Sheesh that sounds horrible haha. The 144hz is literally one of the smoothest I've experienced to date. I agree sound quality is lacking much of the lows but honestly, I'd much rather have a solid dac and/or use my g933 than rely on laptop grade audio components. I'll try to find a part number but I wasn't able to see anything last time i dug in the device manager other than the model number.

    Get the ebay one imo

It's much easier to get a refund from ebay's customer service in case you do get a non matching "compatible " panel

You think so? The one on Aliexpress has more detailed pictures...

    I'm so tempted man!

Comparing the 120Hz one to the 144Hz unit they look pretty much the same and looks like it's a straight fit with stock cables and everything.

I never changed a panel on a laptop, is it too fiddly?

With most sensibly designed laptop, it's just a matter of pulling the bezel then replacing the display (if your cable is compatible).

I'd ask if the seller can send the exact model you're looking for before ordering.

From the service manual it doesn’t look too hard.
Is the G-Sync module in the panel or the motherboard?

There is no g-sync module iirc, at least not a separate pcb module

I was under the impression the Gsync module/feature is on the MB? could be totally off base.

How does it work in laptops then? The Omen X is offered in 120Hz and 144Hz flavours, both have G-Sync. However, searching for the panels online I found that not one is listed with G-Sync as a feature.

License is built into the panel and motherboard, not entirely sure how the hardware is but prema says there's a buffer for g-sync above 75hz.

@Prema sorry to ping you, but I don't really know how g-sync works on mobile.

G-Sync is not a feature of any panel. It is a chip on the motherboard on laptops (in the monitor housing for external monitors). G-Sync "compatible" panels are just panels that have been approved or white-listed by the manufacturer and Nvidia to support the feature. If the panel is not recognized by the Gsync software and or chip, it should not work.

    Cool. TIL

So, many of these panels that are found for sale in chinese sites only advertise the panel #.
In this case they say it's a B173HAN03.0 but don't specify as to where it comes from (stock units are AUO). Should I expect to receive a AUO unit or some low quality copy with worse colors?

I asked both sellers this but they haven't answered yet.

iirc that "chip" is just one or two resistors on the gpu pcb as the case with 9xx cards

I believe it is L12056-001. The factory assembly line at Compal always get priority for new parts, but eventually partsurfer.hp.com should get some as well to feed depot and onsite repairs.
