recovery flash drive like the mini 110 -

Are there any codecs powered by GPU? I remember trying to watch some anime on the display netbooks at the store and the audio was lagging behind the video.
-
nice ... is that with 1 gb or 3 gb ram? btw, how do you know that the 1 gb is soldered on vs. hidden underneath the keyboard?
-

Just the 1gb.
hmmm.... never thought about under the keyboard. It looks like a real pain in the to check on that so ill look into that later. -
Been watching this thread since I really want this netbook, but I have to sell my current one first to justify the purchase
However, thought I'd share this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227493
1GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066
$0.99 after rebate
-
nice price if you want to try to dual channel...but Im gonna go with a 2 GB stick
so anyone test the dimm slot? -
I popped in a 2GB stick last night and the OS and BIOS wouldn't pick up on it. It's a Crucial 2GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1066 stick.
Also can anybody tell me what the wireless card drivers are? In my haste I installed Windows 7 without jotting down the drivers first. -
I ordered two modules for overnight shipping. I should have them tomorrow and will be able to test 1GB versus 2GB. That will tell us if the dual channel will actually do anything. I can take one for the team.
For what its worth, I ordered 1333Mhz modules, I don't want to take a chance that the 1066Mhz modules will not work. I have a hunch they are down clocked to DDR2 speeds anyway, and perhaps were only picked for their power saving features, not bandwidth. Speculation though.
Could not install SSD. Windows XP cannot find it. BIOS does not have an option to emulate IDE mode. So it looks like I am dead in the water until Windows 7, or HP releases a driver that I can slimstream into the XP3 setup. I am rather bummed about it... I'll keep chipping away at this though. I have some other ideas that I can do to get around it, it just takes time and lots of it.
Edit ** To the post above mine - I am glad I went with 1333Mhz memory. Thanks for the informative post. -
I have the 1000 and have been looking at the 311 to upgrade. Plan to install a SSD mainly because this gets bounced around on the bus and subway but hoping to get better boot time too.
I've only seen one review, they're saying over 5 hours with wifi on and constant browsing. Comparing to my 1000 with a smaller screen, SSD and 6 cell battery, I'm not getting that now. Battery life while on wifi is important to me so I'd appreciate any user comments as to what you're seeing. Thanks. -
so one instance of a dead DIMM...any others?
-
so that's all I am to you?! a satistic?!
haha hopefully this ram issue gets resolved
anybody have the wifi driver? much appreciated -
Whew, I would have done the same thing but luckily mine hasn't come yet. I guess we may be waiting till around Oct 22 for the Win7 wireless drivers.
-
I'm willing to try to use XP drivers to see if that works. Right now anything goes for a temporary fix.
-
Did you do an upgrade or fresh install?
-
On the back of the panel it says "Replace with HP Part #" which implies that the DIMM slot is active. But... If not, it gets returned I guess.
-
Fresh install. Couldn't manage to get the system to accept an upgrade. I think it had an XP image mounted somewhere which conflicted with 7 trying to upgrade
-
Tried this ram in the system, works fine.

Trying to track down the SATA Driver so I can do a clean install! -
Interesting - that's the exact same RAM I bought. Did you go into BIOS for the RAM to be recognized? I may have gotten a bad stick if that's the case.
edit:
Also does that mean your system recognizes 3GB of memory? -
N270 or N280? If you have an N280 and that memory worked, then it is proof that the memory is running 1066 or less...
-
Anyone who has one, feel free to post 3D benchmarks
-
So do you guys think the n270 is fixed at 1gb and the n280 can be upgraded.. im gonna be pissed if thats the case.
-
I seriously hope not, unless HP tricked everyone.

Both say the RAM is upgradeable to 3GB. I'm hoping to get the HP Mini from a retail store or Costco. -
Nope, I don't think that. What I am referring to is the ram speed. The N270 runs at a different bus speed than the N280. This means that if the memory multiplier settings are the same, the ram speed should be different for each of these two models.
533 bus with 1:2 ratio would be 1066Mhz memory.
666 bus with 1:2 ratio would be 1333Mhz memory.
But, the ratios actually go off of the base clock, and I think the base clock of the bus is 133 and 166 respectively. It can get confusing. If were using whole numbers on our rations, then the N280 either runs at 666Mhz or 1333Mhz. But, the memory does not have to me ran with even ratios. They could be 4:5 or 3:5 for example. -
So we the N270 crowd should be straight getting a ddr3 1066 2gb. Just that poor guy who tried it his just is bad. i want to order it so i get it when my mini gets here. im using it for WOW and class/slingbox lol. So i just hope i get better wow frame rates than 36 but that was with only 1gb ram so should be ok with 3 gb.
-
Full 3GB recognized in BIOS.
Using the n280.
On an unrelated note, Does anyone know where I could find the SATA driver for this thing?
I installed a larger hard disk and want to get it up and running. Thanks.
Edit: Found!
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_winxp_15.46_ion.html -
now im regreting getting the n270, when i bought the n10j everyone was sayin how the n270 was better because it is overclockable, but the n280 wasnt. now i ordered the mini with the n270 and everyone got the n280... lol now im distrought
-
Guys I had a question about it.... How is the audio and speakers compared to Acer model of netbooks also how is the screen quality? and if anyone has everest from lavalys please run that and goto display and tell us the lcd panel model and manufacturer please! Thank you!
-
you should be able to overclock either depending on how HP has the cpu set up and how the bios deals with it and what PLL it runs off of!
-
No worries I got the n270 as well and apparently a DOA 2gb stick of ram.
Can anybody tell me what the WLAN device is in the 311? I'm still missing wifi
-
God bless you.
I was fighting with that last nigth for about 5 hours before I gave up. If this works, let me know. I will try and get my SSD up and running tonight.
-
Don't be - The practical difference is probably going to be 2-3% performance difference. Nothing to lose sleep over, seriously.
-
I didn't think SetFSB even worked on any nVidia chipsets... I only seen VIA, SIS, ALI and INTEL chipsets.
-
Hey guys, I'm also interested in buying a mini 311. So with the n270 atom processor can we be safe to assume that a 2gb DDR3-1066 wont work in this model?
Thanks -
i had it on the n10j and wasnt that nvidia chipset.
-
could someone do some testing in wow/aion/wc3(dota)? =D
also, im interested in seeing that dual channel ram result
this hp mini looks really interesting, might return this laptop i just bought if things look good -
I will be testing wow, and not genericly like the laptopmag one where they ran threw elwyn forest. i mean my phone can do 36 fps there. I will do dalaran, pvp and raids
-
awesome, what other things are u gona be testing?
-
Awesome, can't wait! I have big hopes for WOW on this little thing. When do you think you'll post something?
p.s. what kind of phone do you have?? lol -
no its not. Could have just been a bad dimm.
-
No, it was not. It was the Intel 945GSE chipset with dedicated 9300M GPU.
-
I plan on testing dual channel versus single channel tomorrow night. I'll probably just do a repeatable test like 3DMark06 for that test.
-
awesome!, btw ive never had an intel atom before and i was wondering is it very responsive? like managing a few windows open and the load time of apps?
-
So far one person has confirm that, you can add 2gig ddr3 stick and it works fine. Any more people that can confirm it too?
I'll be looking forward for the results, because i still haven't ordered mine... -
I was planing on running wow at medium settings then trying Dalaran, a few pvp zone WSG, IoC and Naxx, Uld, ToC. I also will run NFS:S, Burnout Paradise. Any other sugestions on WOW let me know.
-
Anyone with a n270 confirm ram 2,3gb
-
went to microcenter during lunch, bought a 2 GB DDR3 1066 Patriot for $40 after rebate(expensive), they didn't have an 1333 modules in stock.
Put it in, BIOS sees it. Using N280 -
good deal man so we got a few confirms on the n280 idk why it would make a diff n270... i hope not.
-
I really wish they had an option for the 2ghz atom that sony just announced in their new line up
HP Mini 311 on sale!
