I think the ones you're talking about are the desktop memory sticks. The ones for the notebooks are $129. Unless you have a different CC website than I do.

You are correct. You should never do anything requiring brainpower when you are sick as a dog with a fever, sorry about that!

Instead of making a new topic for a simple question, I thought I'd just post it here...

I have a zv5410 with an AMD athlon 64 + 3.0 processor. I have my power set at "portable/laptop", which has the computer running at 800mhz when I'm not running many applications. If I use the "home/office" power setting which keeps the speed at 1.8ghz, am I going to shorten the life span of the laptop by much, based on the increased temperature that goes along with the increased processor speed. At 1.8ghz, the temperature seems to hover around 48-50 degrees celcius. I know that the speed increases in "portable/laptop" mode when it's needed, but I still notice a lag at this setting, so I like running it at the full 1.8ghz all the time.
So just to summarize!....will consistently higher processor speeds / temperatures = lower laptop life and more problems??
    Thanks.

Not significantly. Your temps are pretty good. You should think about undervolting, you can probably run full speed at 1.3V core instead of 1.5V, that'll dramatically cut power consumption and heat output. You'll need ClockGen for nForce3 motherboards for that.

Anyone have any info/rumors on whether AMD will ever come out with a cpu beyond the AMA3700BEX5AR that might work in a zv5000 notebook?

Right now I am at my desktop computer waiting while the notebook spends slightly over 3 hours encoding a 56 minute video movie into MPEG for burning to a DVD.

The cost to upgrade from my 3200+ to the 3700+ has come down to $350 at Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-490&depa=0

When and only when I do these encodes it really throws out a lot of hot air.

Well my fever finally broke and guess what, Circuit City this week does have advertised 512MMB PC2700 SODIMM memory from Kingston for $70 after $25 rebate.

Ok Bill I guess we let it slide this time[:D]

Well I did the plunge and bought the zv5410 at CC. Was the last one they had in stock for $950 after rebates. Currently loading this thing up with my work files. Nice notebook. It even comes with your personal self defence weapon comonly known as the brick.[;)] Man what a clunker.

I was also checking with Ultradrives to see if the Toshiba dual layer drive would work with my new toy. They replyed that they need to know exactly what model it is so they can determine if the drive needs to be master or slave.

Did you have to do anything with the Pioneer drive that you added (special order requirements)?

    Thanks

I have just today found out that the Pioneer drive will not sense DL media for my burning software!! I have the very latest Nero 6.6.0.8, Adobe Encore 1.5 and also have DVD Decrypter (it works fine for burning regular DVD images). The US Pioneer office told me that it should work with my Verbatim DL media, but that it is an OEM only device and no they have no intention of upgrading the firmware ever! It is very interesting that DVDInfo Pro does support the DVR-K14 with DL media. I can put the Plextor burned DL media in the Pioneer drive and run tests on the media, but so far, I have not found any burner software that will show up on the drive as DL. I think that I lost on this upgrade gamble!

    Anyone got any suggestions??

P.S. I will be calling HP tomorrow and getting an RMA number to have my power jack repaired, it is really giving me problems. My one year warranty will be up very soon.

Sorry to hear that Bill. Don't really have an idea on what you could do. Glad you found out because I was just about to order one. I know that doesn't do you any good.

Based on your finding, I'm currently looking into the Toshiba one that Ultradrives is selling. It's supposedly DL. Not that it is very economical yet to burn too many DL dvd's but since I'm going to get a DVD-+R drive I figure I get the newest one out there.

Is there any other media that you can try?

Directron has offered to send me a different unit, but they do not offer any other notebook burners.

    Have you seen this: http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=21550

I want one maybe this is what HP is waiting for: "dual core Turion 64 notebook processor"

Have you considered their offer? At least that way you'd be sure that you didn't get a somewhat handycapped drive.

No I haven't heard about the Turion. This is my first AMD notebook while my last three desktop systems were all AMD.

I really would like to add the burner and if possible one with DL support. I can stand the 512 MB ram and the 60 GB HD for now.

The current word is that the 3700+ will be the highest clocking Athlon 64 CPU available to socket 754.

(http://www.wincustomize.com/store/?DesktopX_ad1) If anyone here is using it, does it slow down your or freeze your computer once in a while? I am asking because i use to use it on my desktop and it use to freeze once in a while, but it was a old 466Mhz celeron.
Also which system cleaner, is recomended? Are better what software is recomended for this laptop. Please understand that you are talking to a rookie on computer and I dont have any idea of what software I should have to keep this laptop runing as fast as it was from the box.[?][?] Sorry for the rookie post.

Well my replacement laptop for my wrecked (auto) Althon xp-m 2800+ Compaq is an HP with an Athlon xp-m 2800+. I did this because I could reuse the 512MB memory chip outta the wrecked Compaq, and also because it was on sale for $700 ($250 mail in rebates from Circuit City).
This HP Pavilion zv5404us is a pretty nice machine, with some better features over the 9 month old similar Compaq (2103us) I had. For about the same price, it has built in wireless, a wireless on/off button (nice!), looks better, and just has a somewhat better overall feel and quality.

The neatest thing is the "PowerNow" technology on the AMD cpu. Some cool stuff: You can monitor and see it *instantaneously* adjust the processor speed (and thus power use and heat generation, etc) as needed. Now THAT is COOL!!

    Literally.

    Distinctly cooler running.

So the performance is decent, specially for only $700.

    Pi 2M: 2m 12sec

since this machine is to surf and do occasional chess, having 10-12% less performance, but paying only 1/2 the $$$ is a good buy for me.

Pros: Great price/performance ratio, wireless on/off button, well designed, cool running, good performance just like my desktop XP 2800+

Conns: Just like the Compaq 2103, it was an only fair quality LCD screen (of course at under $1000)

Summary: I'm pretty pleased. It fits the ticket perfectly for me.

    JNMIGR:

From past discussions, that seems to be a glitch with Windows. I have an AMD 64 3000+, and it shows the same thing. If you download Mobilemeter (I don't remember the link to this program..sorry), you'll see that your computer isn't actually running at 800mhz if it's going full speed. It's stupid that Windows can't properly read the processor speed, but it's only a cosmetic thing...your processor should be running fine.

You know I downloaded Mobilemeter but after I closes the Mobilemeter window I lost it and can't find the program. But even with this program it showed 800 Mhz. Also when will the laptop run on full power?

jnmigr: Double-click the MobileMeter icon in your system tray (lower right corner of the screen) to redisplay the MobileMeter screen.

Srg_wood: It sounds like you have one of the evil P4-based zv5000's with shared memory graphics, not the good AMD-based zv5000's that we're discussing here. The P4-based machines will reserve 128MB of RAM for graphics by default, so if you have a 768MB machine Windows will report 640MB available.

I have to give HP credit for fantastic repair service. I started have intermittant power connector problems maybe about a month ago. As it gradually got worse and as my one year warranty was about to expire next month, I called HP on this past Wednesday afternoon and explained the problem. Within minutes they had briefed me on packing up the unit and had scheduled a FedEx pickup. At 3:26 pm on Thursday FedEx picked up the unit here in Virginia. On Friday at 4:02 pm I got an email from HP that they had received the unit in Milpitas California. Another email on Saturday morning at 4:02 am, the unit had been repaired and was being shipped back by FedEx. Because of the weekend I now will receive the unit back this afternoon (Monday) about 3 pm.

    Great Service HP. Thanks!

As for the speed setting of the CPU I have a question. Maybe I didn't understand the previous post on here about it.

I checked for upgrades for my zv5410 on HP's site. It had a processor update for the AMD chip claiming that XP would automatically adjust everything based on the requirements.See here

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?dlc=en&lc=en&os=228&product=443081&lang=en&cc=us&softwareitem=ob-29171-1

I installed it and then realized that it wouldn't go any faster than 800 Mhz using Mobmeter. I played around and no matter what setting only 800 Mhz.

I ended up doing a system restore and no it goes at full 1.8Ghz again.

Did I miss something or do you need anythign else if you upgrade to that newer driver?

Glad you mentioned this Bill. When I first got mine, I thought I've seen 1.6 Ghz on mine but the next day it was 1.8. Figured I was starting to loose it.

Just tried it and you are correct. With battery 1.6 and on AC 1.8.

Does anyone have the DVD Dual-Layer recordable drive from HP or an third party upgrade in their zv5000z and has verified that it can record Dual-Layer discs?

What is the make/model of the drive?

I have just returned and gotten credit for the Pioneer DVR-K14 drive that I got from Directron. I am aware of the Toshiba/Samsung SD-R6472 from UltraDrives, but I would like to know that it will really work. The Pioneer would write CD's and single layer DVD's. It would read all including Dual-Layer DVD's, but it would not recognize a blank DVD DL disc. Pioneer has no plans for any upgraded frimware.

Just ordered a NEC ND-6500A from Newegg. Read a lot of things about it on other forums. One guy was testing about every known media with it even DL. Supposedly works great.

Scheduled to arrive tomorrow here at the hotel (currently on the road). Even bought a set of small screw drivers for the "surgery".

Was also looking into the SD-R6472. They have two models, one configured as a slave and one as a master. I contacted HP but the couldn't or wouldn't tell me how the drive has to be configured.

Sent a second e-mail to Ultradrives to ask which one I would need. Never recieved and answer from them.

Since I heard so many good things about the NEC and that is supposedly was setup as a master, I decided to order it. If needs be I return it.

For some reason I ended up in Nero drive info tool and it says that the drive is a master. So I should be ok.

Will let you know about the outcome.

I just got my R3000Z a couple of weeks ago. I ordered it with the Dual Layer DVD R/W. I just checked under the device manager, and it is the NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A. I haven't tried any dual layer discs in it yet. I'm still waiting for the price to drop before I purchase any. However, I doubt that HP would use drives that didn't support DL discs.

Cool so I should be ok with the one I bought. Anybody know of a good place (local store) to get DL media for a good price.

Checked Best Buy and they want $25 for 3 of them. Haven;t really looked to much into it or is 8 and some bucks a good price for one?

Newegg only lists 2 entries, and only this one has been reviewed:

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-132-376&depa=0

Reviewer says it works in Pioneer desktop drives. $30 for 5, so $6 each, plus shipping. Might as well buy local.

hi. i`m a student from Poland, i will be working in the us for few months and i`m really interestedf in buying a notebook there.
I have in my desktop Athlon processor and i would like to have my notebook equipped with amd too. My qestion is a little off-topic but i haven`t found no thread about amd notebooks and i know that zv5000 have an amd inside.

Could someone explain me or post some links or articles about comparison between amd and intel processors (but only the new ones and mobile). I`m interested in technical specs about those processors, especially about mobile versions like 3700+ DTR. I found some reviewes and articles but i would to know more. i`ve read in this thread that celeron is bad, i think brainstretch post it, i would like to know why.
I hope my post is clear, my english isn`t so perfect.

    Thank you

    In short:

Pentium 4: desktop chips crammed into notebooks that run too hot for the task. Weak to nonexistant power management.
Celeron: P4's crippled with small L2 caches and slower FSB speeds.
Pentium M: The only decent CPU Intel makes. Moderate performance and very good battery life.
Celeron M: P-M's with less L2 cache. Not as evil as P4-based Celerons.
Athlon 64 DTR: desktop chips packaged for notebooks. Power management runs the notebook at 800MHz, 0.95V when the CPU is idle, which is *very* power efficient, but under sustained load the CPU will get very hot (full speed, 1.5V core), though not as bad as a P4.
Athlon 64 Mobile: runs top speed at 1.4V core, cutting max power consumption from 81W to 62W.
Athlon 64 Low-Voltage: only used in Acer Ferarri 3200 and 3400's AFAIK. Runs top speed at 1.2V core, 35W max power consumption.
Turion 64: two versions, the ML series that's 35W max and the MT series that's 25W max. Just announced. They'll hit Europe before America but they'll be here soon enough, probably next month. These are the ideal notebook chips, Pentium M like battery life with AMD64 performance. There will still be higher-wattage Athlon 64 notebook chips if you want to sacrifice some battery life for top performance. I suspect the upcoming zv6000z's will use the Athlon 64's and not Turions, but HP hasn't said anything yet.

If you want to run 64-bit WinXP/Linux/Solaris (and 64-bit WinXP ships next month), the Athlon 64/Turions are your only choice.

I have a question. The zv5000z notebook that I just had repaired was a Product Number DP523AV Serial Number CND4110HL5. The repaired notebook (new? motherboard) has the same serial number but is Product Number DP299AV. The new BIOS is F.34

What is the difference between the DP523AV and the DP299AV?

    Bill :::: zv5000z :: 3200+ :: 1GB :: 100GB 5400rpm :: 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) :: XP Pro

I received the NEC ND-6500A drive today from Newegg. I installed it this evening. Very simple exchange and XP recognized the drive without any problems.

The bezel of the new drive is about 1/2" recessed which doesn't bother me at all. As mentioned by others it actually gives you a spot to better hold the laptop when carrying it around.

Burned a movie on 8x Maxell DVD-R media. It said 8x when it burned but it took over 14 min. to finish. Had a lot of other stuff going in the background. Will try to burn some more during the day at work.

The only problem I have is that I don't have a DVD player at the hotel to test them out. I guess I have to find a store where I can try them.

Was in Walmart but wasn't about to pay $30 plus tax for 3 Dual Layer disks. Will try tomorrow to get some at Best Buy for a little less if I make it off work in time.

You are right. I looked at them closely and it's very simple to remove the bezels. I used the two smallest flat head screw drivers I had in the set I bought and took it off.

The HP one seems to fit perfect on the NEC drive. It took me less than 5 minutes to change them once I had if figured out. Just have to be gentle.

The bezel removed form the NEC fit the LG drive ok but not as good.

Burned a total of 3 DVD's (8x) and all of them seem to take about the time of 4x burning??? It also seems to tie up the PC pretty much slowing everything else down.

Didn't manage to get the DL media. Probably won't be until next week because they have me working late over the weekend.

If I get some time I will try to post some pictures of the whole drive and bezel swap.

The Mobile and DTR class CPUs both run at the same speed, just at different core voltages. Mobiles stop at 3400+ though while the DTRs go up to 3700+.

I just ordered a zv5000z CTO (delivery date 3/31 or sooner) with the following configuration:

    Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition with SP2
    - AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3400+ 2.20 GHz
    - FREE Upgrade to 15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen!!
    - 64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go + 1394
    - 512MB DDR SDRAM (2x256MB)
    - 80 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
    - DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    - 54g(TM) 802.11b/g WLAN w/ 125HSM/SpeedBooster(TM)
    - 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    - Microsoft(R) Works/Money

OK, so I should have opted for the (1x512 MB) and the 12 cell battery, but I was being economical :). I've been checking out the price of 1 GB memory and even though I've read a lot of your posts, I'm still confused. The Crucial website recommends a PC3200 board---don't I need a 2700? And the HP website doesn't even offer a 1 GB for the notebooks and says that its 512 MB won't work with an Athlon 64. Any recommendations?

If you buy what Crucial recommends they'll guarantee that it works, so you can send them back if they don't. Crucial uses Micron chips, which are the most AMD-friendly chips you can buy, so they'll probably work. PC2700 is significantly cheaper though and its slightly lower latency partially compensates for its lower bandwidth, so I'd lean towards that. I use 2x512MB Crucial PC2700.

Thanks, Brian. Any idea if the prices of the relevant memory are getting cheaper or more expensive?

Nope. If I had to guess I'd say they'll stay roughly flat. Go ahead and buy.

Here are some pictures of the drive exchange on my zv5410. It includes some shots from the bezel exchange as well.

    It's in Adobe format.

It's been a long day and if I forgot something let me know and I will add or correct it.
