UPDATE: Well all I had to do was create a Recovery USB Drive and once I installed the new SSD the Recovery USB did a clean install of Windows on the new SSD. I didn't have anything downloaded since The SSD came in 2 days after the Omen 17t. So I guess I'm all set :D

I'm back! Been gone a while but I recently picked up an Omen 17 refurb unit so I'm back on the high end PC gaming train. I got a steal on one off newegg - 1050$ for a 17" with the GTX 1070.

Might not do much too it though. Seems pretty solid right now and once I finish setting up driers and installing programs I hope the little hiccups get worked out. But if not, I guess I'm back on the site to fix them :)

    Hey all

Got a question about memory that I haven't been able to get a definitive answer on via google. So, I've been looking into doubling my Omen's memory. I currently have 16GB 2x8 kingston at 2666. I was wondering if I bought some corsair or micron 32gb kits they would run at 2400 or 2666. I know our bios doesn't have the xmp profile but if its already running at 2666 will new sticks run at their max speed or dial down to 2400?

    Thanks all

Hey folks, thanks for all the info. Looking to purchase one of the i7 8750h Omen 15's, and possibly a 17 if the 15 is good :)
Would love to hear updated reports from users about thermals, noise, etc of the 2018 models.

Question- should I get the 1060 or 1070 Max Q version? In Australia HP sells two versions, identical specs except for the graphics card. Price is $285 different on sale, about 200 US.

Since the 1060 is a non Max Q, I'm wondering if it is desktop level and thus roughly on par with a Max Q 1070, thus making the 1060 a better buy (similar performance vs price difference).

Alternatively, whether the 1060 is a mobile version (although not Max Q), and thus power consumption is much higher for the 1070, giving a tradeoff between higher performance on the 1070 and higher battery life on the 1060 (TDP 115 for the Max Q 1070 vs 80 for 1060 mobile).

    Hello guys!
I ve been thinking to buy the omen 15 for some gaming but for professional graphic design as well. What can you tell me about the screen and its color accuracy/gamut?
    Thanks!

Received my Omen 17t on Monday, didn't get to play around with it too much until today.
Specs: 8750H, 16GB ram, 1TB hdd (going to order an SSD if I feel like this laptop can last a few years), W10 Pro, BT 5.0, GTX1070, 144hz FHD

Had it sleeping with the lid closed and when I opened it today, after about an hour of LIGHT use, was getting some locking up accompanied by black screen and artifacting which would then stop after a few seconds and take me back to what I was doing but with the brightness set at maximum. That happened a few times until it finally locked up completely and black screened. Had to hold the power button to shut it down. Hasn't happened again since.
Temps are typical I guess. Undervolted -110.4mV and right now GPU is at 45-47C and CPU is 53-58C. Ambient temp is about 25.5C. CPU loves to hit about 90C while playing Fortnite. Going to keep tinkering with the voltage and see what happens.

edit: 30 minutes into a game of Fortnite had GPU/69C and CPU/85C with an undervolt of -129.9mV

Artifact issue happened about 2 minutes ago and just now while typing this - temps at 47C and 55C. Sounds like returning this laptop is inevitable.

Happened again a few minutes ago during a game of Fortnite. The whole system black screened, artifacted (or maybe not even artifacts but weird looking nonsense on the screen) and then locked up and required a hard shutdown.

Thanks! It was on sale on newegg but just a heads up that woot.com seems to be offering a bunch of the omen lineup for cheap. Here's a similar one for a similar price. I think it changes based on stock but this isn't the first time that 1100$ gets you a 17" GTX1070 equipped laptop - https://computers.woot.com/offers/h...70-gaming-laptop-17?ref=w_cnt_lnd_cat_pc_2_19

Was thinking of getting an Omen 17 850H Nvidia 1060 laptop but it seems that these Omen are prone to overheating the CPU it seems?

8750h chips run hot.. I don't blame HP for that.. however I heard recent update has fixed the over heating issues.

HP omen owners would be if you can help us.

So I have a question? Is the 2018 omen 17 worth it. Its got that 144hz screen. And its on sale for 1199.99. And its got a 1060. But I've seen some reviews where some people have gotten them and they do work so they have to get a replacement. And I just want to know if its a common problem or just a one off. I know it has some thermal problems. Just wondering if its worth it.

Any laptop you get that isn't extravagently priced can be expected to have a "weak point" where a greater than average number of people have an issue with something. This is less that every laptop is delivered busted and more like a given part fails more often than one would expect. And it's certainly valid to think about. But I'd ask this question - is this laptop the best at what you want to do, for the price you want to spend? If so, then I'd say pull the trigger. Especially if you're buying new. Keep in mind - comparable laptops in that price range will have their own "higher than average" failure rates on a given part too. So you're probably not avoiding the problem, it just happens to a different part.

And a final word - screens are easy to replace on brands like HP and Dell, by and large. So if 2 years down the line yours fails, it's not the end of the world. Inconvenient, yes, but cheaper and easier than other potential failures.

I have just bought an HP Omen 15 CE081NS. It comes with only 8GB of RAM. I want to replace it for a 16GB stick which I have already from another laptop. The problem is that the memory stick I have is 2666MHz and according to HP this laptop supports only until 2400MHz (I guess it's limited by the CPU, according to Intel the i7-7700HQ supports only until 2400MHz). Will I be able to use this memory stick? I don't mind if the motherboard downclocks the memory to 2400MHz, but will the system be stable?

It should work without any problems. Actually you should have 2 memory sockets, if I was you, I would leave 8GB in place and put 16GB on top. That way you have 24 GB total and 16 GB in dual channel, therefore faster.

The laptop just arrived and to my surprise, the 8GB stick is actually 2666MHz, not 2400MHz like in the specs. :)
I have just added the 16GB stick. The BIOS detects 24GB of RAM and it's working at 2666MHz.

Hey. AMD recently put out their annual driver update. On the Omen 17's with the rx 580, anyone running the new drivers and able to maintain the option to detect and enable the freesync option in the display for those with freesync capable displays (which i think all the rx 580 HP Omen 17s have)

    EDIT:

Installed the latest adrenaline drivers, december edition. This was an update from the jun2018 drivers on HP's website as any subsequent drivers would make the freesync option disappear.
Happy to report that everything is working perfect so far.

HP Omen 17 amd rx 580 edition.

Hey guys, I'm going to replace the thermal paste on my omen 17 mid-2017 version (120Hz) cause I have serious overheating issues.
I'd like to get a liquid metal thermal paste for better Temps, but it is not suitable for aluminum heat-sinks due to corrosion. Is this laptop heat-sink in copper or aluminum? Thanks in advance

Is the HP Omen 15 2017 with i5-7300HQ, gtx 1060 6gb, 120hz gsync a good buy these days?

I want a gaming laptop and the HP offers the most features for the money.

The 2017 version is 1300 dollars while the 2018 version with i7, 144hz gsync is 1760 dollars.

The new RTX laptops are mighty expensive.

Did you do the repaste? Personally I find something like the Arctic Cool MX4 or 5 pretty decent for a repaste job. I have a Omen 17 mid/late 2017 as well, and the CPU temps are not as bad as they are on 15 inch laptops. Also, if you have done the repaste, is there anything in particular that one should be careful about while repasting this laptop?

    Hello,

anyone heard about OMEN by HP 15-dh0003nc ?

I'm considering the above vs. OMEN by HP 15-dc1039nc

I cannot find absolutely anything about the first, newer, one.

Tech specs are almost exactly the same - i7-9750H, RTX 2070, 16 GB RAM.

The newer "dh" is thinner by 0.7cm, offers DisplayPort 1.4 over USB-C (vs. DisplayPort 1.2 on the older "dc") and the newer should have Optimus GPU switching, which i cannot confirm for sure.

The older is cheaper by about 100 euro.

Which one would you buy from these two and why?

    Hello fellas,

HP Omen is revamping the Omen laptop chassis and displays this July, with the Omen 15T and Omen 17T gaming laptops.
Much better looking chassis IMHO, improved "Tempest" thermal solution and cooling, and according to this laptopmedia.com review, comes equipped with what looks like the BEST 144Hz IPS like GAMING DISPLAY currently on the market!

It's the ChiMei CMN175D IPS like 144Hz display boasting 1500:1 Contrast ratio, 98% sRGB, 350 nits and most importantly 8.8 ms response times, that is just 1.8 ms over the 7ms required for low ghosting 143 FPS gameplay, so capped at 100 FPS (10ms) should be a bliss. In contrast the LG LGD05C0/LGD05FE G-Sync display on the old Omen 15T and Gigabyte Aero 15x9 or the LG LP156WFG-SPB2 G-Sync display on the Legion Y740 have on average a 14 ms response time, just 2 ms shy of 16 ms required for low ghosting 60 FPS, yet they are 144Hz!

I'm very impressed with this Chi Mei display, I think it has dethroned the 9ms AUOptronics 144hz displays Asus and MSI's 2018/early 2019 premium gaming laptops use, beating them in response time (by just 0.2 to 0.5 ms, but still a win) while providing much better image quality, almost twice the contrast ratio (AUO usually 750:1 to 1200:1 if binned), about 50 more nits (355 vs 300ish) and about 5-7% more sRGB coverage!

I swear if they add G-Synch the Omen 15/17T it will be the best mainstream laptop with that Chi Mei panel, plus excellent power delivery control and boosting/OCing with the Omen Control Center!
I see no mention of Nvidia Optimus in the review, so I think the Chi Mei display is at least directly connected to the GPU, so Fast Sync or Rivatuner Scanline Sync should be available and no 20% iGPU CPU bottleneck performance hit!
Lastly, if the display is directly connected to the dGPU, that increases chances of adding G-Sync certification down the road via Bios update, so crossing fingers!

    Specs say:
Matte IPS display, WLED , Full HD , UWVA, AntiGlare, 144 Hz NVIDIA G-Sync

Seller told me it has Optimus

    I got it today (OMEN by HP 15-dh0003nc = 7GS49EA#BCM = i7-9750H & RTX 2070), my first thoughts / observations:

-The laptop feels quite small (considering it is 15.6 inch)
-No Fingerprint Reader (i knew, but anyway sad)
-No visible Intel GPU, so apparently No Optimus (the strange thing, HP offers Intel HD GPU driver download for this particular laptop - why)
-Unfortunate memory configuration with 2x 8GB DDR4-2666 MT/s sticks with both slots full; two slots only

-HDD LED is on right side of the laptop, not visible from front
-No NumLock LED (CapsLock and Mute and DisableTouchPad keys have LED in them)
-No separate Home & End keys (combined with Page Up / Page Down via FN)

-GPU temperature max 77 oC after running FurMark for 16 minutes (without CPU load, brand new laptop without any dust)
-with only Prime95 running, CPU can stay on max 2.5 GHz with some short throttlings down to 2.1 GHz, temperature stays around 80 oC
-when both FurMark and Prime95 are running, the CPU stays at 1.9 GHz only

    .
Great news if the 2019 HP OMEN 15/17T lineup indeed has no Nvidia Optimus, better gaming performance.
Go to the Nvidia control panel and see if you have a G-Sync tab, if not then the display panel is not G-Sync certified. Then, also within the Nvidia Control Panel go to the V-Sync tab, see if you can enable FastSync, if you can then the display panel is directly connected to the dedicated Nvidia GPU and not through the intel iGPU, confirming that there is no Nvidia Optimus

Lastly be grateful you got dual channel RAM, 2x8 GB as it boost performance up to 20%. A single stick of 16 GB would perform far worse, then there's the nightmare of finding an identical ram stick online to buy for proper dual channel configuration.

Nvidia Control Panel says the display is G-SYNC capable.

I want 32 or even 64 GB RAM, so will need to kick out both 8GB modules.
I believe "the need" for identical modules "for proper dual channel configuration" is a myth.
My 8 years old W520 is running 4x 8GB, total 32GB RAM, sad this OMEN has only 2 slots.

I understand about the memory now, well in the USA store I see the option for 2 x 16 GB Sticks of DDR4 for a total of 32 GB DDR4 RAM. But remember this is a gaming laptop and anything above 16 GB is overkill and not used by videogames, 32 GB is the max they will offer, I think only large Desktop Replacements like MSI GT 76 Titan, Alienware Area 51M or Asus RoG G703 Chimera offer 4 slots of RAM.

Thank for the info on the G-Sync capabilities, so it says capable and you actually set it up! Seems great weird they don't advertise this premium feature at all in their website. Do you notice screen tearing in-game while playing with it enabled? Also just to confirm no Nvidia Optimus, can use enable FastSync?

One last favour, can you use HardwareInfo or some similar tool to find the display's brand, model and number? Just want confirmation on it being the superb ChiMei CMN175D IPS screen!

Thanks in advance for all the info you're providing, the HPstore and Omen Website don't offer any in-depth details. Their feature page about the new Omen 15/17T still says "coming soon" but they are already being sold since June, weird.

For Vertical sync there are options: Off, On, Fast.

The LCD panel is AUO82ED ... is this good or bad

    Hi there,
Do you actually have the 17T with this Panel? I have been trying to find out how to order this panel from Alibaba/express or other sites from China. If you do have it, does HWiNFO mentions a different name besides CMN175D?
    Thanks

Thanks again deniale, it's an excellent panel, AUOptronics were the first to offer a good 144hz IPS display panel since late 2017, G-Sync certified since day one!
    http://m.panelook.com/B156HAN08.2_AUO_15.6_LCM_overview_35018.html

Before I found out about the ChiMei CMN175D panel it was the best laptop gaming display panel out there! For example It's been used on all premium Asus RoG gaming laptops of 2018 and 2019, most of 2018's MSI gaming laptops use it too as it has good 9ms average response times. MSI's 2019 lineup majoritarily uses ChiMei panels now and not a single one is G-Sync capable, so that's the weakness of ChiMei so far.
So, this explains why your laptop has G-Sync, only a couple of ChiMei panels are G-Sync certified and those are old now, like the 120hz one on the MSI GT75 Titan with GTX 1080.

The ChiMei CMN175D has better contrast ratio averages (1500 vs 800), so deeper blacks and slightly better color coverage averages (90 to 95 vs 95 to 99%) compared to the AUO82ED, but same 9ms response time and I'd say G-Sync gives the AUO82ED the upper hand for gaming until (if) CMN175D get G-Sync certified. It's mainly the contrast ratio that got me hooked, 1500 is a noticeable upgrade from 800ish but i'd rather have G-Sync.

Hi, no, I don't have it I found out about the CMN175D trough this LaptopMedia review of the new mid 2019 Omen 17.

deniale bought the 15.6 inch G-Sync version of this laptop series and just confirmed it has an AUO82ED display and not the Chi Mei CMN175D, seemingly only the Non G-sync mid 2019 17.3 inch model has it. Need to wait until someone who has bought it posts here.

The USA HP store is terribad BTW, I check it daily for a 17.3 inch version with G-Sync and for a few minutes I found models comparable to deniale's 15.6 inch G-sync dh0003nc, in USA those were listed as the dh0001nc and dh0002nc (storage configurations was the only difference), under tech specs, special features, was listed as G-Sync capable, but then it was gone from the store. Only way to differentiate from the base mid 2019 Omen 15t was the keyboard RGB in the picture (red for base Omen 15t, 4 zone multicolor for the G-Sync dh0001/2/3nc)
Lastly the new 17.3 inch model used the list a full power 115 watt TDP RTX 2070 last weekend and now lists a RTX 2070 Max-Q, while being about an inch thicker than the 15.6 model! Nonsense.

Anyone able to tell me if the HP Omen - 15-dc0051nr has SATA III speed support for a SATA III 2.5" SSD? I'm looking to swap out my internal 2.5" 7200rpm HD for a 2.5" 2TB WD SSD and I'm unable to find if this motherboard for the Omen can support SATA III speeds. Below I've linked the hard drive I'm looking at buying - Any help is greatly appreciated - thanks!!

I have gotten a spec for the 17t with i9-9880h 8 ram 2080 maxq 256 gb for $2000. I do a lot of database manipulations, rely on cpu threads to evaluate the data and do same gaming on the side. I wish i can downgrade gpu to 1660 ti with the cpu. Nah my wife will kill me!

$1000 for price-performance ratio. I bumped it down to i7-9750h 1660 ti for $960 which is more reasonable.

It appears that SATA III is supported, as said in the official manual as well as one review from Notebookcheck.

    i installed 2- 2tb nvme drives.

put raid in bios (only one setting)

    then installed windows

then used the intel raid software to create raid 0. then reinstalled windows 10 on the raid. my speeds are exact the same 3200 (was the same with one drive)

also having a issue when i restart it just goes blank. doesnr actually start. i have to hold down power and hard off the turn on.

this is for restart every time.

what am i doing wrong? what setting do i need to change.

on raid it created a 4tb just fine but speeds did not increase at all

Pretty much convinced to grab one of the HP Omen 17's w/ 2080.

In fact, the only obvious downside to me is that sharp front edge.

The i9 + RTX 2080 combo with 1TB HDD, 512GB SSD, 32GB RAM and 144Hz screen is on sale for $2,380 right now. According to HP, you also get the Omen Mindframe headset for free. If that's not a bargain, I don't know what is. The code BTSSTACK10 is needed to get this price.

I still have my heart set on the Alienware m17 R2 but I'm holding off until I see reviews and until they release the Lunar Light version.

Hello, I purchased an Omen 15-dc0096nr. I read about issues with the Omens being underpowered with OEM power adapters. The previous owner didn't have the power adapter so I ordered the Omen 330w Power Adapter. The power adapters are rated at the same 19.5v voltage but the 330w obviously has more amps available.. The Omen power adapter also has the 7.4mm plug while the laptop has the 4.5mm plug. Has anyone tried ordering the 7.4mm to 4.5mm adapter plug and used the higher wattage power adapter? Am I going to run into problems with the higher wattage power adapter on this laptop? Thank for any help and input!

Have you monitored your thermals at all? It could be that they are throttling down.

I just got an Omen 15 9th gen i7 and 2070 and the wifi keeps cutting out on the 5g connection. It connects to 2.4g and can usually hold that but the speeds are way slower. Any idea on what to do? It has the intel 9560 wifi card.

It started cutting out on both connections, anyone think it could be a hardware issue?

    Model: OMEN by HP 15-dc1047nr

    Thanks!

    My story with a new 15-dh0003nc, i7-9750H, RTX 2070:

A month ago i updated BIOS.
After update and reboot i entered my power on password.
    Message from computer: Incorrect password.
I tried many times, also with shift, caps, numpad, but did not succeed.

I wrote a post about that on official HP support forum and they locked my thread, because i was trying to "bypass security" which is against the forum rules.
When i reported the forum admin who did this, I was contacted via PM, that a HP person will contact me and help me.
Really, i was contacted via another PM by a user with name and signature "I'm HP employee" [no real name or anything] who asked a ton of information from me, incl. my full name, address, phone number, etc. and he told me, local HP support will contact me and solve the issue.

Yes, nobody contacted me till now.

I brought the laptop next day to local HP authorized service center and after several weeks they called me, that the part to replace (motherboard) is not available and won't be available soon and they are working on it.
We have max 30 days period here for warranty repairs. I live in EU.

    NB:
I did not forget the password
My ProBook G3 had no issue with updating the BIOS while it was password protected.
And my ThinkPad W520 had absolutely no issue with that too (also with power on password set).
I found one other user on HP forum with similar Omen and same issue - they locked his thread as well without any meaningful update.

    TLDR:
Do not set power-on password on your Omen.
