Just picked up an Omen 17 (1TB +128SSD) 1060 with 12GB RAM. Absolutely loving it.
I'm having problems finding a backpack for it and was wondering in anyone has found something that fits it? I dont really want a handbag style.
Cheers.

Hey Guys!
Had a couple of questions. I recently purchased the 15" with i7 and 1050ti. It's the one you can usually find at Bestbuy. See here.
1. I've noticed some microstuttering in some games (Elite Dangerous). Is this because I'm running my library from the mechanical harddrive? Previously, I was using a desktop with an SSD and thought this difference might be causing this.
2. My cpu temps are high (~94C) when playing any game that uses the Frostbite Engine (ME:Andromeda, BF1, Battlefront II) causing considerable fan noise. Is it generally accepted that you need to do a re-paste out of the box for a quieter computer? Undervolting and lowering the power profile helps a little with Andromeda. Are there any good guides specifically for re-pasting the Omen models?
Thanks! -
i do get some microstutters in bf1 but that's it but i have the rx580 .but 94c is high i have never gone past 90c in Andromeda after hours of playing . i do plan tp repast it some day

The I7 7700HQ is a hot chip. It normally runs at mid 90's if insufficiently cooled. Most HP Omen have insufficient cooling I have found out. I sent my laptop in to assessed as it's overheating and freezing. Slow boots as well so will see what the technicians say? I have the earlier model that looks like the pavilions. The newer models do have improved cooling though. I now have to wait and see.

i hope all works out for you .let us know what happens .

How is hp omen ce-073tx?
(1060, 120hz, 7300hq)? -
I have not come across a omen with the i5 but I would think with a i5 and a 1060 it should be a good gaming pc .I would look for one with the i7-7700hq and the 1060 or 580 but that's me . good luck !

Here it is, it's on the hp India's site and itsi support site too.(any assumptions about temps and throttling?)

Hello all,
I'd like to ask what your idle temps are. My setup is i5-7300 + 1060/120hz panel on a 15" Omen and I'm currently getting what seem to me crazy high idle temps. I'm including my HWM screenshot below but GPU is at 55 while browsing and the CPU is mid 60s. This is with fans set to always on in bios!
I'd also like to ask if anyone dealt with any stripped screws inside of their laptop. I can't repast mine because it came with a screw that was very much stripped and when I tried to get it out I managed to destroy it even more

@FireLantern what were your temps at 100% load or at stress tests, any thermal throttling?
-
I'll run some stress tests over the weekend when I have time to verify that there is no throttling but I've had the computer for 2 months now and I don't think I noticed any throttling.Gursimran82956 likes this. -

All have same config.(dell, msi ssd 256 gb) -
I have a 2017 Pavilion 15t. It has the same internal design as this model Omen.
http://www.myfixguide.com/manual/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/HP-Omen-15-ax000-Disassembly-5.jpg
Recently, due to summer weather, I removed the original thermal paste and replaced it with Arctic MX-4.
GPU temperatures decreased 2-3C which is what I expected.
But CPU temperature decreased by approximately 4-5C which surprised me.
Before the re-paste, cpu temperature was always notice-ably higher than gpu temperature. I just thought this is normal.
But after the re-paste, cpu and gpu temperature are now more near each other (although it depends on cpu/gpu usage).
I only used a small "drop" of thermal paste on both cpu and gpu, and I tightened the heatsink screws, very tight.
The original thermal paste was a somewhat thick layer.
By the way, many budget notebooks/laptops are now sold with only one ram stick.
For gaming, it's significantly better to use two ram sticks.

If you sell the original one stick of low performance ram, you can replace it with two sticks of high performance ram.
High performance ram can make a notice-able difference in some games such as Fallout 4.
But if you don't care about gaming, then sure, why not keep the original one stick of ram.Gursimran82956 likes this. -

Omen 17 user here, bought it in november. even with a 100mA undervolt, this thing still shuts itself down due to overheating while playing. Had to resolve to underclocking to 2.3GHz to keep the computer from shutting down (And even then it does so ocassionaly). Turned that off for the sake of this picture and my idle max is that god damn high. What a joke honestly -
wow its shutting off that's bad I would send it back . I have mine all stock and never hit more then 92c and that was after gaming for 3 to 4 hours in one shot .at 90c the second fan spins up but only for like 5 min then would go back to low .the left fan was on full bore . I hope you get that fixed …….what good is a gaming pc you cant game on

Update to my situation: Replaced thermal paste, 2 days of okay temps (no more thermal throttling)
fast forward to today, the battery is dying, the maximum capacity in the diagnostic tool is literally cut apart, only got a maximum of 40% of the total capacity; contacted support and i'm to send it to them to replace it. Really f*cking hating this laptop, most likely going to sell it after I get it back -
Double posting real quick: Could someone do a quick battery diagnostic and take a picture of the results, so that I can compare the battery information? Thanks!

hi all just a update to my omen 17 . I just added a 500gb ssd nvme drive for only $129 so far works very well .only thing is HP don't give you a screw there is a cooling pad that's part of the fan. mine stays around mid 50c

Hey!
I have the Omen 17 rx 580 version and have a couple of questions.
1: Did anyone manage to Hackintosh one of these? Since it has a rx 580, it would make a great match for a hackintosh machine.
This is the only resource I've found, but I feel that the rx580 version would be ideal.
2. I'm on driver version 18.8.1 (the later one that came in August), but in Radeon display driver settings, it says that my display does not display freesync. I clearly remember having it on in the previous driver versions. Any help with that?
Much thanks in advance -
I have had all kindsa probs with 18.8.1 . first install I lost my video card so uninstalled and cleaned all amd drivers .next try more of the same so I gave up …..and you def have freesyncprosetheus likes this. -
Thanks for the response. I thought it might be a driver issue as I upgraded windows to Pro and had some driver issues arise because of it.
The forums for this model are so quiet. Which is weird cause its a fantastic machine at such a low price. I might give hackintosh a whirl if work is light some week.
@tweake628 Hope you're still enjoying yours. How is your experience on the LG Ultrawide monitor? How does this machine push 2k? I'm thinking of an egpu setup... -
let me know how you make out with hackintosh .
I am going to wait for the new update for video drivers to come out and just stay away from 18.8.1 .
I love the ultrawide !!!!! I have only ran in to one game that didn't work straight away and that was a esay fix .the rx580 pushes it like it wasn't any dif then the stock 1920x 1080 no drop in frame rates at all .its hard to go back to normal now I was in the hospital for a week so I had to use the normal laptop screen and it felt all crowded lol . I got a cheap KB and my omen mouse got it set up like a desktop now lolprosetheus likes this. -
trying to find a place to host my pic of my setup …..I am so so rusty lol
-
I bought it because it's one of the cheapest ultra-wide's available.
The height is equivalent to a 23" 1920x1080. Don't buy the 25" ultra-wide. It's not much bigger than your laptop's built-in display.
I overclocked my LG monitor as high as possible: 67Hz.
The difference between 16:9 and 21:9 is huge.
Once you try 21:9, you won't want to go back to 16:9.

@tweake628 I will look into this. I think I might have some free time coming up...but the temptation to simply game during that time is too huge. I wonder if MacOS can be booted through external SSD...I guess I should post that question on the forums there.
@heretofore Much thanks for that feedback. That bit about screen size will save me from a lot of buyers remorse. If I could buy from China, is there any brand you would point out to me? I'm sure they must have a bunch of barebones, debranded stuff. Also, is it possible to get ultrawides with higher refresh rates? I would be happy with 75 hz just for work. Doubt the 580 is going to touch higher framerates. -
i have the 25 and I love it .I do wish I would have gone bigger but really ones you go to 21:9 you cant go back . even when I play ps4 games on my hdtv it feels all cramped lol

Random question here, but what is the fastest memory anyone has managed to get running in one of these?
I've seen one machine with a 7700HQ and 2666 Kingston ImpactX IIRC that actually runs at 2666/CL15, (which is both faster AND lower latency than the stock modules which are 2400/CL17 IIRC) and it made me wonder whether any of the 2800/3000 MHz SODIMMs you occasionally see would 'plug and play'.
Would be kinda awesome if they would; I realise RAM doesn't make a MASSIVE difference, but it probably would help nicely with 1% lows, same as dual channel, and just eeking that last little bits out of these things
The fact our BIOS' are so limiting probably doesn't help.tweake628 likes this. -
The stock ram on my 2017 HP Pavilion was 2400MHz/CL18.
I upgraded to 2 x 4GB 2400MHz/CL14 Kingston HyperX Impact
https://www.kingston.com/en/hyperx/memory/impact
2400MHz is the fastest my laptop will "officially" support.
The main reason I upgraded is because my previous desktop PC had super low latency DDR3,
and there are some games (such as Bethesda games) in which ram latency makes a significant difference in frame rate.
In general, I prefer my PC's to be well optimized, when possible, and that includes high performance ram.
I believe 2800/3000 MHz will only run at that speed if your laptop supports 2800/3000.
Instead of searching for the fastest ram, it's better to find ram with the lowest latency.

Do you know how to change ram timings on HP laptops?
I bet my laptop would run stable at 2400MHZ/CL13 if it were possible to change timings.Last edited: Sep 10, 2018 -
I has wondered this myself .if u do find out plz let me know . good luck

hey omen owners. i got an an012dx and im curious as to whether or not anyone had managed a successful repaste and the results of said repaste. i either want to put i c diamond or try these comprable carbon thermal pads (tested by ltt). i want my thermal integrity back lol.
ive changed the turbo boost max all the way from 45 to like 10 or 15 and im pretty sure i could get gully stable 1080 p ultra MAX settings if this thing didnt run at a million degrees on a regular day.
results? thoughts?
tangent.

This is how I lowered temperature (from most effective to least effective):
(1) cpu undervolt
(2) gpu undervolt
(3) change thermal paste (I prefer Arctic mx-4 because longevity and it's cheap and easy/safe)
If your laptop has large intake air vent holes, then consider a laptop cooler.
My Pavilion laptop has tiny air intake vent holes, and sadly, there was no temperature change with a laptop cooler.
Be sure not to block/restrict the air intake vents and exhaust vents.Last edited: Sep 23, 2018 -

intel cpu after 4th generation (haswell) will throttle when in power saving mode or whenever it s not plugged in. this incluses kaby lake
ALSO TRY UNDERVOLT BY -110.
this will stablize the frequency of your processor at or above 3.0 without having to make a sacrifice of temprature.Last edited: Oct 26, 2018 -

Easiest would be to grab a sharp flat head screwdriver and tap a new groove with the help of a hammer.
But that may be too fragile for that. Try first to clean the area with alcohol and place a flat elastic band on the screw. Then use a philips over it. The rubber helps it grab.
Last resort, get a thin dremel disk and sand a new groove into the screw head. Careful not to go thru it.
And try to cover everything else with paper and tape to make sure no metal shards get anywhere near the motherboard. -
Hello guys:
I recently purchased an HP Omen 17t with i7 8750h GTX 1060 128GB NVMe SSD/1TB HDD and 144hz 1080p display. I ordered a 512GB M.2 SSD to upgrade from the 128GB version and I wanted to know the best method to go about reinstalling Windows on a new drive.
The Omen does not come with Windows installation media, however I did see that there was a recovery drive already on the computer. I didn't want to clone the drive because I feel like a number of issues from my previous laptop came with cloning my drives. I do have a USB for Windows 10 installation but it was made about a year or so ago and wouldn't have the drivers/software specific to the Omen.
Essentially, what would be the best way of reinstalling Windows onto a new NVMe SSD for this laptop?Last edited: Oct 24, 2018 -
depending on what brand you bought, it may have come with a free/included version of acronis or some other migration software.
samsung,
PNY,
western digital
these all come with either in house software or a digital copy of acronis.
assuming you got a samsung or one of the ones i mentioned here you simply,
1. install your new nvme into the m.2 slot. DO NOT REMOVE THE GUMMY THERMAL PAD!!!! this is for cooling your drive.
2. boot the computer to windows.
3. aquire your free copy of migration software.
4.in windows, use disk management to initialize the new m.2 drive (some migration software will not see the nvme before you initialize/format the drive)
5. install and complete the process for mirroring/cloning your drive.
6. the computer will restart and finnish the clone and either shut down or prompt to shut down. do this.
7. before turning on the pc again. remove the old(source) drive with its connectors unless you have somethething to replace it with.
8. have a drink, tip your hat.
welcome to the omen cool kids club by the way. -

1: the OS is installed on the SSD. How would I boot into Windows if the SSD with the OS isn’t on the new SSD.
2. The SSD that I purchased was none of the above. It was this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075Y23Y37/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
