    pilotsnoopy,

Does the six cell battery stick out the bottom of the notebook when installed or is it flush with the rest of the housing?

I've had this laptop for about a week now. Installed Portal and it runs fine I agree with pilotsnoopy that the fan noise is very minimal.

One part of the design i don't like is how the screen hinges look so flimsy.

The backlit keyboard is a sweet feature and I like how you can turn it on and off at whim. However I didn't see any adjustment for brightness settings.

Pilot, did you get rid of any of the bloatware and if so what?

I have not installed any utilities or software to get temperature reads.

I been using the fingerprint thingy and am pleasantly surprised at the ease of use. The software has certainly been improved alot since I first experienced it on my dad's HP tablet.

Do you find that the backlit keyboard is too bright, or rather too dim?

    tkhu8888,

i have not uninstalled any bloatware, compared to my dad's HP tablet...i feel the bloatware on the dv3510nr is very minimal.

i am considering uninstalling Norton Internet Security, this would be the biggest 'bloatware' for me...would prefer minimal AV only software.

the Cyberlink software for the webcam is actually quite ok.

I am quite annoyed with Vista though coming from XP Professional, am only keeping it as I would like to have ram upgraded to 8GB in future.

I agree the bloatware was quiet minimal on the laptop which was a pleasant surprise.

I don't like Norton too much but having a year free AV can't hurt so I'm going to keep it until it runs out.

Thanks for posting the screen shot. I can't make out the details in the image, but it looks like the Windows driver supports WOL. Very cool. I was thinking that the BIOS also has to be set to allow WOL in order for it to work, but I'm not sure about that.

I guess I'll find out soon enough -- I pulled the trigger and bought the dv3510nr! I also got the HP C6380 printer along with it, so I'm in hardware heaven.

I live in Lisbon, Portugal and called HP to know when the dv3500 will reach this side of the pond.

Apparently very, very soon... Can't wait :)

I'm much more concern on the heat issue, before i was planned to buy DV4t but unfortunately the heating issue quite serious and this is one of my concern.
I saw this lappy the vent is at the side and i guess this will reduce heat much better ... i wish some1 could post the temperature of this laptop. I will go for this model if it solved the heat issue :)

am not concerned about heat as i have been running games on high resolution and it has been ok so far, there is a noticeable increase but its manageable.

only gripe i have about this laptop is the 8 pipeline 9300M GS...no idea if having 512mb of ram helps...but well its ok so far

    hey guys,

I been in Starbucks for 1hr 30mins...and my battery is down to 35% from full charge.

i been downloading since I came in, played songs half the time, brightness set to a little more than half...backlit keyboard not on...a razer black adder mouse plugged in...

maybe a little heavy usage on my part? or is 6 cells and 4hr 15min very far fetched?

pilotsnoopy - does this laptop have different power profiles for you to choose from? how long does the battery last if you choose the battery saver mode? i wouldn't be suprised terribly if the 4:15 they quote is with minimal screen brightness either.

i picked one up tonight and i'm debating on opening it because of that best buy 15% restocking fee. i'm hoping to get around 3 hours out of "normal" useage. i suppose worst case scenario is if it doesn't meet the battery life claim to exchange for a new one and then raise hell to the manager if i end up not liking it :)

I picked mine up yesterday and I'm pretty **** impressed. I'm coming off returning THREE of the new Macbook Pros because each of them had a defect and they all locked up in Vista...so this is supposedly a downgrade, but I'm totally happy with this machine. AND I saved $1400.

I'm really impressed with the snappiness for day to day stuff, exactly what I'm looking for. The build quality seems really awesome as well.

    Two issues:

    1) The screen isn't the best. Viewing angles are terrible and it really ought to be 1440x900. Again, I'm coming off the new MBP...which might be among the best notebook screens available. Totally usuable, don't get me wrong, but yeah....it doesn't "wow."

    2) And maybe someone can help me on this, the 2 year warranty was a selling point for me as I can use this notebook for a couple years...worry free and then maybe pick up another. But when I used HP's online warranty checker, it clearly says one year warranty. Should I be concerned? Or can I call on best buy to rectify if an issue comes up in the second year, any thoughts?

But yeah, this notebook has been great so far. I'm getting around 3 hours of battery life during normal use and I'm sure I could up it if I turned off bluetooth and lowered the brightness, among other measures. Oh, the removable optical drive is AWESOME...will they offer other inputs for that bay? Battery, hdd, etc?

Sorry for the disjointed post but yeah, just wanted to give some impressions for those on the fence. I'm very, very impressed with Blue Label. I really do feel like they took a lot of concerns into account and made exactly what I'm looking for, and I'm an extremely proficient user that expects a lot from a machine. Oh, and it runs very cool....which is awesome. I'm not gaming on it though....don't see the point on a 13 inch screen.

there is no HP software to give more power profiles...except for the default 3 windows power profile.
have not been on battery saver mode...

i believe you will have no regrets opening the box...

besides i think its a matter of time befroe the 9 and 12cells are avail for this laptop if the battery isnt good enough for you.

the papers say it is a 2year warranty but the label on the bottom is a 1 year warranty...i believe the 2 year stands...just not sure if we gonna have to bring it back to Best Buy or HP.

I have an email into Best Buy to figure out what this is all about, I don't want to get screwed down the road and I at least want an email where they confirm the warranty.

    I'll post the response here.

The dv3500t is no longer listed on HP's website? I wonder if it's gone for good, or getting updated to the 9400m chipset perhaps? Odd considering it's only been out for a month or so.

I also bought an HP DV3510NR on Sunday from Best Buy. I only now opened and noticed on the box after setting up that it is a 3500 instead. Can you check your box's model # to see if yours is a 3500 also instead of what your receipt says? Thanks.

I bought an HP 3510NR but the box says 3500. Are you able to advise? There is a difference in the two models according to online. My receipt says 3510. Should I return it?

Umm...why don't you just check the specs of the hardware? Also, there should be a full model # on the bottom of the laptop. Boxes are often generic packaging.

Don't worry, that is correct. The dv3500 is the base HP model, and the dv3510nr is Best Buy's particular configuration of the dv3500.

I also have the dv3510nr from Best Buy. The product label on the bottom of the laptop says "HP Pavillion dv3500".

When you open the screen, the upper-right corner says "Pavillion dv3000". That last bit scared me at first as well, but all the hardware checks out as it is supposed to be.

Also, my packaging box shows "dv3500" on one side, and "dv3510nr" on the opposite side.

I haven't played with it a whole lot yet, but it seems nice so far. I do wish there was a way to turn off the glowing HP logo on the outside of the lid. I left the machine turned on last night but closed the screen and that white logo was like a flashlight.

I'll second the idea of an "official" thread. What do we have to do to get one started?

I've been experimenting with the Ubuntu 8.10 Release Candidate and it has been working fine. At least in the Live CD -- I haven't tried to install it yet. The final version of 8.10 is being released tomorrow so I'm planning to install that.

The resolution comes up correctly at 1280x800, wireless network works, wired network works, sound works, touchpad works, CD drive works, USB works, backlit keyboard works, media card reader works.

I did notice a couple issues: I couldn't get the screen brightness to change using Fn+F7/F8. The volume adjustment buttons mostly worked but they seemed a little weird. I haven't played with them in Vista yet, so I don't know if they're just a little weird in general. Also, I'm not sure whether the fingerprint scanner is supported yet.

Honestly, I was expecting more problems. I was impressed with how well it worked.

I would think that this excellent new laptop would have a lot of 'official' reviews by now [CNET, etc...]. Any links?

And it's strange not finding anything in the HP site even tough is being sold exclusively in Best Buy.

    thanks in advance,

    From Best Buy:

I can understand your concerns relating to the warranty offered on your HP notebook and am happy to address your concerns.

Most of the notebooks that we sell come with a 1 year manufacturers warranty. If your notebook is supposed to have a two year warranty, you will need to speak with HP as Best Buy does not have any control over manufacturer warranties and their coverages.

You may reach HP at 800-752-0900.

If you have problems with your notebook, you can bring it to your local Best Buy and have it serviced under the manufacturer's warranty.

    Sincerely,

    Thomas C.

If you had mentioned it is the dv3510nr in your email which is in their BLUE LABEL line of products...I suggest you suggest to him firmly he ought to know better about their 2 year warranty which even I know just from reading their own website. I been quite pissed with Best Buy staff's lack of knowledge of their own policies.

    HP dv3500t quietly disappears

HP's dv3500t has already but inexplicably disappeared from the company's online store. The 13.3-inch notebook surfaces in a search of the company's site but results in a dead product link, leaving only the 12-inch tx2500z tablet and the 14-inch dv4 series as HP's smallest mainstream notebooks. The company had only revealed the system on October 1st.

HP hasn't warned of any cancellations for the dv3500 lineup. An HP official has been contacted for commentary on the sudden shift but hasn't responded as of press time.

The notebook is partly compensated by options for the dv4t, which now has the option for the same bronze color as the smaller portable. However, it loses the GeForce 9300M GS video, backlit keyboard and more minor changes to the system and would represent an unusual move for HP, which rarely pulls systems after less than a month of sales.

HP's withdrawl comes shortly after the introduction of the 9400M, which performs slightly faster than the 9300M GS and consolidates the usual northbridge, southbridge and video chipsets into a single part.

Yeah, I clearly mentioned it in the original email and sent a somewhat terse reply. Let's see what happens. If we ARE allowed to just take it to the store, I think the included piece of paper is sufficient evidence. As is Best Buy's press release about the notebook which mentions the warranty.

I bought a Case Logic 13" neoprene case SNS13 from Newegg. Fits perfect and goes in any backpack. Sorry, can't post links yet...

Also got the Logitech VX Nano mouse. The USB receiver is small enough to leave plugged in and put it in the case.

Thank you for replying. I checked that out and it is as you say. I love it but since using it, I can't call it a "laptop" in the sense that it can't sit in my lap. It is super hot. Just sitting on a desk with a fan on it doesn't help. Are you experiencing this? I have a 17" toshiba more than 4 years old and it doesn't get this hot sitting on a desk.

Will I regret it if I try to remove the stickers that are plastered around the fingerprint reader (Intel, Vista, nvidia, ...)? Will it leave behind a nasty residue or anything?

    you won't regret it now...

you will regret it if you remove it only few years down...then there will be a mark..a 'light' spot.

i found out e last time when i remove e stickers after 3 years as they were peeling.

I emailed tech at HP about the HP3500 series being withdrawn after only a few weeks. I bought the HP3510nr at Best Buy. I told him I was concerned about the lack of support for firmware and drivers that would come along with a BestBuy only product. I have in writing on the Email that the warranty is 1 year and that they took it off to make room for other products. I know this person may be on Mars doing support, but it makes me uneasy that they could pull a product so fast. I would not have bought it knowing this. I have the Ad from Best Buy on the Blue Series so I know I can legally pursue this, but at Best Buy they said the warranty is 2 years through HP who now denies it. If it has to go for service the wait will be enourmous. Any suggestions? A class action in the making?
